When we first walked in, my thoughts were, 'they're not going to have plumbing parts...' I was totally wrong. This hardware store has it all - everything you expect in a local hardware store and then some. The entry to the store is filled with unique items for your home, trinkets, and gifts. It's a visual delight. Then you get into the heart of the store and there you'll find housewares and small appliances, landscape supplies, light bulbs...the list goes on. They even offer refills of cleaning supplies for environmentally conscious shoppers. Don't forget about upstairs which houses the plumbing supplies amongst other things. What's even better is the staff is friendly and helpful. If you haven't been yet, check it out!

Have you ever seen a house painted yellow? Me neither! Despite the fact there are three yellow…read morehouses on my block. I've never seen the outside of a house painted yellow. Apparently, according to the Benjamin Moore dealer at Miller Paint and Decorating, no house has ever been painted yellow on the outside, because it will fade or require multiple coats so they can't even give me samples of any yellow color for an exterior job. Which is really weird, since the Benjamin Moore website seems to say the exact opposite, even has a color picker for my exterior color. And also because I got yellow colors from three other paint stores/suppliers, meant for exterior paint. But no, I'm probably wrong about this because the dude at the counter said he was darn sorry I just can't paint my house yellow with Benjamin Moore colors. Going to go to another Benjamin Moore dealer shortly to find out whether it's a franchised craziness or just individual lunkheadedness associated with this store, but I shan't bother coming back here, at least not until they invent the color yellow again.

Our very tired 1980s kitchen was desperately in need of an update. We finally got around to getting…read morethe abysmal backsplash replaced and the light fixtures updated, but our oak cabinets were drab and dated. We didn't have the budget for a full kitchen renovation so we knew painting the cabinets was the way to go. When we purchased the house, we had the delusion that we'd paint the cabinets ourselves, but as the months went by, we knew we lacked the time or skill to complete the project and had to call in the professionals. 518 Painters was one of three quotes we obtained. We found 518 Painters solely through web research. It did take a couple of calls to hear back, but we soon after we set up a time for an estimate. Juan's estimate was competitive (and he got back to us with the quote within a few days) -- about on par with one quote and less than our highest quote -- and he had sooner availability than the other company. He gave us a date about six weeks out. Unfortunately, there was some miscommunication with a start date and an issue with a family emergency that pushed it back a couple more weeks than we had originally discussed, but once Juan started on our kitchen, his communication was excellent. Juan showed up on time every day, bright and early. He checked in every day either in person or through text. He talked to me in detail about the products he'd be using and any concerns/questions I had about them. He sealed off the kitchen in a way that kept our pets out, but allowed us access when needed (a zipper in the plastic drape at the door, so helpful). He was also pleasant to deal with -- friendly and upbeat. He made sure the door was locked when he left each day, and I trusted him in our home. When we realized, unfortunately after the project was complete, that the paint color on the cabinets did not seem right (turns out, paint store made a mistake and provided the wrong shade of paint!), Juan came back and repainted as soon as he could. He took responsibility and made good on his end of the bargain to be sure we were completely happy. Yes, this is the right thing to do, but home ownership has taught me that not every person will stand by their work. Juan does stand by his work 100%. If there's any area of his painting that you want fixed/adjusted, he'll immediately take care of it. He also promises to come back and do touch ups any time there is a scratch or nic in the paint. He cleans up well when he's finished and your home is not left a mess. Further, Juan took it even a step further to make sure that our kitchen painting project looked its best. Painting the cabinets required the removal of a vinyl baseboard the prior homeowners had installed around the island. Since the color of the vinyl would not match with the new paint color we chose, Juan suggested putting in wooden base moulding, and offered to do this work himself (and at no additional cost!). I am so pleased that he suggested this because it looks so much better than what was there before. Having our kitchen cabinets repainted was a big financial investment for us, but I am happy to say that it was fully worth it. Our kitchen looks 100x better. As the project has only just been completed, I can't yet speak to how the paint job will stand the test of time, but for now, it looks great. I am glad we chose Juan and 518 Painters to help us bring our kitchen into this decade. He is truly an excellent choice if you are looking for someone to update your kitchen cabinets!

I live right around the corner from a Sherwin Williams (SW) on Wolf Road and I needed some custom…read morestain matched to existing trim in our bedroom, so after puzzling about it for years I heard a rumor that SW could color-match stain much like most places can color-match paint. I drove round the corner to the local store only to be told that every other SW store can color match stain but the Wolf Road one. So, I came here. Upon arriving, the staff were helpful but they told me that in addition to a piece of the trim they were going to match the stain to, I needed a sample piece of the new raw wood that the stain was going to be applied to. This is to ensure the color will match on the new wood as it does on the old wood. Makes sense, except I didn't have any of the new, raw wood trim on me. So I had to come back the next day. I brought 12" of new trim which they said was fine, and I was told it would take 2-3 days. Five days later, I heard nothing so I called them. I was told the stain was "on the truck" and to call back in a week. I called a week later, and was told it was still on the truck. What this exactly means, I don't know. A week later I called and was told that someone had worked on it, and I could come in and take a look. Unfortunately, their hours made it tough to drop by and I was out that Saturday so it was another week before I could get it. Turns out, the stain matched pretty good with one application, and should be perfect with two applications. I don't think they charged me for the color-match service. And the stain went on great. I thought their custom service left a lot to be desired, as the 2-3 day estimate turned into weeks AND I had to call be the one to initiate the conversation by calling every time. That was annoying. But, I don't know any other place that color-matches stain so if you need it done you need SW. But, it might take weeks for them to match it so plan accordingly.
