Our cruise stop in Mazatlán was relatively short, so every meal felt like an opportunity to experience something memorable. Being in one of Mexico's most famous coastal cities, seafood seemed like the obvious choice, so we decided to have lunch at El Muchacho Alegre, a restaurant right on the waterfront. I have to admit, my first impression was excellent. The location is hard to beat. Sitting outdoors with the ocean directly in front of us, watching the waves roll in while enjoying the sea breeze, it felt exactly like the kind of coastal Mexico experience you imagine before arriving. The view alone almost made me think that even if the food turned out to be average, the setting would make the visit worthwhile. We ordered the grilled seafood platter and a seafood margarita, both of which sounded promising on the menu. After all, when you're dining in a city known for its seafood, expectations naturally rise. The seafood platter looked impressive when it arrived. The plate was loaded with a variety of seafood and certainly made a great first impression. Unfortunately, the actual flavors didn't quite match the presentation. Several items seemed overcooked, leaving the seafood a little dry, and the seasoning was fairly ordinary. More disappointing was that a few of the seafood items carried a noticeable fishy taste. That was probably the most frustrating part of the meal. The ingredients themselves appeared to have potential, but the preparation never allowed their natural sweetness and freshness to shine through. Sitting beside the ocean, you almost expect that one bite that reminds you why fresh coastal seafood can be so special. That moment never really arrived. The seafood margarita followed a similar pattern. It looked colorful and appealing when it was served, but the flavors felt surprisingly flat. The different seafood components never came together in a particularly memorable way, and in some bites the fishiness was even more noticeable. As the meal went on, I found myself spending more time looking at the ocean than thinking about the food. Around us, people were enjoying drinks, taking photos, and relaxing with friends and family. The atmosphere was lively and enjoyable, and I began to understand why the restaurant is so popular. Many visitors probably come here for the setting, the views, and the overall experience rather than for exceptional seafood. Viewed as a beachfront restaurant where you can relax, enjoy the scenery, and spend a pleasant afternoon, it succeeds. Staff was friendly and very willing to make do with some one-semester high-school level Spanish we had in our group, and there were plenty of tables at this amazing by-the-beach spot. There aren't any walls or windows to get in your way: views were really great (though I couldn't decide whether to wear sunglasses for the views, or take them off to see indoors). The food was good. The tostadas were crispy, and the tacos were superb. The marlin came as a recommendation from a local friend, and was probably the best thing we tried. We got a molcajete, which was visually appealing and the oysters were my wife's favorites. I got a cocohorchata, which was both larger (in size) than I expected and rounded the meal off well. My biggest downside is the live band went around playing at various tables (they ask if you want them to play), and it's really loud. Random restaurant we walked two miles to get to from our cruise port stop. Pros: the food was delicious. The staff was super friendly despite us not speaking Spanish-- we were able to make do with two menus, one Spanish and one English, and some high school level language that we'd mostly forgotten. Cons: they charged us for food that didn't come. We had ordered a couple extra tacos on top of our large party order, and later when they didn't show up, we flagged down a waitress and asked about it. She insisted that we had only ordered 5 tacos, not 7, and that we got everything.. but then the receipt showed we were charged for 7, which we unfortunately didn't realize until we'd left. :( The live Banda was... annoying, honestly, because they also had speakers for music on. If it was just the live music, it would've been fine, but they had radio music playing full volume AND the live band, and it was hard to hear ourselves think with the cross sounds. My son, parents, brother, aunt, and uncles both came along on our trip to visit my sister in law. We really enjoyed the ambiance and staff. They were very nice and came regularly to ask if we were good or needed anything. If you come to Mazatlan you have to come here. I am unable to rate the food or service for this establishment because my friends and I (four women) were denied entry. Standing outside of restaurant, it appeared the atmosphere inside was vibing. It was around 9pm on a Wednesday when the situation occurred. We were told by the hostess that that we had to order food. We had already eaten dinner elsewhere and all we wanted to do is sit around, have drinks and listen to some Banda music. I had raved about El Muchacho Alegre because of their fun and energetic atmosphere. The last time I had gone to El Muchacho was August 2023 for a birthday celebration. I believe El Muchacho's, "have to buy food" policy is a very stupid policy. I believe customers can bring any restaurant lots of revenue from ordering drinks alone. Came here to dinner with my family. The wait time was about 30-45 mins, they have you wait to the left of the restaurant on a outside patio. Before you come here just know this is definitely a party restaurant with live Banda playing all throughout the night non stop. Once seated it was so loud I could barely hear what my waiter had to say. We ordered drinks, in which the waiter was up selling us and convinced us into ordering the drinks he was promoting. Upsetting considering he hyped them up to be so good when truly all I wanted was a Paloma. I ordered a Michelada as well which lacked flavor it tasted like pure beer. The menu had a wide variety of cold and hot seafood options. My family all ordered shrimp dishes. We also ordered they're family special called "the parrillada" which had about 6 different types of shrimps. Once the food came out I had to wait about 10 minutes for the waiter to bring over tortillas and salsas. Which I fell like that could've been avoided if asked when ordering. The food over all was good but over priced for what it is. This restaurant is definitely more for ambiance than food. So if you're looking to get drunk to some live entertainment this is the place for you! They are strict, asking me politely to put a shirt on even though we were on a beachfront environment. In addition to the constant band/dj music there's also steady flow of dude blowing trumpet and trombone right in your face. That said they locals love and thrive on ear shattering music directly into the ear drum. We took a table upstairs as our fragile bland American senses can't handle the ambience. Despite being a seemingly tourist trap this place serves surprisingly good food. The gem is their pescado zarandeado (grilled whole fish). By god the flavor is out of this world. I've had grilled fish from plethora restaurants ranging from hole in the wall to the extravagant, this is by far one of of not the best grilled sea bass I've ever had. He was amazing that's why I gave it 1 star but once he left no one attended us. My family was in Mazatlan as one of the stops on the cruise. We had intended on seeing the divers but the driver didn't understand us and dropped us off 30 minutes from the terminal at a strip of the beach. After sight seeing for a bit, we had another driver pick us up and asked him for a taco spot. He brought us to El Muchacho Alegne. We didn't have any wait in getting a table of eight. It took a bit of time to get the food but the drinks came quick. I ordered a lemonade thinking it was in a glass bottle but it came with ice in a goblet. It was hot(!) that day so I risked the "don't eat or drink the ice" and drank it. I was fine after. Maybe they get enough tourists that it's bagged filtered ice. Everyone else got bottled soda or beer. Worth noting though my GF ordered a michelada and it automatically came as a tamarind base in a goblet and they poured the beer in after at the table. I've only known them to be tomato based! The fish taco was dry and did not come with salsa or sauce. The grilled octopus taco came out more tostada like with the thick blanket of cheese hardening slightly and making it unable to fold. Not necessarily a bad thing, don't get me wrong! Perfectly cooked octopus chopped into bite size chunks; a perfect blend of savory, crunchy, and cheesy goodness. My husband said his grilled bacon wrapped shrimp were spectacular as well. The kids got swept up in getting the kids meals which were nothing to write home to outside of them being decently priced. Lol I noticed the majority of the diners were locals and not tourists. Tourist trap. We were wondering the area on our cruise stop. The place looked like it was busy enough to be decent food. They didn't allow you in the restaurant without a mask which they sold one to us for $1. I'm all for safety and precaution; but I just used it for 15 seconds (while walking to our table). The waiter was pushing for us to try the lobster tacos. He claimed it was their special item. He forgot to mention it was about $20 for 2 tacos. The tacos were blah... flavorless and dry. This place was recommended by a family member. Decided to try this place out. It is a popular spot in Mazatlan, MX. My dish was the Camarones a La Diabla. It came with a side of rice and steamed vegetables. White Mexican Rice which had mixed vegetables and it was pretty good. The steamed vegetables were pretty good. However, the shrimp with the chili sauce had no flavor whatsoever. I didn't under stand how expensive this place was with the small portions of food provided with no flavor. Although, the atmosphere/vibe was awesome. Drinks were definitely delicious. To hang out and have a few drinks I definitely recommend. We were a group of nine. Must say the service was awesome! Finally made it here after driving by here the past 10 years saying "I have to eat here". After reading some bad reviews I thought "I still have to give it a shot". Let me just comment on a few things. 1. English is spoken but not as much as other places as a lot of locals eat here. 2. They do have English menus but you have to ask for them. I speak enough Spanish I never have a problem communicating here. 3. They do take credit cards 4. Don't be uninformed on the exchange rate here and if you use cash make sure you use pesos as everyone uses a lower exchange rate than the national rate but we are talking 2 pesos less so it's negligible. 5, LOUD LIVE MUSIC! I happen to love music but the drummer banging next to my ear was a little rough at times but it was fun. Oscar our waiter was excellent and friendly. I had a Mojito which was excellent with tons of mint which I like very much. My daughter had of Mai Tai that she said was excellent. For starters I had the stuffed pepper taco which was a large pepper stuffed with cheese and shrimp served on a fresh corn tortilla. The tortillas are made fresh as you order so they come hot, soft, and tasty! Next I had the Mahi Mahi taco. I was very disspointed they did not have Al Pastor tacos. They are on the menu but they said they were out. Bummer. For the main course I had the Octopus which was one of the best Pulpo dishes I have had here. Soft as butter and tasty with butter and garlic in a hot skillet. My daughter and I also tried the chicken fajitas which are not on the menu but I asked them to make me some and they were happy to do it. Several recent reviewers complained about a few things I didn't experience. Our meal was hot, everything was fresh and when we said we were done, they cleared the table and wiped it clean so we could just chat. Unlike impatient American restuarants grabbing your plate anx shoving a bill in your face, here in Mazatlan, until you ask for your check, you probably won't get one. They would only give bottled water, I just wanted a a glass without the single use plastic. Then paying the bill took longer than getting the food. They asked for our parking tickets..then they gave them back. We assumed they were paid but we couldn't get out of parking lot. Turns out you DO need to pay separately at a booth, they just take the ticket to give a discount on ticket.
