The food was amazing, they are number 1 now in my burger search. It's an older establishment, but it was very clean. The service was excellent as well. Put this on your list of places to try. They also have a full bar, darts machine.

We walked in at about 4:00pm on a Wednesday afternoon and it was a ghost town! I think a tumbleweed blew past my leg. I was immediately displeased. Luckily my boyfriend insisted we stay and eat some food. This was our first visit to Brainerd ad new were a little scared we had ventured into the wrong place. This place is a dive. This is a dive bars dive bar. But guess what?!?! The food was really good!! I had a chicken, mushroom, Swiss burger. My boyfriend had a regular mushroom, Swiss burger and they both turned out great! I was really surprised. I was just so expecting to be disappointed. I can honestly say that I don't think I would want to spend my Friday or Saturday night hanging out here (it just felt depressing), but if traveling through again I would entertain the idea of stopping for another burger. Ps. The bartender was super friendly. Pss. The jalapeño fritters are HOT and delicious. Cash only establishment!

Wide open and surprisingly modern given the name!

Looking for local and found it. Just a block off the faded downtown in the same building (but separate) as the elks club is this. A fairly modern, spacious, clean bar with pool tables , TVs, pinball and dart machines scattered about. Lots of seating around the bar and at a dozen or so tables of various heights. The bar features a surprisingly good selection of tap beers! All listed by alc and ibu. Very friendly and helpful bar tender who seemed to be managing a small Wednesday crowd well by himself. Oh, the food you ask? Very good. I recommend the onion rings. They specialize in burgers it seems, and the burgers are very good. One note is that the burgers are ala carte another is that they were cooked about a step more than requested (med rare was med etc) A good place to stop for burgers and beer!

Picked this place based on the pictures I found on yelp and Google. Was not disappointed. One of the best Patty melts I've ever had!

That was a good burger. Quality beef. Familar, small town feel. There were even games laying around to play.

Pretty typical neighborhood bar. Drinks were cheap & they are the only bar with a pool table downtown Brainerd!

Glad we didn't let the outside scare us away. The burgers were outstanding and the homemade onion rings were terrific.

Hands down the best onion rings I've ever had and you have to get the habanero ranch (both of which are homemade).

So I thought I'd check in on one of my favorite chefs Matt Annand (featured in the MN Homegrown cookbook) and sadly Prairie Bay is closed. But he's now running the show at Notch*8. He's still bringing the good stuff - elevated but recognizable supper-club style wedge salad, tender brisket on focaccia with an onion soup jus that was so satisfying. (Literally- I could make a post about the jus) The show stopper? This off menu (but I'm told it could become a regular) desert has no name as of yet - but I'll give you my take... Zabaione takes a trip to the lakes region and cosplays as a roasted marshmallow - falls in love with the local berries and settles down in a house with a view. Make sense? The zabaione had a perfect balance/consistency- but the brûlée at the end was brilliant. I was here "out of season" for local fruit but I know Matt is committed to local sourcing - so an excellent dish will only get better with "in season" fruit. (I'd love to have seen a kernza flour + hazelnut cookie on top - but that may be gilding the lily) great job crew!
