It's hard for me to resist an antique store this big. I'm the type of person who can't pass by an antique shop without wondering what may lie within. Located in Kingston, we always make our way to Zaborski before venturing further up to Woodstock to get that one in a trillion piece for my home. Reasonably priced is not. Prices here reflect the quality and are high- so be ready. Plus with a place this old and unique, there's less chance someone else will turn up with the same purchase. Drawbacks? It takes dedication and a good eye to go through the many, many, many narrow dusty aisles. By the way- this isn't thrift where a lamp will run at $10 and nor will you find your grandma's doily collection here. Think weird. Think crazy. Zaborski has a bit of everything- from tables, wooden chairs, Disco balls, stools, ornaments, to clocks- the rarer the better. To me, antiques add character, contrast and that aesthetic 'umph' personality I love for my home. And if antiques are your thing, this place is definitely enticing. read more

This place is a mess! Overpriced. And very unfriendly staff. They act like they are absolutely not interested in selling anything from their warehouse. Plus, there's no heat in the building and it's extremely cold inside. Besides, most of the items are in very poor condition just because of the way they have been stored. It's actually more sad to be there rather than entertaining. I think the person who's running this business is a hoarder. Who has absolutely "0" knowledge about how to run this business, or any business. I feel very sad for those beautiful items that are kept there as hostages. Unfortunately, nobody will buy them due to EXTREMELY high prices. And eventually, they just turn to trash. I'm praying for this guy to sell his business to someone who knows how to market those beautiful things. read more

Had a horrible experience here - the young owner selling things made me feel like he was doing me a favor by selling me radiators. Told me one price in store for delivery and called me a few weeks later and the delivery price changed substantially (and he also told me it increased because he has a bad back). He then yelled at me over the phone for trying to negotiate pricing on nine radiators, which I paid over 2.4K for - and that he was doing me a favor. No way, not coming back. This isn't how you do business. Don't want to sell, then don't sell. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere. read more

I used to go to Zaborski's Emporium for architectural salvage but have given up. Their prices are very high. For example the price I was quoted for some rather simple 1950s 2 panel doors by the owner was $100 to $125 per door. I know from the past that I will have to sand, prime, and possible patch these doors in order to use them. I am also guessing that Zaborski probably spent about $5 apiece for them from a house demolition guy. What is the reason for the high prices? My conjecture is that they would rather sell one or two things every week for extremely high prices than sell a bunch of things for a moderate profit. I found that I can buy brand new perfect solid wood 2 panel doors from Home Depot for $188 so why buy old junk doors for $125? read more

This place could be cool, but it is managed in such a way as to be a complete head scratcher. First of all: there is a LOT of stuff. A lot of everything. Four large floors of it. But here is the thing: it is priced like the people who have this warehouse full of crap want to KEEP it, not sell it. The prices are ridiculously high. But it's hard to even appreciate that because the vast majority of the thousands and thousands of things in the building are NOT priced. So, it's four floors of vast warehouse. You see a little thing that looks cool on the fourth floor. You have no idea what it costs. You track one of the few people down, on the second floor. They say they will try to find the guy who can price it. He comes over and quotes a price like you just landed on Earth from the planet Oblivioso, Say you need an old door: they have several hundred. Cool! Well, Honestly, 80% of them are NOT cool - they are just old. The thing is about 50 of the 500 Doors are labeled as to the doors' dimensions. But it doesn't really matter because the doors are squeezed in in such a way that you can't examine them without moving men. Oh, and NONE of them are priced. Let's go find the guy that will tell you what he feels like charging for that door today! This is supposed to be fun? read more

I've been going to this place since the early 2000s and have always loved it. It has a little of everything in its three? four? floors, including a floor of almost nothing but doors. I've bought a bellows front camera, a cobalt blue cut glass doorknob, and a forge there, among other things. If you're looking for something obscure, weird, or just old,, they probably have it. read more

I used to love this place: wandering the aisles of doors, digging through drawers of hinges, checking out room after room of lighting. But there's been a change. I think they've turned into hoarders. The prices have skyrocketed, and at the same time, the place has gone way downhill: the floor covered in broken glass, every item covered in years of dust (and some of them dangling dangerously above you), and the aisles impassable because they've been used to stack yet more junk. Junk stores are my fave, and I'm patient with them generally. It's always been freezing in there, but now you can't get to what you'd like to see and you can't afford it if you can. Lace up your best sturdy boots, eat a good, solid breakfast, and maybe do some stretches and warm-ups before a visit to Zaborski's. It can definitely be overwhelming! Plus I literally mean warm up - if you're going in winter, that is. Long have I heard the tales of this architectural salvage warehouse of dreams, so during my last visit to the area I just had to check it out. Problem is it was February, it was about 30 degrees outside, and it was about 30 degrees inside, too, but without the sun. I admit though I thought I'd be in there for way too long and would have to be dragged out kicking and screaming, we only lasted just under an hour. This was for three reasons: - The place is set up like a picker's dream. Just dusty, rusty piles and piles of... everything! Hinges, drawer pulls, knobs, lanterns, lantern parts, doors, so many doors, bowling lanes (really), glassware, cast iron, stoplights, stoves, ice boxes... the list goes on. You expect to emerge from an aisle you carefully squoze down triumphant, holding up some crazy treasure you never thought you'd find. Indiana Jones, is that you? You've found either exactly what you were looking for (which may actually happen) or something you never thought you'd see, but suddenly need (definitely gonna happen). The problem is, nothing seems to be priced right. Most tags I saw were what you'd see in a place that carefully cleans, restores, and curates their offerings. More than once I heard people passing by saying "well this is why there's so much stuff. Do they actually ever sell anything?" They do. As we pulled in I saw a couple loading up their car with what looked like a whiskey barrel and two lobster traps. So there you go. - It was cold. I mean really cold. I foolishly left my gloves and hat in the car and I wasn't wearing my Gore-Tex boots. My fingers and toes needed some warmth. - We got hungry. This may have been an excuse to get warm, but we suddenly decided that we might die if we didn't have tea imminently, so we left empty handed. I imagine exhaustion and hunger are what defeats most Zaborski shoppers. I am actually looking for a new (old) dome light cover and a new (old) front door from circa 1910, and I do aim to go back armed with photos and measurements and my husband's larger car. But due to the prices I'm not sure I'm likely to visit without a specific mission in mind. read more

I'm in and out of architectural salvage and antique shops a lot. I love the experience, the story, and the hunt. This place is really hard to feel good about though - and the other posters nailed it.... It feels like a hoarders place. The prices they're charging are what I would expect to pay in SoHo at an upscale retail joint - where everything is clean and the pieces have been selected with care and attention. But this place is really on the decline, and all I could think about was how awful it would be to carry the burden of owning all this stuff. Plus - it doesnt feel safe at all... Pre-1970 paint has lead in it (all of it) and there are chips everywhere. (if you have kids - get them a hazmat suit before you go) and i couldn't get past the idea that we were in what was effectively an asbestos maze. Stan - you have some great stuff there... I want to love this place but the prices made it hard to. My husband and I are well traveled and shop at salvage stores all the time so when we heard of Zaborski we were super excited to venture up there to see what we can purchase for our Victorian home we just bought. First let me say, the selection of inventory is incredible. You most likely will find what you're looking for here in decent or good condition...but are you willing to pay their steep prices? Secondly, they are all very nice people and helpful which makes it easier for when you're looking for something specific. So why only 3 stars If all that was wrong was the prices? We found French doors that were perfect for our home. They were on the smaller side, and needed a ton of work but we love a good project so it was worth the look. The outer glass was broken on both doors, on one door the wood was a little warped, the stain glass had a piece broken, there was added hardware and hinges from the original condition, and both of the doors needed to be stripped and refinished. So when we were quoted $2500 I nearly walked out. This damped our experience. We may return for some smaller items that were priced at retail but the bigger things we will look elsewhere. read more

Zaborski's is not for the faint-hearted, unadventurous, timid, narrow-minded little souls. Zaborski's is for Artists! And for Rebels! And for Non-conformists! It is a kingdom of lost treasure. Lots of it is dusty, old crap, yes. But you will find artifacts in Zaborski's which you will never find anywhere else. One woman from Texas (of all places) walked in and bought something like 70 or 80 gorgeous old wooden sleds! I love Zaborski's because I never know what I'm going to see there. Very large antique store. You could spend hours going through their stuff. You need to have a creative eye to really enjoy this store. Buy with caution. Bought a "new" piece of plumbing equipment here that wasn't priced much cheaper than retail (we were here due to a seriously tight budget on our bathroom remodel) and Stan assured us he got the piece brand new as overstock. Hired a plumber to install and sure enough the piece had a perfect pin sized hole in it (sign of a factory defect). Useless and wouldn't accept a return. read more

As a home furnishings business owner myself and lover of all things vintage, I had high hopes for a successful shopping experience here. The place is huge, packed to the rafters with vintage furniture, though after looking closely, is mostly outdated, fairly beat up older furniture. He has some nice things mixed in but clearly his biggest setback is the sky high prices. I mean, when you think "salvage" and "picking", you think close to wholesale prices or even fair discounts for buying in bulk. Well, I had set aside a rather large pile of items I was interested in. When it came time to show Stan, my heart sank at the first price he called out. I reminded him that I was a vintage reseller and was interested in buying a large quantity of several different items. Nope. No bueno. No discount... in fact he made me feel like a gerk for asking to knock even 5 bucks off. For example, he had hundreds of vintage wood crates/boxes. He was asking high retail. I asked for a 20% discount for buying 50+ crates. He adamantly declined my offer, saying he paid nearly what he was charging for the crates... yeah right! Come on Stan, we all know how salvage buyers work. I was annoyed he'd rather hold out for the higher end NYC buyer than attempt to build a business relationship for a potential repeat buyer. Later on he sold me some commercial gumball machines.. When I asked how to open them (after already paying for them) he admitted there was no key, but I "can stick a screwdriver in there pretty easy and get to the coins and candy that way". I stupidly trusted his word and later found out that not only does using a screwdriver break the lock, but the coin trays were missing entirely! So now I cannot use/sell the machines for anything. I have a good feeling he knew that. And that was after complaining I was nickel and diming him for the machines. I am in the business of selling vintage goods. Stan could have very easily gained a new buyer who very well could have spent tens of thousands of dollars over the next several years. But he missed out. I am not going back. Stan, if you're reading this, remember, you have to sell to make money to buy. You'll earn dedicated customers in the process. *In response to his most recent comment: Stan, you must not remember who I am because not only do I have an 1800sq ft retail showroom, but a 3000sq ft warehouse and workshop. You, sir, are in the salvage business. Many of your buyers are resellers, if not all of them. In fact, unless you want to sell one or two items per sale, your dealers (like me) should receive a better deal for buying in bulk. Say, 50-100 items in one shopping trip. Not make us feel like we're putting you out of business for a few dollars discount. And please don't attempt to justify your prices because you have "overhead, employees and utilities". As another reviewer so honestly put it, your building looks as though it hasn't been updated in probably 100 years (peeling lead paint all around, broken windows, etc) and during the 2 hours I was there, I only saw you, your other half and a young porter to help with load-ins. In fact, when I was ready to get pricing, I had to go back down 3-4 flights and back to the front desk just to find help. Readers don't need to take my word for it that your prices are not only sky high, but a vast majority of your goods are in either salvage condition (read rough) or just plain not in demand anymore. Just read the other reviews. My other salvage sellers have no problem offering fair discounts to bulk, repeat buyers like myself. I'm not surprised you have a building filled to the rafters with junk. At your prices it will stay filled for years to come. read more

I think the other reviewers here are giving this place a bad rap. I could care less if the place is neat and tidy or it is or a bit cold. For those who are serious about restoration this place is a tremendous resource of amazing antique lighting, doors, windows, furniture, clawfoot bathtubs, sinks, radiators. The best thing is that they have these things in great volume, so you have a good selection to choose from. In terms of the pricing, these were not garage sale prices but I found the prices reasonable considering the savings in time it would take to hunt something I was looking for down. read more

I always find Zaborski's a pleasure - I have been there numerous times and always found something new and enjoyed the fantastic amount of great finds. The quality and quantity of what they have is truly a rare find. I am restoring an old home and have found this to be a truly priceless resource! I do not understand Wingergreen C's comment as this is a typical salvage business and clearly they do not understand what a salvage business is and regarding pricing, Zaborski's is very fair with their prices and the materials they have are of better quality than most other salvage places in the area! Agreed with others. This place should either slash their prices by at least 50%, and start selling, or- if they want to keep their NYC prices- clean and restore everything. It's confusing and frustrating the way it is- giant piles of rusty stuff with some insane price tags. I stopped by there on a Saturday around 6 pm and saw a beautiful gas sign. The following day I sent an e-mail asking them what the price was. Sandy was very responsive and gave me a decent price. I negotiate about 30 % off via email. I went in the next day Sandy was in and out of the office and when it came time to pay the big boss, Stan was at the register. I must admit I was a bit nervous after reading the different reviews. I explained to him that we agreed on a price. He was a true gentleman I paid the price and he and a few of the crew members helped me load it and tie it down. What a bunch of whiners! As New Yorkers have discovered Kingston, they've brought their inflated sense of entitlement along with them and take exception to prices they themselves have forced up due to demand and pain in the butt attitudes. The point is, you cannot compare the prices on old, heavy hardwood doors and new Home Depot pine or composite. And they don't make sinks, tubs and doors like that anymore or for those prices. Architectural salvage is harder and harder to come by, so if you're trying to find, as I was, two cast iron gas fireplace surrounds for an 1880's house in Roundout, you trace the space you need to cover and take the tracings to Stan and Sandy. They found, over a about a year, exactly what I needed and I was thrilled to get them to spiff up and install myself. Stan is a gentleman and Sandy has a wonderful sense of the absurd. I loved every minute hunting there, but then, I used to haunt the 26th Street Flea Market in Manhattan. When it was cold, it was cold. Big deal. Add another warm layer. read more

Today, I entered Zaborski's at 4:45 and after asking for help, I was told that they were closed. I pointed out that it was not yet 5:00, but he said that they were done for the day. Apparently going home to watch that professional wrestling match while downing beer and pizza was more important to this bunch than the $500.+ I had allotted to spend on this salvage run. Junk business must be good... but I was not a happy camper. As an Italian woman, I felt an evil eye curse was in order... i am in complete agreement with the other 2 reviews. The prices are insulting to anyone who knows salvage(this is our 9th renovation), the first floor has furniture stacks looming over your head as you walk down a 2 foot path, and the real fun begins in the basement. You enter into an eerie maze of doors as the smell of fuel oil, mold spores and lead dust fill the air. Aah, Springtime at Zaborski's. After my experience today, I will never return to the 'Emporium' nor will I recommend it to anyone. What I will do in an effort to support businesses of integrity is to share a list of our favorite salvage/antique shops which have been accommodating and reasonably priced: Hoffman's Barn- Red Hook, NY/ Habitat Restore-Hudson, Albany & Schenectady, NY(go to website for your nearest location)/ Fed-On Antiques-Saugerties, NY/ Historic Albany Warehouse- Albany, NY / Eco-Building-Springfield, MA / Nor'east Architectural Antiques N.H.(far but they have a great website and ship). After reading all the negative reviews I was pleasantly surprised at how organized and clean the place was...sure prices start high,...but Stan the owner was negotiable and really I would say the prices are pretty comparable to other places and ebay. They have a really amazing selection of stuff and obviously put alot of time and effort in to the place. Stan and his wife were also very friendly and helpful so I wanted to make sure to let people know that I had a very good experience and felt like they were honest hard working people. I commonly go with a group of freinds, and speaking for all of us we are always pleased with our visit. Places like this are rare, and if you don't mind searching and diggin for what you need, you can probably find it. And that is the fun of it. If you want to shop where everything is organized and cataloged, go there and shop and pay for and have no fun. anyone can open a catalog or shop on Ebay, and to us that is no fun. Hey people, this place ain't ABC Carpets in Manhattan, okay - it's not supposed to have wide aisles, a staff from Downton Abbey dusting every knicknack, and unctuous salespeople asking "can I help you?" every second - instead it's a funky warehouse and always full of surprises, a place where they leave you alone to find oddball furniture, unique lighting, and invite you to poke through drawers and drawers filled with the potentially perfect faucet, light switch, or hinge for your door (be that door a barn door, patio door, paddock door or closet). We've lived in the area for 30 years (we split our time with living in Santa Monica California) and have furnished living rooms, library-dens, bedrooms, bathrooms, and outdoor areas of our Hudson Valley country properties by using Zaborski as a key source. The owner is a wonderful character with a big heart, happy to help locate one-of-a-kind kitchen fixtures, claw-foot bathtubs (of all sizes) and hot-water radiators, doors, windows and fixtures from the 1890's through mid 20th Century. And despite what the "pickers" are complaining about, the price here is right - and if it isn't the right price for you, ask Stan, and he'll do what he can. We've always found his prices to be super reasonable. Some of the reviews of this place are so condescending it makes me gag - but note that those negative reviews are written by competing dealers who are not buying for themselves, who are only interested in a margin for re-selling to make their own profit. If you're a homeowner or renter with a taste for the eclectic or restoration and you're looking for a surprise for decorating your own place, have some fun here searching through Stan's encyclopedic inventory. My husband and I went looking for a vintage sink for our home. We found a couple that were in "ok" shape, but because they are so filthy you can't even really tell. Unfortunately the owner was not in so another man took pictures of them and our phone number and told us he'd ask the owner and call us back. (Our trip was over an hour 1 way) The next day, no phone call. Finally my husband called them. The woman that answered said she didn't know what the prices were because even though we wrote our number and what we were looking for specifically someone else there wrote different prices all over the lines and she had no idea what was what. She passed the phone to the owner and he had no idea about the sinks we looked at even though the other guy took pictures and texted them to him the day before. My husband tried to describe the sinks and all the owner said is "All the sinks are in really good condition (TOTALLY NOT EVEN CLOSE TO TRUE) so they're all $800.00. How could EVERY sink in that place be $800.00? Some have holes right through the cast iron or are so chipped and rusted they are basically worthless. We have been there before and picked up odds and ends, but $800.00 for a rusted out sink, NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. My husband hit up Craigslist and we found the exact sink we wanted in near mint condition for $150.00, brackets and original faucet included. Lesson learned. If you want some little trinkets or a conversation piece or just like looking at old crap, it's a great place. If you're looking for an actual antique or a quality vintage piece save yourself the trip. read more
