As a woman, I expected to be treated with the same respect he would give a man, but he dismissed everything I said and even made a comment implying that my kids "needed a male figure." That was completely inappropriate and uncalled for. It's not his place to make personal judgments about my family. Another red flag was when they pressured us into signing up for uniforms that cost around $800, only to then hand us a "coupon." Looking back, this should have been a clear sign of the kind of business they run. At this point, I deeply regret signing any contract with them. The whole experience feels like a scam, and the disrespect from the owner was the final straw. I would not recommend this place to anyone--especially families looking for a supportive, professional environment.

They have world class technical experience, but perhaps more importantly, they have a deep understanding of how to relay their experience and passion to their students. My 8-year-old son has been attending Checkmat for about 8 months and he loves it. I noticed his self-confidence grow since he started with Checkmat. He tells me his favorite days are the days he goes to jiu jitsu. He's tried multiple sports and has never shown as much enthusiasm as he has for jiu jitsu and a huge part of that is Checkmat's approach to introducing children to jiu jitsu. This is a super kid friendly place. I have so much confidence in this program that I encouraged my 5-old son to try it. TK Tae Kwon Do is a little Martial Arts Studio tucked in the corner of the strip mall on the corner of Newhall Ranch Road and Bouquet Canyon next to CVS Pharmacy. My son is 4 and has been there for about a year now. I can't express enough the effect it has had on his confidence and his discipline; his respect for adults and his overall physicality. It isn't just the Martial Arts. The people who run this place are exceptional with children and don't just teach a fighting style. Every day they teach these kids to obey their parents; stay focused and organized and humble and to respect God and Country. Yesterday at their belt test ceremony, they took specific time to review kids grades from school and called up and celebrated those with excellent marks and work ethic.
