my wife and i went in for a little vegan sweet treat but left with a fantastic story of horrible customer and amazing customer service. when an entitled customer came in expecting to buy a full cake day of, the employee was kind, polite, knowledgeable, and apologetic that the bakery does not provide whole cakes day of due to staffing. despite push back, she never got rude or frustrated. she provided them with a slice of the cake and finished the interaction with continued empathy. we were next in line and even then, she remained light hearted and positive. she provided amazing service to us and we got to talk about the arrogance and narcissism that some people carry over the best vegan cake and iced tea. for the woman who gave this small business a hard time, because it's apparent you frequent Yelp, if you are hosting a lot of people and driving almost an hour to a bakery: it helps to call ahead and confirm availability as well as planning ahead appropriately for large parties. don't expect customers to take your side and try walking with less entitlement. read more

This is a decently popular, somewhat upscale cake and sweet shop. I decided to give it a try and just taste one of their classic frosted brownie. It was alright. Honestly nothing too special, and quite a bit more expensive than at other places in the city and in the area. The frosting was pretty good, pretty rich, but the brownie itself was fairly dry. This is a great and alternative spot for those wanting something a little different than going out for drinks / to the bar. I say this because they are open late several nights a week! Great spot for dessert after dinner or as part of a date, too. I specifically went in for the "fancy" hot chocolate, which is made with real chocolate pieces. The baked goods were also tasty - my only suggestion is to make sure you ask to have your item warmed up, depending on what you get, as they are kept in a cool case and something like a brownie for example was pretty hard to eat. The sever did recognize this and offered to heat it up after the fact; which made it perfect. All of the baked goods were perfectly wrapped or garnished. Delectable dessert spot and one of the only late night dessert spots in all of Lawrenceville. Victorian inspired decor provides a novel and cozy, speakeasy feel. While the small buttercream cakes, puddings, and various baked goods seem to be the stars of the show, don't sleep on their cakes! These are dense, decadent, and not too sweet. I repeat, nothing is too sweet here making it a great spot for those who are easily overwhelmed by really sugary desserts you'll often find at the grocery store. This has been on my list to check out for a while. I had heard good things and appreciated the ingredients they use (or rather don't use). Another one of our go to spots for a sweet treat was sold out and we were in Lawrenceville so it was the perfect opportunity to check out Butterwood. I looked online at the order online to get some ideas as we were on our way. Unfortunately when we got inside they were out of the top couple things we had looked at. I understand it was later on a Saturday and running out but then why did they show available to order online. Parking is easy. I love that they are open late. There was a cool vibe and eclectic decor. It was definitely busy and full of people enjoying coffee, tea and desserts. We just wanted to grab something to go and settled on the blueberry blood orange bread. They packaged it up for us and we were on our way. We didn't even pull away before we had to try a bite. It was very tasty. It was obvious that it had real blood orange in it and the pops of blueberry were nice. We will definitely stop by and try some other options and maybe stay and enjoy a beverage. We sat in all day. One person that we could see managed the whole place by themself that day yet they did such a good job. They were very helpful and personable. They bring the items out to you. The music was nice... never intrusive and didn't have to hear the same song twice, not once all day (which is great for customers and even better for baristas!) The sweets were excellent! Highly recommend the raspberry tea cake, it has lovely tart fresh berries inside. The interior is so beautifully and lovingly decorated. Cannot explain how much I loved my experience here! From the decor to the staff and of course the food and drinks, 10/10 all around. The space is decorated beautifully with plants, long curtains, velvet chairs, low lit lamps, and even a Christmas tree. We ordered a few of the cakes to try. It was so difficult to narrow down our choices because everything looked and sounded delicious. I opted for the strawberry rose cardamom love cake. It came out cold because it was topped and layered with homemade whipped cream. This cake was delightful. So moist, flavorful, and the flavors worked so well together. I also ordered the hot chocolate which comes deconstructed and was honestly so satisfying to put together. My friend had two tea cakes, one vegan and one not. The chocolate cake with the espresso buttercream was easily my favorite, but the ube one was tasty as well. She got French press coffee and it came out with a little sand timer to let her know when to press. Cannot wait to come back! read more

One of my absolute favorite spots in Pittsburgh. We needed this place. Not only is it STUNNING atheistically inside of the shop (I mean, it is), it's just absolutely the coolest to have a dessert place that is open later for when you want to have a little treat and be cozy out or catch up with a friend, or even to take a teenager. I recently visited with my 16 year old cousin and it was so nice to have a place to get out of the cold for 30 minutes while enjoying a sweet treat. Their desserts are gorgeous and are all so unique. There is something for everyone here. For my wedding reception, I wanted to get my non-dairy guests a special treat and couldn't think of a better place to get their desserts from. I live super close to Butterwood and I'm kind of astounded that I haven't reviewed it since I go to get a slice or anything from them at least once a week. Last week twice. When we have family in town or if I have friends in town or even work gatherings I always suggest here because of the food, the service, the ambience, the food... It is just so fun to be able to sit down have a cup of tea and eat a delicious piece of cake or any of their pastries. This shop is really a gem in the city. Every single time I come here I love everything that I get. And I get a few things at once and eat them all. My daughter who's two also enjoys coming for a small glass of milk and a little pastry of her own. The employees are always super sweet to her and she feels so special whenever she gets to go there. I like sitting in the high back chairs and sipping my tea as I read a book, talk with friends, or crochet. They do have Wi-Fi so you can always bring your computer and work. But I would say just enjoy the time and sit back and relax. My current favorite things to get are the cobbler and the butterscotch tart. The cobbler is usually seasonal and the last one that I got was apple raspberry and it was delicious. I love that they warm it up and I love the top is so nice and crispy. The butterscotch tart is delicious The pastry shell that it's in is flaky and buttery and the butterscotch inside with the whipped cream is amazing. You just have to take my word for it and just try it. My go to tea is the jasmine rose green tea I believe, but it could just be jasmine green. I think because it's winter they no longer have iced drinks but their hibiscus iced tea was very very refreshing in the summer. So I hope that they bring that back. I was thrilled to find myself nearby when Butterwood was open recently. I had heard so many good things and wanted to check it out. First of all, the interior is so Victorian and beautiful and dark all at the same time and I loved it so much. There's some quaint outdoor seating and some indoor seats as well. They do serve coffee and tea but let's be real, you come here for the baked goods. The cakes are beautiful -- the floral arrangements on them set them apart from others I've seen for sure. My friend had a vegan poppy seed and orange cupcake that she raved about and I actually opted for a chocolate chip cookie sandwich filled with peanut butter frosting. It was so salty and rich and delicious, I honestly wish I had gotten another. I would definitely come back to check out other items. read more

I was on vacation with my partner. We LOVED this place so much we went back 3 times during our weekend visit. No dessert elsewhere could top how good their baked goods sounded and we tried a little bit of everything!! The service was walk up to order and they would prepare the tea/baked goods and deliver it to where you were sitting. About half of the seats were couches so very comfortable but they had two tables with benches if you are looking to get some work done.
