I really like this gym. I joined because I need a gym close to my house/work and this place is a 5 minute drive/ 15-20 minute walk form my house. There is a variety in cardiovascular equipment: treadmills, different types of bicycles, and at least 3 models of elliptical machines as well as step/ climbers. The YMCA has a large weight room (within the cardio room) including not only free-hand weights but also weight lifting machines. The North shore Y also has a pool, and two gymnasiums including aerobics classes throughout the day. What is also good about this place is if you have a young child or are babysitting a and need to go work out, there are babysitting services here as well. Included with your membership are 6 free guest passes for members to bring friends/ family. 4.5 stars. Minus the half star because its expensive but if I am spending these rates on a gym membership I will not let it go to waste! read more

Recently visited as a guest, I forgot my id at home as didnt plan on coming here with a friend, so I had to wait for someone to bring my wallet. Wallet got here at 4:03, guest sign in's ended at 4:00. Rather than be pleasant and make an exception since I had arrived at 3:30, Doug (heavyset guy with glasses) didn't want to do any work. He simply said he can't work the other computer and there's nothing he can do. He offered to show me the policy, file a complaint, basically anything but customer service. Finally Dierdre offered to help and make an exception. (Doug is the supervisor, I came to find out.) It took some but she was perfectly pleasant. As I left the gym, I caught Doug sitting using the computer he claimed he was "unable" to use. read more

I too am a fan of this Y. I've been coming for the last year, and I find it to be a positive, family-oriented place. Besides all of weight and cardio machines, the fitness classes and the pool, they have many programs for children and seniors. The staff is friendly. You pay $50 a month for an individual membership, and a bit more for a couple or family membership ($85ish). Also, depending on you, or your spouse's, profession/affiliations, you may qualify for a discount. With your membership you are given (3) personal training sessions with one of their staff. Should you choose to take advantage of these, they may help you get familiar with the machines or setup a workout plan. You also can join most of the fitness classes at no cost. One of the pushing factors for me joining was that with your membership, they will take care of your children while you work out for up to 90 minutes. This gives moms the chance to get a good workout or swim, and then take a shower or spend a couple minutes in the sauna. The baby sitting hours are 8:30am to 1pm and the evening hours are 5-8:30pm. They start taking care of babies at 6 months. They will feed them if you bring something, but they will not change any diapers. If your child needs a change, or cries excessively, they will come and find you wherever you are in the gym. My only criticism is that the only changing table at this YMCA is in the ladies locker room, but they don't allow strollers in there. This makes it difficult for moms of small babies, especially if they have more than one child, but everyone ends up taking their strollers in anyway. So I guess its a non-issue. read more

I've grown up using this facility for things like teen nights, tae kwon doe, learning to swim, fun runs, pee wee basketball, their fitness center, and even pre-k. I'm quite happy with them historically and they keep striving to improve themselves, in appearance, service, etc. It's a good example to set for its members. read more

I think that is unfair to their members having such a small pool, not able to swim whenever you want but when is available, which might be couple of hours during the day. Also their parking lot is really small, dont be surprised waiting another twenty minutes until you find available parking spot. read more

I love this gym! I love the fact that it has Child Watch that my daughters enjoys. She loves the gym so much she encourages me to go even when I do not feel like it! I love the classes especially Wednesday night spin with Tee and Thursday night Soca. The sauna and pool are also a great addition since it soothes the soreness from a hard workout. The staff are generally friendly and the patrons embrace you and encourage you to keep up with your fitness goals. Overall great place to work out if you are into a judgement free zone that is kid friendly. read more

The instructors are all motivating and good people. The gym equipment is also pretty well kept and so is the facility. Go somewhere else, what a bunch of incompetent/rude people working there. The Y has become such a bureaucracy it barely functions, if you have to call them get ready for hours of being transferred around. The hours constantly change, rude employees and a lack of over site but what else would you expect in Staten Island. My company will be cancelling our corporate account with the Y. General swim pools hours are at 10pm.. who swims that late? And why is only 1HR out of 24 used for general swim?? but if you call them and actually get someone (rare) they try and say the swim hrs are from 6am to 10 pm. I tried the corporate office and got a bunch of vmails, still waiting on call backs. The Y's problem seems to be systemic from the top. Time for new board members!!! read more

Summer camp for young kids is terrible. I registered my 3 year old for their summer day camp, and I started to regret since Day 2. When things get accumulated, I decided to switch her to another place, even I was told NO REFUND for deposit ($200) for the following month (but I was told YES when I sign up for the camp). Many things make me uncomfortable about putting my kid here: 1. the doors to access to kid classroom and area are not locked/secured. One day, I entered the classroom with my kid, and nobody come to me for at least a minute (a stranger could enter the classroom like I did, which is terrible). They don't care about the sign in/out sheet even everyone suppose to do so. 2. No matter when I dropped by, never see interaction between teachers and kids (no dancing, gaming, teaching, etc). Every time when I enter the room, all the kids just play by themselves. If you expect that you kid will learn something here as I did, you will be really disappointed. No academic at all!. 3. When I think of YMCA, I thought they would do a good job for the sports or games. This is also my reason to spend $1300/month in this day camp. In fact, the only activity that I saw is water splash time every noon to drag the kids go outside half an hour when temperature was over 90. I am speechless. 4. Teacher could handle kids in tough way, and you don't want to find out their names. I got a feeling that nobody care about your kid in this day camp. I feel bad to my kid. read more

I love the Y in general. I worked for the Greater Syracuse facility during college and have enjoyed the services offered at various locations all my life. The Broadway Staten Island location is clean, expensive and uptodate. My husband and I have the Family II membership which is 87 dollars a month. It includes the both of us and someday when we have a family they can also be included in this membership. There are several gymnasiums, a large pool, a (in my opinion ) state of the art workout center as well as tons of classes offered. The machines are awesome. Large LCD displays that offer tv, games like solitaire and connections to apps such as lose it and fitlinxx. With your Y membership fitlinxx is included. It can remember your settings on the machines and also logs your workouts and progress. I love technology so appreciate a gym being updated. I also enjoy the scenes that you can display on the cardio machines. It may be cheesy but I run better when I follow one of their digital courses, it's nice to run on "the beach" or a mountain trail. It makes it a little less boring and a nice way to work out first thing in the am. I am pleased with our membership and think it's totally worth the money (our insurance will reimburse us at the end of the year, heck with yours!). Parking has never been an issue, large lot that goes far back. Bus stop right out front. read more

I love the YMCA. It's been great with my weight-loss plan and maintaining weight. The elliptical, rowing machine, bikes, are all fun. I love the new screens that take you on hikes, ride, or climbs around various ranges in the world. It really breaks up the repetition of the workouts and challenges you in different ways. I'm happy to hear the fitness area is getting a new floor, as it looks very dated. I love the Zumba class and am happy to say I LOVE the Ballet N Tone classes. Christina is a sweetheart and the class is such a challenge. The parking is a BIG issue with this facility. There's not enough parking and when swimming, Zumba and the fitness room are running at the same time quickly followed by karate or kid's classes, there's nowhere to park. The streets become overwhelmed as well. The neighbors cannot be happy about this at all. I almost feel registration should be frozen for a while with a constant stream of new members eventually it's going to become an unpleasant place to workout or enjoy a class. I've never had any issue with a staff member. They all appear friendly and helpful. read more

I'm canceling my membership. I find the adult classes are extremely variable in quality and are pretty mediocre overall. My motivation was getting back to weight training and Zumba. Unfortunately, half of the Zumba instructors have poor technique and lack the energy to give their members a good workout; others are excellent and can easily give tips for improvement. When I gave this feedback to the management their only response was that these folks were certified (which anyone can get if they pay about $250 to attend a single certification class). read more

After repairs, the women now have more than 3 showers and as the weather becomes warmer, the hairdryers have returned to the women's locker room. The sauna now functions too. Classes are great and plentiful. Instructors are great too. Pool hours are limited, so if it's lap-swimming you're looking for, there may be more hospitable options. Parking is poor and at times impossible. Love the folks there, but the spirit of hospitality is evaporating. Information isn't uniform, so do not expect that the pool class is being held, despite it's presence on the schedule and you're being told on the phone that the class is on. Don't believe the app either, which is supposed to supply facility updates and class schedules that are correct--often they are not. A new tv in the women's room obliterates conversation and any sense of community. Instead, we listen (or watch) to soap operas and baby daddy type programing, presumably stuff women like? I know the men's room has 2 saunas and that the Y's outlook is clearly male oriented. They even have to clear the women's locker room when a lightbulb is changed! (It's TRUE, not a joke). So, A-OK it is for the Broadway Y. I love you less, but still can't quit ya- read more
