So amazing to make stuff with your own hands (with help from someone who really knows what they're doing). Although you wouldn't know from the outside, the space is amazing-colorful, bright, inviting and lends itself to the creative mind. There are multiple large rooms that can each accommodate maybe 15? people (due to the equipment) with sinks for cleaning everything off at the end. The instructor started off a little dry but ended up really engaging everyone and the entire group seemed to have a great time. We had a one hour session and, after getting setup with an apron and a clay working station, we got to choose what basic item we wanted to make, got guidance throughout the process, decorated our creations and decided on the color for the pros to add on after the fact. Items are fired/cured and picked up in several weeks. It was a great, chill way to spend a weekend morning and I'm looking forward to bringing my treasure home in a few weeks. read more

I treated my friend here for her birthday, and we both had such an amazing time! We took the beginner class and absolutely loved it. The instructor was super nice and helpful--he guided us step by step through the whole process. After shaping our clay, he torched it and let us decorate with a variety of cute stamps (so many to choose from!). He even helped us take photos after the class, which was a nice touch. We each ended up making a flower vase and a bowl. Just a heads-up: you'll need to wait about 30 days to pick up your finished pieces since they need time to be fired, glazed, and properly dried. Overall, it was a fantastic experience--fun, relaxing, and very beginner-friendly. Highly recommend it if you're looking for a unique activity in Philly! Our teacher was very hands on with us and made us not feel like we were a room full of strangers The amount of clay given to us was very generous and it made me wish I was a bit more creative than making a giant mug. Had lots of fun at the Clay Date Class at Yay Clay! One of the first things I noticed was how cute the space is. There is a retro pink theme going on which made for great photos. There is a wall (not pictures) with a number of free retro games, including a free claw machine with prizes! Unfortunately, the claw machine wasn't perfectly functional but I still had lots of fun attempting for the prizes while waiting for my class to start. As for the class itself, we had three instructors lead the session and they provided a lot of guidance. This was super helpful considering that I had limited experience in working with clay and it allowed me to make a beautiful piece by the end of the workshop. You have the freedom to really customize the piece you want to make and the instructors were able to help me make a matcha bowl with a spout! After the piece was thrown, we were also able to decorate it with stamps and pick our glaze color. A booking in the Retro Room is a bit on the pricey end ($90 per person for 2 hours) but they offer a cheaper session priced at $75 per person for 2 hours in their Green Room. I still think the price is a bit steep but you are paying for the fun vibes. However, with that price in mind I was surprised that their bathrooms are not in the best state and only 1 out of 3 restrooms were functional. Additionally, the piece you make won't be available for pickup until 4 weeks after, which is a significant amount of wait time. read more

What a fun experience! My boyfriend surprised me with this experience, and we did it in the middle of the week, so it was only us in the class so we got extra attention. Woo!! The instructor was patient, informative, and engaging. I had long nails, so we figured out the options to best continue to experience to compensate for them and it was a great success. We were there for about two hours, we started with looking at some examples, learning the basics, jumping right in, taking it step-by-step, then eventually creating our masterpieces! I think the best part is the decor/music/vibe. The groovy, colorful, 70's throwback style feels has your eyes wandering at every spot in the room; every section of the room is Instagrammable. Aside from the actual making of our mugs, the aesthetic of the place is my favorite part. The area its in, it really isn't that difficult to find parking, and pay attention to the instructions that is given to get into the building. The only negative is it is pricy, but they do offer memberships and the experience is worth it. Also, it takes about a month to receive what you created. I would not recommend it if you are not coming back to Philly. (Im not quite sure, but they may have a shipping option). I would totally recommend this to others as a cute date night, parent/child date, new adult learning opportunities, etc! read more

I purchased a Groupon for $43 BYOB one hour wheel throwing class for 2. The Groupon will only cover the 1st class. The glazing costs $20 per person for your return 2nd visit. The third visit is just to pick up your completed piece. I think it's a great date night, girls night, or mom/daughter type activity to do together! It's fun, new, different and who can say no to BYOB? I will say that the BYOB aspect is difficult for the first visit. It's tough to take a sip of your drink when your hands are covered in clay. We found that we were only able to drink either before we started our piece, or after we completed shaping it. As this was my first wheel throwing class, I felt like our first class could have had a bit of better instruction. It was very laid back which was great for nerves, but I feel like I needed more guidance on how to apply pressure and be able to shape different things. I was interested in potentially making a mug, or a dish of sorts - but maybe that is more of an advanced class and not for a first visit? Our instructor did mention that depending on how our attempts went, we might be able to make mugs - but we never circled back to that discussion after the first mention. Overall I enjoyed the process and would definitely recommend trying this out! I plan to come back with friends and will update my review if necessary! read more

My spouse purchased tickets for date night at Yay Clay. It was a fun and exciting experience. With that being said, it is hard! I feel like the instructor does these classes quite frequently because he was speeding through the instructions and that made it difficult to follow and understand what I was doing. I loved the fact that it was BYOB but be careful to not get too tipsy as you really have to pay attention! The class begins at the clay turntable with a ball of clay. You pick what you want to make, we decided on a mug and a bowl. The instructor gives you directions for each step and comes around to each person to check on your progress. He also makes corrections as needed. When you complete the shaping of your item, he then cuts off the excess and finishes the piece for you. Then, he cures it with torches. The last step is to personalize your item. There are stamps and all kinds of different things to help you personalize it. The instructor left us to our own devices here which I did not appreciate. I would've preferred he explain more how to do this and came around to check on everyone as he did on the turntable. Lastly, we got to chose the color of our item and took a picture with it. We were told we'd have to come back to pick it up in May which was unexpected. Overall, I had a great time and would absolutely do it again!! read more

I went for my birthday with a group of 11 people (including myself). The whole process from beginning (getting information, booking, adding more guests) to the end (getting there, making pottery) was so easy because the Yay Clay team was so nice and accommodating the whole time. I needed to change my numbers from 8 guest to 11 guest the week before and they were really accommodating to that. The Yay Clay team was there to answer questions about charges, parking. We had 1 Yay Clay teacher, Devin, for our party of 11. Super helpful. Came around and checked up on us throughout the process (it was the first time for many of us including myself). I bought this class on groupon and it was affordable. The place is near plenty of free street parking. The building kinda looks shady and the inside can look a little creepy. The building requires a code to get in. Theres 2 entrances so go to the entrance on Amber St. The code is included in your confirmation email. Once you enter the Yay Clay room, it's a whole different world. The room is very inviting, welcoming, colorful, and cool. There's art everywhere. The staff is super patient and nice. I really enjoyed this class. They inspire you to be creative and think outside the box. They also have great taste in music lol. There's different colors you can choose from. I mixed some colors together so I would ask them for advice on how to do that. Theres also different designs you can put on your piece. Because they require you to make a couple of visits, they understand how ppl can forget about their pieces. They will hold your piece for up to a year before throwing it out. Best experience since sliding out the womb! Took advantage of Valentines Day and dragged my wife down deep north Philly in the name of 'doing something different'. No disappointment here! The class was full and the instructors were fantastic, loose and talented! The directions we received before through email and text were on point so we were ready when we walked in and we're greeted with mimosas! The actual molding of clay was tougher than it looked but that made it fun and the class more determined. The instructors were hella patient and the place was clean and artistically cluttered. (Kiln & setup was BEAUTIFUL) We pick up our finished pieces in a couple weeks and I'll double back with that photo but this is something I'm interested in doing more often.
