My father passed away in July of last year. He passed unemployed, with no life insurance, and an extreme amount of debt. I'm an only child and lost him at 21. I had absolutely no way to finance a funeral on my own at 21. They would not cremate my father until they received their payment in full. Kept him in a freezer for a month harassing me with calls saying "We don't do payment plans." Didn't even want to cremate him but wasn't given a choice financially. I'll never forget being put in that conference room while being shown a slideshow of coffins just for the funeral director to scroll to the bottom and show me the "Cheapest Option" which was quite literally a cardboard box with a makeshift pillow for $500 and tell me "This is the most cost efficient option if you want to give him a little bit of dignity." If I want to give him a little bit of dignity? Are you serious? 1 year later and I'm desperately trying to enter trauma therapy that I still can't afford because I am haunted by the guilt that I couldn't give him a proper end of life ceremony and that he had to rot in a freezer because I couldn't pay the funeral home in full. On top of it, my funeral director quit halfway through. Edit: Update: See their response, the caring facade ends once they speak to you in private. She (Zoe) most likely meant to forward my email and responded directly to me instead given my name isn't Angela. Again, I wasn't "expecting" anything, I posted my experience because it clearly still affects me till this day. What do I have to "gain" from posting a negative review. And I never said they held his remains, I picked them up! But that doesn't negate the fact that he could have been cremated SOONER and not held in that freezer, I could've been sent the bill and paid in full later. They aren't compassionate in private. After my mother passed away, I selected Young's since our family had used them twice before. Jasmine was my mom's funeral director and was incredibly helpful. She explained all of the costs upfront and handled all of the details. This was important since I wasn't thinking well while mourning my loss, and I had no other family members to help me. She helped plan my mom's burial (and attended it) at Willamette National Cemetery, helped plan the service, located a pianist, and put together a beautiful slideshow with music after I supplied photos. I wanted some information about an upcoming Viewing for a dear friend and called Young's Funeral Home. I spoke to a woman named Jenna. She excels at being understanding, compassionate and respectful. Jenna answered my question about music with a bit of humor, which got us to laughing. At times like these, humor can be invaluable. One other factor that made this experience as pleasant as possible was Jenna's patience; through our entire conversation, I never got the feeling of being rushed, even when I re-asked questions. I highly recommend Young's Funeral Home in Tigard. Both my parents recently passed away; one in April and the other in August. The staff at Young's guided me through every step, answered every question and helped to make a heartbreaking time more bearable. I had the pleasure of working with Brittni, Julie A. our Celebrant, Jenna, Baily and Allison. I'm sure there were other staff members working behind the scenes. I want to publicly thank you all again for your compassion, kindness, and professionalism ~ thank you. The staff helped me create four memorial services (two at Willamette National and two at Young's Funeral home) that were truly memorable. I was going to NOT leave a review or make comments, and just let it pass while I'm grieving, but Youngs keeps asking (via e-mails and phone calls) me for a review, so here here is what I sent them; I know this is just a business to a funeral director, but this lack of customer service is gut wrenching when someone is grieving. My mother and I have entrusted you, Young's Funeral home with the details... trusted you, the professionals in this the most painful time. We stopped by your Tigard office 2 years ago before mom got too sick, and verified that everything on her insurance policy was in order. We spoke with Robin Rose, who assured us all was fine. The day after mom died, for 4 FULL days sent me paperwork. The first set of documents had all the names incorrect. At this time, while crying and grieving I should not have been editing your mistakes, but there I was, editing. I number listed the edits to be made and returned the documents. The following day I received the documents back with most (not all) edits made. Despite not having all my questions answered, I signed them and again, returned them. I asked via e-mail, THREE different times if there were any additional fees or charges that I should be aware of. I was told there would be no trailing expenses, or additional costs, and that everything was handled. That was on Monday. DAY THREE I got a call from Karen Night, a manager, telling me the paperwork was incomplete, asking me the same questions I'd already been asked by the previous person, and then telling me there were fees that needed to be paid. She said she'd get back to me by the end of the day. I said if she couldn't, then to let me know so I didn't keep waiting. By 9 PM Wednesday night (day 3) I had heard nothing. Meanwhile, where is my mom's body? What is happening with my mother? At 10AM Thursday morning, I had still heard nothing so I called and left a message for Karen Night. She returned my call at 10:10 telling me she sent me some paperwork via e-mail at 4:30 the day before. I had nothing. I told her she should have called me to confirm receipt, since she knew I was already upset with them. She agreed, she should have called instead of making me have YET another sleepless night. FOUR SLEEPLESS nights, stress piled on top of my grief and I STILL did not know what is going on with my mother's pre-paid, pre-planned cremation. Through stress and incompetence, your team has caused additional TRAUMA on me during a very painful time, the DEATH of my mother. Is this how you run your business? Is this what other people go through with you when they turn to you in their bereavement? THIS is unacceptable. I would be remiss to not mention this treatment to someone in power to make it better for the bereaved who will follow in our footsteps. read more

My mother passed just a couple months ago and Young's funeral home came recommended by a family friend. Jasmine was very professional and guided us through the whole process and service during such a difficult time. She had amazing communication about every detail, and even helped facilitate the contact between the cemetery we chose, skyline memorial and gardens. It's one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the area and we chose to have the service up there. The service went perfectly and the staff were extremely helpful in the set up and clean up. We decided to hire a celebrant to officiate the service, Allison Picard. Everyone said the service was beautiful, and could not believe the love and feel Allison brought to the service. Youngs has handled the arrangements for my family members twice now. The first was in 2005 when my mother passed away. My husband recommended them because Masjed As Saber, his mosque in SW Portland, has a contract with them. I found the staff to be helpful, compassionate and patient (patience is key because the bereaved are not always thinking clearly and may change their minds). Sadly, my family recently needed their services again when our 21 year old son passed away in Colorado. Natasha was very kind and efficient as she worked with the Colorado funeral home to get our boy back to Oregon. Youngs is culturally sensitive to the Moslem traditions of washing and then visiting with the dead before burial. Being able to prepare my son and then spending a little time with him really helped my family. In terms of pricing, death is expensive. The funeral home in Colorado did most of the heavy lifting, so their bill was over $2100. Our bill for Youngs was just over $400 (pick up from the airport, storage, cloth body bag). Members from our community transported our son to the Islamic Cemetery. Kindness, sensitivity, and compassion? Youngs has it. read more
