Dr. Kevin Yen is the best! Holy moly I was dealing with the absolute worst tooth ache (my fault for never going to the dentist!) I was told by another doctor to get the tooth checked out. Dr. Yen was able to take care of me right away! His bedside manner was awesome. What a cool dude. He comforted me and I knew I was in good hands. The tooth was pulled in a matter of minutes. No pain at all... just some pressure as he mentioned. He gave great instructions afterwards. Once the numbing wore off, I was still feeling way better than when I first got in there. This was honestly one of the best dental appointments I have ever had... and I even got a tooth pulled! Very impressed. I will recommend my friends if they ever need some work done. read more

I had an emergency and called the office for being late for 10 -15 minutes about 30 minutes before the appointment time. They mentioned that was their last appointment and can not wait. In earlier day appointment we were ~10 minutes earlier and they made us to wait 45-60 minutes. Other office from them in Milpitas I had much better experience. read more

Dr. Kirk himself is a great doctor and I was very happy with the last procedure I had with him. However, I would have to agree with the other reviewers that his front desk situation needs work. Completely disorganized and is causing a huge delay in my treatment. I have been waiting in the office for 2 hours even though I made an appointment. They are blaming it on the fact that it takes an hour to reach the insurance company on the phone, but if my appointment was at 10am and it's now 12pm, couldn't they have figured it out an hour ago? Also, I'm pretty annoyed that they suggested that I come back on another day because they're about to close soon. I definitely didn't wait over an hour not to be seen! - Edit: Despite what happened today, I can't be mad at Dr. Kirk and his assistant. Both made me feel very comfortable and I'm barely in any pain after removing two wisdom teeth. In fact, the only medication I'm taking for it right now is OTC Ibuprofen and it's been hours since my procedure. Whoo! read more

I extracted my wisdom teeth over 2 operations a year apart - right side then left side, at age 24-25. I received operations from Dr Kirk Yen and then Dr Kevin Yen. They both share many great qualities and the office staff made me very welcomed. Both Dr Yens gave me thorough explanation of the procedure, and explained risks. Once I was comfortable, the operation was done with local anesthesia. The extraction was quickest part of the visit, about 2mins per tooth! I got some stitches and revived instructions for post op care. Receptionist made a follow up appointment before I left. Side note: Dr Kevin Yen called me the next day to make sure everything is ok! I recovered in 2 days after first operation, was able to chew solid food the first day (this is a big nono, sorry Dr Yen!!). I had swelling before second operation and recovered in a week. I can honestly say Dr Kirk and Kevin Yen are experts in their field and I almost cannot understand the common perception of wisdom teeth extraction after my visits. I did learn it would be much worse extracting during teenage years when the teeth are buried (i.e. fully impacted). read more

I came to Dr. Yen as a reference from my dentist, and I am very glad that I didn't have to do much research on coming to an excellent oral surgeon. I had to remove 3 wisdom teeth and I was dreading the whole ordeal due to friends and colleagues telling me of the pain and hassle with it. However, Dr. Yen made me feel comfortable during my initial consultation with him, allowing me to go into the operation relaxed and confident. Post-op: Everything went very smoothly, and to my surprise, I was able to go back to work the following day with minimal pain and discomfort. Dr. Yen called that day to follow up on how I was feeling and it was nice to see that he cares about his patients. My dentist recommended me to Dr. Yen to have my implant done, and I was not disappointed. Dr. Yen was extremely professional and very nice for each and every one of my visits. He talked me through everything he did and his assistants made me feel very comfortable. My last visit was to have my implant put in (yay!), and I was extremely satisfied with the results. I'm 26 and I needed to get my wisdom teeth taken out. A friend of mine recommended Dr. Yen, so I called and set up an appointment. Even though his time is valuable, he thoroughly went over all the info about my extraction. Before the surgery, I had a full understanding of the risks, what to expect post-surgery, and all the options I had during the operation. He gave me a very reasonable price to remove all four of my impacted wisdom teeth. To save some money, I decided to go with local anesthesia and stayed awake for the procedure. Admittedly, I was very apprehensive going in. Fortunately, Dr. Yen was not only professional, but also compassionate. He constantly made sure I felt comfortable, and would always tell me what was coming before he did it. This made the entire experience much less like a horror film. After the surgery, Dr. Yen gave me a summary sheet with all the steps I needed to take for a speedy recovery. I'm not sure if I have Wolverine-like gums or if Dr. Yen simply did an amazing job, but I did not have any pain the next day. My cheeks barely swelled at all. My dentist told me that I had an ingrown tooth that needed to be removed from my gum. He explained the procedure. It sounded painful. I made a call to the office (after looking this place up on Yelp, I was anticipating a rude office manager) and the office manager picked up. Crap. I asked to make an appointment. She put me on hold for a few minutes and then scheduled the appointment shortly after. It wasn't too bad. I went in a week later, still a little nervous about a painful procedure and a terrifying front desk lady. However, the staff I met seemed friendly and I met with Dr. Yen shortly after. He is very calm and friendly, and that made me instantly at ease. He went over the procedure with me, placed me under anesthesia, and when I woke up--the procedure was done. I went out after and lived life. No pain. No sassy assistants. Good and professional service. Five stars. read more

After getting my X-rays done with Dr. Yen to get my wisdom tooth extracted, I found out he was not in my insurance network. I tried looking for a different doctor but after postponing it for some weeks, my teeth started hurting badly, the worst they've ever hurt. I lasted a week with pain until I couldn't take it no more and finally, I went to Dr Yen to make an appointment. I was surprised they were able to see me the same day and after only 30 minutes of surgery, I got all four teeth taken out. I imagined I'd be feeling terrible after the procedure especially with all four teeth out, but to my amazement I was feeling good that same night. I did have some mild pain but Dr. Yen prescribed painkillers that worked wonders. My jaws did not swell up nor did my wounds open up. The bleeding stopped the same day. The next day I was eating solid foods like noodle soup with eggs boiled in. Later that day i tried carne asada and cheetos (of course avoiding chewing in the area). I was able to brush my teeth and go about my regular day. I am happy that I chose Dr. Yen to extract my teeth. From the very helpful and patient front desk nurse to the very comforting assistant that made me feel less nervous, their team is an A+. I was also happy to hear from the nurse checking up on me to make sure I was doing okay. Although I didn't have a lot of (conscious) time with Dr. Yen, you know the man knew what he doing. I was referred to Dr. Yen's office from my original Dentist for my wisdom teeth issues. I needed an oral surgeon because my wisdom teeth had been neglected by my original Dentist for so long that now, the lower two were so close to my nerves that I needed a specialist. I was reccommened first to a different oral surgeon but she wanted me to go to an Oral Specialist from UCSF and I didn't have time for that so Dr. Yen was my second referral from my Dentist. To begin with, the first appointment was good, informative, and relatively fast. I forgot my xray, which is my fault obviosly, from my dentist that Dr. Yen's office needed to contact my Dental office for them and that delay took about 10-15 minutes for them to get the email. (There's a review about this office not having your xray ready but it's the patient's responsibility to provide it from their referring dental office so this office was very accommodating for acquiring it so promptly.) His office assistant had me fill out the normal paperwork required asking for my insurance and health history which was about 3 to 4 sheets back and front. As I waited for and went through my appointment, she called both of my providers, checked my maximum coverage, and wrote down a break down of the cost for surgery down to every last medication and consultation in order to quote me the amount due before surgery. It was fantastic, she was fast, detailed, organized, and thorough. She wasn't the friendliest but definitely reliable. Dr. Yen is very soft spoken and has a bit of dry humor so he's probably difficult for people to find welcoming in a warm sense but he's very informative if you listen and very responsive if you have questions. I know this for a fact because I had a million questions and he answered all of them with confidence. He did however, ask for a specific xray (Cone V), that I had to get done else where and that cost me $150 out of pocket. It was worth it because we were both more comfortable after the results of the xray which confirmed that my tooth was VERY close if not TOUCHING a nerve. Scary. He requested a second consultation before the appointment for surgery but I couldn't make it down so I requested a phone consultation, he complied and it was great because he simply left me a very detailed but brief message about the situation. On the day of surgery, I threw him a curve ball and decided not to be put to sleep for my surgery since my father had some memory loss due to anesthetics, and I share very similar health patterns to my dad that I went with not risking it. So, he did the surgery with me numbed and awake and spent the whole time asking if I was okay and made sure to check in constantly while giving me directions to help him out. The surgery which was terrifying in the beginning, ended up being not that bad. Still painful afterwards but I did have ALL 4 of my wisdoms removed. I left with a prescription for pain killers and antiobiotics that I went to go fill at my Kaiser. (I'm not sure why there are negative reviews about the recptionist not calling in their prescription at Kaiser or anywhere, since that's not their job. ) If you want your wisdoms pulled out by a confident Oral Surgeon and you want fast, reliable, and detailed service, this is pretty much as good as it gets without all the fluff. I was referred to Dr. Yen by my both Dentist Dr. Nick Nguyen and Dr. Yokota. After researching on the internet about wisdom tooth extract, I walked into Dr. Yen's with a great of fear. After watching a short video explaining the procedures, Dr. Yen walked in to examine my teeth. Dr. Yen explained very thorough about the procedures and what anesthesia option I may choose to have. Dr. Yen took time to answer all my questions. He was very patience and kind. After the consultation, I've decided to go to sleep throughout the procedures to avoid any drama I may have to experience. I need to say that Dr. Yen's office equipped like a mini hospital, it was very impressive. His staffs were also super nice. Anyway, I had my wisdom tooth extract for about 7 hours now. I have no bleeding, no pain and so greatful for Dr. Yen that I have to write this review. Dr. Yen is perhaps the most experienced, professional and friendly oral surgeons around. I came to him to have all of my wisdom teeth pulled out, and I didn't feel a thing! Nor did a feel a thing the day afterwards... Nevertheless, even though I was nervous about the procedure, he made my visit very comfortable and explained every step of the procedure to me, as well as what I would be feeling, what I should and shouldn't do afterwards, what to expect, etc. The procedure was relatively quick, but I could tell that he took great care with each step. Call #1: I got a call back from the office manager who was very rude. You know when you get the tone from a person. "You need me more than I need you." I ask to make an appointment. Deanna, the office manager informed me that I need that entire day off of work and the next day too to recover. I ask for a moment to check my schedule. While I take a moment Deanna ask impolitely if I am still there. I ask if I can call back. Call #2: I call back inform Deanna who I am. She puts me on hold for five minutes. After five minutes she says, "I'm still holding." "Wait you put me hold for five minutes" "Ok anyways" WTF am I talking to a teenage kid? "Uhh anyways? (insert expletives)" She hangs up Call #3 I am put on hold again. I ask to speak to Dr. Chen. Deanna informs me that she is one who makes the appointments so if I want to make an appointment I should speak to her. I told her I want to make a complaint. She confronts me on my language. Fair enough I should not use that kind of language. I told her I still need to make that appointment. She says she need to go to her desk and she puts me on hold again? WTF? Where are you and how far is your desk? Call #4 "What's your address?" (For yelping purposes) I was put on hold for another five minutes. Verdict: No appointment was made. read more

First off this place would be A LOT better if they replaced the lady at the front desk. I called to schedule to have my wisdom teeth extracted. The lady told me that particular week was full but there was an opening the following week. The day before she called me personally to confirm the appointment. When I got there it turned out that she double booked and I had to wait 2 HOURS before I could be seen. Before the surgery she and I set a time for my follow up appointment for the following week. After the extraction of all 4 wisdom teeth I was okay for a few hours but once all the medication wore off the pain was near unbearable but I did have some pain meds prescribed that helped with that, the next day I didn't feel well at all. I waited another day and I felt even worse and I was in A LOT of pain so I took my temperature which read 102..I called the dentist office, she answered and I told her I needed to speak to the dentist that did my surgery I was having complications and she asked what was going on..I told her I had a fever and was in pain..she told me that was normal, I'd be fine and she didn't forward any information to the doctor. The next day my fever was up to 104 and I couldn't take it, I went to my doctor where they informed me that I had a terrible infection and NO it was NOT normal for that to be the case. I received antibiotics and a rinse that helped to numb my mouth and throat. A day short of a week later I called her back to confirm my follow up appointment for the next day and she told me she forgot to put me down and that I'd have to schedule an appointment. I don't know what her issue was but she made the experience TERRIBLE.. Dr. Yen was very nice but my procedure was very intense and painful starting about 3 hours after the surgery and about 8 days after that, he claimed the teeth were deep down in there that's why I was in so much pain and that's why it would take a long time to heal, to this day, months later I still have pockets that have never closed back..I honestly wouldn't recommend this place at all. I mean if its your only option and its an emergency, but consider going else where first read more

They took good care of me and I liked that they answered my vast amount of questions. I had all 4 extracted and came back one week after for a follow up. Kind and respectful. Deanne the front desk lady is so rude. She scheduled my wisdom teeth extraction appointment without realizing that they had not gotten the authorization. I wasted 2 hours waiting and arguing because she couldn't admit her mistake. She kept talking about her weekend spent with her "boyfriend" with a co-worker while a few of us were waiting. Now who wants to give an oral surgeon 5 stars lol. I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled on 01/18/13 and I was nervous. All the staff made me feel at ease and good customer service skills. Any questions asked they were willing to give answers and explain thoroughly. My left side was easy didnt feel anything, right side was impacted and I was definately soar and a little swollen but thats normal. I got 2 wisdom teeth removed on right side, I did not have pain or swelling at all, only took one ibuprofen after it due to my fear of pain. Dr. Yen called to f/u on Saturday which is so touching. I would definitely recommend him to my friends. The only thing I am not happy is the front desk gave me a wrong date on Thursday, the office is close on Thursday. Would highly recommend Dr. Yen to anyone needing oral surgery. From the moment I walked in (as a literal walk-in) to the moment I walked out after a post-op appointment, I was very impressed with Dr. Yen, his staff, and the overall environment of his practice. Upon my walk-in, they were able to accommodate me for a consultation to get my wisdom teeth extracted and took a look right then and there. The receptionist/office manager was patient with me and explained the process from there (I needed pre authorization from my dental insurance). She explained that it would take 4-6 weeks for authorization and once it came in we could schedule the appointment. Fast forward, everything was approved, I was called and we scheduled the appointment. I was super nervous the day of (having never had anesthesia before), but all the staff including Dr. Yen were very kind and understanding. The extraction was quick and easy and the pain was minimal. Dr. Yen personally called me the next day to see how I was, which I thought was awesome. At the post op appointment he said everything looked good and not to hesitate to contact him if I have any issues moving forward. Overall, great experience from a caring doctor and staff. read more

Very poor service and unorganized receptionist. I took my kid into the office for extract 4 of teeth after appointment made. After waiting for 30mins, then the Dentist came in and checked it out, then going to do the extracting teeth. But suddenly the receptionist told him that it wasn't have enough time to extract all 4 of teeth. She asked me to reschedule another time and also asked me to pay $168 for deductible. It's so ridiculous and really unprofessional at all. So, I decided to stay away from this dentist and receptionist. read more

This is my first review ever and although I am a tolerant person by nature, I was disappointed by this clinic. I was referred here by my dentist for 2 extractions, 1 wisdom tooth and 1 premolar. My appointment was at 10.30 and I had to fill out the paperwork and watch the educational video on wisdom teeth which did not take long. Dr. Kirk finally bothered to show up after 1 hour...!!! I believe he was busy with other patients. Then, why give an appointment at that time?? Dr. Kirk is a very senior person and moves and talks slowly. At first, I was not sure if he was competent enough but he managed to do a good job. I opted for local anesthesia, it was quick and all the drilling and tapping going on inside my mouth was a little scary at the beginning but bearable if you have been to dentists as often as I have ;) The doctor's assistants were very sweet and professional. Post-surgery, I experienced pain, bleeding and swelling and had to take medication, but that is expected with any surgery. The only 2 things that I was disappointed about was that they are not very open about their charges and I felt a little ripped off for the amount they charged me. I was told that I would be charged 25% of the amount but I did not know that they would charge my insurance $1000 for 2 extractions under local anesthesia and I would end up paying $250 from my pocket...!!! The office manager could have told me that in advance. Although I have a follow-up appointment, I am not opting to get any more procedures done here. Also, the long wait for the doctor to show up seemed very unprofessional. Kindly confirm the charges with the not-so friendly office manager before you go (although I doubt she would help you) and be ready to wait a long time to be seen by the doctor. read more

Was referred here by my dentist to get my wisdom teeth removed. All 3... yes, I only had 3. Scheduled my appointment and came in for the consultation. The doctor was very knowledgeable and straightforward. Came in the following week and got them removed. I was scared at first because I have never been put to sleep, but before I knew it they were waking me up and telling me I was all set. Was brought home and slept for a couple of hours... Went to see my dentist a couple of weeks afterwards and she was surprised at how quickly I healed. Getting invisalign next month! read more

I needed to have one of my molars removed due to a fracture. I was very nervous but Dr. Yens assistant helped to calm my nerves and make me as comfortable as possible. Dr. Yen was very friendly and professional. He keep checking through the procedure to make sure I was ok. The staff made sure that I understood the post op instructions and informed me of how to get ahold of them in an emergency if any complications. I was referred to Dr. Yen by my family friend to have all four of my wisdom teeth extracted. I was very nervous and did not speak English well, glad he was very fluent in Chinese so that I have a better understanding of all the risks and benefits of having surgery. They put me asleep for the process, after that they schedule me a check-up date which is free to see how I am doing after the surgery. Very good doctor, but the office assistants suck...Not cooperating with you at all. I had two insurances and it would have perfectly cover the cost but because she didn't want to pickup the damn phone and call the insurance agency, i had to go through so much hassle of filing directly...very lazy assistants work there. An altogether positive experience. After an extraction, the only medication I required was two aspirins. Thats it! The day after the extraction it was if nothing had been done. Dr. Yen is beyond competent, caring and gentle. Contrary to some of the other reviews, I found the office staff to be courteous and efficient. Highest recomendation. read more

I was recommended by my family dentist and I got all of my wisdom teeth pulled in one sitting by Dr. Yen. When I came for a consultation I read over some pamphlets about the procedure and when Dr. Yen came in he pretty much repeated the same thing. They were able to schedule the extraction a week after the consultation. Staff was a little disorganized, I had to sit and wait awhile even though I came in on time. The x-ray machine seemed to be malfunctioning so the left side came out blurry. They probably tried three times before they showed Dr. Yen the image and he said "We can work with this." He said local anesthesia would be enough to deal with the pain since none of my teeth were impacted and I agreed since I've had one tooth extracted before so how bad could 4 be? During the middle of the procedure he told me my left lower wisdom tooth was impacted and he would have to break apart the tooth the take it out. He would've known this earlier if the x-ray came out clear -_- but he talked me through what he was going to do and told me to keep my eyes closed. I took his advice once I saw the drill... Anyway, after I had a pretty quick recovery. I didn't even use up the painkiller prescription. The impacted side took a little longer to stop being sore and I pretty much had no swelling. Dr. Yen is good at what he does! Hopefully his X-ray machine is fixed now. read more
