My wife and I recently learned we may have water damage in our bathroom due to a faulty toilet installation from a previous contractor years ago. We called York Enterprises based on their reputation and couldn't be happier. Tyler came out, inspected the damage and gave a very reasonable quote to repair the damage and replace the flooring. He even gave us a few recommendations on affordable flooring to buy which saved us hundreds of dollars. The team came out, made all the necessary repairs and were very pleasant. Can not review based on work because we could not get the company to come out. The morning of our estimate I took day off and they called to re-schedule for later in the week. They were a no-show that day! I texted and was told he put appt for the following week in his calendar. So, two days off work and I could not even get an estimate from this company! read more

York completed two projects for us and did a fantastic job on both. The first was a fairly straightforward replacement of an old fence with a beautiful new cedar fence - they did a fantastic job, no notes or complaints. However, where they really shone was in helping us figure out what to do to about our old, falling-apart, dangerous garage doors. Like-for-like replacements are no longer made and the HVAC routing in our garage prevented us from installing a modern overhead door. As the garage wasn't being used for car storage and our longer-term plan is to turn it into a rec room, York suggested installing two sets of French doors and framing them in to give them a finished look. We couldn't be happier with the results - the design is integrated seamlessly into the house and looks fantastic! Additionally, we've had a few other projects we asked for estimates on that we didn't end up pursuing for whatever reason, and they've always been understanding, professional, and willing to discuss other options where possible. I wasn't impressed with this contractor for a couple of reasons. I scheduled an appointment for them to come take a look at my kitchen to see what the cost would be to cut out cupboards and put in a dishwasher (since we currently don't have that set up). My appointment was for 11am, and two contractors showed up to my house at 9am swearing they had the right time. That's fine, better early than late I suppose. One gentleman was older, I believe his name was Duke and a younger gentleman, Andrew. However, I wasn't ready for them because I thought I had more time so I was in my pajamas and in the middle of cleaning up the kitchen so they could have enough space to evaluate. We had just moved in the week prior, so our house was a mess and it was clear that the gentleman were judgemental of the state of my home. They spent all of about 8 minutes in the kitchen and the first suggestion from Duke was to purchase a rolling dishwasher instead of cutting out cupboards so we didn't lose storage space. I explained we were willing to lose the storage for a dishwasher. He went on to condescendingly inform me that we would have to install electricity/an outlet onto one of the walls, cut out the cupboards, and rip up the countertops in order to make room for the dishwasher. I said I understood and he goes "Well, I just want to make sure that you understand that will all be an additional cost." Yes sir, I'm aware that I will need to pay you for the work you will do... He also looked around, rolled his eyes, made a deep sigh and said "And the quotes we provide will all be for entry level materials" implying that we wouldn't be able to purchase materials at a higher price point. I wrote down my email address and they said they would provide a proposal to me. I'm still waiting for that to come through. The overall experience left me with a) Duke didn't feel that this job was worth his time b) I, as a woman, couldn't possibly understand what he was talking about and c) the feeling that I had just gone to a used car dealership and the salesman was attempting to take advantage of me because it's not my area of expertise. Ladies, if you're going to use York, I suggest having a male friend/spouse around so Duke can feel like he's talking to someone worthy of his time. read more

We recently bought our first home - the kitchen was closed off with a very awkward partial wall, which we discovered was hiding a HVAC vent. We had no idea how or if our dream of opening up the kitchen was feasible, or financially attainable. So we definitely needed guidance and an expert opinion. We met with York Enterprises to discuss opening up our kitchen and expanding the layout, which entailed adding a beam, building a partial wall, moving an HVAC vent, and rerouting some electrical. We were explained the work that was required and Tyler recommended a contract based on time and materials in order to save money. (If you don't read any further just know: never do a time and materials contract!) He provided a few opinions of what items would cost and also stated what items weren't included in those figures. But at the end of the email he stated it was "a job likely under 5k." What exactly this included wasn't specified right there in that sentence, but I'm no contractor and had zero idea what anything would cost, so I took his statement at face value and did a happy dance internally that we could actually make this work. So first let's state the positive: A star for all of the guys that came to do the work. They were prompt, communicative, and funny. The job was finished quickly and turned out beautifully. And the project foreman was very informative, accommodating and very nice. The less than positive: I was always having to text/email to get a status update or find out when someone was coming out next. In both of my jobs, I'm an over-communicator to my clients, so maybe I'm expecting too much but not having to always ask for status updates would have been much appreciated. We were very surprised one morning to see the guys hired to finish the drywall pull into our driveway before 7am, as we hadn't been notified they were coming. Good thing we wake up early! Then, just like most contractor horror stories begin, we received the bill.. Yikes. $11,200. Not quite the $5,000 we were initially expecting. Another positive: the invoices they provide are very detailed and overall it is super transparent. There were minor errors and items billed to us that shouldn't have been and incorrect tax rates, (so double check your invoices) but overall, I can say as an accountant, I appreciated the reports provided. But there was still a massive discrepancy in what was initially communicated to us and what we were billed. We were told the work of the wall did account to 5k and it was all of the extra items that created the "cost creep." Should we have known better than to think this project was going to be 5k, 7k or 8k? I don't know, perhaps a more sage homeowner is nodding his head reading this. Is a $11,200 bill going to ruin our lives? Not necessarily, we'll survive, I guess we are just recovering from paying off our recent wedding so it stung a little more than it maybe should have. I just wish things had been explained a bit better. When the guy who's last name is the name of the company tells you something is going to cost x dollars, why would you think otherwise? Newsflash Tyler: providing a customer with a numerical figure, however casually, should be done carefully because it's going to hold weight in the customer's eyes. When we raised our concerns with how all of these charges weren't explicitly communicated with us, Tyler's response, to summarize, was "you didn't ask, so we didn't feel the need to say anything." Not exactly how I would handle customer service issues, but hey, what can you do. My husband and I have both recently become realtors, and are now getting into real estate investing, so in an an effort to see the light in any difficult situation - if nothing else, I guess I can say, thank you Tyler and York Enterprises for the learning experience! read more

Duke was the best!! Drafted plans exactly when I needed them. Highly recommend!

It's been a few years since we had Duke finish our basement. But he was fantastic to work with. We had a very old home in the North End of Tacoma. He had remodeled the kitchen for the previous owner who had nothing but praise for the work. His crew was respectful, clean, and efficient. I have seen this company's work in neighborhood houses. Every neighbor who has hired them raves about them. Excellent quality, caring people and a good value. Not the cheapest bid but not the most expensive either. Happy customers are a good indication the prices are reasonable. I've had them over to provide an estimate to repair a basement damaged by flood. They have gone above and beyond to delineate the estimate for my insurance which has been a time-consuming hassle. über professional and polite. I can't wait to work with them. read more

Since it was a smaller job I guess they sent out a guy who clearly did not know what he was doing. He miscut antique doors and grossly misaligned knobs on custom cabinets. None of which can be repaired and nothing was offered to remedy the hack job. He had a horrible attitude to go with it. We will never use them again and want to get the word out, so others will go elsewhere as well. read more
