I've been to Tucson several times this year for business. Due to my hectic schedule, I usually order delivery and just call it a day. But during this recent visit, I decided to change things up. Let me tell you, the food scene in this city is incredible. I'll probably post several reviews in the coming days, but this one had to be first. Sonoran hot dogs are legendary, and everyone told me they were a must-try while in the area. Several places were recommended, but this establishment was only 10 minutes away from my location -- and yes, it was the #1 recommendation. So luck was definitely on my side. This is a family business that has been featured in dozens of YouTube videos (and probably TV shows as well). I was greeted by a very sweet and polite young lady and ordered a traditional Sonoran Dog, a carne asada taco, and an adobada taco. All I have to say is WOW. The combination of toppings on that dog was amazing. I had never tried anything like it before, and now I want more. That crispy bacon-wrapped hot dog with the beans, onions, crema... just incredible. The tacos were fantastic as well. I can't wait until I return to Tucson in two months. I'm definitely going back and will probably order three of those dogs next time. They also have plenty of seating, both outdoors and indoors, with nice cold A/C for those brutal Arizona summer days. read more

Came here for lunch with my fiance, he has been coming here for years and he wanted me to try this place out because he liked it so much. My fiancé ordered sonoran hot dogs and it was very good and delicious with all the condiments watever I want on it. Service here is everyone is nice and friendly. Ambience here they have an indoor sitting and outdoor sitting. The inside location for dining, is inside what was once the oldest bar in the Tucson area, and still retains the old eclectic styling. read more

This place was a surprise. It was reccommended to us by an uber driver and we decided to stop in for some lunch. You order at the window outside and can choose to either eat outside or inside. It's best to wait for food outside because they will call your number (usually in English and Spanish) and it can be difficult to hear. On the outside it looks pretty simple, but inside is a completely different vibe. The restaurant was nicely air conditioned and decorated, with large booths and tables, as well as TV's hung up to watch the soccer game. The food was delicious, the adobada and carne asada tacos were amazing and so flavorful (the chicken taco seemed a bit bland after the first two). The birria and menudo was also amazing. They have bottles to choose from for drinks, they had Jarritos, bottled water, and Diet Coke at the time. El Nene was so delicious, well priced, and definitely worth a stop. read more

I've probably been to Aqui Con El Nene close to 50 times and it never disappoints. The carne asada tacos are incredible perfectly grilled, super flavorful, and consistently some of the best in town. The Sonoran dogs are phenomenal too, easily among my favorite anywhere. The restaurant has a great vibe with a cool little outdoor seating area as well as indoor seating if you want to get out of the sun. The salsa bar is another highlight tons of delicious options and everything tastes fresh and homemade. What really keeps me coming back (besides the amazing food) is the service. The staff is always friendly, welcoming, and on top of everything. It's one of those places you can return to again and again and know you'll get an awesome meal every time. One of our favorite places here in Tucson! Great food, fast service, and wonderful prices. You'll get your moneys worth and FLAVORS. One of the places I craved moving back from Vegas. Always will be back. Their Sonoran hot dogs are my favorite out of the many places here in Tucson. Their tacos as well. They have many menu options to choose from. A salsa bar with other toppings included. They have outdoor and indoor seating. I remember eating at this place when it was just a food truck in front of a bar and now that building is theirs. It's great to see their growth. I'll do more reviews on other items just to give an in site on other options they offer. My wife got their carne asada fries and we love when restaurants put actual nacho cheese on their fries and this place did just that so thumbs up. I had an early dinner here yesterday by myself. The weather was nice so I sat outside. (There is an inside area, but it was empty.) I ordered three tacos (chicken, beef and pork; $4.68 each). Always enjoy the food here. Everything I've ever gotten has been good but I always stick to the same things usually, which is the Sonoran hotdogs. My husband got those this time as well as the cheeseburger. I got 2 new to me items but I cannot remember the names lol. One was a baked potato with meat and cheese on it which was so good. The others were like a stuffed taco/quesadilla type thing which were very good. I also got their Jamaica. The only complaint I have about this place is the access. There is only 1 way to drive in and out of the parking lot and it's in such an inconvenient spot on the road. It's hard to justify going to a chain fast food restaurant when you are craving tacos or a burritos in Tucson... and this place is justifies my comment. Reasonably priced, freshly made and darn right delicious! I got a marinated pork, chicken and steak taco ...I preferred the marinated pork but if you are looking for something milder, the chicken or streak will do fine. Tacos are sprinkled with shredded cabbage for crunch. I highly recommend ordering and eating on site... while you can take out, due to the amount of protein on the soft tortilla... it's going to get soggy if you wait too long. The fresh salsa bar is replenished on a regular basis and you know it's fresh as you can see staff chop up stuff for the salad bar. Ample seating indoors and outdoors. Service is quick. Free parking lot... and fret not if there isn't a spot... due to their quick service, spots open up quickly. Constant stream of patrons. Prices are reasonable. Pretty disappointed overall. The tacos, plates, and quesadillas all felt overpriced for what you get. Two friends got the carne asada tacos and carne asada plate -- the one with the plate nearly choked because the meat was so tough. With so many other spots in Tucson offering better quality at lower prices, I don't see a reason to come back. read more

First time here and I am impressed! This was recommended by my boyfriend as one of his favorite places. He also mentioned it just recently turned into a restaurant with seating while before it was outdoor seating only. Ordering is still done outside but you can wait inside if needed. They will call your order number once it's ready. They are very fast with food prep so wait time is usually only around 10 minutes. While you wait you can go to the salsa bar to get the various salsas or other toppings you want for your food. I prefer other places in the area instead. After all the toppings, like the VERY heavy mayo, the bun became very soggy, and hard to even taste the hotdog (on the smaller side) itself. I've had quite a few Sonoran hot dogs in the area, yet wouldn't rank this among my favorites. Service could've been friendlier. Casual ambiance. One huge positive was their tortillas! You can pretty easily find places serving solid and legit tortillas all over Tucson, and this place is one of them. I don't get why we can't have LEGIT tortillas like this in the Bay Area?? I hadn't been here in years and was driving by tonight craving tacos so I stopped in. I used to get the Sonoran dog every time I came, which is one of the best in town. I had a little bit of sticker shock when I looked at the menu tonight. I got a carne asada taco and a birria taco. The portion size was generous so I'll give the price a pass. The birria wasn't that great, it wasn't as flavorful as other birria I've had. The carne asada on the other hand, was the best I've had in Tucson. I'll be back for more of that. The service was friendly and the salsa/topping bar had tons of options and was clean and constantly being stocked. There's a sign on the register that you get a discount for paying in cash. I told the cashier I was paying in cash and would take the discount, but I didn't get any discount. In my opinion, this is a must stop for anyone visiting Tucson. read more

This is a great taco spot. I'm from San Diego California and make frequent trips out to the area and always stop by for some tacos . This time around I had carne asada and birra tacos. I would choose the Carne Asada was my favorite. It was just tasty .The outdoor area has an open salsa bar, variety of other items to add to your taco which is the flavor to the taco. The customer service is great, the outdoor and inside area are always clean. I hadn't been to this location before but will definitely go back when I'm in the area! Definitely a popular spot for locals.. I've been to the one on the south side and it gets pretty busy. I liked the outdoor area at this one tho (they still have inside seating tho) . It's quick counter service, fast but friendly. Don't miss the salsa bar! I always get the caramelo with steak and am never let down. But you can't go wrong with anything on the menu and I will definitely have to try the breakfast option ! I have been coming here since they were a food truck outside of the Rusty Nail. Hands-down, my favorite taco and Sonoran dog spot in Tucson. Every good taco spot needs a generous salsa bar. This place has a great spread of fresh salsa and veggies. I highly recommend the Taco Yaqui. It's a green chili stuffed with Carne Asada, mushrooms, and cheese on top of two flour tortillas. I try a lot of taco spots, but just keep coming back here as it is the gold standard. read more

They present their dog with beans, onions, mustard, tomatoes and jalapeno sauce (I got mine with no mayo). They have a condiment bar where you can add more stuff, but I ate mine as it came. It was delicious! They are more streamlined on the toppings, and the dog is not overflowing with crap falling out all over the place like some Sonoran hot dog spots. It had minimal beans in it which I liked, and the bacon wrapped dog was solid. The bun was awesome! Nice and soft and chewy! Great bread! Washed it down with a bottle of Coke. As good as you can get for the Tucson Sonora Dog Community. I have always wanted to come here, but so busy and often I forget. The parking lot is only accessible from the steep East side of the location, don't be shy getting in or out. Came here for a quick bite while working on a project and they mentioned El Nene and I jumped at the chance. We arrived just as they were opening, so we beat the rush. Orders taken on the East side of building, signs on wall tell the story of a wonderful feast. I ordered two sonora dogs and a horchata, went inside to the tables to wait, there is outdoor seating as well under a shade. Most people were to-go, and the orders began to roll in. Didn't take more than 10 minutes to get our food. very tasty and good dressing up of the Sonora Dog, pepers were a little hot, but that is often 50/50 on sweet versus sweat. Horchata to cool down. Thanked the busy staff, I'm assuming we could leave our items on the table, but we put tray next to trash can after emptying trash. Very good, Tucson Food. Pretty sure El Nene has the best Sonoran Dog in town. Thin, crispy bacon, perfectly soft (but not soggy) bun, and a spot-on topping ratio--it's easy to savor every bite. At under $5 a dog, you might as well grab two. El Nene does other things too, but I always zero in on the Sonoran. I've come in with group orders for 5-6 people (all with special requests--sorry!), and the staff nails it every time. Orders are fast, accurate, and friendly. Been eating here since it was a small cart in the parking lot if an old Tavern, quality is gone, portions small, and prices are ridiculous.

Compared to Tacos Apson, this place is not nearly as good. The cabeza was way too salty but I could tell the seasonings were good. The Al Pastor was dry. The carne asada was pretty good and had a nice smokey flavor. The tortillas were too crispy for my liking, but not a big deal. read more

I had second thoughts of trying it out, but to my surprise...the place is clean and well maintained. It's not trashed, they are doing good maintaining the cleanliness of this place.
