Here, one can find charming hand-painted, up-cycled wooden vessels; well-wrought laser-cut metal wall-sculptures that convey dimensionality even though they are just 2-D (still want that 1964 Mustang that looks like it is going to drive off of the wall); and skillfully painted oils and water colors. The common denominators are two: All of the work is local and the owner, Shirley, personally selects the artists. Shirley is a former art teacher and an artist in her own right. Indeed, some of her work hangs in the gallery. Shirley drips with southern charm and hospitality as she cheerfully discusses a piece or artist. No hushed tones or pretentiousness here. Although the gallery's posted hours are limited, Shirley welcomes guests by appointment. All you have to do is ring her up.

You can also rent this space out for events. This would be an awesome place to come. It's a cute date night as well. Walk about the city and stop in for a nice art experience. It's not a large space by any means (especially during the pandemic) but they feature all local art from paintings to multimedia, fused glass, and sculptures. When Durham used to have (and will have again one day) the Third Friday Art Walks, this was one of our regular stops. The art is mostly modern and lively. There were plenty of paintings, wood pieces, sculptures, glass objects, and more. They even had cheaper options like postcards if you just want a little item. All of the work seems to be from local artists, so that is always a plus with us. We'd stop in again the next time we're in town.

It's all thanks to Rod O. for his stellar review that I made my way to Adam Cave Fine Art and I can assure you I will return. The gallery itself is in an old building directly on Hargett Street (next door to Landmark Tavern). Walk up the old, creaky, wooden steps to a beautiful, open room with hardwood floors, bright natural lighting and paintings hung all around. The gallery consists of three separate rooms and has rotating exhibits every 1.5 months or so. The current exhibit, David Dunlop, is an incredible treat to view with beautiful nature and city scenes painted on aluminum with oils (exhibit on display until April 19th!) Although there were only a handful of people upon our visit, Adam Cave, the owner, was greeting everyone and interacting with them on a personal level. There was also complimentary cheese and wine being offered which was a very classy touch on a Sunday afternoon. I checked the website to see if there was a calendar of events so you'd know when they'd be offering these type of perks in the future, but didn't see any information. I did sign up for the e-mail per Adam's request, so hopefully I'll be updated on future events and exhibits through that. Adam Cave Fine Art Gallery is definitely a must visit during First Friday, and will now certainly be on my list (and it's so convenient to anyone already downtown!) I highly recommend giving the gallery a try, I guarantee anyone that appreciates art will appreciate the gallery and you can't help but feel you've stepped back in time as you walk up the flight of steps into a world of beauty in a beautifully restored building.

Today, finally while driving past u saw that the open sign was on so I decided to make a quick stop and check it out. While I had a sort of strange and short experience I'll start with what I saw. Full of trinkets and a variety of items, it seems like a fantastic little spot to explore. The interior was not large, a small little shop likely food for a handful of people at a time, packed with things ranging from fun dishes, records, clothing, and random knickknacks. There was a little library outside along with larger pieces like statues and even some art pieces inside. Now I would love to go back and properly explore, get a better gauge of the pricing as well, but the reason I said "seems" earlier is that when I arrived, the lights were on, open sign was on, door was open. I walked in and there was some radio playing. But not a single person in sight, mind you it's a small space. I said "hello" a few times, stood there in plain view in case anybody walked out (last thing I wanted was to spook somebody on accident being behind a shelf or anything), and heard no response. I stood there a couple minutes, just looking around, but was a tad uncomfortable, not due to the place just the situation, and thus decided to leave and come back another time to more properly explore this space that seemed like a blend of an antique store and a child's playhouse. At least I now know their hours so I'll try again soon!

Only problem was that it was literally 5 minutes before they closed. The woman working there (not the owner) was SUPER friendly and welcomed us even though we definitely kept her late. We bought two items from the Art-O-Mat and the employee urged us to look around before we left, again SO nice considering it was now past closing. The shop has something for everyone from local pottery to hand carved wood and other really gorgeous textiles. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
