Many years ago when YiY was near Wells Fargo on Castro, I regularly went for Restorative and for Yoga Nidra. Yoga Nidra was taught by Mojdeh. I forgot the name of the Restorative teacher who later relocated to SoCal and the studio stopped offering the class. I really liked those classes, but they are not offered anymore. This studio is close to me so I thought I'd give it a try. It's right beside a Wells Fargo and there's ample parking. I started with the new student special which is $50 for 5 classes. I found all the teachers that I've had really nice, helpful and down to earth (not too 'hippy'). It seems like the focus at YIY is Ashtanga as they have a number of morning classes focusing on it and self practice. They also have one pilates class during lunch hour which is great if you're looking for a mid day break. There's complimentary yoga mats, towels and blankets for your use so you don't have to lug around your own if you're feeling lazy (but not lazy enough not to go). :) read more

Moving back to the states from Argentina, I had looked and looked for yoga studios and nothing felt like home until I found Marti. This was my sacred time to focus on myself, my baby and building a community of strong pregnant women. Together, Marti led us through yoga classes that prepared us physically, mentally and emotionally not only for labor and birth, but also life after the baby. I feel very fortunate to have been able to give a 100% natural birth (no meds and most labored at home) to a very healthy baby. My whole self was well prepared for the birthing experience and now after with the baby, I feel so strong! Luckily with all the work from Marti's class, my body recuperated quickly. I breast feed exclusively and have no neck pains nor do my arms get tired rocking my little one to sleep for long periods at a time! I also now have endless movements in my toolkit to do in between feedings and naps that help my body stay healthy. Marty is amazing! I have sampled a lot of different prenatal yoga classes in South Bay and this place is the absolute best. Marty is very knowledgeable and totally goes the extra mile to make you feel comfortable, help form a binding with other yogis and most importantly to have a good time! She recently got a professional musician for the class to help the practice and it certainly did put is in a different zone. Also the bonus is these guys are the best priced in South Bay! It had been 15 years since my previous yoga experience and I was very nervous about getting started again. I went to Vinyasa Flow with Thoa which didn't suit my needs. She didn't do a great job demonstrating the poses which was very difficult for me. The next night I attended Flow for strength with Julianne and it was wonderful. She came up to me right away, asked me my name and my experience. I felt very welcomed. She made a point to ask the whole class whether or not we were comfortable with her making adjustments to our poses throughout our practice. I felt very at ease in her class and will be going back for many more. read more

Terrible Terrible experience!!! Not friendly to new students. I was in a Sunday morning class and because I'm a new student there, I was sitting a corner and hoping just get some idea of what was this class about. The class was very crowded. The instructor asked me to move in the middle of the classroom and I did what he told me to. literally 1 minute later, an employee came to me and asked me to move to the side of the classroom, so I can make room for other people. 5 minutes later, as I was doing yoga and observing the class, the instructor came to me again and asked me to move to the conner?!! If I was in a wrong class then why the schedule says this class is " for all level"? I was in the class for about 20 minutes and all I was doing was moving my yoga mat across the studio for other people. I can't feel any more stupid so I gave up this class. I think they either are not welcoming new students or they are super racist. (considering I was the only Asian in the room and no body else was moving their mat) Another reason why you shouldn't practice yoga in this place is that you can't find a place to complain if anything happened to you. No one answers the phone and there is no alternative contact information. read more

I really like this yoga studio; I've been coming here for years. They offer a healthy selection of classes (ashtanga, vinyasa, iyengar, etc); as well as classes for moms and tots. It's located by the Wells Fargo bank downtown. Parking has never been a problem. It's well-priced and comparable to other yoga studios in the area. All the instructors I've had are marvelous. There's a lovely community spirit and the studio is immaculate and well-appointed. I recommend Mojdeh for Ashtanga, unless you're pretty advanced and want to do the full primary series, in which case I recommend Phillipe's class. I really like Laura for Anusara; she and Kenny give pretty challenging classes (especially their intermediate/advanced weekend class). The studio offers yoga/travel retreats from time to time and has a community board with notices of other yoga-related happenings in the area. Really love this place. From the facilities to the instructors to the rest of the yogi's. The facilities: They really have it down. Honestly this is a big reason I keep coming back. When you walk in they have an area in front separate from the main studio. Here you can get fliers, check shoes, and ask questions. Most studios I've been to you walk right into the main studio, which is very awkward when a session is in progress. I've done that at a few studios and never fails to piss me off. No one wants to hear "come back later." And at YIY I never have. Another great part is as long as you have your cloths you're set. In the back they have changing areas, blankets, towls, bathrooms, water, extra matts, and bags. The instructors take their work very seriously, but not so seriously that they don't have, and more importantly, make sure you have, a great time. Each one has thier own style and some have been known to write papers on thier different specialties. I've taken classes at various times with the various different instructors, and yes I do have my favorites. However, whenever I go I know I'm going to have a great session. The people are great too. There's never been a once when I felt left out or unwelcome by those that go more regularly. More often than not when I've been away for a few weeks they'll remember me when I come back. The only thing I'm not super keen on is the definate spiratual aspect that can take place on some of the instructors classes. But really it lends to the peacefulness so I can't say I'd change it. Over all.. go have a great time... if you're new awesome, if your an expert talk to the instructor. They WILL push you beyond the class level to have you get your best. read more

Whether this is a great studio or not really depends on who your instructor is. Mojdeh is great. Awesome teacher. She is one of those rare yoga teachers who really, seriously, genuinely, interested in the TEACHING of yoga. I've been to too many yoga classes where the instructor just talk to the air and stays in front of the room doing poses, one after another, the WHOLE time, as if whether the students "get it" or not is none of his or her business. Makes you wonder why you don't just watch a yoga tape instead. Mojdeh is different. She is firm, direct, but kind, and is genuinely interested in helping you get into the right poses and movements. Her instructions are super clear. She makes sure you understand her every instructions and she would go around correcting your poses and gently push you further. Not the most advanced-level classes though - Shastri-level yogis, be warned. I go to her beginner-to-intermediate classes, but I know she teaches total beginner/foundation class too, though I've never attended it. With the precision and clarity in her instruction, I'd imagine that that must be a great class for people who are new to yoga. It's Ashtanga yoga, by the way. I like it for its predictability - that predictable, orderly, gradual increase of levels of difficulty, the flow, the guaranteed wonderful result... I've been to Tom's Iyengar class but somehow that Iyengar style feels disconnected and I didn't find him very clear in his instruction. The studio itself: Not as fancy as Avalon. Nor is it as warm and cozy as Yoga of Los Altos. It's simple and plain. I have mixed feelings about the multiple clocks on the wall... The space isn't all that comfy, but still, it works. For me the quality of the instructors matters more - that makes or breaks a studio/ a yoga business. This studio has its own share of mediocre instructors... Not a lot, just a couple... But as long as Mojdeh teaches there, I guess I'd stick to it and go as often as I can. My only complaint: I am not sure how to approach Mysore style of yoga - seems to open to only advanced yogis. So the studio provides lots of beginner's classes, and some slightly-higher-than-beginner / intermediate level classes (Mojdeh's classes), then Mysore. There seems to be no "bridge" to go from Mojdeh to Mysore level. I hope there can be a bridge or "prep" class so that we can take advantage of the Mysore class? I am so happy that I found this place for my prenatal yoga. Marty's class is so much fun and filled with positivity. She takes consideration of individaual mom's needs per their mind and body. More than just a yoga class it's a community for expecting moms. I love the energy Marti spreads around all the moms and she makes pregnancy a fun and divine thing than a scary and tiresome one. Talking about the yoga studio, when I started they were near Mountain View downtown but few weeks later they moved to a new location at 1954 Old Middlefield Way Mountain View which is easy in-n-out from 101 and also a much spacious and a lovely place with sky roof that allows a lot of sunlight which feels great for yoga. The facilities, parking, and billing are first rate. Most of the instructors are about as good as anywhere I've been, too, though I personally do not prefer Ashtanga style. Honestly, the thing that gets me to drive 20+ minutes to go here rather than closer places is their billing system. It may sound like a silly reason, but it's really nice when you can buy 10 classes online with Pay Pal and then you can use those classes at any time with any instructor. You just show up, write your name down, and do some Yoga. Other places that I've been require you to pay individual instructors so you don't have the flexibility to go whenever you want to whoever you want and still get the discounted rate for buying a series. Also, when I'm doing Yoga, it helps me to relax and stay relaxed more when I'm not dealing with money or checks. It's nice to keep that stuff separate. =) They also have a good introductory rate for new people and if you refer a friend you get a class for free. In this area, there are a lot of yoga studios. It's hard to figure out which yoga studios do glorified stretching and which are actual yoga studios. This is one of the few yoga studios in the area that I found that isn't Bikram yoga and is still a real yoga studio. They have Mysore-style Ashtanga classes, so you can go at your own pace and get adjusted when you practice. The instructors are amazing and helpful. Don't be intimidated going to your first Mysore-style class-- lots of the students there are yoga teachers themselves and are crazy flexible/strong. If you're just starting out (or if you just want more instruction), Mojdeh's Ashtanga class is awesome. She is so sweet, patient and is great at helping you improve your practice. I only wish there was an Ashtanga instruction class more often! The one con I see is that it is not inexpensive to take classes at this studio (especially as a college student!)...but I'd say it's on par with most yoga studios in the area. read more

Just discovered this studio and I am very happy with it so far. I particularly love Mojdeh's Ashtanga classes and Tom's Iyengar based classes. I am a yoga teacher and ordinarily tell my students (and myself:)) to stay away from Ashtanga classes. Mojdeh's classes, however, are quite different and can be quite valuable for experienced students who want to learn Ashtanga (I don't recommend Ashtanga for absolute beginners in yoga). She is very skilled and patient and gives great adjustments. Of course, you are responsible for your own health and always need to make sure to stop and ease out of a pose if you feel discomfort and pain. The studio is spacious and well aired, and has all the props you need. Highly recommended. Right now, they have $55 unlimited monthly pass. read more

Tom is amazing. Gruff, blunt, shouts orders at you--and you'll love it. He obviously has a fan club already. (And he does have a sense of humor, which helps a whole lot.) His class is Iyengar-style (not strict Iyengar). The most annoying part of class is when everyone has to walk over to get a chair . . . and then after the posture, everyone has to walk over to put the chair back. Then for the next one, everyone has to walk over to get a blanket . . . etc. Possibly better to just grab one of everything before you start so you don't have to walk back and forth the whole time. This style of yoga is a little disjoint, if you're used to flow-style classes. You do one posture, and stop, and do another, and they're not really related. Tom won't hesitate to correct you, to move your hand or foot to the proper position, or to push you if he knows you can take it. It was my first Iyengar-style class, but I've been practicing other yoga for 3 years. Even though it was his first time seeing me, he figured out what he could get me to work on, to stretch farther, to work harder. He also has the timing down to a science. Even when he's giving corrections to other students in a posture, he's still keeping track of the time, so you don't have to worry that he'll get distracted and hold you in Warrior II for five minutes (well, unless that's his plan). His brochure says he's taught 5,000 classes since 1999--which means 500 classes a year--which is a lot. This is the best yoga studio I've ever been to. It's also the only yoga studio that I've consistently gone to more than four classes to (and for someone like me who discards new interests easily, this is a big deal). I'm reluctant to Yelp about this place for fear that more people will take over my precious mat space! I take the Ashtanga classes with Mojdeh, and she is GREAT! She is perceptive about what you can and can't do and gently comes around to better position your body in more challenging and better aligned poses. If you practice Ashtanga, come to this studio. The studio itself is fairly small and simple. It has a small front area and place to change in the back. I think they offer a new student special that allows you to take 3 classes for $20. They only take cash, so make sure you have it on you (if not there is an ATM, next door). The classes are taught in the traditional Ashtanga tradition, so if you are looking to do either MySore or Primary Series, this is the place to go. My favorite teacher here is Mojedeh, she is amazing. She is very knowledgeable of the practice, gives great adjustments and verbal cues. IF you are beginner or advanced you will love her classes. I have also taken with Phillipe, who has a great spirit and gives a fun Sat class. I have also taken with Beata, who is equally as wonderful. I have not taken the other instructors, but I only assume they are great. Give this studio a shot, it also is very accessible if you don't have a car (Cal-Train and Light Rail). read more

I can't begin to tell you how much I love this yoga studio. I'm a complete beginner to yoga. I tried the beginner package (VERY affordable in the Silicon Valley.) I was hooked after the first class. Mojdeh asks newer students to sit in the middle of the class near her. She gets to know you on a personal level. The class is not intimidating at all and has an intimate feel to it. She is able to get to each individual and work on their personal abilities, strengths and weaknesses even when the class has 30 people in it! They provide mats, towels, blankets, and yoga tools for you to use. They have workshops available throughout the month and are super amazing! I HIGHLY recommend trying it out. The only downside is that there aren't as many classes to choose from but their schedule is pretty similar every week. read more

Saturdays at 12:15 Mojdeh teaches a class with a format that combines activity, alignment, and guided relaxation. It is labeled for beginners and I would bring a beginner to it, but whatever one's level it's a great class. I feel good and always learn something. It's also a great excuse to come to Castro Street on a Saturday. I love this studio. I've been coming from Palo Alto for a few years now, sometimes with my daughters, to take classes with Mojdeh, Tom and Julianne. Came back from another great yoga class this morning. I really like this studio (I've been going there for a year and a half now). It's small and friendly. They have water, tissues, towels, etc. for your comfort and convenience. I sometimes take a foam roller from the back and use it before class. I've enjoyed all of the classes I've tried (all except one with a teacher whose teaching style I didn't like). I love the location -- on Sundays I can go to yoga and then walk to the farmers' market or grab a chai. They have a new student special, so ask for that. It's also cash-only, but that's fine because there are ATMS next door. The Tues. beginner class is $10 drop-in; otherwise classes are $15 drop-in. I'd tried a few other yoga classes at community centers, etc. before and found them intimidating. So, I'm grateful to Yoga Is Youthfulness for helping turn me into a regular yoga practitioner. read more

Just updating here to say that I've now tried all the ashtanga teachers' classes. And love them. For those starting to get into ashtanga, Mojdeh is perfect. For those trying advance beyond navasana in the primary series, try Beata's Friday morning class - she takes you through the full series so you can have a taste and start to work on your supta kurmasana (or whatever ails you!) I love that all the ashtanga led classes offer the option of mysore - though I'm not there in my own practice yet, it's great to have the option to practice mysore in the evenings as well as mornings :) read more

Really enjoyed these classes! Connie is great. There is an older lady that teaches here too and she came back after hip surgery. My friend and I gave each other a look when she came in all, "oh no, old lady yoga" and that experience taught reiterated to me to NEVER judge a book by its cover cuz homegirl was running circles around us and doing things with her limbs that I would never dream of. She apparently learned with the master of ayengar yoga, mr. ayengar himself? Pretty damn impressive. The space is really nice and there is room to do your thing without kicking someone. They correct your poses and help as much as possible. Wish I was motivated to have done more yoga here. read more

By far the best yoga studio I've ever been to. Its friendly,approachable staff and diverse clientele make yoga an experience everyone can enjoy. I started two plus years ago taking off and on ashtanga classes. Realizing I had no clue what I was doing, I went to Julianne rice's beginners class on Wednesdays and I've been hooked ever since. Julianne is a phenomenal teacher, welcoming and genuinely interested in her students' wellbeing. Each class incorporates ashtanga, vinyasa and hatha disciplines and Julianne makes sure people feel challenged and comfortable. I can now go to any yoga class and adapt it to my comfort level- Julianne has provided me with tools to make yoga always a part of life. YiY has been an awesome place to practice. I've been a regular attendee of Marti's prenatal yoga for about ~7months now and I Love it!  The yoga group is really helpful not only from a fitness perspective, but also in terms of the community it provides and the helpful discussions we have about everything :) Each class that Marti does is uniquely designed based on the input from all the students. This to me is the best part as every class provides a very different experience and I also end-up getting attention to the areas I most need. The mantra's Marti preaches throughout the class are so soothing and a pure joy that provide a deep inner connection with the baby. The practice varies from stretching, strength training, back exercises, pelvic floor exercises, breathing techniques pretty much anything you need to get ready for Labor & most importantly it is my peaceful time to bond with the baby. In addition to the yoga class, I was privileged to try out the Rebozo massage that Marti offers for a reasonable price when i was ~34 weeks pregnant and was feeling a lot of tightness around my belly causing a lot of discomfort and sleepless night & it felt so good that I wanted to do the second session right away :) For me in-particular, the massage helped create some extra space for the baby & reduced the tightness. I also think this was a major factor in trying to get my baby positioning right during those last few weeks. The studio itself is very welcoming, neat and clean. They have all the prop's offered that you will need for the class including fresh towels/napkins at no extra charges. The prenatal yoga sessions are also at a convenient time Tue 7:15 - 8:30pm pt and Fri 4:00 - 5:15 pm pt, allowing me to join after work, which is a huge plus. Having tried prenatal yoga at various places for trial sessions, I can vouch YIY & Marti are the best! , so don't waste your time elsewhere :) read more

A true sanctuary! After spending 2 weeks trying various Yoga studios in Mountain View area, I settled on YiY and specifically became a regular at Mojdeh's Friday evening Ashtanga class. Came here for prenatal classes with Marti Foster. 7pm is a great time for a working expecting mom to unwind and reconnect with her little one! These classes helped me so much during my pregnancy to build strength and stay grounded. And the sense of community with other moms in the class was always a plus. Covid was a bummer in the second half of my pregnancy but the virtual classes were great too! I took a hip opening workshop led by Julianne a little over four months ago, it actually was my very first yoga class at a yoga studio. I like Julianne's teaching and the studio very much, I have been coming to YIY regularly since. The studio is tucked in the corner of the same building where the Wells Fargo bank is. The interior is clean and calming due to the beautiful tall trees surrounding the building. The staff are friendly and the place provides essential yoga gadgets (mats, belts, blocks, blankets, towels, etc) you need for yoga practice. I have taken classes with a number of different teachers at the studio, in general the teachers are all good. If you are like me and enjoy not only a good yoga work out but also seek to make progress over time, Julianne is a great teacher to go with. Julianne is friendly, kind, encouraging, clear with her instructions, and she promotes doing ones personal best during practice. She is sensible and respects individual student's practice preferences, during the initial warm-up she skillfully asks students to identify themselves to her if they do not want to be touched when she helps to correct poses. YIY is a true little hidden gem, I highly recommend it. read more

I love the Ashtanga class with Mojdeh. I love her energy! The class is great, it's different each time, so you never get bored. Also she's very attentive to everybody. All levels are welcome. Mojdeh is one of the best Yoga Instructors I ever met. She is so knowledgeable. She cares of every single client in the yoga class. She makes sure that everyone's poses are accurate and there is not any probability to injure any joints/muscles. I absolutely love this place. It's where I fell in love with yoga. I was a beginner when I started a couple years ago, and I never once felt uncomfortable with any teacher or class. It's not a fancy, special multi-studio, intimidating, Bikram-type place - It's just a quaint, 'studio-next-door', which I love. I love how they know my name when I walk in, love how they're understanding if I come in late (Julianne recently extended her 5:45 class to start 15mins earlier, and it's rather difficult to get there by 5:30!), and love how I can be completely anonymous and do my thing in the corner if I want. I cannot say enough about Julianne Rice. Her Hatha flow classes are the perfect mix of centering and physical challenge, and she is great about dealing with mixed levels. She picked up right away that I used to be a dancer and had a hyper-flexible body, and she took the time to help me with my particular body type (as it happens to be similar to hers and what she's dealt with in the past). Being very aware of my body from years in ballet, it was just amazing to have someone 'get' me'. She truly changed my life by sparking a passion for yoga. I highly recommend her! You really can't go wrong with any of the classes at YIY, though. read more

I've been to many different classes now with all different teachers and although they all have different styles, I haven't found anyone I don't like yet. I've been a beginner yogi for about 4 years now. If you had asked me whether i am a beginner or not a year ago (before I discovered YIY) I would have said I'm an intermediate yogi. Now that I've been taking Julian's beginner classes I've realized that my poses were okay and I was not doing them correctly. Julian has taught me the proper way of doing yoga. One of the best yoga studios I've been practicing with. This review is especially regarding the Ashtanga Vinyasa class taught by Mojdeh. Love her! Her training and teaching comes off very natural and authentic. She's a learned and experienced yogi and am fortunate to have found her class. I've yet to go to the Yoga sutras class but can't wait to join them this month. My only regret is I find it expensive but it's in the heart of downtown MTV and on Castro so it's a given. Otherwise..
