The teacher I have right now is one of the best teachers I've had. This school has a very big upstairs area including a very big grass field, volleyball area, playground, handball, and basketball court. I kind of wish that there was an actual net for the volleyball court, but overall it's pretty big. I personally think that not all the restrooms are clean especially the one's without mirrors. This school goes from TK-8 so your children don't have to transition to different schools. I also recommend this school to people. Like other reviewers have mentioned, not all teachers are great (there have been a few that are terrible!) but there are also some of the best teachers who are superb role models and wonderful educators. Since week one of Kindergarten, there had always been an excessive amount of hw given each year except for 1st grade. Part of the success and high test scores of the students, I feel, is from the hw that is given. But sadly, a large portion of family life is sacrificed because of it. Def can be too much stress on the student and parents. Nonetheless, my daughters growth and work ethic has developed to a high level because of Brightwood. She is well prepared for high school, and even college!! All in all, I feel she will continue to thrive because of this school.

We had a choice to make whether we wanted to continue on, meaning a much longer commute and many more hours each day away from our little ones so they could attend the other campus in Monterey park. We made the right decision to stay with Meher. The school went above an beyond to wrap around its impacted families during this crisis. When we were displaced we were even invited into a zoom class room so the kids could stay connected to their classmates. They did not fall behind, and had a loving environment to return to when we came home. We trust their approach to normal misbehavior and conflict between kids, and the kids trust that when they are there their needs are met. The structure is comforting for them and the lessons engaging. We love that the school has a loving and professional approach to child development. We feel there is a real investment in our kids learning how to do things on their own, which we have noticed contributes to their confidence and eagerness to discover and learn. The teaching staff is well versed and continuously learning how to be great teachers. It is not "childcare" it is truly school in a way that sets the kids up for confidence and success. We feel lucky to be part of this community and after looking at other options, are clear this is the right place for our little ones.

What I can say about this school is that the staff, faculty, and principal are always personable and a pleasure to work with. The facilities seem to be well taken care of. They have a dedicated music room and large library room. In the 2014-2015 school year, three teachers won for the Halloween costume contest and were promised a pizza party for their class. However, that promise was never fulfilled. There were more promises that were never fulfilled. For example, in 2013, she announced that if the students behaved well, there would be a small celebration on the last Friday of every month. I'd say that our behavior was alright, but it only happened once, and during that one time, everybody had to stand outside in the stifling heat for a long time and listen to her blah blahs and a DJ that was probably paid so much for doing literally nothing. That event was more for the little kids, though. Also, Ramona Elementary's traditional Mustang Salad Bowl event perished as the new principal came into power two years ago. I don't know if this is just a coincidence that it ended when she came to this school or she just decided to cut off the promotion that encourages kids to eat healthy and exercise often. Also, the principal wasted about $40,000 for an artist to come to the school to let us draw on cardboard boxes, teach us how to draw an elephant, and let us use Playdoh to sculpt ourselves as a baby. We could've used that money for more appetizing cafeteria food, new playground equipment, more exciting field trips, etc. Adding to, the principal scheduled many assemblies that diminished class time, which some teachers did not like. During March or April of 2015, there was a situation where a student almost broke a teacher's printer with a sheet of notebook paper and scraps of paper. Unfortunately, the culprit would not admit to their deed. The teachers and the principal threatened to take away the eighth graders' promotion activities. However, no one would confess. Afterwards, they tried to use a scare tactic of contacting the police and threatening to fingerprint the students. However, a student announced to his peers that they cannot fingerprint the students without permission from parents. And here's the thing: the teachers and the principal knew that. The "mature" adults were boosting the idea of dishonesty. The construction of a new playground was finally finished in 2014. Unfortunately, the upper graders were not allowed on it whatsoever supposedly because, one student quoted, "we're too big and fat." That rule caused an uproar for equality, especially from the eighth graders. After a while, the upper graders earned the right to go on only the swings. Nearing the end of the 2014-2015 school year, the rest of the playground that was restricted to the older ones was scarce of kids. The supervisors were still given orders to not let us up the playful apparatus. There are many more issues that this school (mainly the principal) has to resolve. The principal was promoting broken promises, throwing money down the drain, lies, not sharing, etc. The principal wasn't promoting eating healthy, exercising more often, or primary education.

I attended Macy when it was called Grandview. Mr. Macy was our principal. He was a good man, very…read morededicated and well respected. I use to help him with the outside platform for our Friday assemblies. I remember he even took a group of us to a basketball game and he paid for everything. Back then they gave the boys swats for misbehaving. He had a huge wooden paddle hanging on the wall behind his desk. It was almost like a trophy. When he died it was a sad time for the school. They even had a small plaque placed at southeast end of the park. It was a vey nice ceremony with students and city officials. That's when they officially changed the school's name to Jack Macy Elementary. They later shortened the name for some reason to Macy Elementary. I recently took my family to the school, so they could see where I attended school. To my surprise the old gate kickball backstop was still there in the field. What really supposed me was the fact that the plaque honoring the Mr Macy had been destroyed and grass was covering where it was. It was obvious the school had not taken any action to replace it, as if the principal was lost in time. I hope the current principal sees this post and looks into it and replaces it. The history of the school should stay alive and not lost with time.
