I actually feel kinda biased reviewing Zambreezys as I pretty much live here. Zambreros is pretty much a staple for anyone working or drinking on Rundle st. Basically tex mex in a hurry. Because of the sheer enormity of their customer load these guys have an average assembly time of 30-40 seconds because of this Occasionally the staff are a little short, but with that many customers there's a legit reason. For me it's a burrito or its nothing, I'm absolutely positive that some of their other options are great - I wouldn't know however as Im a bit of "need my fix, and back to work" kinda guy. Their meats are fantastic with beef, lamb, chicken and pork all available, served shredded and and cooked in a plethora of aromatic spices. Salsas and Salads are always Fresh and their guac is out of this world. Great new additions like black rice and iq salsa are always welcome, but in the end I always come back for the same thing - Burrito, chicken, black rice, with the lot + crushed corn chips. TOTAL ROADKILL!!!!! Food is NEVER CONSISTENT! Ordered a burrito the other night ... the server literally SCRAPED the bottom of the bowl to get some PUREED meet dregs and water out. Then added a sprinkling of cheese from the bottom of another bowl ... half a scoop of soggy (CLEARLY long-standing) salsa ... wilted, BROWN lettuce that looked like it had been sitting on bitumen on a hot summer's day. Then proceeded to smack down two scoops of rice that literally "dribbled" more moisture! Never seen rice do that!! Come time for the quacamole ... $2 barely got me the tip of a teaspoon ... was hardly visible. When I spoke up, she reluctantly slapped on another tiny minuscule ... appearing as though she wished it was the back of my head she was slapping! No fear I'd complain to management ... none! Come time to wrap it, the centre popped open ... little wonder, with all the dregs and water! Didn't seem to bother her, as she dropped it into a bag from 3 feet in the air! I went to sit down .. but it leaked through the bag before I made it to the table! It was nothing short of ROADKILL! You people need to focus on consistency and train your staff on how to roll a damn burrito! At this point, I was too drained from the appalling customer service that I left the burrito on the table to bleed out and take it's last breaths ... You gotta hire people who actually care about doing a quality job ... a job that they're PAID TO DO ... Fast hands dumping poor quality SOGGY MUSH and container dregs into a tortilla is NOT a good job!!! The only people who actually enjoy your slop are those with little or no experience with quality food (aka Maccas and HJ's addicts) ... or those who are too drunk to realise they're eating garbage! read more

Zambreros is what you would get either on your way to uni, during your break at work, or after consuming copious amounts of alcohol on a Saturday night. The food is very satisfying, tasty, and rich. It is basically like a Mexican version of Subway; you can choose from a burrito, bol, taco or hard shell taco wrapped in a soft shell, choose a filling, salsa and sauce, and maybe something extra like chips and salsa. I've had the lamb burrito with tomato salsa and smokey tamarindo. It was very filling, but not sure if I would pay $10 every time. They do charge extra for guacamole but I guess it's because it's "fresh out of real avocados and fresh citrus juice." (Sorry, I'm not being sarcastic, but I had to quote). I don't really eat guac so it isn't a problem for me, but I can see how others might find it slightly annoying to pay extra. I'm a huge fan of Mexican food, so naturally I was very excited when I saw Zambrero open up on Rundle Street. The only concern I ever have with Mexican food is how healthy it is. It's not hard to pick up some ready-made spice mixes from your local supermarket and prepare a taco feast at home, but the amount of salt and chemicals that go into both the spice mixes and salsas is worrying. Thankfully, Zambrero has a healthier answer to your Mexican craving. The food preparation is much like Subway or any other "production line" food establishment. The benefit of this is that whilst you can choose the type of food you would like (e.g. beef bol, vegetarian burrito, etc.), the ingredients are entirely up to you. The meats and vegetarian bean mixes are kept heated and ready to serve with a zesty combination of spices, and the vegetables are fresh - no withered lettuce or mushy tomatoes to be expected here. Additionally, the sauces to choose from are always interesting to try, my personal favourite being the smoky chipotle sauce for vegetarian burritos. The usual assumption is that junk food is cheap, and healthy food is pricey. Fortunately, the meals on offer don't break the bank. Even the Mexican beers are sold at a reasonable price, and are a great way to turn a quick meal into a fun get-together in their rear dining area. So, I don't normally champion a place, in the way that I like to champion and support Zambrero. When it comes to a place like this, I'm a creature of habit. My regular is a Chicken Burrito, with guac, sour cream, cheese, lettuce, all salsas (onion, tomato, corn), lime, and Verde sauce (hot hot). PLUS thanks to some great management and licencing foresight.. if you do happen to feel cheeky at lunch, you can shoot a shot of tequila over the counter to kick-start your Mexican themed afternoon. ¡Qué idea tan impresionante! Now, I've heard it said around.. and also used to think myself, of this place as expensive.. and, in truth it is a bit when compared with HJs or Sushi options 'round the corner. But I think it's important to make people aware .. that while the small premium you pay for Zambrero over HJs or sushi pays dividends to your waistline (as ultimately, they are pretty different products).. in the Zambrero case, your money is also fed back into a 'plate4plate' program for feeding kids overseas in need, as admin'ed through actionagainsthunger.org Besides... for a similar price, they're open till 4am; it's better quality than a yiros with the lot, and more substantive than any of the food at neighboring Cibo and the like. It's an easy order, and I love their whole use of colour in the stores. Biggest turnoff though.. the occasional, but real mess - please, get some more/motivate existing staff to keep the dining space clean, with serviettes etc in abundance! The 4 stars only because it's largely a takeaway joint where the opportunity to service your customer is small but (as with most places) I think could be done better.. and I'd like to see if they could improve on the occasional in-store mess.. otherwise, it's great and YAY! I'm a fan. FYI - I eat a Burrito at one of the stores, at least once a week as part of a **12PM BURRITO MONDAY** thing some mates and I have going on.. we're trying to suck people from our offices and even the local Adelaide community into our fun so that we have something to look forward to when going to work, and busting out those first few hours on a Monday morning. There isn't much I can say about Zambrero that hasn't been said before by other Yelpers, but I'll say my piece anyway. As Sean M. has said, Zambrero is a bit like a Mexican Subway and the constantly busy staff churn the goods out at an alarming pace tapping out the fillings and extras onto your budding burrito and in less than a minute you're left with a tightly wrapped wrap and are now contemplating how to open it properly. The fillings are generally OK although there are a few elements I'd like to see more of in store that I've had in other places, but I'm sure the menu will be added to has time and tastes change. Although my American friends insist that burritos should always have rice in them, like Madeline W. I wish the rice was an option rather than a given as I find it to be overwhelmingly bland and taking up valuable space in my carb-meter. That said, I now ask for no rice, which is met with a strange glance and once a "You know burritos traditionally..." which is similarly met with me interrupting with a firm "No rice, please". I fear that one day the owner will turn around and have a Soup shop owner moment a la Seinfeld, but this is yet to happen (yet). I don't mind Zambrero and the food is OK as far as takeaways go, but for the price, the quality and the overall satisfaction I get from it, I'd rather get a yiros. read more

I am a fast food burrito rookie... I am vego so simple choices to be made here... You'd think. From the get go I am on the back foot, I thought the rice was a 'choose' but was too slow to stop the keen burrito dude and ended up with stodgy rice my burrito without being asked, kind of seems like they are trying to pad it out, add the scrape of guacamole and scrape of beans it was pretty much rice wrapped up in a burrito. Oh there was lettuce. And what about the salsas? Yes some corn and tomato made an appearance; unfortunately there was no coriander salsa left in the container, but rather than get more, burrito dude pretended to scoop the invisible salsa, if I had more guts I would have said something, but it was busy and I didn't want to hold everyone up. Freaking perfectly delicious. Do NOT take this with any negative connotations, but I love eating foods in cylindrical form, especially when filled with rice, refried beans, avocado, tomato, cheese, white sauce and chicken. Open at all hours, I eat zambrero as the preferred choice over subway, and sometimes even over a restaurant meal and often because I've had a few too many drinks. Their dos capas taco surrounded by a soft wrap assists people like me who can't keep foods neat or together - keep them neat and together. They have frozen cocktails, beer and just regular soft drinks and you can share a good nice bowl of nachos. Anything more perfectly formed? Nope. read more

Zambreros is a trendy 'Mexican-style subway' on the corner of Frome and Rundle St. Having been here a couple of times, I am very pleased with the freshness of the ingredients that go into making burritos. Just like at subway, you pick what meat you want to have - beef, chicken, lamb or pork, then construct a burrito with rice, salsa, guacamole (although that will cost you extra) and even jalapeños. At around $11 for a burrito, Zambreros is decent value. The burrito is 12 inches in size however is wrapped up with all the filling inside to something that you can easily carry. They have some nice furniture inside where you can sit and eat however some of the tables are a bit wobbly making it a tad difficult. To keep the burrito fresh, it is wrapped in foil. This is very similar to what I have seen with similar burrito style franchises when I was in the United States. But apart from this detail, there is something else that sets this place apart, that is the Plate for a Plate program. Whenever you purchase a burrito at their store, someone in an underdeveloped country gets a cup of rice. I really must applaud this franchise (which started in Canberra) for its humanitarian efforts in this regard. I have tried both a chicken and beef burrito. If you want a light and tangy sauce then opt for the herby mayo. But if you want a really spicy treat, then the spicy chilli sauce is really good flavour. Their nachos are great for just $10.50. The nachos are served with guacamole (this time, no extra cost), salsa and your choice of meat with sour cream and cheese. The cheese is light which is good and the nachos are the less fattening rectangle style, which is nice because it makes you feel less guilty about digging into a Mexican fiesta. Super Tasty, made infront of you... i guess you could call it the Mexican subway, but better. The quick warming of the tortilla,and wrapping in foil (so much better than paper wrap) is kept warm, and the fresh salsa dressing doesn't make this a cold wrap by the time your back at the office to at it. but if you've got the time, grab a seat, then finish the meal out with a tequila shot to make the afternoon that little bit more bearable. So having come from the west coast of the U.S., I have eaten Lita of Mexican and know my way around a burrito bowl! I LOVE Zambreros! The flavour, the black rice, the fact that they help the needy through what I buy, it's all good here! I always order the black rice power bowl and have never been let down. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because the place has always seemed a little dirty in the food prep area. When I see my food prepared, I want to see it in a clean prep area. The staff seem to be the hippie types that don't like clean hair which is fine too but it just adds to the overall feel of the phage being a little sloppy. Zambrero ordering is much the same as Subway. You start at one end of the counter, pick your meat and then choose the rest of your ingredients. And this is the problem. By the time you reach the end you have a burrito, packed full of stuff that you like, but ultimately forgettable. As you munch through, you start to wonder why. Since the menu lacks any real direction, it doesn't take you anywhere interesting. The boring filling options don't help either. It is much the same as going to a restaurant and being asked for a list of favourite ingredients, only to have the waiter return with those things sitting on a plate. It is sort of pricey as well, a basic burrito costs over $10. Even worse, they charge extra for guacamole, which is borderline criminal for a Mexican place. Having said all that, if you say yes to all the ingredients, you will ultimately end up with a pretty filling meal. It just won't be memorable. read more

I've been eating a lot of burritos lately....and these ones are pretty kick-ass. On my most recent visit to the Rundle Street store, I was served by some incredibly helpful and friendly staff and considering they were insanely busy this should certainly be noted! I love the fresh taste and the many options for salsas and sauces! I am also really impressed by their initiative (that I noticed in store) that they donate money from each purchase towards feeding those in need - great work Zambrero! Up the east end of the city and feel the need for some 'Tex-Mex' well pop in here to Zambrero and grab a tasty Burrito, the smaller Chikito or a salad bowl, all full of the flavours of Mexico. There's something for every taste (as long as it's Mexican) from Beef and Chicken to Vego varieties with a sprinkling of the healthy stuff and some tasty Salsas (for me the hotter the better) They are a little pricy and not outstanding, but if you want some of those flavours you can do worse. It's taken me a few goes to like Zambrero. I'm a Burp man, you see. However, I can now see the hungry tex-mex loving void they both fill. In Adelaide, at least, there is a place for both Zambrero and Burp. Oh happy days! I opt for the Vegetarian Burrito without guac (sorry, but I hate avocado!), with the tomato salsa, as much salad as they will put on, and the hot hot verde sauce. They really are delicious. I love love love that they wrap them in foil. So much neater than the greaseproof paper nonsense of most places. It keeps it from spilling on your strides good and proper! read more

Oh, Zambrero. You make me feel like dancing! There's not much I can say that hasn't been said, but I couldn't resist giving my rating for Zambrero. The atmosphere is pretty sweet. It's a nice little set up which is filled with bright green chairs along the contrast of black and white tables and flooring. It's cheap. It's fairly healthy (or at least I like to think so). It's bloody delicious. What more could you want? Get off your ass and visit Zambrero now! Then you can get back on your ass..but then you'll probably want to get off your ass again because you'll be hooked. Is my point getting across? I think it is. read more

Hello burrito! Grab your poncho and sombrero and don't worry about the tequila, they've got plenty there. Life can't get much better than eating delicious Mexican food and shotting tequila AT THE SAME TIME! Why go to a club when you can just get drunk here and eat burritos all night? A fantastic feature about Zambrero's on Rundle Street is that it is open late on weekends. So instead of getting a microwaved pie from the servo, hit up this place for a burrito. The shop is even brightly coloured so you can find it when you're blind drunk. Convenient AND delicious! The food is self-explanatory; it's Mexican, it's tasty. The only downfall is the $2 charge to add guacamole. I personally like the chicken burrito, with all the salsas, cheese, sour cream and white garlic sauce. Sadly, I can't justify spending the extra $2 for guac on a student budget. read more

If I'm in the city and I'm not up for sitting down at a table for half an hour for an order, I'll be at Zambreros. Love the burritos, even more so when I've had a couple of drinks. Burrito integrity early on was a problem, with some lap-covering disasters occurring, but I believe that it's gotten much better over time. Zambrero's is a great option for a quick and tasty casual lunch or dinner. While it is not 'gourmet' Mexican, or particularly authentic, I find it to be good value for money and a healthy fast food option. The menu can be a little confusing, but the staff are helpful in walking you through the options - basically burritos (2 sizes), tacos,bowls (burrito fillings without the tortia) and nachos. The food is made in front of you, so there is no waiting around. Fillings are fresh and there is a good selection of sauces. I highly recommend the chicken with chipotle sauce. There is seating inside, but if the weather is good, I prefer the outdoor area at the back to eat (especially with a jug of margarita's and a group of friends), and they've recently put seating out the front. read more

I have an interesting history with this place. I was there with friends on the opening night of this now extremely popular burrito dealer. A balmy summer evening during the Fringe when I got with my bad influences and drunk ourselves silly. We were being hooligans per usual and eventually got kicked out for making mess one of the tables. Thankfully they didn't blacklist us after making such a disturbance and have had many good feasts there since. The signature being the monolithic burritos they make in a speedy fashion. Made to order you can have chicken, beef, or a mix of both if you so desire. Chock full of the usual accompaniments (salsa, lettuce, beans, rice, etc) and the option of six delicious sauces. This costs $10 with guacamole being an extra dollar. Ask for a recommendation for sauce, it varies on the burrito technician. However I find the best combination to be Verde and Chipotle sauce. They wrap in foil and you can walk out the door with a meal tucked in your arm like a newspaper. The burrito is thick and slightly heavy, but it won't take you more than one bite to be hooked on the flavoursome jam packed tortilla. Tim, the owner, is a easy going fellow with an interesting story to tell. Don't touch his snowglobe though. read more

Oh wow on the customer service. So apparently if you are in line, reach the counter, while having a conversation with a friend, you are not worthy of their service, i mean really? Sunday night, 1am, 2/8 check your staff. When questioned they changed their story from, oh we just don't like your type of customer to you didn't line up correcty. I did, they are full of crap, and i lined up for half an hour, reached the front via the line, and then got ignored. Everyone should know rundle street yiros shop is so much better. Tried the new Zambrero in Mt Barker. Still feel it's nothing compared to burritos you find elsewhere. Not satisfiying at all.

Love the flavor and variety but the portions are quite small and they charge quite a bit relative to what they serve. The fact they're open late is a big plus and service is prompt. Burp Burritos about 50 meters down Hindley offers larger portions though their operating hours are much shorter. read more

Any positive reviews of this franchise are paid for by said franchise. The food is terrible. There is no 'Mexican' flavor to it. I can literally cook the same entire meal for 10 dollars than the 50 dollars charged. You should redirect your goal of feeding the homeless to your chain. otherwise your customers will die of starvation too. read more

yummy burritos, friendly staff and decent servings (they used to be huge and then they downsized but they're back fo being pretty good)

Today my 2 adult daughters and I were called to the Royal Adelaide hospital as my mother in law is very ill and not likely to remain for much longer. The girls and I were hungry and in need of coffee. They purchased burritos whilst I got the coffees next door at CIBO. Either place could accommodate us to sit, but we chose outside of Zambreros. We sat and talked and held tears back. As we finished up, I looked over to see my oldest daughter heading away from everyone to have a cigarette. We got up. I'd scanned for a bin, but couldn't see one, so headed over to where my daughter was. It was at exactly this point as I then spied a wheelie bin, that this woman swooped out of nowhere, identifying herself as the owner and shaming me for not putting my rubbish in the bin and how much of a poor example to my children I was. I was shocked. I told her she was incredibly rude, and she would not let up about how terrible I was for not putting my rubbish in the bin and that I didn't even eat anything from their establishment, to which I exclaimed that we most certainly had and pointed to the wrappers. She was truly horrible, and my daughters felt furious. What's interesting to me is that one of my daughters has worked at Gloria Jeans since she was at high school, and I proudly note how she always makes the effort to put her waste in the bin, because she knows how it feels. I will also note, that the girls happily put the previous people's rubbish in the bin - who cares, it happens, you want a table so clear it away. And finally, what a shame I am unable to review the food personally, as I wasn't hungry. And now that this person was so rude, I will never ever ever go to this place again. And even though I think it is good manners to clean up after yourself, there is kind of an inkling that if you eat somewhere that provides tables, that maybe it's not such a terrible sin to leave things for staff to clean up. (Sorry). My advice to you, dear woman, is that if you feel so incredibly offended by people leaving their rubbish at the tables you provide, perhaps it's time you got our of the food "service" industry.
