Kerry was the instructor and I really enjoyed her class , so much that I booked her class again this past weekend . I was new to Pilates so she was really great the first class since it was only four of us she was able to pay a little more attention to my form etc which was very nice of her . I was impressed with how sore I was the following day , I work out 5-6 times a week with a trainer but this class really focuses on all those hard to reach areas like inner thighs , core . The studio is beautiful and very clean , the staff is warm and welcoming . I travel all the way from the north shore of Long Island to join these classes , that's how much I enjoy them ! I've taken 4 classes from this studio and managed to get 2 teachers twice. I'm primarily a Bikram…read moreyogi, so I was excited to see on the bio page that their instructor "Jimmy" managed the Bikram studio at North Beach in San Francisco; Bikram Choudhury's first yoga studio in the U.S. But twice I tried to attend his class and twice he was substituted by someone who was not a certified Bikram teacher. I don't want to ding the rating of the studio too much on a substitute, but 70% humidity at 105+ degrees was beyond what most students could handle and in both classes, the majority of the students left early. I didn't know what was the normal temp/humidity for the studio, but when more than 3/4 of the class walks out, they're not getting what they're paying for. I stayed in because I'm stubborn, but I really slacked off. Despite it being called a "Bikram" class, the order of the 26 postures was not followed; hopefully the regular instructors follow the script better. The other classes I took was a hot vinyasa class by Bryony. I liked the temperature there much better and even though I did not know all the postures, I was guided through them and corrected when needed. Bryony has a pleasant rhythm and walks around to check on everyone's progress. The studio has a women's and men's restroom with a shower. There are no lockers for your things, so don't bring in anything too valuable (even though this is a very quiet and safe area). Water and liquids are for sale, towels and yoga mats are available for rent, though first timers get a complimentary loaner set. It's a bit hard to find since the studio is at the side of a building, on a main road but in a section where the driver can only enter the lot from one direction.

They are motivating, compassionate and just fun to be around. (Renee and Jacqui are my favorites) The community is also really strong. All of the instructors are phenomenal; especially when I was new to the practice and didn't believe I was capable of touching my toes, Donna and Patty were very positive and encouraging. Jane, who owns the studio, is also a very good instructor and very passionate about the health benefits of yoga. The majority of people who practice at this studio are a bit older than your beatnik hipster twenty-something from Brooklyn (you have to be to afford real estate in Westchester!), and I find most of the women who practice regularly to have their little yoga clique going on. The locker rooms are spacious, with cubbies instead of actual lockers, but there are only two showers. In general, everyone is quick in the shower, so there is never more than a 5 minute wait. The hot room itself is spacious, but classes tend to be full as this is a high-traffic studio. (There's this one guy who's notorious for blocking people so they cannot see themselves in the front mirror and breathing like Darth Vader, which can be irritating.) Bikram Yoga Yorktown has carpeting; apparently the carpet is deep-cleaned regularly, which is further evidenced by the lack of funky smells in the hot room and the studio. On weekdays, there are four or five classes offered per day and on the weekends, three classes are offered. I do wish one of the evening classes was slightly later; for those commuting from Manhattan, it's impossible to make a 7:30pm class after work. The recent addition of one hour "express" classes to the schedule is great for someone who is pressed for time; practicing Bikram regularly can get quite time consuming and having class flexibility (no pun intended) is always an advantage. I also wish this studio was a bit more web-savvy. Especially in these winter months, classes have been cancelled with merely a sign posted on the door of the studio. An email notification or Facebook post would be nice - there have been multiple instances of where I was looking to take the 3pm Saturday class, only to discover it was cancelled and with no way of making the 4pm class in Larchmont on time.

Not for beginners…read more Booked a class for my husband and I, his back is about to go and he's been told Pilates is a good way to strengthen his core. It was the first class for the both of us. The instructor/owner let us know a few times we should have booked private instruction, I thought because of his back. Class was pretty amazing, again our first time so it kicked our butts. We were obviously the beginners of the group but we tried our best to keep up and I don't believe we slowed the class down. I was feeling pretty good afterwards, it's been a while since I "did a workout" and had that nice endorphin rush; I told her we'd def be back, presumably for private sessions. It's just... on the way out I overheard the instructor greeting students for the next class and what she said just made me not want to return. "Have you done Pilates before?" The girls answered yes. "Oh, thank God! I'm dying..." So, yeah. If you know what you're doing and are going for the routine and equipment, it's a lovely space. If you want to go to a class to learn how to do Pilates, it sounds like this is not really the place for that.

I had the pleasure of taking an introductory class at this studio a few weeks ago. I was very…read morenervous going into it, as I had never taken a yoga class before. But I didn't let my self-doubt talk me out of it. Chris and David were incredibly supportive and answered any questions I had prior to class; they set me up with a mat, blocks, and blankets. As the class began, I followed along much better than I anticipated. With Chrissy's help, I was able to do things I didn't even know I was capable of. I felt so good at the end of this class. I intend to go back for more classes as soon as my schedule permits. This studio can accommodate the newest of beginners to those with years of practice. I've been coming to the 7:30 am class twice a week for almost six years. It is the longest…read moresustained time I have stayed with one yoga class. It is an excellent combination of known poses and enough new practices so that one is not bored. The class is welcoming to all ages and no-one makes a point of noticing that us 60 and ups are in the same class with 20-30 year olds which is quite nice.
