The reason for giving 3 stars was that they did not show up at the scheduled time as they had accidentally cancelled my appointment in their system. Had I not called them inquiring where my stylist was, they wouldn't have even been aware of my appointment. Fortunately, after my third attempt calling them someone picked up and they were able to schedule Cindy to complete my appointment. I was very happy with Cindy's work and so glad it worked out. It was a relatively low-importance event so I was not stressed out about the time crunch, but if it had been a wedding or special event, this would have been unacceptable. They did not offer a partial refund, a discount on a future service, or anything to make it right. The price was $290 for hair and makeup. Overall I would hire them again, but I would confirm the appointment a week before and a day before the event.

I know how thin & stubborn my hair can be & am almost certain no stylist can ever blow dry any curls in my hair without tools...but I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and made an appointment anyway because it was a last minute decision. I walked in a bit early so another stylist took a stab at my hair (and spent about 10-15 minutes working on it) before my assigned stylist took over - after about 10-15 minutes, she asked me if it's OK to use a curling iron...of course I said "yes" knowing it was gonna end up that way...her manager also approved using it without charging me extra because she also saw how much trouble both stylists had with my hair... I mentioned I had to leave by 10am and didn't want to have my service rushed. At 9:07am my stylist comes out from behind a curtain in the back and proceeds to wash my hair. The wash wasn't thorough, there was no scalp massage or anything, it was just a quick, superficial (top layer of hair) wash with extra-long nails that felt so weird on my scalp (the extra long nails). I feel like I will need to wash my hair again very soon so that my scalp is actually clean (which defeats the purpose of a professional blow out that you'd like to last for a few days). Then the blowout itself was a quick 25 minute blowout (I have a lot of hair and long) that looks nice, but doesn't look special or professional. I was glad I brought my own brush because the one that was there looked like it had seen better days. What is the point of going to a salon that specializes in blowouts then? The vibe of all the staff members I saw this morning was unwelcoming, like they were unhappy to work there.

I give her five stars also because I left my lap top at her salon and she dropped it off at my home later that day. The salon is not super high end so if that is important to you then take that into account. Her prices are on the high end compared to highlights but not for balayage. It looks effortless when she is painting your hair- but trust that this is a real art and she has years of experiences, conferences and schools to perfect this skill. If someone does not know what they are doing, it will be a mess. You can trust that you will have the natural looking high lights that you see on the Victoria Secret models.

I asked for a rounded haircut with lots of layers and face-framing pieces and I showed her my inspo photos as well. She first washed my hair and then got started on the cut. Yessenia did an amazing job! She was friendly and professional and gave me exactly what I requested. I wasn't sure whether to go with lighter or heavier curtain bangs/face-framing pieces, and she knew exactly what would suit me when she suggested sticking with lighter face framing. She also somehow managed to style my frizzy Indian hair perfectly without using much tension on the brush, which was shocking to me. Overall, I had a very positive experience with Yessenia and Essence Salon and will definitely be returning!
