I tried something new yesterday, an experience that came highly recommended. It turned out to be…read moresuch a remarkable experience that I think I need to share it. I spent an hour in a tank today. Huh? I stepped into a float tank where I experienced something called "flotation therapy." It's relaxation through sensory deprivation and believe me, it is relaxing. What is a float tank? Think of a shallow bathtub inside a phone booth. The tub is filled with water that is charged with Epsom salts. The salt content makes you buoyant so your body floats easily in ten inches of saltwater. I arrived early for my appointment because it was my first visit. There is paperwork to complete (electronically, welcome to the 21st Century) and I sat in the relaxation room to do so. The spa is a warm and welcoming atmosphere with friendly guides who explain everything you need to know about your service. I entered the therapy room and in a cozy area, I quickly undressed. I stepped into the shower and washed off the daily grind, then carefully stepped into the chamber. It is lit with soft, blue light and relaxing synthesized music plays softly. I switched off the light but since music is a major part of my life, I let it play. (If you prefer, you can shut it off or you can play your own music through your cell phone via cable connection.) The experience of floating in total darkness is weird at first, but it didn't take long before I could feel every muscle relax and let go. I could also clearly hear the music underwater when my ears slipped below the surface. (Optional earplugs are provided and no, my face was never near submersion.) I had no sense of time passing. In the dark, and it is very dark inside the chamber, I felt sensations of movement. The chamber is, of course, small so my fingers, toes and the top of my head sometimes contacted the edge of the tub but I felt a sensation of motion like I was floating in circles. If I had to compare it to something, I would say it felt the way I imagine it would feel to be an astronaut, floating around the International Space Station or a Gemini capsule. My mind was racing for about half of the session but in a good way. Eventually, I felt a sense of peace sweep over me. Others who have experienced floating say they actually fall asleep. I don't remember falling asleep, but I do remember being very relaxed and all sense of time was lost. When the time limit was reached, a white light gently illuminated the chamber, signaling that my time was up. I stepped into the shower and washed off the salt, then quickly dressed and returned to the lobby. For that 75 minutes, the world simply melted away and I was simply floating in space, in my own private universe. Afterward, I was totally relaxed and could understand how a strand of spaghetti feels. I look forward to my next session, too! If you feel like you want to try this unique relaxation therapy, send me a private message and I'll give you the pertinent details. It's a luxury you owe to yourself.

The gym is nice, the indoor/outdoor pools are awesome, and its very clean. I even dropped a kid off at the daycare and she had a good experience. The staff are nice and a few already know my name. I still need to use my free personal training session and massage credit. Excited to try the other locations!

I had such a good morning at the club, worked my shoulder, stumbled into the Pilates reformer area where a really kind trainer got me excited enough to sign up for sessions and her weekly class, then swam about 500 yards. Everything was going perfectly. Then came the locker room. It was quiet, almost empty. I came out of the shower, headed to my locker, and this fully dressed woman was standing there. She said good morning, I said it back. But then she sat down right next to me while I was naked, turned her back, and pulled out her phone. The whole locker room was open, and she picked that spot. I felt exposed and uncomfortable. Once I got dressed, I told her that phones aren't allowed in the locker room. Instead of apologizing, she turned it on me, saying I was "threatened" by her just scheduling her classes. I told her plainly: I felt unsafe because she sat right next to me with her phone out while I was undressed. She doubled down, kept making snide comments, then followed me out of the locker room mocking me with "have a nice day." That's when I lost it and told her to go fuck herself, that no one should be pulling out a phone next to a naked person in a locker room. At the front desk, they brushed me off, said the GM would call me. Two days later she finally did, and her cold, terse, completely unempathetic tone made everything worse. She told me the woman had every right to have her phone in the locker room - that their rules only included the use of recording devices in the locker room. Then she actually suggested that if I didn't want to risk being filmed, I should use the private changing area by the pool. That floored me. I told her they were risking a potential lawsuit by not enforcing stricter rules. She just said, "Yes, we sure are," in a way that made it clear she didn't care about my opinion at all. Then she asked, "Do you want anything else?" I said, yes, I want your bosses to call me. Ridiculous. Frustrating. And I think that "they" didn't enjoy interacting with me. So I'll keep coming. And I will keep complaining until they commit to a safer space for everyone.

The location is an adults only YMCA and caters to the active seniors community. I've only visited one occasion thus far to check it out and I (mid 40's) was on the youthful side. The facility is in the excellently refurbished West Bend Company factory. There's a nearby coffee shop for the post workout and/or Tochi Ramen. There are plenty of workout machines and free weights in a comfortable atmosphere. The locker rooms are spacious & maintained nicely. Unlike the main Y branch you do need to provide your own lock, but with the age of the clientele I don't envision theft from lockers is much of a thing here. The shower stalls provide about twice the space in comparison to the main Y branch. The facility offers a sauna in the locker room. There is no pool or whirlpool. I hope a whirlpool is considered in any future expansion as I think it would fit in well with the adults only theme. The facility offers programming similar to the main Y branch, albeit in a smaller scale. A great downtown location and West Bend is lucky to be home to two YMCA facilities.

We did a tour of some of the facilities, were told about the hydrotherapy circuit, then released to the lockers to change to a plush robe and sandals. We were given a little gift then off to enjoy the rest of the facilities. Downstairs, there is a sauna, steam room with plunge pool, relaxation pool, and many chaise lounge chairs with blankets to relax. Upstairs, in a beautiful naturally lit space is the infrared sauna, ice room, and whirlpool. Being pregnant, the facilities are a little limited but I still had a great experience and it was nice to unplug, read a little, and enjoy the little snacks and water throughout. The pricing is VERY STEEP, but I would say it is worth it. If you can budget to go once every few months or even for a special occasion, I would highly recommend. We went for my mother's birthday and we had a lovely time. The ambiance is sublime, everything is clean and peaceful. The main level has a waterfall into a Venetian pool, loungers everywhere with fresh towels, infused water and small trail mix snacks. There are 2 saunas, a steam room, cold plunge pool, whirlpool, and ice room, and sleep room spread between two floors, all included if you purchase a service at the spa. Take advantage of the amenities and make a day of it. We stayed there for 6 hours and really felt we got our moneys worth. It's a great place to unplug and relax. Bring a book, order a glass of wine and relax on a lounger. Everything about the spa is elegant and refined. There are waitstaff there to take care of all of your needs and there is a cafe upstairs that has fine food if you're there long enough. I cannot recommend this place enough. Especially for a massage and a long day of relaxation.
