The front desk employee's are friendly and helpful. Our grandsons have a great time playing basketball here and swimming. My wife and I love to walk around the track and we also had a great trainer for a couple months. She helped us get use to the equipment and taught us how to use everything correctly in order to prevent injury. The value for her services was on target with other trainers in the area. The first YMCA was started in London by George Williams in 1844, to put Christian principles into practice by developing a healthy "body, mind, and spirit." My favorite YMCA, the Yakima YMCA, still embodies these principles. There is a chapel with a large ornate Bible in it down the hall from the main lobby, and there are many members willing to witness their faith such as Skip Schoff. The legendary membership director Joe Carson came and spoke at my brother's funeral, and current Executive Director Bob Romero takes part in interfaith prayer breakfasts and meetings. This Y also has church basketball leagues. I came here for the swimming when I was a little boy and learned to swim here. They really stress water safety, and taught me all of the basic strokes I needed to enjoy an aquatics workout. Their lifeguards throughout the years have been REAL lifeguards, supervising lanes and making sure the slower swimmers stay out of the fast lanes, and keeping a close eye on kids that are getting out of hand. The ability of this facility to organize programs such as Camp Dudley for kids throughout my years here has been fantastic, and there is a constant supply of outside people who are part-time teachers who have supplied a rich variety of swimming, aerobics, cross-fit and martial arts classes. This was also the only facility I have been in which trained and certified members before we were allowed to use the once-popular Nautilus equipment, and I have enjoyed that and similar equipment over the years. As Yakima has aged, and businesses have left the downtown core where this is located, there is more off-street parking, but the neighborhood around the building is getting rougher every year. Many members have moved on to higher-class facilities or better neighborhoods, and this facility has a lot of people now who are on financial assistance. Consequently, the financial base of the YMCA is always challenged to keep it funded with enough money to keep the old building repaired, and from time to time there have been moments where I was unhappy with the rusting lockers, worn floors, cold corridors, and leaky plumbing. My prayer for this organization is that they will get the support of the community to build their new aquatics center at Chesterly Park, as our original pool is too small for the population that needs the pool, and my main reason for being at the Y instead of a strip-mall fitness center is the pool. Yes, it has been challenging for me in recent years to find a lap lane to myself as often as I used to when I was a little boy. Let's get that new pool going! read more

Long review... but it's what happened. Unfortunately. My friend and I signed us and our under 2 years kids up for the Parent and Child swim class. We signed up a couple of months in advance online so we would be prepared and could pay/plan our schedules ahead of time. Classes were the month of July through the first week in August at 10:30am. We got confirmation emails with the dates, times and everything. So finally, here comes the day we have our first class and I get a phone call early in the morning. I didn't recognize the number so I let it go to voicemail. I listen to voicemail and it is the instructor of the class informing me that classes for that day have been cancelled due to poor air quality. The air conditioner had broken. So I immediately text my friend and say how much that sucks.. also expecting that she had gotten a phone call. Nope. Nothing. That was my first Red Flag. Then the second class comes around.. my friends child is sick. So my child and I go to that class on our own. I show up at 10:20 (mind you, this is my first time ever being to the YMCA and having any sort of class there.. So I had no clue where to go), go where I think I should be. I make my way through the locker rooms to get to the pool and sit on the benches there waiting to be addressed at some point since I know I look confused and am waiting to ask questions. A class is finishing up, so I wait patiently for that one to be over. When it's finally over, the instructor walks right past me. No eye contact, no smile, no hello. She eventually makes her way back in my direction and I ask her if this is where the Parent and Child swim class is. She tells me, very rudely, "That class was at 9:30." I tell her that my confirmation email and the website says its at 10:30. She then goes on to tell me, and this is all while I am chasing after her because she is so uninterestedly walking away from me trying to leave her shift, that the front desk people are really bad with communication. No apology, no Let me help you make this better. Wow. I am stunned. I also tell her that my friend didn't get a call about the first class being cancelled... I knew this was the instructor that called as I had heard her name being said by someone while I was waiting. She asked me what my friends name is. She thought for a second and went on to tell me, "Oh yeah, I remember calling her. Maybe her phone was off?" I later call my friend and see if maybe that was the case. Her phone had been on that whole day. She had no voicemails, no missed calls or anything. So after being super disappointed that we missed our first official class, I go to the front desk, which no one helped me find, to talk to someone about how this happened. I talk to the front desk person who was no help At All. I tell her exactly what happened. She assumed that I had run late to the class. Like it was my fault. I told her again, No, I missed the class because the time I was told on my class confirmation email and on the website was wrong. She then tells me that they typically don't do refunds but can do vouchers for another class. She tells me I have to talk to the pool manager. "Is he in?" She tells me No. I ask when he usually is in. She says he isn't in the office often and insists on giving me his card to call him. That helps me how? So I leave super frustrated. I call him while in my car with my child as I have to wait in town now because my daughter had a doctor appointment. If the class would have been when the website and my email said it was, then I wouldn't have been wasting my time. I call this pool manager and leave a message. He later gives me a call back and to my Complete Surprise, he is very pleasant and does his best to help me. He tells me myself and my friend can simply get our money back for the two classes we missed rather than getting vouchers. He also informed me that my friend had been placed in the wrong roster for classes and that is why she didn't get a phone call about the cancelled class. They was an admin error on their part. He apologized and was super nice. So this swim instructor had lied about being sure she called my friend. At this point, I wasn't surprised. Just disappointed. The swim manager said we should be getting the checks in a few weeks. It's been a month now since classes even started and still, no checks... Now come the actual classes. SUPER DISAPPOINTING. I will save some time and just list the numerous things that went wrong: - Our instructor was not a good teacher. At all. We simply sang songs. You could very much tell that this instructor was just doing her job. - One of the days, everyone was late to class except my child and myself, as we were always early. This instructor decided to wait for more people. Which resulted in a 20 minute "class" instead of the 30 minutes I was paying for. ... Can't beat the monthly price for family. The work out equipment is absolutely fine, the TV's are great. I go mostly in the winter, but like to swim laps from time to time. We had a birthday party scheduled here and after scheduling a month early and after numerous phone calls to this place they still had it wrong! We were really disappointed how we were "misinformed" by every single person and every conversation we had with the staff. First they told us we would have an hour private in the youth room which is NOT private. Then I told the staff that we were going to use the slide and pay the extra $30 but when it was swim time they had it out but not blown up. When we asked them why it wasn't setup they looked confused and said did you tell them you wanted the slide? Uhhhhhh yeah like 3-4 times we said that and thought we had already paid for it. The gentleman did go and talk to the front desk and wnded up blowing it up 15 minutes into the 1 hour of swimtime. It was unfair that we had to pay for the full use of the slide when it was their messup that they did not have it setup and that was the one thing the kids were looking forward to the most. They need to properly communicate the way the party works to the customer instead of trying to "figure out the details" when 40 people are waiting to swim and its cutting into our time. Communication and making notes in your system when we tell you we want the slide would of cleared up all their questions and blank stares when we got there. I am super upset and let down by this place. If you do have a party here just make sure you go in face to face and make sure they understand and NOTE what you want instead of having 3 5-10 min conversations with the staff and wasting your childs party time andyour attention on fixing their mistakes rather then giving your full attention to your child and his day. read more
