Both of our children attended classes and took lessons at "HB2" throughout their formative years. They learned resilience, focus, grit and self defense, but always in a caring and family focused atmosphere. HB2 is welcoming to everyone, and they seem to make everyone feel at home. Classes are available for kids, teens and adults, and they have an equally balanced gender mix. No experience is required to get started, even for adults. Sensei Elias is a great person and a fantastic teacher--encouraging, fun, and (you will see at an instructor tournament) a heck of an athlete himself. WE really loved the studio and the teachers and main Sensei Ryan. The class was super well orchestrated. The kids listened to the instructors with precision. I was impressed on day one with the respect the young students showed towards the new students. All of them displayed leadership in introducing themselves all on their own. even when a student got out of line, they were dealt with the correct measure of discipline. One of the worst experiences in martial arts we have ever had. Son has done years of martial arts, Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, Krav Maga, wanted to try this place to hang with one of his new friends that just moved here from out of town. He wasn't really stoked on the instructor, if you could call him that, the classes were not very technical, more like self defense for women than Karate. Basically not worth the $395 per month. Well, now it takes a turn towards rip-off street!!! Dont let this used car salesman sell you (3) months of classes for $895, it is an absolute rip-off!!! When my Son and I sat down with Elias to review the STUPID contract they make you sign for just 30 days of class, we asked well what if he doesn't like the classes after say 30 days? Elias said you have to sign the agreement to come to the class, but I will try to help you out if you dont like it a refund some of your money. 45 days later, after 30 days of class and 2 weeks of illness, when my Son emailed to attempt to get his hard earned money back (he earns and pays for his martial art classes), he was told by Elias, the used car salesman, that he never said he would give him his money back if he wasn't happy. This was not the case, my Son and I were both told that after 30 days, if we weren't happy he would consider refunding us some of the $895. Bottom line is instead of honoring his word and just saying no, he called us both liars, said he never made that statement and then called me a bad Dad for having my Son deal with the situation. This guy Elias is a clown, shouldn't be leading anyone in anything, and is a disgrace to Karate. AVOID THIS FAKE karate place at all costs!! Dont sign their agreement!! Go to a Jiu Jitsu class instead and learn something usefull. read more

My son has been going to Z Ultimate for almost three years and it has been a wonderful experience. He has progressed under the tutelage of Ryan and Mr. Lloyd, Nick and the other very good instructors. These folks put the emphasis on the kids, having fun, being responsible, respectful and good citizens. They work with the parents to keep the kids on the "Straight & Narrow," and should be praised for jobs well done. If your looking for a Cobra Kai dojo with "Put em' in a body bag," mentality this is not your place. Don't be fooled however, there is a emphasis placed on age appropriate training, and they will be both tough and fair. Karate is expensive. There's no way around that for most people, it is an expensive sport. But when compared to what you get, the number of group lessons, combined with included private lessons, it becomes much more palatable. And when you take into account Mr. Lloyd, his son Ryan and all the others, their level of caring, community and dedication to these kids, it becomes an invaluable experience and value! We have personally been the recipient or recipient of their kindness and giving spirit. Z Ultimate is always very competitive in tournaments, and you couldn't ask for a better Father & Son team. Although both are both very accomplished Black Belts, winning isn't everything or the main focus of their studio. Their dojo has been in the community at the same location for almost twenty years and I enthusiastically recommend them to anyone looking to get their children, themselves or others into Karate. David and Ryan Lloyd along with Sensei Nick Hirsch are wonderful martial arts instructors and simply put just good people. They teach the Ultimate system of kempo which consists of practical, classical and tactical forms of self defense. I along with two of my daughters (age 20 and 11) have been attending workouts for almost a year. I have noticed a transformation in both of my daughters who were kind of shy and not the most athletic persons into well adjusted ninjas. Both of my daughters really enjoy the group lessons which are three times of week. Classes are divided into children, young adults and adults. The Lloyds go out of their way to make sure that everyone of all ages is welcome. Not only will you get in shape, but you will be able to defend yourself and have a good time. I highly recommend that you simply watch one of the group classes and you will observe the positive energy that flows from the dojo into your children and your lives. Martial arts training can be somewhat expensive but the cost is well worth it. read more

This is really a 5 star review, but I hear those are often filtered out. Z Ultimate HB 2 has been a great experience for our 9 year old son. He has been attending lessons for 18 months, and loves the dojo and the staff. He is gaining flexibility and dexterity, learning self defense, and also learning lessons about ethics and honor. We did city rec Karate for a while, which was OK, but the real difference here is the excellence of the instructors, and their commitment to reaching every kid . Ryan and Nick are fantastic teachers, customizing private lessons for the ability level and learning style of each kid, and involving all students in the group lessons. These guys take pride in what they do, and are in it for the right reasons. The atmosphere here is non-intimidating and caring, but the classes are filled with challenges-- both physical and mental. There is a reason this dojo has been in the same location for 20 years, and is thriving. Highest recommendation. read more

Joining Z-Ultimate has been one of the best decisions I have ever made for my two kids! Both my kids have experienced so much growth. My son has gained strength, flexibility, balance and quickness. I was looking for a sport for my daughter who has some "attention" issues and I was thrilled when she asked to start taking karate lessons. This studio came highly recommended so we decided to give it a try. The instructors Master Lloyd, his son Ryan, and Nick were so welcoming and encouraging. Here we are nearly 3 years later and she still loves attending classes. She has gained physical strength, as well as emotional strength, made new friends, and is more outgoing that she was a few years back. She loved it so much that my other daughter and my husband started taking the classes! On to the details: the staff is knowledgeable, kind, encouraging, but also will challenge your kid to step it up a notch. They are also great working with kids with disabilities. The dojo is very clean, and has easy accessibility. I would take off one star, because the parking lot is a bit congested at class time, but that really isn't their fault. read more

My twins started learning karate when they were 5 years old, simply to help them concentrate better and follow directions. After only 18 months, they confidently walked into the dojo knowing what was expected of them. Now nearly 3 years into their martial arts training, they are learning more advanced skills and techniques that foster self-awareness and confidence. They are more respectful of others because the instructor's expect nothing less. They are more confident in their abilities because of the rigorous tests undergone to reach their next belt level. The instructors are phenomenal: Masters Dave and Ryan (father and son 5th degree black belts) and Sensei Nick's technical knowledge and mastery is astounding. They fully engage, challenge and encourage each of their students, whether child, teen or adult. My kids are so fond of them that they want to do well and seek out their encouragement and praise. They were having so much fun that I joined too! The students at "HB2" have a great camaraderie; it's a safe and encouraging community in which to learn something new, make a mistake and try it again. Bi-annual tournaments with other Z Ultimate dojo's give you the opportunity to compete and challenge yourself even further and meet fellow martial artists from all over the Southwest who share in your passion for studying the martial arts.
