Finally got a spot at this super chill restaurant in Othello. Took a couple times to get in because…read morethe other times the chef said she was cooking for a wedding. Not a bad idea to call ahead of time, but no reservations needed or possible. We went on a Saturday night and my boyfriend spontaneously ordered some meat and veggie with injera...it was absolutely delicious! We weren't really sure what to expect, however, because they didn't have any menus. They did have a sick Eritrean music video lineup though. The lighting was reddish and the place had a nice ambiance with local Eritreans drinking beer in the back outside the restaurant. If you like a little adventure, you will not be disappointed by Momona (misspelled on Yelp). It's also the only Eritrean restaurant in Seattle, according to its staff.

My second visit was a COLOSSAL disappointment. I discovered Momona Cafe & Restaraunt last year at…read morethe Plate of Nations and was HUGELY impressed by the service, the amazing Ethiopian food, and the amount of food being served at a remarkably inexpensive price. The owner was quite happy to explain the dishes and was just a delight to chat with. She made the visit to Momona my favorite stop on the Plate of Nations list. My second visit was anything but impressive. Flies buzzing in numbers, they had to be fended off while dining, service had to be prompted numerous times to action to perform basic common tasks, couldn't answer any questions, serving dishes were dirty, the restaurant appeared to be very poorly kept both inside and out. The server didnt know how to ring me up: i was charged 2 additional times on my credit card & ultimately had to pay cash (now I have to come back to the restaurant to resolve their billing mistake). TRULY disappointed! I was hoping to make visits to Momona a regular periodic occurrence. Overall score: 2.5 / 5.0

It's hard for me to compare Ethiopian restaurants here just yet since the cuisine isn't something I have to often still, but it's definitely been quite good the time I've had it. This is no exception either. The platter was quite large and I enjoyed almost every thing on it. I don't know the names of everything still, so sorry for my ignorance, but both the meat and veggie items on the platter were very good. There's nothing special about the egg, but for some reason, it hits different with that sauce here. So freaking good! Service was friendly, but the place was pretty dark and dreary. Definitely has more of a night scene vibe or just a dive bar kinda vibe. There is a bar attached in another room close to the back. So maybe it use to be a bar and the design of the place just hasn't changed. The restaurant did feel very wide and spacious. Possibly for a dance floor or something. Anyways I had a good time and food was delicious.

Veggie combo (4 stars): There were at least six delicious sides to the injera. The lentils were fresh and delicious. Loved the authentic food. I wish they let us replace a few veggie options with meat options.

We went…read morein on a Saturday dinner and there were only 2 tables occupied, which is surprising given the great quality of food and service this place offers. We shared #18 lamb combo which was $24.95 as well as a glass of Ethiopian wine ($8) and a Harar beer (Ethiopian beer) ($6). Wow, what a great deal, as the lamb combo was enough to feed 2 people and still ended up with some leftovers. They give a good amount of injera, just the perfect amount. The lamb is decent - it was a little bit tough but we thoroughly enjoyed the vegetable portion of the dish mostly. I probably will try beef next time. The Ethiopian wine has a little bit of sparkling aspect to it, and the Ethiopian beer was pretty good - I'm not a beer person but I liked it. Service is friendly and approachable and they were appreciative of our visit. They went a bit above and beyond in making sure we maximized our experience in our meal by showing us some ways to enjoy the injera more. This is not the best Ethiopian food, however, but the culmination of the food, service, and price make this a deserving 5 star restaurant.

It might be the location, but honestly the food deserves way more customers, everything was fantastic. We ordered the Meat Combo, which came with Kitfo and Ayeb, Key Wot, Alicha Wot, and Gomen Besiga. The Kitfo, an Ethiopian-style steak tartare seasoned with coriander, mitmita (hot chili powder), and herbed butter, was incredibly flavorful. Most of the meats leaned on the spicy side, but when you mixed them with the veggies and injera, everything balanced out perfectly. My favorite was the Key Wot, a spicy stew of slow-cooked beef with onions, garlic, cardamom (korerima), berbere, and Ethiopian herbal butter. My second favorite was the Gomen Besiga, made with boiled beef cubes flavored with spices, onions, and garlic. The texture was surprisingly tender, almost like fish. We also got the House Combo, which includes a mix of meats and vegetables. It only comes with two meats, but it's a great option for first-timers because you get to try a wider variety of flavors. The waitress was very helpful and thoughtful, taking the time to explain each dish to us. And bonus, they have some parking available, which is super convenient. Overall, the food was amazing, and I really hope more people discover this local gem.

Be ware of parking, its just bad with only 1 or 2 spots out front. Which means your gonna have to walk about 1 to 2 blocks. When you get there you might walk right past it and end uo snooping around the club next door like it did. When you do find it, you feel like Harry Potter did when he found that hidden alley. No complaints about the veggie combo, but the meat combo only has two types of meat and is otherwise all veggie/lentil. You'll get better value and variety at other spots for the same price. I liked the sour injera, but it somehow wasn't edible on it's own, and I usually really like it as is. I'd go back if someone else suggested it, but I won't be choosing it as my #1 Ethiopian pick.
