Since I keep seeing views on my previous review, I feel a need to update potential clients about this business so here is an updated review: Trust is everything in business. I wrote an awesome review back in 7/2023, halfway through the time we attended the gym. We started our membership in May. In June, my husband put in a 60-day notice with the front desk to end our membership by August 2023 since our kids were going to start school in September and our schedules didn't match with practice times at HB Ultimate Training Center. The lady at the front desk said she entered it in and that we were good. We had had every intention of going back to the gym again the following summer. We said our goodbyes to the other kids in August and thought it had gone smoothly. In Sept I checked my bank statement and found I had been charged for TWO more months. I was very upset because we did our due diligence in letting them know TWO MONTHS AHEAD OF TIME, like it stated in the contract. Suddenly the typically nice admins were not so nice, claiming we never told them (and since it was a verbal request, there was no time stamp to prove they had said they took care of it). I went in two different times, in person, without my children, to talk to them about this matter. The general manager claimed that the admin had entered it in wrong (instead of cancelling the membership, she had frozen the membership), so it was her fault, however he also claimed that their billing company are sharks and wouldn't reverse the charges even if he wanted to. So he suggested we go back to attending jiu jitsu lessons for 2 months, supposedly free of charge, that he could probably manage to get us back one month's worth of membership only, and then we could decide to sign up with them again if we wanted to. NO. After pulling this stunt, we would NEVER go back to this business. They eventually gave us back one month's worth of membership, I'll given them that. But unfortunately, it seems like it's a common tactic for other gyms too; it's so easy to sign up but so difficult to cancel. I would highly recommend for anyone that signs up with them to have the front desk or the general manager sign a typed document that they have received a request to freeze/end their membership to prevent from being unfairly charged more months. Also, if you do sign up, do it at the beginning of the month rather than the end of the month. They had told me initially that it would be prorated, but when I was trying to cancel my membership, and I told the general manager that they had charged me for an extra month, and he informed me that they had charged us for the entire month of May. Amazing place to train to your heart's content. Originally came in because Paul reached out after I saw an ad online, he convinced me to really give the Gracie jiu-jitsu classes a shot based on my goals at the time. From that point forward, I'd be making an understatement if I said that the coaching and content provided by the head coach Dean Wellen was anything less than transformative. In just a few months over my 1 year of training mark, I was able to put in the work to really learn the Gracie system, and test to earn my first belt. I'm still training as much as I can manage, and study the content of the online modules relentlessly. Honest opinion? They will try to charge you for two months after you leave, not to mention an initiation fee and mandatory GI purchase, every tactic to get you locked in but lack to deliver as promised, so you will inevitably find yourself in my position when you 'ultimately' decide to leave and most likely have to change your card or bank account. Staff is disrespectful by large and gym is dirty and under-equipped. I wished to to avoid writing a negative review since i enjoyed working with Jesse the intermediate Jiu Jitsu coach, but my overall impression of the gym is 1 star, not to mention you can join UFC gym down the street, state of the art facility with full gym access and Martial Arts classes taught by coral belt instructors at 1/3 of the $$$, not too sure where the overwhelming sense of pride and entitlement comes from, I've been told some pro fighters occasionally visit here! read more

Our family started here when I bought a bjj Groupon voucher for my husband and son. They both went in without any prior mma experience. Both of them instantly fell in love. We became family in a short month. Coach jesse is the kids bjj coach and truly is someone made to teach children. He's patient, kind, and stern when needed to keep the kids in line and to know boundaries for themselves and others. They have a big emphasis on teaching kids the skills to protect themselves from bullies. After watching them on the sideline, I decided to join for their kickboxing classes. This has been the best decision of my life. I've never been so consistently active in a gym. I have accountability, support, and amazing encouragement from all staff, coaches, and other members. This is an extremely family friendly and family oriented gym. You will never go unnoticed. If you haven't been in for a while, there is genuine concern, and if possible, they help with solutions. My son's friends were doing BJJ here and convinced my son to start as well. He loved it right away; Coach Jesse is amazing with the little ones both for instruction and discipline. The kids learn a lot about BJJ, wrestling, fitness and even some basic kickboxing while also learning how to stop bullies. There's classes for both young beginners and intermediate older kids. I can't recommend it enough. Even though I had never done any kind of kickboxing or jiu jitsu or any kind of mixed martial art outside of wrestling in high school after a couple weeks of watching I had to jump in to the adult classes myself. I had just been swimming and surfing and frankly was getting out of shape. I needed a challenge and now I'm addicted. All the coaches, Jeff, Jesse, both Steves, Kalani, Karlee, and Skylar have their own ways of challenging you and teaching you kickboxing skills and fitness skills in the bootcamps. After a few months of learning what to do on the bags I was able to qualify and start training with Tiki and Steve in the Muay Thai classes and have now found my favorite thing to do. Not only do you get real training from the professional fighters teaching the classes, the more advanced students and pro fighters in the classes help you with your skills as well. No one is trying to beat each other up either, its about learning. I haven't taken any BJJ classes yet, but I'm going to try that as well when my schedule permits The whole place is family oriented as well If you have your kids with you they are welcome to just hang out and even play if they're not taking classes as long as they stay in the right areas and aren't in the way. The people who train here are really a family as well. This was really demonstrable when Jeff made his pro fighting debut for LFA at the Costa Mesa Fairgrounds. Signed up for BJJ classes in Jan 2017 and here is it a year later in 2018 and I'm loving it! As a jiu jitsu practitioner, the important things to me are in order of importance: a) Top notch training from a black belt coach. The coach here is from AOJ and really knows his stuff! I'm a purple belt, and my game has improved immensely since I've joined. (CHECK!) b) A large variety of experienced & friendly training partners. Here you will find plenty of upper belts to roll with or if you are a beginner, finding people at your skill level is never a problem. (CHECK!) c) Plenty of mat space and clean facilities. A ton of mat space... seriously! I never have to worry about running out of mat space or bumping into other people because this gym is literally 2-4x the size of just about every other BJJ gym in the area! Plus, the facilities are kept very clean, with the mats cleaned daily! (CHECK!) The gym is relatively new, the BJJ program has been revamped and no matter what your BJJ level (from Black Belt to White Belt), you will find great value here. I appreciate that they don't play games and nickel and dime you with extra fees, like many other gyms in the area do. I didn't have to pay for stripes or belt promotions, which can cost $100's at other gyms. I came in with a groupon for Dad & son BJJ classes for a month and came in with one day left to expire, I was lazy and at my heaviest weight, a month went by and my son Loved the Kids BJJ classes with Jesse and i was shedding pounds from the adult BJJ classes, my wife joined us at the gym a couple months later and is taking Kick boxing and we all love it at HBUTC, couldn't ask for a better staff of trainers/ coaches and Amanda who handles just about everything, while having a big smile with a cheerful attitude, I recommend this gym for anyone and everyone, it's truly like a family here and everyone is welcomed with open arms. read more

So I've been training here for a couple years now and figured I'd post a review since they have recently moved and upgraded a shit ton of equipment. If you aren't familiar with this place, they used to be in a tiny little strip mall at the corner of Yorktown and Beach. They have since moved north on Beach and are at the beginning of the row of auto dealers, just past the El Pollo Loco I think. The difference between their old place and their new place is night and day. It looks like they invested a fortune in new mats, bags, and equipment, as well as hired a few new instructors and front desk folks. The new place is also about 10,000 square feet. It's huge and it's packed full of stuff. They have a full gym with free weights and machines, a boxing ring, an octagon, BJJ mats, Muay Thay mats, and about 30 or so brand new Muay Thai heavy bags. It's huge. There are a bunch of reasons why I give this gym 5 stars. First, I'll address the cleanliness: They tried their best to keep the old place clean, but the new place is spotless. After every BJJ class they spray the mats down and clean them. After every Kickboxing class they wipe down every bag with sanitized wipes, and every time I'm in there I see people cleaning the mirrors and bathrooms. Next, the quality of instructors: The trainers are all fighters. This isn't a place where the owner had one professional fight, and then opened a gym. Tiki was in the UFC for a few years. Tito Ortiz has trained here, and so has Rampage. Rob McCullough still fights professionally and trains here daily. They have a slew of other fighters showing up to train here as well. All the kickboxing instructors are fighters and they are very good at what they do. If you come to a kickboxing class, be prepared to get your ass kicked (not literally). If you come to a BJJ class, be prepared to learn. The other thing I like is the atmosphere. It's laid back. The instructors are all very cool. The front desk folks are not slimey salesmen. That is not to say they won't try and get you to sign up, but they are cool and will answer questions honestly. Are there better places to learn Muay Thai? I can think of one for sure. Are there better places to learn BJJ? I can't think of any that really outshine what Perez Jr. has going. Is there anywhere that offers everything this place offers? No. Overall value: This is the only gym in HB that is open 7 days a week. They offer kickboxing classes about 5 times throughout the day. The BJJ classes are twice a day, I think. Another thing with the BJJ classes; they are no Gi classes. That saves you about 140 bucks in buying a Gi, and it's more practical for those of us who don't want to compete in tournaments. This is the only place I know of in town that offers no gi classes that often. They also have MMA classes in the morning, and wrestling classes a couple days a week. They also have daily kids classes Monday through Thursday I believe. Another thing that you should think about. If you've read my previous reviews, I've complained about the billing of similar MMA places in town. Guess what? They do all their billing in house. No bullshit companies holding your contract over your head. IF you have problems with billing, you go in and talk to them and they take care of it there. This is the only place in town (that I know of) that operates completely in house. Fucking epic! With that said, there is a contract and there is a sign up fee. The good thing about this is that they offer specials all the time. HIt them up on Facebook; they normally post when they are having specials. In summary: Not only does the HBUTC have the most equipped gym in Huntington Beach, they are also the only gym open 7 days a week, and they are they offer more classes than any other gym in HB. They are also priced well below most, if not all gyms in the area. To top it off, there are always plenty of great looking women (dude's too) here when you work out. It's a very motivating environment when you come in. Not to say that it's a cheeseball meat market; it's anything but. It's a real gym without any of the bullshit that gyms like 24 hour fitness offer. There aren't any dudes in here looking at their muscles in the mirror and there aren't any women in full makeup looking to score their next man. People come here to work out. If this sounds good to you and you can handle the contract, I say you should come in, take a free class, and see for yourself! If you've read my reviews, you know I won't bullshit anyone. HBUTC is as hardcore as it gets, and still manages to be a welcoming and fun. Skyler and Ray are my favorite trainers there so far. The ultimate fit training classes combine bag work and intervals and are so hard and so awesome. I always walk out of this gym feeling empowered, positive and ready to tackle whatever is in front of me. Highly recommend. ... As for the negative comments about membership policies, refunds, etc, here on Yelp... it was very clear to me when I signed up what the cancellation policies are. They have an early cancellation fee like any other contract. In fact when I looked into cancelling my 24 Hour Fitness membership, (because I only need HBUTC now), it turns out my contract isn't able to be cancelled at all. Bummer. Also their is a Very cool cage that you will be able to train in during Privates with your instructors or during MMA Sparring classes. Also they have Regular gym equipment that is in great shape such as Treadmills, machine and free weights, Excerise bikes, olipticals, etc.. After the employee, Mike, gave me the run down, I asked if I could apply the yelp deal they have on their page. He asked what it was and I answered with "it's a $100 voucher", he said yes. I logged on yelp, bought the deal on the spot and showed him the promo code to apply it to the membership I was going to buy and the planning on putting the rest on my debit card. He reads it and then informs me he cannot accept it because he was knocking off the enrollment fee. This gym is not for the shy, or first time gym goers. Serious fitness and kick boxing folks only need to come to this gym. Its straight to the point, rarely busy, smells of sweaty UFC fighter type guys, but is equipped with EVERYTHING a serious gym goer needs. I didn't feel the "ego" of the kickboxers. They were VERY much to themselves and didn't try to give me tips like MANY guys do at 24 hour fitness. I love that it's not busy in there. The gym has EVERYTHING you need for a superior work out, BOSU Balls, jumpropes, free weights, machines, pull up bars, etc. The kickboxing class is a pretty damn workout. You can still go at your own pace and its definitely "boot camp" style so don't expect it to be easy or beginner. The guy who instructed it was helpful and guided me through my kicks and punches. He corrected my technique but wasn't rude or egotistical. If you bruise easily beware because my shins were black and blue from kicking the bag. It was a great cardio routine. read more

This is the ONLY gym I've ever went to that has cleaning wipes to wipe down your bag/floor area, and the students do it after every kickboxing class. The floor also gets cleaned multiple times during the day by the trainers/employees. The free weights and machines here are NEVER busy. This is a huge plus as you get a more ideal and efficient workout with NO waiting for machines. Also, a special note for the powerlifters: SQUAT RACK!! If you're serious about working out, you know how annoying it is when a gym does not have one, or it does and you're dealing with the machine hogs at Bally's or 24, waiting damn near half an hour for them to get off of it! All that is non-existent here. They also have a complimentary cubby-hole area where you can store your backpack, gloves, shoes, etc. It's not unusual to see a well known MMA fighter here training students or even training for an upcoming fight himself, and it's pretty cool to see. Also, your first class is always free just to check it out, and you can even bring a friend. I haven't tried their Jiu-Jitsu, Advanced MMA, or 4pm Boot Camp classes, but I always see them around me when I take my regular kickboxing classes. There are different instructors for every class, and it's cool because it switches up the routine, breaks the monotony and adds a different perspective almost every time you train. Most of my friends have a 24 hour gym membership and have wondered why I have not renewed my membership there. It's simply because, aside from not having a sauna or basketball court, the gym experience I have here is far superior in just about every way. read more

Joined here in 2013 with my son and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made when choosing a gym. The owner Tiki is great with his Muy Thai class instruction and actually takes the time to go around to each member and watch to make sure their form is correct and will help you correct any mistakes you're making. It's a very hands on type instruction from all of the trainers here that also make you feel like family. Not like other "corporate type" gyms where trainers get paid to babysit you and tell you to do 10 more reps of bench press and are staring at their phone while instructing you. I've gotten into the best shape of my life from training here and making the proper choices when eating and owe it to this place for really kicking my ass in the classes. New members take note, this is NOT a typical meathead type gym and everyone here is very helpful to the newcomers that may be struggling with an exercise or proper form. You may see some reviews as I have of whiners complaining that they had to pay a fee to get out of their contract, NEWS FLASH.....that happens at ANY GYM you sign a contract with. 24 Hour and Golds don't just let you cancel your contract for free!! Great Jiu Jitsu instruction for kids as well with Jesse ( who is amazing with the kids) and Chris Stolzman who has great vibe when teaching the adult classes and is extremely helpful as well! Commit or quit! I purchased an Amazon deal for a one month unlimited membership at HB Ultimate Training Center. I was very excited to go to all the kick box classes. The staff is super nice, and very casual, friendly. As I have known before, I needed boxing gloves for the class, so I just had a loaner pair every time I went. I have to tell you I hated it! I hated the sweaty, smelly loaner gloves and I wasn't committed enough to purchase my own boxing gloves, since I just wanted to try out this sport which was new to me. So I just have one advice to all of you. Get your own gloves and commit to it! Otherwise it's a good cardio and training if you can push yourself on your own. The harder you train and hit, the better you become and the more calories you burn. read more

I have trained at many MMA gym from OC to LA. HB Ultimate is by far the best. Cleanest, most upgraded gym to train in the Mixed Martial Arts. The instuctors have tons of experiance and "No Egos" like other places I have trained at. They by far are the cleanest gym I have trainined at. They have been around for 11 years and have train UFC champions to everyday people to myself. If you want results this is the place to get it at. I have been committed to HBUTC for over 7 years. A complete 180 from the original location to the new location that opened in 2010. Just a great feel of the overall look of indoor photos, outdoor signs & most of all the equipment to be a part of a professional MMA gym. If you want to train, get fit or just attend a private gym HBUTC is the place. Weights & machines are always open, don't have to wait for people babysitting machines like everyone has seen happen at larger gyms. Kickboxing classes are great, trainers follow your moves & inform you the right way to kick & hit the bags without injuring yourself no matter what size of the class. Mats & bags are wiped cleaned after each class. Daily I see a professional janitorial supervisor that cleans ALL machines & mats which no question is a great thing to see at your neighborhood gym. I have never felt more welcome and encouraged by trainers than I was at HBUTC. All of the trainers and staff at the front desk knew me by name pretty much after the first couple of months I started going here. I was doing the cardio kickboxing and boot camp, and both classes were very challenging and always made me feel like I was getting an amazing workout. The kickboxing classes are awesome, each coach has their own touch to change it up and make it fun. Got hooked after my first free trial week of classes. Started out by just going Tuesday's and Thursdays and the occasional Friday and now I make it there any time I can. It's fun seeing the regulars and also meeting new people at the classes. My first day of kickboxing class at HB Ultimate was pretty much my first time working out EVER. I actually injured my shin because I was so out of shape, but the owner Tiki spent 30 minutes icing it after class to minimize the bruising. That kind of personalized attention by the staff and even the owner is just what I've come to expect and really love about this gym. I have been an active member of HB Ultimate for over a year now. I went from never setting foot into a gym to being in the best shape of my life and looking forward to the experience every time. Kickboxing classes at HBUTC are offered about 6 times every day and on weekends, so it's easy to integrate into your schedule. The instructors have very different teaching styles and levels of difficulty so there's something for everyone. Skyler's classes are my favorite, he uses pads during the class and directed stretching time at the end. Chris taught me everything during my first class and was really patient and attentive. Now that he knows what I can do he really pushes me to work harder and not slack off (which I definitely need!). Rob incorporates some shadow boxing in his class and is medium to hard in difficulty. Rob corrected me during some of the combos that other instructors had not done before. Tiki's advanced kickboxing classes are the toughest. He also has really close attention to detail and proper form. I will definitely remain a member here for as long as I live in the area and would recommend HB Ultimate to anyone wanting to get a kick-ass workout, no matter your skill level or past experience. read more

I can't say enough good about this gym. I come from a martial arts background; my father owned a judo club and I grew up in them. I got out of the game, but he (78), my brother and nephew are all judo instructors. When my granddaughter (6) expressed an interest in MMA I called my nephew for a recommendation in my area. Without hesitation, he said, "Go to HBUTC; Johnny Morgan teaches there. He's great." So we went. She took the kickboxing and jiu-jitsu classes and we signed her up. I joined a month later and couldn't be happier. We actually have six people spanning three generations of my family who belong to HBUTC. For us, it's truly a family affair. Things I love about HBUTC: Kids Program - the instructors are just awesome. I've seen a lot of kids coaches and you know the ones with the attitude, "Damn, I gotta teach the kids class." Not here. These guys genuinely like kids and my granddaughter has an absolute blast. She wants to arrive early and leave late and loves and respects her coaches. She's blossomed and I attribute that to them because they're fun, supportive and very knowledgeable. Teachers make all the difference and if you're considering MMA for your child, I urge you to try HBUTC. The first classes are free - you've got nothing to lose. Adult Classes - once again it's the instructors. I sat on the sidelines for a month and watching them is what motivated me to get back on the mat. I've taken classes with most of them and they have all the same qualities as the kids instructors. They're motivating without being intimidating and the classes are fun and challenging - all in a non-judgmental atmosphere. Private lessons - if you feel you need some one-on-one instruction, you can train with a true pro for a very reasonable fee and they'll accommodate your schedule. Plant - the gym is neat and clean and the bathrooms are always impeccable. In addition to the mat area there is a well-supplied weights section for strength training. Culture/clientele - One of the greatest things about HBUTC. I belong to another gym with several outlets in HB and sometimes when you walk in you feel like you're on the catwalk (You know what I mean.) This isn't a gym where the women are checking their lipstick and the guys are pumping up their arms on the steering wheel before they walk in - and that's what's great about it. Everyone is just there to train and get in shape. Age or level of fitness doesn't matter; they're friendly and just as supportive and non-judgmental as the instructors. It really feels like a small town atmosphere. So whether you're 4 (our youngest) or grandpa (me) and want to get in shape in a great place with great instructors and people check out HBUTC.
