This is a nice little yarn shop located in Portland, Maine. They have a nice selection and at different price range. This shop does offer a restroom for their patrons only. While visiting there, the staff assisted a woman that brought in a lace tablecloth and they have a separate room where you can lay your item out for help. The only issue could be parking, but each time we've been, we have always been able to find a spot on the street. read more

Very disappointed with this shop. I purposely drove to Portland to visit this store and had the worst customer service. There were 2 people behind the counter, just sitting, knitting, and talking about personal stuff. I'm not sure if this shop is just counting on Internet sales, but I can't even get myself to order from them just knowing how customer service is. If you are visiting Portland, ME, this is definitely worth a stop. Yes, the have all the quality yarn companies you know and love but to my pleasant surprise they have their own sock yarn made in Maine! This takes vacation yarn to a whole new level. A sitting nook allows shoppers to browse pattern books or the non-knitting companion a respite from the hilly brick sidewalks. Hope to shop here again next time I'm in the area. read more

Not a fan.....Went in to ask for help to CO 20 stitches After hemming and hawing, they offered me a $10, 15 min consult. It's not about the $ so much as the customer service. Awful. I go through fits and spurts when it comes to knitting. I will go through periods of knitting 10 hats and two sweaters, and then I won't touch the needles at all for a year or two. I can't really explain it??? Right now though, I am on a knitting roll! After finishing 8 hats this time, I decided I was ready to take a small step forward with my knitting skills. I needed someone to listen to what I COULD do and suggest what might be the next step. I was basically ready for a challenge and any time I feel this way, I head directly to the KnitWit Yarn Shop on Congress Street. Yes they sell beautiful natural yarns in an amazing array of colors as well as any kind of needle or other piece of equipment you might need, but the reason I head to KnitWit every time I feel stuck is that they are staffed by expert knitters who really listen and respond with such insight that it can sometimes feel like a therapy session. I walked in on Saturday so stuck and was immediately welcomed by a master knitter with an open ear and a warm heart. She really listened as I explained to her in every boring detail my knitting history and I wrapped it up by asking her if she had any suggestions for me. She smiled at me and suggested the most perfect shawl pattern that was mostly built on skills I already had with just the perfect amount of new challenge. I really felt heard. The ONLY reason that I am giving KnitWits 4 instead of 5 stars is that their yarn collection is quite expensive, which can be tricky if you are a new knitter and prone to a lot of mistakes. On the other hand, if you buy patterns and yarn from them, they are always willing to help if you knit yourself into an SOS moment. read more

I walked in, only customer. No signs anywhere about needing masks if vaccinated. Only person there was on the phone about volleyball, so obviously not focused on selling. When he finally got off the phone he asked what I needed and let me go on god ten minutes before telling me I had to leave if I didn't have a mask. We were more than ten feet apart and no one else was there-and I've had my vaccine and booster shots. Obviously doesn't care about business. Maybe he should try volleyball professionally. read more

What a lovely little shop!! While out sightseeing, my eye caught sight of this local yarn shop. As a yarn/knitting/crocheting enthusiast, I HAD to grab a few skeins for the road (plus it was a birthday gift for myself). Upon walking in, I was greeted by, who I believe is the shop owner, Anna. First off, I asked about her offerings of local yarns (I try to snag some when I'm out travelling) and she was kind enough to give me a mini yarn tour around the shop. We also discussed our favorite knitting needles (Knitters' Pride represent!) and it was just a really pleasant time overall. There's such an amazing selection of yarn and beautiful color ways that it was really hard to choose! I ended up picking up some yarn from Malabrigo and Quince&Co (a local yarn from Maine!) after perusing all the shop had to offer. If I wasn't pressed for time, I would have definitely purchased some knitting and crocheting notions, but hopefully I'll be back here someday. I most certainly would recommend this shop to other crafters who are in the Portland, ME area in a heartbeat! read more

Lovely place! I do not sew, knit, or crochet but come from a family of crafty ladies. So I wanted to find some yarn & perhaps a few little other items for my talented mother. She always seems quite thrilled at new fabric or yarn. The lady working was so helpful to me. She advised me on how much yarn to purchase for what I know my mother likes to work on. As well as showed me some other items that would make fantastic gifts for my mother's sewing addiction. I left there knowing I had done well on gift shopping for mom. A wonderful place! read more

EXCELLENT selection of yarns for such a tiny place. Staff was super helpful and nice, let me take my time, but answered all my questions and gave great advice/suggestions. Prices are typical of boutique yarn stores, or a little higher even, but the quality is apparent, they don't have cheapy yarn brands, only the best. They will order yarn for you in bulk if there is not enough on the shelf, so that's great for sweater/afghan knitters. Walking distance from the Shipyard Brewery, so while hubby is going on the brewery tour, let yourself indulge in yarny goodness. read more

KnitWit is a nice little yarn shop that I made a point of visiting while I was in town. There was a great selection of beautiful yarn that I wanted to cuddle and squish! It's a smallish store, but there's a nice array of different yarns and the best part is that they introduced me to The Fibre Company and I'm a huge fan now! The prices seemed reasonable for what you get - this isn't a super-saver acrylic blend type of hobby shop but is instead a purveyor of quality yarns made with (from what I saw) mostly natural materials - wool, silk, alpaca, etc. - which is exactly what I love! And the colors...oh the colors! The nice guy at the register was very helpful and tolerant of my incessant yarn-babble. I hope to visit again! read more

KnitWit is a warm and inviting space with an extremely helpful and friendly owner. She offered the perfect amount of help and space while I putzed around her lovely store and set me up with a great substitute yarn for the cardigan pattern I'd been eyeing. I also spotted a colorful mitten sample made from Manos that inspired me to make some of my own. It's great to see finished products from skilled knitters that show you how yarns knit up. This store has great samples and binders full of patterns to choose from. I highly recommend this store and would suggest that you go in with ideas using Quince and Co., The Fibre Company, and Berrocco. She does carry other great yarns, but it looked heaviest on these three. Enjoy! read more

It's very organized and the space is welcoming. They also have sale bins (which is nice because their yarns are high quality). I visited this store in October And bought some yarn We are not from Maine and was visiting relatives. i wanted to exchange for a different color and purchase 10 skeins I need for a new project. The young woman helping me was very nice, left new color wanted to exchange on counter while I was looking for new purchase. in the meantime a young man approached me and said I could not return was past the 60 days. I explained I was from out of town and just wanted to exchange not return, and make new purchase. He was very rude and pointed out on receipt said no returns. I really enjoyed my visit to this shop while in Portland recently. It's on Congress Street about a half mile from the heart of the Old Port area. There are a few indie shops on the block although I didn't stop into the others. The shop had plenty of yarn and a nice variety of brands. Malabrigo and Kinfolk were in stock along with a more affordable brand (whose name I cannot remember but it was nice yarn in so many colors and weights!) I could look at yarn for hours and the owner was helpful but not overbearing. Will definitely return when I am in Portland again. read more

I am a big fan of this shop. The shop has a a great layout with a variety of yarns, notions, and tools. What makes this shop great is the customer service. I visited this shop while visiting Portland in January. I bought an emergency needle, mine broke the day before, and handmade button for a cowl. About a week later, I realized that button was perfect for the cardigan I had just completed. So I called the shop asking if they would send more. The next day, they were in the mail with minimal shipping. Less than a dollar!! Sadly, one button was not usable and they shipped me a new button asap at no cost. Super impressive selections, very very nice, knowledgeable, and helpful owner. This is now officially my favorite yarn shop, I just wish it was closer to Boston. I walked in as a completely clueless beginner, in need of guidance. Since it was very busy I assumed I would wander around a bit and return when it was less busy to ask my simple questions (like...where do I start?). The store is beyond warm and lovely, but overwhelming when you don't know where to begin. I was approached immediately by a lovely salesperson and she guided me through the steps for my first project. She was patient and very informative! I have been shopping there for years, even travel over an hour to get there. On my last visit 2/20/21 I purchased yarn and needles. I asked if they could possibly wind it for me they have always done it in the past for a $5 fee. The man working said they were busy and it would be 2 hours. There was no one in the store except me. I was extremely dissappointed in such poor customer service. I will never shop in this store again. The yarn I purchased was a tangled mess when I tried to wind it by hand, extremely frustrating to say the least. I won't shop there again because of the laziness if the staff. read more

This place is so cute! I personally am not a knitter but we were stopping in Portland on our way up north for vacation and my sister wanted to pick up a few things so she could work on a scarf.
