Ocean Sushi - Tokyo Roll

For you U.S. Travelers, Mazatlan Mexico is the seafood Mecca and the shrimp capital of the Western…read moreHemisphere. While this place has over 1000 reviews with nearly 5 stars, it has no review yet on Yelp since Yelp isn't an international review site, although I have a lot of reviews from Mazatlan and Puerto Vallajarta (PV). Blue Ocean Sushi is located on the newly renovated (and quite fantastic I might add with free wi-fi down the entire 13 mile stretch) Malecon which is the longest Malecon in the world. Mazatlan like other major cities has tons of great resaurants but you don't find many sushi places. Being this place is just 2 blocks from the condo we gave it a go.ou' First, don't be intimidated as this is NOT a tourist spot although I am sure many go in here. They do not speak English but if you use your handy Google translate they are very patient and you'll get great service. The first thing I noticed sitting upstairs overlooking the Malecon was the jalepeño soy sauce. OH I love jalepeño! The soy sauce was not spicy surprisingly but had a nice subtle jalepeño flavor. You also get your ginger and wasabi. I first ordered the octopus hand roll. This is not your chewy strips of tako found in many U.S. places, but huge chucks of octopus. That's right, the whole tentacle. The rice was soft and sticky and although not like the best sushi rice you have had, it does a fine job holding together and making great rolls. We then ordered two rolls consisting of the Cuahu and Tokyo Roll. The Cuahu roll had octopus mixed with spicy mayo (not really spicy) and tempura shrimp in the center with some cucumber and avocado. The Tokyo Roll was equally as good topped with shredded artificial crab but I forgot what was in the center as I zero'd in on the Spicy Octopus Salad (yeah I like Octopus if you can't tell) and it was fantastic. Nice big pieces of octopus filled the platter, mixed perfectly with just the right amount of spicy mayo. Our waiter Alejandro was a nice young man and although he did not speak any English he always had a smile. I do speak enough Spanish that it's never a problem for me in Mexico but make sure to have your translator handy if you come here. The food definitely is worth it! 4 stars.
