I recently grabbed a hot dog here while You Sly Dog was parked on 9th directly across from Tucson Improv Movement. The worst thing about these hot dogs is that I cannot eat them all.  I asked the woman what her favorite was and I am so glad I did! I had the New Mexican, at her suggestion. This was a generously sized hotdog topped with with grilled steak, ground beef, green chili, white onion, spicy sour cream sauce. We visited this food truck while they were at a roundup. My son and I both got the Tony Baloney I think it was called.... We both agreed that it was Ok, not great, not bad. The real downer was that it seemed like we were a bother to the person who was there, even though we were the only customers. I had heard raving reviews about their vegan options and decided to give them a try at Tucson Comic-Con... I feel like I can't even express how disappointed I am! We specifically asked for our food to be made vegan and the staff was bewildered at the request. We specified we cannot have dairy as I have a severe allergy, and when we were given our food it was covered in cheese. I totally understand things happen and they apologized and remade our order, but when we started eating them, my girlfriend found a hair in the bottom of her bun and was unable to eat it. I'm so sad I waited for so long to try this place and heard so many great things!! Enter You Sly Dog, who offers vegetarian Sonoran Dogs. Oh, my gosh, these things are amazing. I keep meaning to try all their other offerings but I can't. I'll drive all the way to the other side of town to get a vegetarian Sonoran Dog. The salsa and cheese that go on top are so flavorful. The bun that encases all of this deliciousness is so fresh, it makes me wonder if they baked it just for me. You can find You Sly Dog all around town but when they go to Hop Shop or Caps and Corks you can get an ice cold beer to go with the hot dog and literally nothing is better. read more

Ramon Laquez's labor of love is a stunning red and white 1962 International Harvester Metro Van, complete with an Arizona Historical license plate, serving up some hot diggity dogs! Tucson has an abundance of hot dog stands, but none like this. You've never met a hot dog like this before. Meet the New Mexican, Ramon's favorite, and mine too! Take a fluffy Mexican bun, stuff it with an all beef hot dog, steak, ground beef green chili with caramelized onion, drizzle some spicy sour cream and top with fritos....mega meat masterpiece. Your taste buds will be dancing like Mexican jumping beans. I also had the Baloney Tony. Remember that delicious, fluffy Mexican bun, well wrap an all beef hot dog in some baloney, top it with onion, tomato mustard and special sauce. I left out the genius ingredient... peppercinis. Why have I never thought of this? So good. The menu is super cute featuring heads of super cute pups superimposed on humans. For example, the chihuahua luchador representing the New Mexican. I always try the Chicago dog where ever it is offered, and so, with high hopes and a spirit of engagement, I got the Big Chicago from You Slay Me. It was pretty good, but unfortunately, the bun was much bigger than the dog, and with a dog with so many toppings, you need more presence from your meat. This place is just so damned perfect. You're out at a park on the weekend, special someone next to you (possibly walking your dog); the sun is out (maybe you're trying to walk off a hangover from last night) and then BAM! I have a slightly skewed version of a perfect day, but that one is definitely a contender. The guy that thought of this is my hero. The El American is a classic hot dog, but when you get it I recommend keeping the relish. It's a little sweeter than I'm used to, but it works surprisingly well. The Old Chicago is about as spicy as I'm willing to venture at this place, but the spiciness is really well balanced and allows you to taste all the other flavors. The bun is closer to a Kaiser Roll on this one, and it works really well. The undisputed champion here is the New Mexican though. It's an all beef dog topped with steak and ground beef (I know, right?), green chili, sour cream, mustard and crushed Frito's...(cue fireworks, little explosion BIG EXPLOSION, flames...)drops the microphone & walks away****. boom. read more

Pretty delicious dogs! I first tried this food truck during Winterhaven and now I can't see the VW bus without getting something. I have only tried the Chicago dog and the Diablo. I have never had food from a food truck before, so going to Winterhaven was my first time both attending Winterhaven and buying food off a food truck. I think it set the bar on food trucks fairly high. First, the service was better than most restaurants are. My friend asked for a dog without mustard and they accidentally made it with. She felt really bad for saying that she asked for no mustard, but they gave the "oops" dog to another friend in our group who didn't order anything and made her a new one. Considering a lot of restaurants will just wipe condiments off, that was a breath of fresh air from a more casual food venue. Second, they do not scrimp on condiments, so avoid tipping the dogs and make sure to get plenty of napkins. I'm not one for really messy food, but the flavor it packed was totally worth it. The next time I go to Winterhaven or if I see this truck when I'm downtown, I'll remember this truck and seek it out for a good quick bite. read more

I wolfed down the "New Mexican" hot dog after drinking too many pints of beer at the bar next to the Sly Dog truck. It was AMAZING. Delicious, just the right amount of spice, and Frito chips in there, too. They make a gluten free option of their dogs which I think is just the Frito chips and then everything else, so if you're into that trendy fashion of avoiding the bun, they got your back. I'm eager to try the "Chernobyl" which has ghost chili and everything else spicy. Dogs are about $5 to $6 and crafted and yummy. The first time I tried them, they were set up outside PACC (Pima Animal Care Center) - the boyfriend and I were there looking for a new addition to the family :) Had the Chicago dog - and I've been hooked ever since... Went on to try my first Sonoran dog from this place, and although I was WAAAAY skeptical at first, I must say this is my new favorite!! YUM!! Never thought mayo, pinto beans etc would taste good on a hot dog, but WOW was I wrong!! What am I am about to tell you cannot be made up. Unfortunately, I have no photos because I've only been here twice, both at night time, and I do not support flash photography. I'm only going to describe my second adventure there, because it is what? A Doozy. You Sly Dog is often at Winterhaven, I'm sure my fellow tucsonians know what that is. My first time there was AMAZING because of these delicious sonoran dogs. I hyped it up to my friends and convinced them to go, not only for the decorations but for the sonoran dogs, that to my pleasure and glee, also offered vegetarian options of every menu item (my friend was vegetarian, and at the time, so was I). I loved that it was so accommodating to those that don't eat meat. Sonoran dogs, in my humble opinion, are one of Arizona's best offers! Anyways! Me and my friends go and get our dogs, they're delicious. Scrumptious. Delectable. Mouth Watering. Every darn thing I hyped them up to be! After that, I had wanted another one, but realized I hadn't transferred money to my account, so unfortunately, I was out of luck. That right there was foreshadowing, but I'm a Taurus and we're stubborn. Dejected, I turn around to return to my friends and lo and behold, I found $20 on the floor. I think my mind was trying to warn me or something, because I yelled out asking if anyone had dropped some money. How I wish someone had said yes. I convinced one of my friends to split a dog with me, and suggested that we get one called the "Chernobyl" dog, that was red flag number three. Nothing named Chernobyl is good! I just didn't listen!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So we get it, completely ignoring the worried look the cashier gave us, and try to cut it with a plastic butter knife. Fourth red flag, that dog was hard to cut through, and it was a VEGGIE DOG. They're made of SOY. I also need to say that we were bragging that it wouldn't be that hot, and that we were used to spice it can't be that bad. At the very least I thought my friend could handle it, she's Indian and spice is an everyday thing for her!!! At first, it wasn't that bad, just tasted like a doggo with toppings. BUT THEN IT HIT US. That thing was so darn hot, I can't even describe it in words, but my friend started crying and I started hyperventilating and all I had was soda and the carbonation made it even worse. I think I saw my life flash before my eyes, my past, present and future all at once. This was during Winter and I was SWEATING. I thought I was going to die, at the very least, pass out for a good 4 hours. My friend had the sense to throw hers out, but like I said, i'm a Taurus and I'm stubborn and those hotdogs were $6 and I'm cheap when I wanna be. So I sat there and forced myself to eat it with my friends pleading for me to stop, but I wouldn't. I couldn't. That heat lasted for hours after the fact. I truly never want to experience it again. I was sure I was going to lose at least 60 pounds just from the fact that it was burning through my insides. And you know what the worst part was? I got home and told my dad about it, he told me he knew the guy that owned that truck. I didn't know that beforehand. We basically paid to suffer. Overall, 10/10, avoid the Chernobyl LIKE THE PLAGUE, but everything else is top dollar. Unless you like unreasonable amounts of spice and crying for your mommy, then by all means, get the Chernobyl! :) read more
