I'm secretly really obsessed with spray tans, I blame my pale lineage and desire to be a person that absorbs sun, instead of being blistered by it. Pale people want to look tan, too. And for us, there are spray tans. And if you find yourself in East London, the spray tan of your dreams lives at Tao Hair & Beauty. A tastefully low key salon just off Great Eastern Street, Tao Hair & Beauty doesn't look like much from the outside. However, as you enter you'll find a very nice shop with friendly staff and great treatments, hardwood floors, super clean surfaces and a variety of options to make you prettier. My kind of place. I can do without the pomp and circumstance that some Shoreditch spas seem to revel in, so Tao is right up my alley and also close to home. Demet was my spray tanner and she was both professional and friendly. This salon uses St. Tropez system which is a good one that looks pretty natural (not orange). The spray tanning area is set up in one of the rooms downstairs and is clean and private. Never spray tanned before? Here are my top tips: Step-by-step guide to airbrush tanning: 1. Make an appointment. 2. Day of or night before: EXFOLIATE. 3. Show up with NO makeup, lotions, deodorant, etc. 4. Go to Tao. 5. Go into room. 6. Strip to your knickers (ok, its a bit personal, get over it). 7. Demet (or other tech) applies airbrush tan, in your selected shade. 8. Dry a bit. 9. Dry a bit more. 10. No exercising or ahem...other sweaty activities for 6-8 hours. Plan accordingly. 11. Shower at least 8 hours later. Bronzer washes off. 12. Beautiful (fake) tan that lasts for a week+ and all of your friends will wonder when you have the time to sunbathe. 13. Remember to moisturize to keep your tan long and strong. 14. Repeat. At 24.99, it's a bargain. I will now look sun-kissed for a week instead of fried to a crisp. Also, no wrinkles! Hasta luego, I'm off to Mexico!

The staff are very friendly and clearly explain the procedure to you but it does seem pretty rushed. I would recommend to get someone to do your tan for you the first time as it felt a bit daunting doing it alone when I'd never done that before! But basically you put barrier cream on your hands and soles of your feet and go into a booth, press the button and hey presto! The tan was pretty even but my hands and feet were very orange, the staff didn't emphasise the importance of the barrier cream enough I don't think as you must have to put a LOT on to stop your hands and feet going orange! Overall, though, it is a great place with very helpful and friendly staff. Would definitely go back there if I had a special occasion I wanted a fake tan for!

BINGO. Hamam was easy to get to, the woman on the phone was delightful and got us booked for two perfect services for each of us, sparing no detail, and we were in. We arrived, and don't be put off if you have to ring the bell - door's locked, and it might take a moment, but we had baths booked and scrub/massage, so we knew we were getting in, but we had no idea how cool and memorable this would be. You could tell there were regulars, happy looking women just in pants, sitting in twos in the steam, or around the common table, rinsing or awaiting scrub or foam; pre-massage. The women who work there are all speaking Turkish, economizing on the pleasantries, because, baby, they are really delivering the goods. Women are getting polished with Turkish coffee, lathered with foam delivered from some kind of oversized cheesecloth tube. It's dynamite. If you've opted for a massage, then a massage you shall get, in a private room in most cases, and very thoughtful, personalized, and leaving you with a very dreamy relaxed yet energized feeling. I had a burn on my hand that my therapist was so concerned about she made that the focus of her care, making lots of recommendations about how to treat it, and lots of extra effort. Anyway, it was a 5 star experience in an affordable, authentic, really sweet caring package. They care about what they do, and they do it I think every day of the week - broken into Mens days and Womens days -- I'd do it weekly if I lived in London, not gonna lie.
