I took my 93 year old mom to Yen Oral Surgery after her dentist identified a problem that was causing a lot of pain. At that age, any type of procedure is worrisome, so I had some trepidation. I called and was able to get an appointment quickly. Immediately after scheduling the appointment, they sent me a link which allowed me to complete all the paperwork online before the appointment. This was a huge help, since I had to complete them on my mom's behalf. I was also able to upload her insurance cards through their online portal, so once we arrived at their office, we didn't have to do anything except focus on the appointment. The staff was very friendly, and very attentive and patient (haha) with my mom, waiting while I repeated everything so my hard of hearing mom could understand. Dr. Yen is the type of doctor who instills confidence and makes you feel like you are in good hands. He explained everything clearly, allowed ample time for questions, and was very caring. At my mom's age, getting her anywhere is a big ordeal, so I appreciated Dr. Yen's willingness to do the surgery immediately after the consultation, saving me from having to bring her back. Hanh was the dental assistant, and she saw my mom was nervous so kept reassuring her. Hanh, Dr. Yen, and everyone else on staff was just wonderful. The word that keeps coming to mind when I think of the staff at Yen Oral Surgery is 'kind'. Yes, they are all very professional, and Dr. Yen is clearly quite skilled and the surgery went well, but I love my elderly mom and really appreciated that everyone was simply so kind and caring, for her nerves, her tooth, and her overall well being. Tooth #2 has been a nightmare. Two failed root canals I was referred over by the root canal specialist Dr. Oller for a extraction and bone graft. I got in the next day for a visit, and was booked for treatment immediately. The staff is wonderful, the "quote" is clear and exactly that, an estimate of what my insurance will cover. The staff is a well oiled machine and work very well together. I met Dr. Yen, and he was extremely personable and caring. I did not feel rushed. I had treatment done under general anesthesia at my request, and was at ease leaving the appointment. Then I made the mistake of going on Tiktok and Instagram watching videos of aftercare and got really nervous. I almost cancelled but I am glad I didn't. When I returned for treatment, I did wait a bit long in the waiting room but Dr. Yen explained that when he entered the room, and the treatment staff was so kind and caring. I was clearly nervous and they really helped me get through it, I woke up with no issues or discomfort. I had the treatment 3 days ago, I have had ZERO pain. Slightly sore around my jaw, no swelling or bruising. I am so happy with my results so far, I will tell everyone about my wonderful experience. read more

The 1 star is primarily around Dr Yen. He is patient, through and overall did a good job with the extraction and follow up. That said the entire billing experience is very shady and misleading. In the initial consultation, I was informed that they have a contract with my employer and a discount(~85%?) and they provided me an estimate accordingly. Please do not fall for this, if they tell you this. Do your research, find out if they are in-network and definitely contact your insurance before you start treatment. Post treatment billing has been a nightmare. Their ledger kept adjusting. Earlier, they mentioned that the pending bill was a certain amount ( which is less than the yearly maximum that the insurance can cover). Once insurance mailed them a check for the yearly maximum, suddenly I see magical adjustment and I suddenly get a magic number added to my bill which I now owe. I ended up owing double the earlier estimate. If you are not concerned about medical/dental bills but just need a good oral surgeon, this is still a very good place. However, if billing/surprise expenses is a concern, please be very cautious *BEFORE* treatment. There are also lots of other options in the bay. I would suggest looking around. read more

Dr. Yen is fantastic! During my consultation, he was clear, thorough, and answered all of my questions. On the day of surgery, he was kind and made sure to address any concerns I had. He removed three of my wisdom teeth, including one that was under the gums. I expected to feel a lot more pain afterward, but honestly, my 5-hour tattoo session earlier this month hurt more . I was sedated, which made the experience less stressful. Now I understand why they don't want you to Uber home, because I don't remember much how I got home. They ask that you have someone there you know to take you home. What really stood out to me was that Dr. Yen personally called the next day to check in. That kind of follow-up shows how much he truly cares about his patients. I would definitely recommend him. I would go back to see him but I have no more teeth to extract lol read more

I wasn't blessed with the best set of teeth and I've had some recurring issues over the past few years. They got me in extremely fast and I was referred here from my new dentist. I live quite a ways away but the attention and care they give exceeded my expectations so that didn't matter to me. My root canal with a crown from a previous dentist had failed and had become extremely infected causing so much pain radiating to 3-4 of my other teeth as well as my jaw. They accommodated to my emergency and after being seen they got me into surgery the same day. I got it removed as well as a bone graft and implant and I had no problems since. They called to check up on me as well. I would definitely recommend them to anyone near and far! read more

Poor service. Lack of care. While I can fully pay for all services out of pocket without batting an eye, I do have insurance. Still, the facility spoke as if they wanted to reject my insurance. Before Dr. Yen would even consent to see me, he had me sign a financial agreement of responsibility. He is more interested in making sure he will get paid than actually rendering thoughtful care. The patient is secondary...if at all. After I spoke of insurance (after the initial consultation), he canceled my appointment to begin work, leaving me to look for another dentist and to start over again. While it is better that I find someone with actual integrity, this was not a pleasant experience. I speak of his character as I know nothing of the quality of his work. He has done none. read more

Two wisdom teeth extractions. Pre-visit you are able to fill out info online which saves time during the day of your appointment so you aren't filling out paperwork for 10-20 minutes. Insurance info/referral was sent from my Dentist so I didn't need to bring anything to my appointment except myself. Surgery went smooth since I was IV knocked out. Before the surgery you get info on what the process is and what's going to happen during the extraction. You get info on recovery after care. Front desk answered all of my post surgery questions and texted answers whenever they needed time to ask the doctor. Healing process is going as smooth as can be. Follow up appointment was one week after initial surgery and Dr yen confirmed I could eat regular food again. I'd recommended this place. My insurance covered most of the cost so no complaints about billing. read more

Very smooth surgery process. I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth and they put me in IV anesthesia so I wouldn't feel or remember a thing. The recovery process was great and it was only difficult to eat which is to be expected. Not a lot of pain after the wisdom teeth removal as long as you stay on top of your pain meds. Dr. Yen cares a lot about his patients and he's well knowledgeable and very experienced and I safely say you're in good hands with him. read more

The office seems newly renovated. Looks pretty nice and clean. The receptionist, Helen?, was pretty pleasant - greeted me with a smile. Nice touch is the cold water bottles in the waiting area. There is a consultation fee that I was notified of at the time of making an appt, when they gave me a confirmation call, and also before I was seated. Dr Yen was pretty pleasant as well. He explained everything to me thoroughly and showed me my xray on a big screen TV instead of a small lighted box, which is nice because I can actually see what I'm supposed to see. Luckily, I went in on a weekday and the staff called the insurance to get the estimated coverage from my insurance, after my consult. I did have to wait awhile to get the estimated coverage but they told me that it takes some time to get an ins rep on the phone. They emphasized that it is an estimated cost and the rest I need to pay the day of my procedure, which I knew I had to do that day because of my anxiety! They told me that depending on what the insurance paid, I'd either get a bill or a refund check. The procedure itself was very quick! I thought it would be painful but Dr Yen made sure I was comfortable. I didn't choose to pay for nitrous or sedation. So, I was super nervous! At least for me, the shot didn't hurt! I walked out pretty stunned that it wasn't as bad as I thought. What I was actually happy about was that Dr Yen personally called the day after to check up on how I was doing and explained all my concerns patiently. Props to this office. I am quite satisfied with the service! *update* I just got a reimbursement check from this office even before my insurance notified me. I'm glad I came here. What a great experience! This office is easy to get to and the staff is amazing. My daughter need all four of her wisdom teeth out. The way they use modern technology to educate their patients is wonderful. They still go through the necessary steps to answer questions and make sure everyone understands the surgery, recovery and the billing. The entire staff is wonderful - our doctor was very down to earth, friendly and confident. Dulce, our billing administrator, was extremely helpful and sweet. Even after the surgery, we had an issue with our coordinated benefits and she worked through the issue with me and she followed up, when she said she would. This office takes the safety of its patients seriously; everyone who comes in wears a mask, they have hand sanitizer at the front desk and they only allow 1-2 people in at a time. After my daughter's procedure, the nursing staff took such great care of her. They provided written directions, but also went over everything and gave us the opportunity to ask questions. This is a very routine procedure today and they are very competent and professional, but they also remembered we are people first and treated us with so much respect and care. Thank you! read more

I wish I never came here, and I hope you save yourself (and your wallet) and go somewhere else. Back in Nov 2021, I had two wisdom teeth removals here. I came, like many other people, from the recommendation from my dentist. They actually didn't take my insurance, and wouldn't run a bill for me to find out how much I'll pay. So like the other reviewers, I ended up paying a nice $2K outta pocket for a surgery that, in retrospect, I really didn't need. Like i said, I had two surgeries, and then I came back one month later due to swelling on my lower left socket. He cleans it out and it seems like everything is all good to go. I move across the country that day, and keep up with my medications, compresses, and no chew diet as told. Over the next month, I'm having jaw to ear pain. I think I have an ear infection (I dont). The pain keeps me up at night, every night. I'm popping a disgusting amount of ibuprofen daily to help with the pain. I call Dr Yen multiple times and he tells me everything is fine and to keep doing compresses and taking ibuprofen, even though it's hurting my stomach at this point. After dealing with this clown school doctor, and visiting multiple other useless clinics, I decide to see a new surgeon. He tells me I have a jaw infection and to go to the ER immediately. Thankfully everything went smoothly and after a $3K hospital bill I have a nice and shiny titanium jaw. Dr. Yen is truly lucky that I did not sue him. I won't. So my son's orthodontist recommended that my son get his wisdom teeth removed (due to the way they were growing). Since all of the wisdom teeth were still inside his gums, we needed help from an oral surgeon. The orthodontist referred us to this place. After reading quite a few positive Yelp reviews, I decided to contact them to make an appointment. I started out by emailing them to ask if they had any availability and whether they can assist my son with the service. The process took a few days because they did not respond to my email. Instead, I called them to follow up. The lady who picked up the phone acknowledged seeing my email but did not explain to me on why they didn't respond to it. Anyways, I proceeded to make the appointment and sent them a copy of my son's x-rays. A few days before the appointment, a lady called me to ask me for a copy of the x-rays, which I had to tell her that I already sent it in. On the day of the appointment, we had a consultation with one of the surgeons and he was super patient and friendly. He explained how the whole process works and answered all the questions I had. After the consultation, they started to prep my son for surgery. I was told that it would take an hour. I proceeded to pay for the surgery and made a follow up appointment. After the surgery, I was given a goodie bag (that included a one-year expired lip balm). By the next day, the oral surgeon had left me a voicemail to check up on my son (A+ customer service). I'm writing this to give people a heads up about the clinic based on my experience of four wisdom teeth extraction as I relied on the previous reviews for decision making. Short summary: bad service and questionable bill with nice doctor (the surgery was smooth). I chose this clinic because I found it in my insurance network and I thought the google review was pretty good - "doctor's skill is great and service is nice" - although I did see some complaints about billing, I did not care too much because I thought it would not be too ridiculous given that I have an insurance. I came to this clinic knowing that I needed to get four wisdom teeth removed according to my dentist in Illinois with an X-ray result. When I made an appointment, I said I was not sure whether having them all removed on the same day was safe and may need doctor's advice. So the lady set me up with an appointment with consultation + surgery. The day I came to the clinic, the first thing I felt is that the front desk is not welcoming. They barely smiled and were very cold when talking to me (the difference is clear comparing to my previous dental experience in Illinois). Next, I was in a room and watched a video about facts and risks about wisdom teeth removal, and then the doctor came in to further explain the risks and asked me to sign a risk disclaimer sheet. The doctor went through the risks so fast that I could hardly catch up, but I knew it was not a dangerous surgery and I need to have it done anyway. So even though I may not fully understand the risks it does not bother me much. Then a lady came in showing me the bill, $300 or $500 for the consultation fee (I don't remember the exact number as they did not give me a copy of the bill), for a service I was not provided for. Because they only did what they need to do for the surgery - disclaiming the risks. I did not consulted with anyone about the surgery at all - when I came to the clinic I said I need four wisdom teeth extracted and that's all. The total bill adds up to over $3,800 while my insurance only covers a maximum of $2,000. I was shocked at the bill as a whole so I was slow to realize that the consultation fee was unreasonable until on my check day I overheard another patient loudly complaining to receptionists that he was charged unreasonably for the consultation fee as well. The receptionist immediately apologized to the man and said they will cancel the consultation fee if it is unreasonable to him. I had always trusted clinics that they would only charge reasonable things and never questioned the legitimacy, but I found myself wrong that day. Back to the bill experience. It was my first time having a surgery in the U.S., and I was not sure about some terms on the bill so I asked the lady several times. She seemed impatient as if I asked too many questions. I told the lady it was too expensive, but she told me I either take the bill or choose not to have my surgery done today (my boyfriend already took a day off for the surgery and I didn't want to bother him too much), and said my bill was already very low. I thought that there was no room for negotiation and gave up. However, at the day I went back to check my recovery condition of the surgery, I heard other nurses welcomingly offering patients 5%-10% discounts and it made me feel stupid. I felt that I was discriminated and took advantage of because they saw me as a young Asian woman with an accent and who at the same times knew little things about the medical system and fair pricing in the U.S. The lady who showed me the bill was so rude and unsympathetic, it made me wondering why there were so many people feel good about their services or is it just me. It is hard to believe but I do feel being discriminated as an Asian at a seemingly "Asian" clinic. This clinic needs to enhance employee training on their services to patients because we do not come here to feel unwelcomed and not understood when we need to accept so many risks and uncertainties for the surgery, and definitely not to feel discriminated and took advantage of after the surgery's done. read more

VERY IMPORTANT: Check the medications they prescribe you while they are open the day before your surgery at the latest. When I called about the prescriptions that they sent (the pharmacy hadn't sent me an alert about recieving them, not Yen's fault), I discovered that they had missed the part on my entry form saying that I was allergic to Amoxycillin, and had prescribed it as my main antibiotic. Fortunately, they were open when I found out, so they were able to quickly change the prescription when I told them. Otherwise, I had a very pleasant experience, and the surgeon actually finished my extraction in half the time. I had to dock two stars because this mistake could have had potentially life-threatening consequences if I had not caught it, so I need other people to be aware and check the medications prescribed. read more

Dr Yen is fantastic. He removed all four of my wisdom teeth a few years ago and they have not grown back. He was incredibly fast for a man who is so bulky. Seriously, get his chest routine, the man is huge. I don't know where he finds the time to work out that much being a surgeon and volunteering in the community all the time. Perhaps pulling teeth is the best workout. Dr Yen is also very humble. He flossed my teeth during my initial oral exam. First of i would like to thank Dr. Yen for saving me from a bad toothache. Yen Oral Surgery office was very kind and accommodating with appointments! I was satisfied with the service that was provided to me. They asked me how the consultation went with Dr. Yen, if there are any other questions or concern i might have forgotten to ask. The receptiin the front are very kind and friendly. So i had said to them no, Dr. Yen explained the concerns i have in regards to my toothache and he also gave me options of what i can do to replace a missing tooth. So, moving with the service they also are very thorough with the dental insurance coverage i had. They helped me submit a claim to my dental insurance. Once everything was explained to me i was ready to get my bad toothache removed and i was walked down to another room for the surgery to be done and i was very nervous and felt numb walking down with the assistant that helped Dr. Yen, who was also very kind and tried to calm me down. And as soon as i was placed in the room she asked me if i wanted to watch T.V. to calm myself down and not think about the surgery. So, after getting numb i waited a few minutes to get numb and not knowing i was done in less than an hour! I was amazed! And the assistant also was very helpful with going over the instruction i need to know after and what is not to do. Also if i had a question or any concern to give them a call. I called my local dentist and he was fully booked until April, nightmare for anyone who is feeling extreme pain. My dentist referred me to Dr. Yen and very fortunately, I was able to schedule an appointment the very next day. The staffs were extremely helpful and patient and I was informed every step of the way. The extraction process was very fast and I did not feel any pain at all, during and after the extraction. My wife had her extractions done here so I decided to go with them. I just had two extractions and one corenectonomy done and will try to list the pros and cons for each aspect: 1. About Dr Kevin Yen: As you talk to him you will know he is a top doctor and an expert in the field. No doubt about that. I will definitely recommend the doctor to anyone without any hesitation. Even though he decided to do the coronectonmy on Friday, he asked for and made sure to look at the CT scans before surgery on Monday and even accommodated me early morning before his other appointments. Can't thank him enough for that. BUT he is super busy and having a direct conversation with him is virtually impossible. All questions will go through the front desk to Kevin and you know whenever there is a middle person involved, the communication is not efficient and lacks clarity. Same thing happened with me: I had asked about local vs full anesthesia over email to the front desk and they just kept saying it's in ur record as local. But I knew the doctor could decide otherwise as I wasn't able to open my jaw fully which also I emailed. I didn't get clarity on this and prepared for local after asking again at front desk a few mins before surgery but I don't think my message went to the doctor. I just had light protein drink thankfully so that I could delay eating for a few hours after surgery. One of the other doctors did mention staying on empty stomach for general Anaesthesia but I was trying to avoid general anesthesia because of a medical condition and I never got the chance to fully communicate the all this context and my condition and clarify if general is the way to go. If I had a few minutes with Kevin directly I could have clarified this earlier and avoided a lot of stress in the surgery room as they had to go with general anesthesia in the last minute. It's almost impossible for the front desk to understand the entire medical context and communicate it precisely to the doctors 2. About Dr Verlindon: Over the weekend my issue flared up but Dr Verlindon reached out multiple times and addressed my concerns. So thankful to Dr Verlindon for putting in extra hours over weekend to help out. That was immensely helpful as I was stressing out over the infection spreading faster than expected towards my throat and also upwards in the head. Can't thank him enough for this. he even responded at night when I needed painkillers but the prescriptions were not available st any pharmacy and we had to go back to him multiple times. 3. About front desk: All are very polite, and caring and took care of routing my questions to the doctors whenever I reached out. Billing was clearly communicated, clarified and clearly called out that coronectonmy needs a review from insurance company. I clearly understood the risks and was comfortable proceeding forward from a cost standpoint. The issue is the problem with communication model I described above. 4. About Surgery Room support Staff: this is where I had the bad experience which makes me take away another star. As mentioned above after trying local anesthesia, Kevin had to switch to general and Recommened the same in last minute. But I had two concerns- one on a medical condition and another on the drink I took few mins before surgery. Kevin really helped me by talking about the evidence of vomiting and food filling the lungs after general anesthesia. Really appreciate him for that because I am an evidence based decision maker and Kevin's explanation struck a chord with me. He also considered the medical condition and Recommened going forward with general anesthesia. All good until here the worst part was with his support staff in surgery room. While I am trying to get a second opinion from my sister WHO IS ALSO A DOCTOR and fully knows my medical history, this assistant is happily laughing and mocking at me while I try to communicate with sister and wife. I don't know what was so funny when I am trying to take right decision regarding my health. First she put my phone on silent and told me boldly that she was going to do it. Finally she gave some crappy explanation of keeping all my stuff in the visitor lobby and took my phone away so that I couldn't call anyone. I was about to go WTF but had my own problem to solve so controlled my emotions & just shut up. This lady needs some training in treating people with respect & empathy All she cared about was prepping me quickly and then I had to wait for 5 to 10 mins for Kevin to arrive anyway And to add to this another assistant who was setting up the equipment too spoke in a rude tone asked me to not call anyone as they were under time constraint to get me ready. They obviously don't have the scientific thinking and just laugh and giggle when they see other people suffering. I got my wisdom teeth extracted here on the 28th of December. The staff working was so sweet and welcoming. The procedure itself was completely painless. I believe it only took about 30 minutes to extract all four of my wisdom teeth. My mouth healed pretty quickly, and I did not feel a lot of pain. After the procedure, I was taken to lie down for a couple of minutes before I was taken home. The staff was really good at answering any questions and concerns I may have had. I had an implant placed by another doctor. It became infected and he attempted to treat the infection. The infection would come and go. One year later and with a friend's recommendation, I had a consultation with Dr. Yen and he explained everything thoroughly. I was so nervous but I was able to calm down because of the gentle music and the nice staff. On day of surgery, I was so nervous, his injection to numb the implant area was painless, and my experience with removing the implant was definitely much better than the placement by the first dentist. I came back to get my new implant and the experience was just as good as the time I removed the infected implant. This time, this office added a TV on the ceiling so that I can sync my phone and watch or listen on the TV. Again, I had a very good experience. Dr. Yen made sure I was fully numb and the procedure was much quicker than I expected. I have a few more implants to get and I know I will be coming back here to get it. read more

Do yourself a favor and seek out another dentist for your oral surgery. Dr. Yen may be good, I would not know as he did not perform my tooth extraction, nor the follow up. I only met him on my 4th visit to his office, and then he acted as though we had met before. WTF? He asked me if I had a dental implant, when my file was displayed on the BIG SCREEN monitor and clearly had no implants identified. Maybe he should have taken some time to actually read my patient file before hand? My other problem is how the office prebills for procedures you "may" require up front, even before your dental coverage is estimated. The extraction was poorly done, the stitches were supposed to come out and didn't. I had to cut out the double knotted stitch after 3 weeks of dealing with it hanging loose in my mouth. And yes, I did contact the office who commented "That's normal." No, it is not, from my experience with other oral surgical procedures. In the end, it was about 2500 for a tooth to be pulled and the bone graph to be started. Not worth it. read more

I cannot express how much appreciation i have for this place and it's staff. Every single person i spoke to from the moment i called with questions to the second i walked out was just amazing within themselves. I truly felt that they wanted to help me. Not for the money either because i have been begging for a month to pay anyone to pull this tooth that has me crippled 24/7. The pain was so bad i couldn't sleep for the last 3-4days. Had no relief and just a growing never ending pain. Everyone just wanted to keep giving me pills to mask it but i told them i didn't want our take them because they didn't help the pain, yes pain that bad!!! This place got me in the same day in and out in less then an hour and charged me so fairly!!! Everyone will be hearing about this place from me!!!! read more

Dr Yen did a great job on my teeth but when I picked techies he got super mad and wouldnt stop yelling at me

I am rarely suggesting services except they are excellent. I took four wisdom teeth as once and Everything is going smoothly. No pain... the customer service is excellent,, they are taking away your concerns really well by explaining, answering all of your questions !!! read more
