"The Rest Of The Story"
I wanted help getting started on weight loss (70-100lbs) & learning how to eat better. I'm all about meat, potatoes, cheese & diary. I can only tolerate about 4 vegetables & 2 fruits. Nonetheless, I want this to be the last time I have to go from obese to normal. It sounds too good to be true so I was skeptical. Having been a civilian employee for the Police Dept for 20+yrs just adds to the skepticism.
My world has changed drastically from being a married carefree adult only child to caretaking a few yrs apart for divorced parents who lost their battles with cancer. After losing my mom exactly 3 yrs ago today (Wow. I just realized this. Divine intervention.), I then lost over a dozen other family members, friends, and parents of friends who were so important to me growing up. The last 3 yrs have been rough. It's time to do this for me. :-)
I joined the website. There were no new classes to join last fall but I wanted to be notified when a new class began. In the winter I received a kind, friendly & informative call offering to let me join the "maintenance" classes (at a cost, but that's only fair) until a new class opened up. I was urged to join this class because most often when people say they are ready to lose weight, you should really pounce on the momentum THEN (my words). The motivation may dissipate. I agree, it's usually true. But I knew for me, it was different this time & I was determined to wait for a new class. I also questioned why they wanted my money so badly. Why would I join a maintenance class? Who wants to be fat in a room full of normal? What are they selling??
It's not often an only-child-brat admits they're wrong! I was completely wrong. They are not selling pills, supplements, bars, shakes... they are not selling you anything. HONEST TO GOD. I can't tell you how relieved I was to learn this after being there. Hard to believe, they actually just want you to live long, be happy, avoid diabetes, heart problems, etc. And the "maintenance" classes? They vary from people like me who just finished the initial 6 wk class to those who have lost their weight... every phase of the journey is represented. I absolutely COULD have started in those classes as proposed to me initially. (Note to administrators - maybe it shouldn't be called a maintenance class?)
There is a primary care doctor who has shown up to 3 of the 6 classes. (Where does he find the time? I have a doctor who has heard about Dr. Taubman & thrilled to know he was leading this.) A psychotherapist leads 3 classes and focuses on what you're gaining not what you're losing, mindfulness & how powerful your brain is in this journey. A dietician leads 3 classes. (If you bring up a study you recently read where "x" food is bad or good for you... 99.9% of the time he has read it too, found out the details/background, who funded the study, and read about the research that came before it & after it!) Sometimes they're there together. And they're all available to you by email/phone.
I have now been through the 6-wk beginner's class & have learned so much. I've "only" lost 9lbs but I did it on MY terms. Could I have been more gung-ho & lost 20? Considering my current size, probably. But that's not me.
There are no "you HAVE to cut out" this or "this week you HAVE to x, y or z". It's information, tons of information. Sharing. Affirmation. Different approaches. Menus & recipes to try *if you want*. You take what you want from each class & use it as you see fit. Want to be a vegan? Come to the class! Want to stay meat & potatoes like me? Surprise! Do whatever you want. But you CAN make healthier choices and find out that some things actually taste good. Things you hated? Try x this way instead... wow, that wasn't so bad. That's actually do-able!
It's do-able. AND it's exactly as advertised. A rare thing in 2016!
