The food is really good at this little restaurant. Elle & Jack's leans toward Italian cuisine, but it gets a little funky with it by offering things like chimichurri salmon, a burger and steak frites. The menu is small, though, which is a relief. A pared down menu is my favorite kind of menu. Give me a small list of the things you make well, and I'll be happy. We got the arancini as an appetizer, of course. My kids had never had arancini before, and they loved them. But it's hard not to love a fried ball of rice covered in red sauce! I got the steak Caesar, because I do love a good Caesar salad. At this point in my life, I'm pretty much obligated to order the Caesar if it's on a menu. The girl can't help it. The steak was cooked perfectly (medium well), and the only thing I would change would be to make the croutons smaller. We also got a side of charred Brussel sprouts with bacon and dates. These were good but needed to be a little more charred! In my opinion, Brussels sprouts taste best when they're scorched. A side order is huge and meant to be shared. It could have easily been shared with three or four people. Elle & Jack's does not have an official kids' menu printed on a paper, but they have an unofficial kids' menu, which apparently lives in each server's head and can only be shared verbally. It's like five or six items. From what I remember -- because our server's words floated away from me like dandelion seeds in the wind as soon as he spoke them -- kids can choose from pasta with red sauce, buttered noodles, a grilled cheese and a cheeseburger. One of my kids got pasta with red sauce, and it was a perfect portion size for a child. My child liked it but said that the noodles were too chewy (they were probably cooked al dente). My other kid got a grilled cheese, and he liked it just fine. The kids' grilled cheese comes with fries. The scene here is slightly upscale but casual. I saw people who were dressed up and people who were not dressed up. I think it's definitely a come-as-you-are joint, but a place to visit when you want something a little more elevated.

During my most recent visit in mid-February, I saw many boxes of chocolates for Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day, and they were priced at 50% off. Of course, I also saw many regularly priced boxes of in-season chocolates. These chocolates were available in dark, milk, and white and had fillings such as creams (e.g., butter, coconut, orange, raspberry, strawberry, and vanilla), nuts (e.g., almond, cashew, peanut, pecan, and walnut), and many others (e.g., brownie, caramel, toffee, and white-chocolate truffle). Some flavors were sugar-free. I also saw other sweet treats such as gourmet caramel apples, hard candies, gummy candies, fudges, chocolate-covered strawberries and pretzels, and ice creams. My favorite product to buy is the 3-pound box of "bloopers" chocolates. Compared to a few years ago, the price for the bloopers has increased. I now paid $28 for two 3-pound boxes, which is still a bargain. One employee gave my husband and me a free sample of milk chocolate, and she promptly and politely rang up our purchase and thanked us. When we got home, I opened the boxes and saw a mixture of dark and milk chocolates. I have not yet eaten all of them, but the boxes appear to include a variety of flavors. If you know, you know. This iconic bakery has been a staple of the city for generations, and after recently celebrating its 90th anniversary, it's easy to see why people keep coming back. What makes Gus's so special isn't just the famous cream sticks (although they absolutely live up to the hype). It's a family-run business that has become part of the fabric of the community, and there's something special about supporting a local institution that has been serving customers with pride for nearly a century. Beyond the cream sticks, they offer cakes, cookies, pastries, and just about every sweet treat you could hope to find in a hometown bakery. On a previous visit, we did run into a small issue when a few of our cream sticks were missing that signature filling. I gave them a call, and instead of excuses, I was met with genuine kindness and a sincere desire to make it right. On our next visit, they more than delivered, and the experience reminded me why customer service still matters. Gus's Goodies is one of those places I'll always make time for whenever I'm back in Weirton. Thank you for the continued hospitality, wonderful service, and for making the city just a little sweeter with every cream stick.
