A classic Grand Rapids fixture, Yesterdog indeed excels at the hot dog experience. The place has an eclectic vibe with lots of memorabilia from the 30's, 40's and 50's, including an old jukebox, vintage telephone booth, manual cash register and plenty of classic art and adverts from the 40's on the walls. There's plenty of booth seating as well as a counter-and-barstool area. The ordering process is kinda particular: you go to the register first, order all your dogs, then drinks, then chips. Payment is with cash or check - but no credit cards. The menu pretty much consists of various dogs and chips with various Pepsi products to drink, so make sure no one in your group wants anything different. The dogs, however, are amazing! So glad they are not the gristle-laden all-beef variety, but more like the tender, pork types you get at the ballpark. They're perfectly cooked with soft buns and ample toppings. My favorites include the kraut dog and cheddar dogs. The chili is messy, but very tasty. My only complaint is that the cheddar shreds are just dumped on cold if you don't get the chili to go along with. Still, the dogs are very enjoyable and I try to rein it in when I visit, but I'm rarely able to; they just go down so easy! If you're in the mood for some great franks, this remains one of the best places in GR to grab some. read more

The restaurant is grody, there are stains everywhere, just look. The service is as good as everything else. Employees that are indifferent to a customer's arrival, coupled with tasteless mush called a hot dog-- what's there to love? IMO it's definitely subpar. Yes the Retro look is cool and yes the decorations are fun, but the hot dogs are terrible! Skinny boiled tasteless hot dogs-- what's amazing about that? As a rule, sauerkraut and pickles tend to be items that are full of flavor but these two toppings were also flavorless. Iconic Grand Rapids establishment in the funky long standing neighborhood of Eastown. The hot dogs are great-boiled the way ball park dogs are. Then the toppings are piled on to create a delicious oozy tower. Once you pick your hot dog you literally can't out it down because doing so would create too much mess. I usually get two yesterdogs but the chedder dogs are amazing as well. The ordering process is half the experiance here. Just listen to the guys behind the counter and stand where they need you to stand and order when they tell you to order. They have a method to the maddness, I swear. I came into yester-dog yester-day with $30 in my hand. They were nice enough to do the math for me on how many dogs I could walk out with for this amount. Very small entry space with a lot of seating in the back. Choose between ultra, cheese and veggie and they pile high the ingredients stuffed into each dog before rolling it up in a bit of plastic and putting them in a paper bag for you. 1 dog requires at least 5 napkins while eating it. I'll admit, they are tasty, but it's a sloppy and soggy experience. One tip: Billy's next door doesn't serve food, so you can bring your yesterdogs in to drink with your beers. read more

Yesterdog is and has what most businesses lack - a passionate following, a fierce localness, and a unique product. The hotdog was not much better in the flavor department. Staff was efficient but the food was just very underwhelming. I had to go somewhere else to eat after I left. Every time I go home, I go to Yesterdog. This is the kind of no-frills delicious American food experience that bonds people together for life. If I could ship these out to California I would. I've looked into it. The dogs are what they are, simple and good - nothing fancy. The toppings and squishy buns are where the magic happens. Classic cheddar cheese, freshly shredded pickles, ketchup and mustard, are all lightly warmed to perfection. What more could you ask for? If you're a vegetarian, order the Veggie and you'll be equally happy. What's not to love about this establishment. From the way you order your Yesterdog to the way you try to finish the last bite of the your 4th ultra dog, it's a great food experience. Looking at the photos of Yesterdog t-shirts at famous locations and with familiar places is always a great way to kill the time while waiting for your order. The 20's to 40's decor is like eating in a museum exhibit and the subtle "hippy" vibe is a fun twist to eating at the East Town establishment. I live in CA where art of cooking a great hot dog hasn't been mastered yet. As a result, whenever I travel back to MI visit my family in Grand Rapids, the first place I eat is Yesterdog. My mom cooks a great meal, but nobody can beat the taste of a Yesterdog. The chili sauce isn't thick like most hot dog establishments choose to make their chili, the pickles are thinly sliced just like the onions, the cheese comes from Gordon Foods service and tastes great with the chili, mustard, onions and pickles on the ultra dog. I can't speak to the rest of the hot dogs on the menu since I've only ordered ultra dogs. However, my family and friends have always enjoyed the other hot dogs, including the "Timber Dog", which doesn't include the beef frank. read more

I go to Grand Rapids once a year for Michigan Brewers' Guild's Winter Beer Festival and have made Yesterdog a regular stop each year. WOW! Such a seemingly simple thing as a boiled hot dog, but add some great simple chili, some thinly-shredded cheese, a line of mustard and a perfectly-steamed bun and I've gone to heaven without leaving West Michigan! Didn't realize how good these dogs were until I found myself absolutely craving them back in Chicago weeks later. A completely different animal than my beloved Chicago dog, but a beautiful thing in its own right. Keep it up, gents! Great place to take people for a cheap lunch/dinner. It's a classic Grand Rapids dive, the vibe is very old and classic with road signs on the walls, juke box and an old cash register. I wouldn't say the place is über clean or that the food is top notch. But in my opinion this is the best chili dog that you'll find in all of West Michigan. Bottom line, this place is a dump. Always has been. The dogs are cheap around $2, they are assembly line made saturated in chili. I was only there late at night after a concert, so the drunken crowd, me included was hungry. Now even though I had been drinking, I know a good hot dog when I taste one. This is not one. The best dogs EVER!! I was just newly introduced to Yesterdog and am so glad that I was. The place is great and has an old soda fountain shop type feel to it. There are tables and booths and everything around you has names carved in it, written on it, etc and is encouraged. There are great photos all around of all of the people that have been there and great pictures of people wearing Yesterdog shirts in different areas (LOVE the ones with the troops!!!!) The dogs are amazing...but hey, you probably already knew that. This is a MUST do in GR!!! TIP#1: BRING CASH!! They do not accept credit cards...CASH ONLY!!!
