If you need the gentle stretching and mindful work offered by an experienced, knowledgeable…read moreteacher, the gentle yoga class offered at the north hills branch on Saturday mornings by Shika Pasria is exactly what you are looking for. Shika focuses on mindful breath and healing yourself through meditation. I am an older woman who is enjoying the experience she is offering. Shika urges you to listen to your body, not her voice! You don't need to be an athlete to benefit enormously from this class.

Review #500 !!! Once…read morefree yoga in Schenley Plaza ended for the summer, I was forced to find somewhere new to do yoga in Pittsburgh. The Plaza had amazing instructors from South Hills Power Flow, and I had really high standards going into my search. I also used to practice at the Bikram studio in Lawrenceville, but I have trouble hydrating enough for Bikram. So I was looking for somewhere that had a variety of instructors to try out, but I am pretty open to any style of yoga. I did a lot of research looking into prices, and I settled on trying out Schoolhouse Yoga. You can get a 12 class pass for $100, or $8.33 per class. I really like the different teachers here, and I like that everyone has a different style. It keeps things fresh. Classrooms are kept at a reasonable temperature and are not particularly warm but not too cold either. I really LOVE Jennifer's class because she is this positive and radiant presence in the classroom, and the world just needs more people like her. She is very informative, and she doesn't physically adjust students. I like being adjusted, but I know that is a sore point for a lot of people. Jennifer does more sun salutations and less balancing, and she does a lot of stretching but doesn't leave you holding anything too long. Her yoga 1 class is great, and her yoga 2 is really intense. I love it! Linda is also super informative, but she has a different style. I love her dedication to core strengthening. She does more balancing than Jen, and she really watches that everyone is doing every posture correctly. She asks first but will also do physical adjustments. I also feel like she does a good job working your entire body. She has a very calming presence, and she is super positive. Her Sunday morning class puts me in a great place for the week. Monique's class I wouldn't really consider to be Yoga 1 but more along the lines of gentle stretching. Monique is really pleasant; her style just didn't work for me. This class wasn't for me, but it would be good for anyone with injuries or people who like meditation. I only have a few complaints. 1. The studio is too small. I don't like feeling crammed in, and it feels that way when there are more than about 15-20 people for a class. 2. While most of the people practicing here are super cool, I have felt some shade being thrown by some of the female students. I do sometimes feel unwelcome in the Sunday morning class with Linda, though, as many of the students try to turn the class into a private yoga session. There are some middle-aged women who have conversations all of class and never shut up. It's really inconsiderate. The instructors, however, are all VERY welcoming, and it's worth suffering through this to have class with Linda. 3. The class times are too limited for anyone who has a busy schedule. Most days classes don't start until 9 and the last class starts at 7:30. A 6:00 or 7:00 AM class would be better than having classes in the middle of the day. Due to some of my frustrations, at the beginning of the New Year, I decided to try I am Yoga up the street. They have the $29 for 30 days intro special. With my student discount, their classes are the same price as Schoolhouse, and they are much more conveniently located. However, I am so hooked on Jen and Linda's classes that I cannot wait for my 30 days at I am Yoga to be up. While that studio is much less crammed with a better schedule, I just love the teachers at Schoolhouse more. Overall, other than a few minor complaints, this place is great!

One of my favorite studios…read more I used to go to the weekly Saturday morning $5 community class - all the teachers were terrific. It was a huge help for me during my student years. I remember really enjoying Lisa's intros and teaching method, but really every teacher I had was helpful, deliberate and knowledgeable in their leading of the class.

I waited awhile to write this review, because I didn't want to be the only person in Pittsburgh who…read moredid not like this yoga studio. Well here goes. I purchased a pass for $35.00 for admission to three classes and only used it on one class and I will not be returning for any additional classes. At the start of the class the instructor asked the class what we would all like to work on. One attendee said "the core" I had read the class description several times online and had signed up for a class called "slow flow" which I took to mean more focus on stretching and slow deliberate movements...boy was I wrong. I felt that for a class called slow flow it was very challenging and I was more tense afterwards then I had been before. Personally I can see more advanced yogies having a great time and really enjoying themselves here, but for me as a beginner I felt totally out of the loop and even felt that I was snapped at for not telling the instructor I was a beginner. This yoga study does not have any showers...which for me as some who catches the bus made for a pretty uncomfortable bus ride home. The studio was very warm and cozy and Yoga Hive is a lovely facility even if it lacks showers. It's just not for me. I need more guided mediation and yoga for stress relief not to build abs. I am pretty sad, will I never be able to find a yoga studio to which I can belong? I have these two additional passes that I am certain have expired by now. I hope every one else enjoys their yoga though.
