    Great night views from suites

We booked this hotel via a luxury hotels section on our Am Ex card. Not sure I would call this a luxury hotel for the price paid and what was received vs other experiences. While we did have an awesome corner suite with a beautiful view of the harbor, the room itself was worn and the walls were super thin. You could hear every move above and below and all around, so it wasn't the most relaxing stay. Plus, the hotel is next to the big island bell that rings every 15 minutes and is heard all over the island. Finally, neighbors played music at 6:30am in the morning that woke us up. Why are people not considerate these days? The furniture is showing its age. We brought games to play and the little table we used was all beat up. When you take a shower, you can hear the water moving down the tubes and from other bathrooms. Don't put money in their vending machines. I went to get a Diet Coke and there was no refrigeration. The Coke came out warm. What was particularly maddening was there was a worker in the room and he didn't warn me it didn't work. The pool isn't heated. Being May it was still cold, so no one is in it. The note with all the information on it, left in the room seemed kind of harsh. Don't do this and don't do that. It didn't feel welcoming. The pros. Best view! Loved the cool air and balcony views! Free breakfast. It's nothing super fancy but nice not to have to go out to get some. On our last day, they kept our luggage for us and brought it down to the ferry later that day. That was super cool. :) Finally, last bit of info, it's on a hill away from town. Good for the views. To get to town you can call for a golf cart ride or walk. We walked up and down to get our exercise. Overall, it was an okay stay, wouldn't call it luxurious or super friendly.

If you stay here, you will definitely get the cozy vibes. We came here on a weekday (monday) to avoid the human traffic on the weekend. Maybe it was too cold, but the pool was not heated, and there were no other amenities other than a nice view from the back. The staff was nice. But there were no activities during the weekdays and nothing going on at the hotel so we just explore outside. The breakfast was included in the morning, but the massage was extra cost by Ramona $125 per person for a full body massage. I had an issue with the bedding which I didn't raise a problem with the staff because I'm too shy, but there were hairs on the pillow that was supposed to be new. But they had extra pillows and blankets in the closet, so I used those. Overall, it had no amenities and it's just a room. I would love it if this place offered more !

What a terrific experience! The room was spacious and clean with beautiful views. Everyone was courteous, helpful, and friendly. It's way up on the hill but they offered us many golf cart rides to and from downtown Avalon. While there is an elevator, we had to go up and down some stairs to get to our room. If you have mobility issues, I'd recommend calling before you book. A few perks I wasn't aware of (their website leaves much to be desired, but I also may have just missed it): * They offer a shuttle to/from the marina-- call ahead and they'll meet you at your boat * They offer a full breakfast, including fruit, pastries, and an omelette station * There is a third floor patio with tables and chairs One final tip: bring cash! We used Venmo to tip the drivers but I would have tipped more frequently if we'd had cash. There was absolutely zero expectation of tips, but these folks work hard and I wanted to thank them with a tip.

Ok, i have a ton of gorgeous pictures from this place. It has the most amazing views you could possibly imagine. And little hint, go the catalina off-season, it is the most relaxing place on earth. Don't worry about who Zane Grey is, what books he wrote, or why he decided on a slightly falic (triangular) pool. It is built beautifully into a hill. Oh!! And the beds we're like the most comfortable things in the world. The room was great, along with sandals and robes, it's just a very comfortable room with plenty of space to relax. The staff (remember, this is an island, islands are known for bad service because...whatcha gonna do?) were all great!! From ownership, management, and all the way down, they made it a very comfortable vacation. Also, they pick u up when you're downtown and bring u up the hill to the hotel. The pool is freezing in the winter but great for a polar plunge!! Anyway, the staff makes you feel at home, this is btw, by far, the best hotel on Catalina!! I've stayed on that island a lot, and nowhere else comes close. Breakfast, amenities, etc...Great place to stay!! I won't stay anywhere else when I go to catalina!! And if you need to take a boat, go with the Flyer, more good people.

Absolutely loved our stay with my fiancé. We booked the ocean-view suite and the views were absolutely spectacular. We also enjoyed a private couples massage with Ramona and Allison, which was an incredible and truly relaxing experience.

Stayed here with my husband and friends to celebrate a big event. We loved the location and view of this hotel! Plus our room was amazing. Loved the golf cart service to and from the hotel, and how they transported our luggage off the boat and back to it. Amazing service. The bed was super comfortable, as were the linens and pillows. View was gorgeous. Air conditioner worked great, and the bathroom was spacious. Complimentary breakfast was great. Areas for improvement - please heat the pool or provide a hot tub.

I stayed here for the first time exactly one year ago. Little has changed with the property, although what has changed was not all for the better. I heard the hotel now has a new manager. To reintroduce the hotel, it opened in 2019 after reconfiguring author Zane Grey's former Catalina home into the historic wing of the hotel, and building a newer wing with all ocean-view suites. The building that houses the lobby, breakfast room, rooftop event space and a few rooms is also new, as is the pool and large deck area. The hotel still has a golf cart for pick-up or travel to the downtown stop by Bluewater Grill or to the ferry dock. Sylvia, who I met last year, still works the front desk, as does Kelly, both of whom were friendly and helpful. When I left fairly early to catch the 7 :50 am ferry, the security guard took me because the regular driver had not started work yet. Overall, there were no issues with the staff. Where I did have some minor issues were with the room and breakfast. For both my stays, I preferred the ambiance and character of the historic wing. Last year I booked the Honeymoon Suite, which was very large and had what may have been the original mosaic-tiled fireplace and a spacious terrace. This year I had the Queen Ocean Suite, which was smaller but still roomy and had a large balcony with a better view than the Honeymoon Suite, especially of the Casino and Chimes Tower. Both had mini-fridges and large bathrooms. Several things in the room were not working properly: the electrical outlet in the bathroom, the TV remote (I had to use the buttons on the cable box), the safe (was open but locked). I could have called for assistance but did not. Overall wear and tear in the room and some of the public areas was fairly high, probably very few things have been replaced since opening. Not the hotel's responsibility, but the guests in the adjacent room talked loudly on their balcony well into the night and also were smoking marijuana. Luckily they checked out after my first night. I did notice some improvements. The outdoor staircase that accesses all levels (except the newer wing's upper floors) is now complete so one doesn't have to rely on the single elevator. The desk area in the historic wing now has vending and ice machines, plus a microwave. The former lounge area here has become a small guest room. Breakfast has always been kind of basic and pre-fab. Commercially made baked goods (muffins, bagels, English muffins), cut melon salad, whole apples, oranges and bananas, cereals, hot scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon, potatoes, coffee and orange juice. Last year on weekends there was someone making pancakes, but not this year. I still love the hotel's location above downtown Avalon and its historic nature. I just hope more attention will be paid to the maintenance of the property in the future.

I booked this hotel directly over the phone as I wanted to chat about my options for rooms that were available. I was talking to a young her girl, I knew the second I arrived who I booked with. Her voice and demeanor totally fit her when I saw her. She suggested a pricier room because of the view- as this was a special occasion, both mine and my daughter's (20) birthday-- I splurged. I called two days after booking and gave the front desk staff my time of arrival from the Catalina Express as I had some questions about bag storage. They actually told me that they would pick us up (such a nice touch!) and that we could leave our bags and also grab breakfast and if our room was ready check in early-- if not just leave the bags and explore the island. I have been there several times but this is my daughter's first trip. We arrive on island and nobody is there to pick up. I call-- several times. Straight to voicemail. I call another online listed number and a male picks up "central reservations" I politely ask "are you at the hotel?" He says "central reservations" agitated. I again, ask- "I am so sorry, are you at the hotel?" Again, "CENTRAL RESERVATIONS" I said that I didn't know what that meant and that I was trying to reach the hotel directly but it keeps going to voicemail and he says "it means I'm in central reservations" I say, "I'm sorry, please don't be so rude- I arrived and nobody is here to pick me up and nobody is answering at the hotel- maybe you have another phone number for them?" He gives me another number as my daughter notices a golf cart pull around with the hotel name- he's holding up names but none are ours, I walk over and explain and he tells me I'm not on the list but get in. We head to the hotel to check in, she says she didn't have our arrival time listed and they must've dropped the ball -bummer nothing about our birthdays is mentioned either and not that I was expecting anything elaborate but I stay a lot of places... they could've actually just said "happy birthday" lol. I'm actually surprised that for what I paid this is the most unassuming front desk area ever. They tell us to put our bags in a closet that kinda smells musty-- ok. Our room isn't ready, we change and the driver drops us in town. Pro here: the transportation to/from town is free from hotel and they are very friendly-- CARL though was a stand out! So knowledgeable and kind!! After calling to check many hours later our room is ready-- we head back and well, the view is wild. It's a beautiful view. The room is fine... but the view is gorgeous. So that night is when things just go reallll bad. We start to hear what sounds like scraping of furniture. Turns out to be wild sex complete with screaming. When we go down to complain the second time (front desk did all she could here) they give us another room (honeymoon suite) but this room is actually worse than ours. The walls are so thin it actually sounds like the people are in the room having a conversation. We can hear them vaping-- like actually inhaling/exhaling. We don't even put our bags in the room bc we just planned on sleeping there as they told us the people above our actual room were checking out the next day. At approximately midnight I think we just gave up and went back to our original room to get some sleep it was just so so bad! The next morning they told us they had problems with them the night before as well... so why not tell us? Ugh. Next night, we get ready to go to sleep after a late birthday dinner and what do you know-- people in that room and more sex- these guests were not as wild as the previous night though! Luckily they only lasted a good hour ... then they were just up all night back and forth. I have never had such a terrible nights stay and for the amount of money that we paid it's pathetic. When we checked out early this morning she didn't even say "good morning" "how was your stay" literally NOTHING. She just put our bags on the golf cart and drove us to the boat. I don't know if she didn't want to know or if she was just rude but I'm not sure I have ever complained about a hotel before this was by far the worst hotel experience I've ever had-- coming from someone whose exhusband once booked Hooters in Las Vegas. So so so bad.

The toilet paper holder was falling off the wall

Stayed here for 2 nights during the Catalina Island JazzTrax 2025. It's located in a hill with ocean, mountain, and Casino views. There is a golf cart that takes you down to the center of Avalon for dining and shopping. The staff members are excellent. Everyone from the cart drivers, front office, housekeepers, was excellent. Oh.. complimentary breakfast on weekends! The kitchen staff was also nice and made my omelette perfectly. The room was clean and spacious. The bed was comfy. Separate shower room from the toilet. My only complaint: the drapes did not close completely. The track was broken. I had to use hair clips to close the drapes. I need blackout drapes in order to sleep. I took pictures and reported to the problem. Hopefully it was fixed. If you like a peaceful environment surrounded by nature, this is the perfect getaway.

We had a chance to stay at this wonderful place for a few days. Incredible view, we could see both the mountains and the ocean. The swimming pool, breakfast, customer service, breakfast was excellent. Alexi was specially very kind to us and helped us out whenever we encountered minor issues to accommodate us. Hotel staff made sure to make us feel comfortable. I can't wait to have another opportunity to go on a trip and stay there again. Thanks to all shuttle drivers, hotel staff for the pleasant experience.

My family and I were staying at Catalina Island for a few days. We found Zane Grey hotel and liked it for the most part. Pros: The room had BEAUTIFUL views Free golf cart transportation (only to traffic circle) Breakfast buffet Kind staff Cons: Walls are really thin and could hear next door guests Pool is not heated Chime tower rings every 15 mins which is not super annoying but a bit of a disturbance Tv didn't work Overall, I recommend this hotel but you may not love it.

My partner and I went to Catalina Island to celebrate an anniversary, and we really enjoyed our stay at Zane Grey. The week before our trip, I was messaged regarding our arrival to the island, as they wanted to arrange for our pick-up from the ferry. Once we got off, a staff member was waiting for us with my name printed on a sign. It was incredibly convenient and thoughtful. The hotel itself is located in the hills right above Avalon. There were gorgeous views of the island both from our room and from the back of the pool region. Unfortunately, the elevator was not working when we arrived, so we had to carry our luggage up to the fourth floor. Apparently, the power goes off quite frequently. Our room was immaculate, and the bedding was very comfortable. However, the room was advertised as being soundproof, and it was far from it. We could hear voices from the room above us, and we were woken early in the morning and bothered in the evening with loud stomping coming from above. Additionally, we tried to enjoy the fire pits by the pool at night, but there seemed to be a loud party going on in the rooms adjacent. The breakfast was typical - some cooked dishes, commercial pastries, coffee, and orange juice. Overall, the staff was very friendly, the golf cart shuttle service was convenient, and our stay was pleasant. However, I might come with some ear plugs if you are bothered by noise.

I am in awe of how misleading the description of this inn is. Especially the San Nicolas room!…read moreFrom the website re: the inn: "From the moment you arrive, the pace of the mainland slips away, replaced by sea air, harbor light and the quiet thrill of being somewhere truly special." What we experienced from the MOMENT we arrived - absolute CHAOS. We were greeted with a horrible rotten egg stench as soon as we opened the door, steep stairs with no one elevator (yes that's on their q&a but just another annoyance), violence and screaming in the streets after dark until 3 am, bass from surrounding bars shaking the building until 2 am, overpowering chemical smell in rooms, single pane glass that sounds like people on the street are in the room with you, gaslighting owners and managers (Melissa - not Jackie), unreliable communication, absolute ripoff for what you have to put up with. Melissa ultimately minimized my concerns by saying "nobody else complained". Okay, and? People have different tolerance levels, different health issues, even if it was someone's first time at the snug harbor inn maybe it wasn't their first time to the island. Maybe they didn't care. Maybe they didn't have the energy to complain. That shouldn't invalidate my experience and the lack of transparency. Can you honestly say you laid the framework for guests to make an informed decision? Did you provide transparency around potential barriers guests may experience during your busy season? No. This went beyond just a fun foam party during the daytime hours, there were literal violent fights and screaming in the streets BOTH nights until 3-4 AM. See videos below from Saturday night around 1:30 AM. I do acknowledge they can't control this behavior but they can and SHOULD add transparency for folks who are expecting a soft experience based on their own misleading advertising. The unprofessional manager, Melissa, also loves to blame-shift. She told us we could press 0 or call a number provided if we experienced issues again on the second night. I called 2-3 times throughout the night and it rang endlessly. By this point I was exhausted and didn't even think to get the physical number from the end of the hall and just assumed they weren't answering. When Melissa told me she never received a call the next day I was shocked but instead of being apologetic she said "if it was me, I would have walked down the hallway and got the number". I'm so sorry, in hindsight, if I wasn't running off of 4 hours of sleep collectively over 48 hours I would have gotten dressed at 3 am and gone to the end of the hall after pressing 0 didn't "work". Not sure how I was supposed to discern between it not "working" vs someone not answering. Funny how pressing 0 during business hours worked just fine. Either way, what a ridiculous process to shoulder the burden of breaking up riff raff to the guest and then blameshift when the thing you said would work didn't... While I would love a full refund, I firmly believe we are entitled to at least one night of a refund because of the misleading description on the website and we couldn't make a truly informed decision. I was told they would consider updating the website in the future but that benefits my husband and I in no way. The right thing to do is provide a refund for tainting our visit to Catalina with 0 reprieve from street violence and drunken debauchery.

Last year, Vista and Snug were under the same ownership, which is no longer the case. Snug now has closer affiliation with Hotel Aurora a bit up the hill. Snug is a cozy and charming 6-room inn. There is staff on duty during the day; welcome in-room wine and snacks are provided as well as daily continental breakfast. There is no staff on the premises at night, although someone is on-call. My stay was lovely and somewhat surreal. I visited during the February rains which caused the cancellation of all Catalina Express boats on 2 days during my Avalon visit. This forced guests here for the long Valentines/Presidents Day weekend to leave early or relocate. I ended up being the sole guest for my 2-night visit! And with minimal visitors on the island, evenings were also pretty quiet, despite being right above the main drag (Crescent). Snug does provide earplugs and eye masks if needed. I moved up my arrival date due to the weather and Snug was able to accommodate me, even offering the same room, which was the Santa Catalina room, the inn's "crown jewel" situated on the corner with two large bay windows, one facing Avalon Bay with Casino, Bay and pier views, the other with a built-in window seat facing Sumner and the hills above. All rooms have a fireplace and deep soaking jetted tub. The rooms are not particularly large but are full of charm, coziness and warmth. No robes or slippers, but there were 2 clock/music/alarm machines. Complimentary reusable water bottles are provided; there's a water/ice machine in the hall. The welcome snacks offered were olives, pretzels and high-end nuts (i.e., no peanuts). The continental breakfast was quite ample and includes a small loaf of warm banana bread, yogurt, fresh berries, granola, milk, juice and coffee or tea. You fill out an order slip as to what you want exactly and what time you want it delivered. There are 6 delivery times for the 6 rooms, which of course was not an issue for my stay. There is a common room with a sofa, fireplace and machine for coffee and tea. There is a closet for luggage storage, a public restroom and umbrellas. The front door is open 8-5, key access is needed in the off-hours. Shout-outs to the great staff I met--Jackie, Destiny and especially Johnny at the front desk and housekeeper/breakfast preparer Alicia. Overall a fabulous stay. I usually split my time on the island between Mt Ada and a property "downtown". Snug Harbor has moved to the top of my downtown list!

What a hospitality! We did not expect this type of compation and problem solving, a true representative of Hotel Metropole. Now the pros: Location is amazing, navigation around the hotel or around it is perfect, close to everything, especially the breakfast shop on presmises and of course customer service. All the rooms have two refillable bottles not only for your convenience but also to save your wallet and be eco-friendly. My husband and I liked the wine tasting the best. On the contrary, my father-in-law enjoyed the blueberry muffins a lot, the discount on the tour, and also the hotel gift shop discount. My parents-in-law don't drink wine. Overall, the family was very pleased with our four-day-three-night stay at the Pavilion hotel. The front line was very attentive and helpful. The housekeeping did a great job. The room was tidy and comfortable. We would like to give a special thanks to the front-line staff who worked and received our request to bring more blue muffins on August 19th around 9:15 am right before breakfast ended. Your understanding of everything we needed was very kind and hospitable. You are amazing and a valuable asset to the team and to the hotel.

It has very comfortable bed with TV, ceiling fan, AC, and clean bathroom and towels. Simple and low key amenities for book lovers, introverts, and quiet ones. No loud party and drunken customers. No romantic thrill seekers- if you look for romance- please go to Dubai or Vegas or other hotels - as this one is perfect for us. Staff are always friendly. Management is always cordial and responsive. Summer is high season: high end hotels at Avalon range from $400 and up. We booked for about $260 -$300 a night as listed in Expedia. So, I walked around town by myself and explored all the hotels. I walked into this hotel and was invited to view the rooms by the owner. The minute I saw the rooms, I was in love. I booked this hotel and the Avalon Suite half a year ago. The moment my husband and I got off the boat and walked over to the hotel, the staff was amazing. An attendant saw me going up the stairs with my luggage and ran down to get my heavy luggage and carry it up the stairs for me. Check in was easy breezy. Our room was ready within minutes and we got to go into it at 11am. The Avalon suite was the room all the way down the hall on the left hand side. I believe we are one of the few rooms with an extra large jetted bathtub, the main reason why we chose this particular room at this hotel. I made sure to take photos of all the rooms the minute I walked in so I could write this review complete with photographs of the way we found it. The living room had a fireplace and a tv above the fireplace, a comfortable couch and a sofa. We had two small tables in the room. The room had excellent heating and air conditioning which we controlled at the touch of a button. We of course had a separate bathroom with jetted tub, two sinks, and a nice and large counter top. In the living room, we had another sink with a small refrigerator and two complimentary bottles of water. We had a safe next to the refrigerator which we did not use. The bathroom had a separate small room with just the toilet which we loved because after using the toilet and making a stink, we could turn on the light/ventilator which worked really well at clearing out the smell and close the door. The bedroom was a bit cramped, especially at the foot of the bed in front of the fireplace, but we had a large living room that made up for it. The bed itself was very comfortable and firm, the linens were clean. However, I got really cold on the first night I was there and had to request extra blankets which they promptly brought us. Also, the extra large pillows on the bed were extremely uncomfortable, forcing us to throw it to the side in the middle of the night. I think it's just there for decorative purposes. We found two extra regular pillows in the closet which we made good use of. The room had a small closet with plentiful hangers. There were dresser drawers we made good use of. There were two lamps, one by each side of the bed on top of a dresser with drawers. I loved the space on top of the dresser for me to place my medication and phone and watch chargers. There were plentiful chargers, USB and C type. Although the chargers on my husband's side of the bed wasn't working and I had to charge all of the electronic devices on my side. One thing about the jacuzzi tub. The wall next to it is really thick and we both had a really hard time getting into and out of it. We were both afraid of falling down and had to climb up slowing, stand on top of the little wall area, and climb into the tub and vice versa each time we used it. Other than that, I have no complaints about this hotel. The rooms are only made every third day we stay and we can tell them when is most convenient for them to do that for us. Everything else we need is brought to us by texting them. The hotel had warm Otis Spunkmeyer cookies each evening, though we only ate it one evening because we were out the other evenings. A member of the staff told me to call him so he could place the cookies in our room while we were gone, but I forgot to call each time. Someone came in our room and placed Ghirardelli chocolates with a cold bottle of water for each of us each evening we missed the cookies. Someone even came in one time and made our bed for us which was really sweet. The staff were all so wonderful and warm, making us feel right at home. And when we got tired, we sat in the chairs at the front of the hotel overlooking the beach below while sipping complementary coffee, tea, and lemon infused cold water. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of staying here.

These limitations were not clearly disclosed when I booked. Most concerning, however, was the noise. A restful night's sleep is one of the most basic expectations of any hotel stay, and unfortunately that was not possible. Prior to my arrival, I attempted to cancel my reservation, but my request was denied. Had I known the property's limited amenities and the excessive noise conditions, I would not have proceeded with the reservation. Overall, I feel the accommodations and experience did not justify the premium price I was charged. I respectfully requested that management review my stay and offer an appropriate refund or partial credit as a gesture of good customer service. However nothing was done to resolve this. Our room offered a nice balcony with views of the bay. The bed was comfortable and cozy. The bathroom was large. They offer a continental breakfast each morning out on the patio, which is a peaceful spot to just sit, enjoy the firepit, and koi pond. Or the roof deck is awesome with a BBQ, tables and chairs and stunning views. They also offer trays so you can take your breakfast back to your room and have breakfast in bed. Spoiled! The staff couldn't have been more helpful, friendly and accommodating. Evelyn was awesome, thank you for the smiles and truly wonderful service throughout our stay. Off the boat, we went to drop our luggage to store until check-in. Fortunately we were there during the week, and our room was ready earlier, so we chilled a bit before heading out to explore and have lunch. They also held our bags upon check out. After we returned from an adventure, they allowed us to sit on the patio and enjoy the sun before we had to be at our boat. We couldn't have asked for a better stay, and we will absolutely go back. Just a note for anyone who has mobility issues. The hotel is awesome, but note that you have to walk part way up a little hill to reach the stairs to the small lobby. There are stairs to the lobby and depending on which floor your room is located, there is no elevator, just stairs. For someone in a wheelchair or needing a walker and unable to climb stairs, it is not doable.

They held our luggage for us after we checked out while we waited for our ferry time to arrive. The hotel we stayed at was nice, but it did have some drawbacks. There was only one elevator, so we had to rely on the steep stairs to get in and around the building. We booked a Classic King room, which was cute but quite limited in space. At 180 square feet, my husband and I had to be cautious about giving each other enough room to move around. To make matters worse, when we checked in, the linens on the bed had bloodstains, which was really off-putting. I had to call the front desk to request clean sheets, and it was a hassle for both of us, especially since we were exhausted. The housekeeping staff arrived close to 9 PM, and it took them some time to replace all the linens with clean ones. The room amenities were also limited. We had a mini fridge, a flat-screen TV, a hair dryer, and a small vanity chair, along with two complimentary splits of Prosecco on the first day, which my husband enjoyed. However, the last night raised concerns about the hotel's safety and security. Someone played a prank on us by knocking on our door but not answering. We called the front desk twice to report the incident, but security was unavailable to check the CCTV footage. My husband and I felt unsafe because we had no idea who was knocking. Brian, the front desk staff member on duty, was prompt in keeping us updated on his communication with security and the hotel manager. David, the hotel manager, later reached out to my husband, recognized the incident, and invited us to try their sister property, The Pavilion. In the end, our stay was pleasant overall. The seafood, drinks, and the Avalon vacation experience were very enjoyable.

All boats to and from Catalina Island were cancelled on 2 days of my visit, forcing other guests to change their travel plans. I ended up being the sole guest for all 3 nights of my stay here! With some whispers of Mt Ada being haunted (but not as many as Banning House Lodge in Two Harbors), I was a bit concerned, but fortunately had no paranormal experiences. To briefly review Mt Ada's history, it was once the Catalina home of William Wrigley Jr. and family, of chewing gum and Chicago Cubs fame. He was instrumental in putting Catalina "on the map", and his descendants still own the Catalina Island Company, which runs Mt Ada, Hotel Atwater, Pavilion Hotel and Banning House Lodge, as well as other businesses. All my stays at Mt Ada have been with the Company, although it was previously run as a private B&B. Mt Ada still runs as a B&B, as opposed to a hotel. It's a pricey stay but has many many perks that justify the expense. These include transportation to and from the boat or helicopter terminals, use of a golf cart throughout your stay, daily made-to-order breakfast and lunch, pre-breakfast continental breakfast, afternoon wine/cheese/charcuterie, 24-hour butler's pantry with snacks like gelato, chips, cookies and popcorn plus alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, discounts on Island Company tours and activities. Currently there are about 4 main people interacting with guests at Mt Ada, plus "behind the scenes" kitchen and housekeeping staff. My past reviews have mentioned a stay here is more like a visit to a home, as opposed to a hotel. There will be times when you may not see any staff (especially at night). But Pierre, Liz, Tim and Yoli (Yollie?) work their hardest to accommodate guest needs--they are the chauffeurs, front desk, waiters, luggage handlers, concierges, etc. I applaud them all. One of Mt Ada's pluses is its location on the hill (Mt Ada) above Avalon Bay, even above the main Bay viewpoint that all the rental golfcarts stop at (traffic jams are common here). It's quite peaceful, although in busy times the noise from "downtown" does carry uphill. Mt Ada has 6 rooms. The room I booked was the Grand Suite, Mr. Wrigley's former bedroom. It's the largest room, with a separate living and bedroom, a bathroom with a separate shower and tub, and a large terrace above the first floor terrace. It has a fireplace, as do 3 other rooms, and a raised bed that requires stairs to access, as does one other room. The living room has an antique "radio" that is seen in photos with Mr. Wrigley. There are radio stations hand-written on it; I was appalled to see "graffiti" defacing this historic relic. The terrace is fabulous, but alas the weather prohibited much use; I feared the high winds would blow the cushions on the chaise lounges over the railing. Even the dining tables on the first floor terrace were stored; in more temperate weather it's the loveliest place to enjoy breakfast or lunch. The breakfast and lunch menus have some new items and some old faves. Once again a fabulous and peaceful stay. Thanks again to all the staff. With the Pavilion Hotel reopening soon, Mt Ada may be the next property to undergo renovations. I hope it does not lose its charm or homey character.
