I ADORE Yoga By Degrees. It has been almost year since I joined and it has changed my life. I have lost 25 pounds, my mood is much better and I have a more positive outlook on life. The teachers are incredible. Every teacher is different and special in their own way which makes it exciting to try out different classes with different teachers. I call them yoga choreographers because they come up with a different sequence each week. The vibe is friendly, inviting, and positive. The staff members go above and beyond...as today I left my keys at the studio and someone came to let me into the studio after it was closed. They were just happy they could help. read more

I recently purchased a Groupon for this location, it was 5 classes for $29. What a deal!! So before I use those I was able to sign up for a free week and check out the classes. When you first walk in it's kind of dark but you get used to it. They have a cute little boutique in the front where you can buy all kinds of Yoga paraphernalia. The girl behind the counter is real sweet and helpful. You can rent a Yoga mat for $2 and a towel for $1. All your belongings can be kept safe in the locker room. You can take the key with you. The instructors really know what they are talking about and try to go through the poses slowly so that the beginner Yogis can keep up. I still don't know half of the pose names but I intend to learn them quickly. If you can't do some of the poses, don't fret, go at your own pace, no one is judging. Well.......they shouldn't be. Now it's called Yoga By Degrees because the degree of the classes vary. They can range anywhere from 85 to 105 degrees. The beginners class is at 85 and there is definitely some sweating involved. Don't sweat it though, ;) at the end of each class, when you're in relaxation mode, the instructor comes around and lays a nice cool lavender scented wash cloth on your forehead. One of the best feelings you'll experience. PLUS you can shower in their nicely accommodating showers, complete with shampoo, conditioner and soap. Complimentary toiletries as well. Yoga by Degrees - Yoga Near Me - Wheaton, Illinois

I took advantage of the free week for new clients when you sign up online. So far, I have taken a vinyasa 1-2 class with Michelle (she's great) and a "mix-it-up 85" class with Mitchell (also great). They have very different styles, and I'm not sure if it's just because the class style was different or what, but I appreciate them both as instructors. I will hopefully try out at least one more class before my free week ends. I love the facilities here...the locker rooms are great (and free to use), the studios are very nice, and everyone has been very nice (both staff and other yoga students). I love that there is music in classes, which varies based on the class and/or instructor (i.e. Michelle had some John Mayer-like music playing, whereas Mitchell had more "yoga"-ish instrumental stuff...I liked them both, but kinda liked the soothing John Mayer. It was different, but I liked that). They offer something for everyone...from beginning basics to classes for those with lots of experience, and from 80-85 degrees (which is basically like being outside in August in Chicago) to 105 degrees (which I'm too scared to try). I'm not a huge yoga person, but I know it's good for me and I really want to be a yogi, so I'm working on it. I usually like to practice on my own so I can go at my own pace (I'm too ADD to hold every pose as long as I should and tend to get bored easily), but it's hard to do hot yoga at home. After my free week is up I'm not sure if I'll be back or not. I love that they offer a student discount on drop in and 10-class passes, and their prices are pretty comparable to other yoga studios. The main hindrance for me is that it's 35 minutes away from my house...and gas is expensive. If they opened up a location in St. Charles/Geneva area, then I'd be more likely to go on my own. read more

I have been coming to YBD for many years now, and as a previous Lululemon employee I've been to a LOT of yoga studios. So, let me tell you a little bit about YBD and why I gave them 5 stars. First, the number of locations that you can pick from with your membership (or class pass) is fantastic. They have four locations: Wheaton, Downers Grove, Western Springs and Elmhurst. All four locations are comparable - they each have two studios, and sizeable locker rooms with shower facilities. Parking is usually easiest in Downers Grove or Elmhurst, though you can always find a couple spots at Western Springs and Wheaton as well. They both share lots with busy grocery stores, so they're usually pretty hopping! Classes range depending upon what you feel like - they offer Restorative, or yin, yoga in an unheated class, but the rest are all heated from 80 to 105 degrees. They also offer a Sculpt class which is a great mix of cardio and weight training along with yoga. Their level 1 and 2 classes are vinyasa flow, and are a fantastic workout! The studios are nice and dark, lit by candles, so very relaxing (and nobody can see you get all sweaty)! And at the end of each class, they bring you a lovely cool peppermint lavender cloth for your face to help you cool down, while you rest in savasana. They have SO many wonderful instructors, which to me is the most important part of yoga! These guys are the reason that I keep coming back, and that I actually can say that I LOVE to exercise! I'm sure if you try YBD you'll find your own favorites, but a few of mine that you can try are Lara, Colleen, Kara, Sarah P., Nadja, Heather, Shawn, Brandon, and Jenny T. They make yoga fun! This place is beyond fabulous. Great instructors, clean studios, and a friendly environment. I had never taken a yoga class before in my life, so I was a tad anxious to try it. After being welcomed and told that I could go at my own pace, I felt a bit more comfortable. After taking the first class, I was hooked. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be and the instructor was willing to answer any questions I had without making me feel like I was asking silly questions. read more

Unlimited classes for one week and full use of their spa like locker room stocked with amenities such as bobbypins, Qtips, lotion, mouthwash. Don't forget to bring your mat, towel, and a frozen beverage! Yoga Sculpt with Julie was just what I was looking for. She provides hands on instruction and soothing visuals. Toning with light weights, some bursts of cardio with mountain climbers, and yoga that made me sore for a couple of days Not too hot (80-85). Each class gets turned up to a certain sweaty range, hence Yoga by Degrees, which is awesome for those just starting out like me! Their two studios are great. Love this place. Love some instructors and some classes. Love the bathroom for post shower and clean up (some places don't have showers eww!!!!). Hate hate hate they have no class maximums so we've been in classes where you get kicked in the face or have your face literally up someone's ass. Yoga by Degrees has changed my perspective of yoga and the benefits of it. I'm very active, I run, kickbox, did crossfit, etc so yoga was never the first thing on my mind when I thought about getting in a good work out. I've tried a class that was a mix of yoga and pilates before and didn't like it. It could be that I did an intense boot camp class right before it, but it was too slow for me and my mind was wandering around 100 mph. However, what intrigued me about Yoga by Degree is the class is done in a hot, hot room! The temperatures of the rooms vary between 80 degrees - 105! Another plus is YBD offers a FREE week of classes, which definitely allows beginners like me to try it out before committing monetary to it. I'm in love, oh so in love! My favorite class has to be Yoga Sculpt! Cardio, weights, sweat, just what I like in a workout! There's always modifications for poses or movements that are too hard and there's no judgement if you decide to stay in a child's pose midway through the class! The class worked everything from legs, arms, core, flexibility, you name it and we probably touched on it. I went to 4 classes during my free week and truly enjoyed it. Now if only they opened a location closer to home like Elmhurst/Lombard area since Wheaton can be a far drive for me. YBD classes also helped me with weight loss. Not drastically, but with that 4 classes I took I feel more zen and cleaner, like I sweated all the dirty/toxic stuff in my body out. I also loss a few pounds which can be mainly water weight, but it still made me feel good. This is definitely a must try! read more

Ohhmmmmm.....(ohm) this is seriously the most beautiful sound at the end of a challenging yoga class with all of the collective voices. Ken- Did you fall straight from yoga heaven?! You are inspirational and create phenomenal yoga imagery. I wanted to lay on my yoga mat and whimper in childs pose during Yoga Sculpt, but you told us that we were all warriors and when we had to run in place and do glut kicks you encouraged us and asked if we could see the finish line just ahead. My arms were so tired from lifting 3lb weights over and over (I promise...I usually am really strong and brave and can lift much more!), but when you explained that what we were doing was "champagne pours" it seemed way more fun! I loved Yoga Sculpt! I also loved Rich's Vinyasa 85 class! I finally understood how to do ujjayi breathing! You explained yoga in a way that made it much easier to do all of the poses. You shared your personal journey and I think that helps students connect to you in a shared love of yoga. Vinyasa 85 was warm, not hot. Loved the 95 degree class for a really sweaty workout! New yogis: wear a yoga sweat band, bring a water bottle, bring a towel...GET READY TO DRIP SWEAT. If you don't know yoga terminology, take the beginner class and learn the basics. Yoga by Degrees...thank you for offering the 1 week free! I wish you had a studio closer to Elmhurst and I wish the drop-in rate was just a little lower. $10 rate for student drop in class would be AWESOME (it is currently $14 for students and $18 for non-students...a little pricey). In any case, I will definitely be dropping back in from time to time or watching for a deal on Groupon! read more

I still love this place. I had purchased a few class packages, but decided to bite the bullet and sign up for the monthly unlimited - and I couldn't be happier with my decision. I never miss Yoga Sculpt with Jen (she rocks!) and my new fave is Restorative Yoga with Lara on Monday nights. It's honestly the best start to my week and I find myself so much more calm and centered afterward. If you're debating about it - just go. I don't have a lot of "favorite" things about the suburbs (I'm still slightly bitter about leaving the city), but YBD is on my list! read more

I wish I'd given in to trying this place sooner! I'm sure these hot yoga classes would've made the polar vortexes much more bearable. So I went to 5 classes during my free trial week and then I bought the Groupon. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get the monthly unlimited after my Groupon is used up. Bonus: they have teacher discounts! The teachers I've encountered are kind and cultivate an environment of acceptance. I especially appreciate Lara and Heather's classes. I love how all the classes end with being treated with a cold peppermint/lavender washcloth on the forehead. It's heavenly! The locker rooms are always clean and the lockers are free. I really love Yoga by Degrees. Previous to buying a Groupon (5 for $29...what an amazing deal) I had only done yoga videos. Class is a completely different experience! I've done one class somewhere else and it simply didn't compare to Yoga by Degrees. I've been going pretty consistently for at least 6 months now. The place is so clean, smells good, so fresh. It can get pretty busy during peek hours but never really uncomfortably so. I love the class times they offer; the 6am gives me just enough time to still make the last commuter train to the city. Admittedly I would love even more options, perhaps more afternoon classes, but I'm not complaining. The teachers have all been great. I like some better than others, but that is just a result of their style not their competency or friendliness. Definitely check this place out. It does wonders for how your body feels!!! Expensive, but if their classes make me work out consistently it is completely worth it. read more

Living downtown and working in the suburbs, to avoid sitting in rush hours traffic I've been trying to find a yoga studio near my office that offers great hot vinyasa classes with flexible schedules. I took a YBD 2 85 at 12pm with Samantha (sub for Bridget), YBD 2/3 85-90 at 6pm with Rich, and YBD 2 95 with JennyT, all three classes were simply amazing. The studio is very clean with plenty of free lockers and shower stalls. I can easily run out during lunch for a 12pm class and able to rinse off quickly before returning to work. I love the size of the classes I've taken, there were plenty of people but never felt overly crowded. I purchased a Groupon for 5 classes and planning on doing the monthly membership. It is a great investment for your health! Namaste. UPDATE: It's been over a month since my original review, I signed up for monthly membership once I used up my Groupon. I've been going 4 days a week and have taken classes with Lara, Rich, and Briget; all three were amazing teachers! read more

It's well-run, the teachers are great, and the staff is super friendly (without that manic brand of positivity that some yogis are afflicted with). In short, it's my kind of place. Although it doesn't compare to the yoga I've had when I lived in Brooklyn, there are some great instructors here who are great for intermediate practice. My favorites are Jenny, Loretta, and Tomek - each one has very individual style. Jenny thoroughly prepares ahead for her class: she gives an inspiring reading prior, during, and at the end of the practice with the right sequence of steps for you to follow. Loretta has a very positive energy and makes her classes fun and challenging at the same time. Tomek pushes your limits and also inspires you with his words throughout the class. The only one instructor that I stay away from is Nadja - I left Lifetime Fitness in Naperville where she taught yoga, because of her. She incorporates "shake it out" and some hip hoppish moves into her practice, her sequences, albeit challenging, do not flow into one another and tend to create disharmony in your practice. And at 105 degrees, the last thing that you need is disharmony. The clothing is overpriced - you can take pictures of the tags and find everything cheaper with discounts online. The washrooms, showers, etc. are VERY nice and clean. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone in the surrounding area. read more

I would not do business with this place. This is what happened to me. I was a member for a while & I auto pay for around 2 years "not sure on the time. I cancelled the subscription & forgot all about it. Then I was getting calls NONE stop from a an attorney for collections. I told him several times I had no bill and asked for a copy of what my charges over and over again. The collections attorney ( from another state} told me to send the request in writing to a POX address, which I did 2 times & they claim they never got it. When I asked the bill collector to give me a mailing address to send my request certified he refused. After leaving several messages at Crunch I never got a call back. I filed a complaint with the BBB and they did not respond to the Better Business Complaint. It's been about a 1 year & now I get a message that says " Looks like you are past due, we can waive late fees if we get you caught up. They are unbelievable 2 other people had the same experience. BBB has had same complaints. As far as the place I went 3 times in two years. At the time the fitness instruction was a freshman from HS talking nursing classes. read more

It seems inevitable to draw parallels between Yoga By Degrees and CorePower Yoga, and not just because the classes offered are similar. Located in a strip mall, this studio has a slighty "corporate" feel, though as far as I know it isn't a franchise (or whatever CorePower's business model is). Of course, this level of professionalism has benefits. The studio is luxurious and absolutely clean. Changerooms have all the amenities and there is such a refreshing attention to detail (the shampoo in the showers smells amazing). There are two hot rooms, which gives you some class options during busy times. I would venture that the different "Degrees" of yoga offered here (there are classes at 85, 95 and 105 degrees, and beginner and level 2-3 classes as well as Yoga Sculpt and Yin) are a tad gratuitous in that I don't think those 10 degree increments in temperature are much more than a gimmick. That said, I have become a regular at Yoga By Degrees because it's such a calm and beautiful environment, the class times are frequent and convenient, and there are some really good teachers here. Loreta in particular is a truly inspiring teacher. Her classes are humourous, playful, challenging, and she engages the class in such a personal and interactive way. She has such a warm and open yogi spirit and radiates beautiful energy. I definitely recommend taking one of her classes as she's one of the best hot Vinyasa teachers in the Chicago area. read more

Took my first yoga class at YBD so glad I did!! First, it was free, part of the free week they offer all new students. Second, the instructor, or is it teacher, Heather was amazing. She took her time as she taught us newbies the basics. She made it easy to follow along, never knew i had an asana. Her understanding of the body works really helped me understand the benefits of yoga. Glad I found Heather and YBD. If you want to give yoga a try - I suggest you stop in YBD Wheaton and give Heather and her intro class a shot. I went there with my sister who has attended one class and wanted me to join her as well. The instructor was really rude and her attitude was out of the world. I am not sure if she was having a rough day or something but she was rude and not nice to us at all. I'm definitely a beginner--only my 3rd time doing yoga--and today I tried Heather's YBD1 class and absolutely loved it! The class was easy to follow along with and a great workout. The studio is very clean! They have free lockers, nice changing rooms, and showers with complimentary shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. I went to Yoga by Degrees with my mother, she and I have not done yoga in years and we were very nervous. In the end we loved the class, bought a Living Social deal and still continue to attend yoga classes! All of the staff here is super friendly and they really create a great atmosphere of the place. It is also really clean here which is a must because people are sweating like crazy! As for the yoga class itself, AMAZING! My mother and I went to our first yoga class after a bad day and we both left happy, felt that we were challenged physically and got our minds into what we were doing! Update: I've been back here when I come home for summer break, and both Kara and Lara are great teachers. Kara has this kind warmth and acceptance about her, and you can tell she loves what she does and everyone in the room. Her voice is also very reassuring. Lara is the same way, and she even takes the time to learn her students' names. You can tell that she really pushes her students past what they think is their limits, to make them better than they were yesterday. Lara is really in tune with what everyone is feeling in the room. I can think of two times when my body was giving out on me, and I wanted to take a break, and she sat down on the floor right next to me and gave the instruction for the next pose and acted it out, like she was mentally carrying me on her back to get me through the roughest part. And even after yoga class in the lobby, she told the other students and me what a good job we did today. Wow. read more

I went here for the intro week offer and I was impressed. One of my favorite instructors teaches here now so it was a treat to be able to go to one of his classes. I did go to a handful of other instructors and I definitely enjoyed a couple of them. I would consider getting a membership if the location was a bit more ideal for me. I started yoga about a year ago and have taken classes at a few different studios now. Yoga by Degrees blows all of these other places away. The studio is relaxing, clean and smells good. The week of free yoga is a great way to experience all of the classes and instructors. While I have enjoyed all of the instructors so far, Grace is pretty phenomenal and her enthusiasm really makes for an awesome yoga experience. I enjoy the fact that the classes are set to music that is not always your typical yoga music. A ++++++ and 5 stars for Yoga by Degrees! read more

I am posting two reviews below for classes taken by different teachers at the same studio. 1. You could tell when Loreta walked in the room because the energy shifted pretty quickly from casual to ready to work. I felt like it was time to start when she made her way into the class. She seemed comfortable in the role of yoga teacher. Loreta began the class talking about her home country of Lithuania and referring to the winning of an Olympic medal for the Lithuanian team. This was a nice touch and made me feel like she was willing to reveal something about herself to me. This drew me in right away and made me feel more comfortable. I was curious about her accent when we first walked into class and this let me know the answer. She had a strong but forgiving presence. This helped me to be strong and push my limits in a gentle way. I haven't done a ton of hot yoga in my life, maybe once or twice before and I recall not liking it. I definitely needed more water than I had anticipated. She did a good job of getting us into the poses and I had no problems understanding where she was guiding us. I didn't feel confused about what we were doing. She spoke clear and with authority and held the energy well in that really hot room. I wondered how I would do as a teacher in these conditions. There were times when it was so hot that I wanted to give up and run out of the room. But I stuck with it, perhaps in part due to her guidance and urging us to continue. It was interesting how I was rendered somewhat helpless by the heat in poses I am normally able to do. I didn't feel judged by the teacher or students because everyone was in their own zone. She was able to keep me going in spite of the extreme heat. I thought about how this heat could be really good for building my nervous system. Something about it makes me want to run away. I have problems in steam rooms sometimes for the very same reason. My mind really plays tricks on me when I am exposed to heat. It almost turns into a panic situation. I stuck with it and she urged us on and it came from a place that was gentle and courageous. The challenge of the heat made me think I wouldn't do it again, but then I thought that when I resist something so much I probably should. Sometimes I resist things that I really need to do. 2. Cassandra Guess what? I did a hot yoga class again, but this one was more like warm yoga. It wasn't a 105 degree class, but it was pretty darn warm. This time I had my two giant bottles of cool water at the ready as well as a nice big towel to absorb the massive amounts of sweat. This time, I was prepared to face the heat. I was at this studio the day before and made an observation of the high prices and suburban environment. I was staying with a friend in the suburbs of Chicago for a day or two before I went into the city. The water bottles were $30, t-shirts $75 emblazoned with "spiritual gangster" and Ganesha on the front. I wondered how co-opting these images and concepts might be disrespectful to the practitioners and cultures from which they come. The really warm yoga class seemed almost like a walk in the park (not really) compared to the super-hot class. Everyone sat around stretching and warming up a little and it seemed like the class should be starting. I think the really warm environment was making me a little anxious. I wondered if the teacher was already in the room so I looked around to see if I could identify her and wasn't successful. Someone then walked up to the humidifier and adjusted it. "Ah ha!" I thought to myself, "this is the teacher". I kept telling myself that the heat wasn't that bad and I didn't need to feel like running out of the room and I could grab the water any time I wanted. She led us through lunge heavy thigh burning sequences which seemed a little less rigorous than the class from the day before. The teacher was grounded and focused but seemed to blend into the room. I almost felt like there wasn't a teacher at times. She mixed in well and I didn't need to look up at her much. I stayed pretty internally focused because of this and didn't look at the people around me. I also had a sense of less pressure to get through the poses and stopped on more than one occasion to have sips of water. Though I knew we'd continue to do lunges I wondered about which variations we'd do next. In this case the lunges all made sense to me and I was able to stick with them. I dislike in class when there doesn't seem to be any reason for doing a pose over and over again. In this case it was clear. As I stated earlier, the teacher blended into the room's environment and held the space nicely. Her energy was caring and receptive. I'd image that her emotional thrust and the temperature of the room helped me to get through hot class better this time. I sensed the people around me were all focused inward and the teacher was guiding us. read more

I'm a newbie, so take this with a grain of salt. I bought a Living Social deal for 5 classes and was pleasantly surprised that they offer a free week of yoga. My friend and I took the Restorative class with Lara and we were amazed/impressed/in awe of how great the class was and how wonderful we felt after. The hour felt like it went by so fast! It was so great to spend some time on myself and really get a good stretch. I was so relaxed after the class, I could not wait to go back. I also took the level 1 class and enjoyed that as well. I liked that the level 1 class was a bit more of a challenge, but both were great. I can't wait to experience the other classes and see what else they have to offer. read more

Yoga by Degrees is a great yoga studio. I tried bikram yoga at another local place and wasn't a fan of how by the numbers the whole class was. The whole series of poses one after the other and no music to accompany the workout just isn't my thing even though I know certain people enjoy it. Here at Yoga by Degrees each class is different and they have music to accompany most classes as well. Plus, I've never gotten chewed out for taking a sip of water during a pose here. Definitely a Bridget Jones moment right there. My favorite is their Yoga Sculpt class because it incorporates weights and really gets my heart rate sky high! There other yoga classes are organized by levels, but most of the classes can me adjusted to your skill set. Don't let the heat dissuade you. It really helps open your muscles up and can do wonderful things for your yoga practice. Thanks for the available discounts for students as well! The only note I have is to have a little more desk help in the evenings.
