Several months ago I was on a little road trip and one of our goals was to stock up on some cheaper-than-we're-used-to booze for a friend's upcoming wedding. The driver didn't really want to linger in California for long, so we stopped at a couple of spots just over the border, and decided that the Liquor Barn was the cheaper of the two. The employee or owner was very friendly and helpful, and made some great recommendations about which liquor to buy for the wedding, and made sure we grabbed boxes instead of individual bottles. It takes time and money (gas - ouch!) to drive down to California and it's easy to find people willing to take it off our hands later, so why NOT buy in bulk? On April 3rd, 2020 (yesterday) I was driving though Yreka and staying the night, so I stopped in to Liquor Land as I'd heard they had good selection and prices on scotch, and good customer service. All true. I bought 6 bottles for 1,700+. Simply stated one bottle was marked $499 (I took several photo's to share with a friend, including this $499 bottle) I got back to my hotel and later looked at the receipt and noticed that I was charged 899.00 for the bottle that was marked 499.00. I called the store and was told the price was 899, they didn't mention that it was marked 499. The next day I went into the store with the bottle, the receipt, and the photo on my camera. On the shelf where the bottle was there was a new sticker over the $499 price, with the $899 price on it. I spoke to AJ again and laid out the situation. He made a few calls over 20 minutes or so. My solution was that they either honor the $499 posted price (there was no dispute from AJ that this was the posted price when the purchase was made), or take the bottle back. After the phone calls AJ's solution was to give me $100 and stick me with their mistake. They would not take the bottle back. They ended up giving me a bottle listed at $119, and sticking me with the rest of their error. My mistake was not being more diligent in looking the receipt over at the time of purchase. I've been driving home to WA for a few weeks, I was tired, and just wasn't paying attention. Their mistake was in not honoring their posted price - after admitting it was their error. I won't go here again as they expect customers to pay for their employees mistakes. They said a very large percentage of their business comes from OR and WA. I suggest taking your business elsewhere. I would change my mind on this if they honored the marked price. I will cross post this on Malt Maniacs and other platforms that I frequent. Glenn read more

After buying a couple thousand dollars in liquor here over the last four years (including hoarding dozens of bottles of mid-level rum, whiskey, and vodka against the apocalypse), I am finally motivated to write my first review. Unfortunately, it is not a particularly positive one. The new truck stop has good alcohol prices but not as broad a selection as Liquor Land, so I stopped back here to look for sherry (hopefully Harvey's Bristol Cream). All I could see on the shelves was Dry Sack, so I asked the one person there, the proprietor himself, if that was the only sherry they had. He instantly dismissed me with the old "what we have is what's out there", and would not assist me further. We went back and forth a few times, with me patiently explaining that, as the long-time owner, he was supposed to know items what they carry, and him irritatedly telling me "I'm not hiding anything in the back! What we have is what's out there!". I said this was not an acceptable answer, and reminded him that, behind the mask, he might not even recognize me as the guy who bought over a dozen bottles of the $55 Nelson's Blood Pusser's Rum in the last couple of years alone, among many other items, and told him that I would take my business to the new place. Other times I recall being accosted within a minute of entering the shop by one of the other employees, offering to help me find whatever I'm looking for, or even recommending various whiskeys to me. I would have said that this is a 4-star establishment, but with the bad attitude from the rude, impatient owner, I'm giving a 2-star rating -- and I will go to one of the other 5 liquor outlets in the north county from now on. read more

I like coffee. I like coffee lots. Unfortunately, a side effect of liking coffee lots means lots of peeing. And liking coffee lots while driving long distances means lots of pulling over to pee. Well, at least that way I don't have to worry about running out of gas right? And while I'm at it? Might as well pick up some liquor while it's still easy to purchase in CA, vs the puritanical methodology one must go through in WA to buy spirits. I mean, seriously, why are we only allowed to buy liquor in government run stores with weird hours? Last call ain't until 2am. I like the freedom CA gives me of being able to head into a liquor store and pick something up to continue the party after the bars close. So with that in mind, I figured I should stop to relieve myself, get some gas, walk the dog, and pick up enough alcohol that I won't need to go shopping for it again until the next time I decide to drive a long distance to visit family with my doggy. Liquor Barn has a huge selection and some great prices--Johnny Walker Green was $45. It was $90 down in L.A. And the fellows working there were super helpful; they grabbed a couple empty cartons and even helped me carry my boxes of liquor out to the car. You read that right. Boxes of liquor. I bought a case of vodka, as that always seems to be the most popular liquor to mix with. Restocked on tequila, including some Hasong's that a friend recommended. And got a bottle of Jack for when a couple of musician friends are over, as that's their preference. Hmm... If I'm not careful, City of Seattle is going to require me to get a liquor license.... read more

We hit Yreka as a stayover point in our long trip to the Bay Area. The first things we saw when we got off exit 776 were 1) The Liquor Barn and 2) a nice looking Mexican restaurant. Correctly prioritizing, we hit the Liquor Barn first. About 30 minutes later, we were still wandering around in happy shock and amazement at the prices -- half the cost of liquor in these communist Washington State run stores!! I got the huge jug of Wild Turkey as I could finally afford to spring for it, and a bottle of Woodford Reserve which we couldn't even afford to look at much less buy up here. The man(owner?) was very nice and helpful, and didn't seem surprised at how happy we were in his store (being from Washington). He even explained the latest liquor initiative that passed up here and how it will really work once implemented. I wish we had an excuse to go back through Yreka again soon! We bought a $10 bottle of wine that is normally quite good. This bottle, however, was clearly bad. We each took a sip and had to spit it out. When we brought the bottle back (with our receipt), the owner took a sniff, said it didn't smell like vinegar, and wouldn't refund our money. We spent over $100 on that trip, but he treated us like we were pond scum. Sad. We learned our lesson, though, and neither us nor our friends will go there again. read more

I bought a sour/bad bottle of wine here and tried to return it. Cork spoilage happens...however, the clerk refused a refund and disagreed with my assessment saying it was my "bad taste". This unique liquor store has literally every kind of beverage you could possibly image. If he doesn't have it, he will definitely order it for you. I have recently been to liquor stores in larger cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Boston. Liquor Land in Yreka, CA has an even better selection than any of these other liquor stores. The owner was able to special order my favorite Irish whiskey (Hyde 10 year single malt Irish whiskey), just for me, that I've only been able to buy when I visit a special whiskey shop in San Francisco. He also showed me other unique Irish whiskeys I have never seen before and provided tasting advice.
