Delicious candy from such a historic place! We come here about every 6mo to get an assortment about their chocolates. The service is always friendly and they're knowledgeable about allergens in their product. The fudge is tasty even if pretty sweet. And they tend to have cute holiday products. This is a place my kids always ask to go after events at the House of seven gables or walking from downtown. Unfortunately I don't eat chocolate but I believe this is an institution in Salem and everything I buy there people love. Cute and charming candy store right in front of the House of the Seven Gables. I came in right after finishing a visit to the Seven Gables and the store was empty at the time. I have a huge sweet tooth but I'm not a huge fan of non-chocolate old fashioned candies. However, they do carry truffles and a lot of other chocolate goodies. While I did stock up on chocolates, what I loved most about the store was the friendly employees who gave me advice on the area as a first time visitor and urged me to return for the Halloween festivities. read more

My husband and I were doing the walking tour around Salem one Saturday afternoon. We stopped in the Salem Visitor's Center to ask them what some points of interest were. When the lady said that there was the oldest candy store in America my pregnant ears perked up. Hell ya we were going to make that one of our stops! Once inside the store I felt like a child again. The smells were amazing! I asked the lady behind the counter what she recommended. She said that she liked the pecan turtles (which were featured in Oprah Magazine). In the past I had not been a fan of turtles, but I decided to give it a shot because of the recommendation. I also tried the coconut ball that had caramel on the inside. For two pieces of candy the total was almost $4 but I guess if anyone knows the candy business it's these people. After the first bite of my turtle, I fell in love. I am now a turtle fan. The coconut ball was delicious as well. If you are visiting the area I definitely suggest making this one of your stops! read more

Unbelievable. It's so friggin good. The cashew turtles are my favorite but the cherry cordials are a strong second. It's very close to my house but I manage to only stop by once in a while. Though chocolate is their speciality they also have lots of other candies. Not a penny candy store but a huge variety of bagged candies. That is what our grandchildren were looking for. The chocolate and fudge (I had the chocolate with nuts and marshmallows) were fresh and special. They offer many varieties of both. Best known for their turtles. The storefront of this (oldest in the nation!) candy shop is worn and faded, and we almost thought it was closed. When you open the door however, you step into a room packed with every type of candy you can imagine. From old fashioned maple drops to gourmet truffles, this place has them all. Right when we walked in, the most amazing chocolate smell filled the room. It was the sweetest smell surely to give your dentist a run for your money. The amount of different candies and chocolates were outstanding and was impossible to take in. The nice lady who was behind the counter was very friendly and welcomed my boyfriend and I in as soon as she saw us. We let her know that we weren't from the area and asked her for her recommendations. She explained Oprahs favorites, and began listing off the different kinds of turtles as well as her favorites. We finally decided on the turtle with cranberries (can't remember the name) and the sea turtle which was a dark chocolate turtle with sea salt as well as a bag of New England salt water taffy. She then explained that they sell candy online and SHIP WORLD WIDE. "If you can recover mail, you can have these chocolates sent to you." It was amazing to see the old candy making machines that they used to use before they decided to expand and just to learn about the history of the candies and the area itself. I highly recommend this place to anyone with a sweet tooth as big as mine. The milk chocolate that comes out of this place should make both Hershey's and Nestle's want to go out of business. The peanut brittle is something I hide up in the cupboard so nobody knows I have it. I keep thinking of "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory". "Oompa Loompas" must have made this stuff because real people certainly couldn't. It's too good. The best time to go is right before Easter. When they say Ye Olde, they mean it! This tried and true candy store has many many candies that you simply cannot find anywhere else. My favorites are the Gibralters, which are large triangle shaped candies that come in peppermint and lemon. The peppermint are lovely to suck on after a large meal. They also carry other old fashioned hard to find candy like Black Jacks. They have a large variety of delectable chocolates in the big glass case. This store has windows where you can watch the candy being made, and smells incredible in the summer. Kids love to check out the giant jar of Black Jacks that are over 100 years old. The only negative things I have to say is that this store is small, and very full or products, so it can get crowded easily. Also the decor hasn't been updated in MANY years, but maybe that's just part of it's charm. It is conveniently located across from the house of 7 gables. read more

Tho I really like their turtles- But I noticed recently they were closed down for construction. I can only Hope it was to CLEAN IT! Lots of dust and quite honestly when you look into back room through the glass wall it looked like garbage back there! Some of the things were very good; some not (for instance, the white almond bark, that I ended up bringing to work where they'll eat anything). This place is completely loaded with candy, with a ton of variety. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We picked up a small variety of things. After a tour of the House of the Seven Gables, we were about to drive off. My husband and friends have a radar for candy, and we reparked to go in. It is literally right across the street, and as other reviewers have said, it is small with 2 tiny parking spaces, and it is on a very narrow one way street. We didn't even notice it going to the House, but it was very much in view upon leaving. Once inside, the place is very small, and can hold maybe 10 people. They have all manner of old fashioned and handmade goodies. We got some hard maple candies (look like pasta shells or gnocchi) in a bag, an apple shaped chocolate lollipop, and fudge. They have bagged candies, holiday themed candy, and cases with fudges and truffles. I tried the maple walnut fudge and the peanut butter chocolate, both of which were very thick, and not overly sweet. The maple candies were interesting; almost like eating a spiced cookie, hint of sweetness, not really maple-y as others I've tried. It is definitely worth a pit stop to support a small business that has been in business for centuries! read more

Candy was very good, however the staff was extremely rude and unfriendly. The lady rushed me after I picked out what chocolates I wanted to get and I wasn't even offered a chance to order anything else. I wanted to get a couple pieces of fudge for my family. Then when I asked for a bag with handles the man refused to give one to me because I didn't order a lot of items. So I had to walk around Salem with this uncomfortable white bag after paying 40 plus dollars on stupid chocolate. Get a personality people. read more
