Great neighborhood deli. It's a shame they're closing end of next month (4/30). That first Poor Boy Deluxe we got many years ago truly warranted the "poor boy" moniker--a $5 sandwich piled high with ingredients. That and the Reuben still remain our go-tos. However, it's unfortunate that the price has increased while the amount of protein in their sandwiches has declined over the years. Regardless, def will be missed :( read more

Driving up Solano Ave and saw Zarri's. Stopped, looked up on Yelp and decided to get a sandwich. Fun Deli, lots of Italian food items for sale. Full disclosure...Zarri's is special to me. I had my first sandwich there, shoot...almost 4 decades ago? I was a little dude. I fondly remember Mr. Zarri's bright smile, and always cheerful demeanor with customers. Although sentimentality can sway a person's opinion, I really do think this deli is worth commending. The sandwiches are simple. Good bread. Fresh deli meats and cheeses. Toppings to order. A true deli equation that is old school, and I happen to love it. There is no "specialty gourmet" angle that will cost you $25 for a sammich...get over it. Although I did have their porchetta sandwich with provolone today, it was really good. I used to get roast beef and Swiss as a youngster. I was helped by a woman with a very nice smile, and an appreciation for my appreciation. There was a cordial younger dude who was friendly and rang me up. But the real sunshine that brightened my day? Seeing Miss Zarri there. As soon as I saw her bright eyes and her always perfectly done hair, all the nostalgia was solidified, and justified. We spoke for a moment and exchanged some positive energy, and it made my already delicious sandwich that much more enjoyable. I have absolutely no idea how this place stays in business. The sandwiches are below average from anywhere and anything you could make at home with a loaf of bread and cold cuts. I came to this deli looking for a good sandwich to eat. The place is small, cozy and has a selection of other food products like chips, novelties and the like. I had my eye on the reuben, I was craving something a little on the sour side. The person behind the counter offered me a few other add ons on top of the sandwich I ordered which was nice. Zarri's Deli is a welcoming traditional grocer and eatery. Their sandwiches are delicious and large enough to comprise a mid-day meal. I have ordered several varieties and have not been disappointed. Individual portions of pasta salads are available to augment the sandwiches, as are tinned sardines and oysters. The range of well cooked traditional Italian-style meats is complete, and in concert with pasta, pastries, sauces, and cheeses, can support any Italian meal project. Amazing fruit juices are 'not from concentrate'. The wine selection supports any meat, fish, or fowl, or social fruit-and-cheese get togethers. Outdoor seating accommodates one to 20 or so diners, and I have enjoyed conversations with more than one chance-met Zarri's customer. There is no drip coffee, but capuccino and latte's are available, and one can make do with an Americano. A coffee and a hot piroshki are excellent morning, noon, or afternoon fare. I love Deli's and this one is great. The owner and staff are very friendly. And the sandwiches are large so its a great meal for me. I love the Cuban sandwich and the Italian pastries as well. I'm relatively new to Zarri's having only started going there in the past year and a half. Since my first encounter with their sandwiches, I have to say that whenever I am in that part of Albany and it's lunchtime, Zarri's is right at the top of the list. The good 1) The food is first rate: No, really. Know that it can't be perfect every time, but the mean for their sandwiches is quite high; though there will be inevitably occasions when your Cali Cheese Steak won't be quite up to snuff (should you order enough of them), the typical issue rocks hard enough to make a lasting impression. I had one today, and it was awesome. 2) Neighborhood, wholesome vibe: It's pretty much inline with what one comes to expect from Albany: family-oriented, decent, and friendly. 3) Pricing is reasonable for sandwiches: Considering that you're paying for both quantity and quality, it's a fair deal. I think I paid $11 and change for my sandwich today, and left feeling like I had gotten my money's worth. The different 1) Masking is not required: I personally appreciate being able to go into a business without a mask. Yes, yes, I know "Danger! Danger! Moral turpitude! Sciiiiiiiiiiiiiiience!" and I also know from the comments that some take an unhealthy joy alerting others to their mistakes and being on the right side of history and blah blah blah moral integrity yada yada I'm outraged beyond words etc. etc.. So this is your alert: if you can't cope, go somewhere else and save your energy for better things. 2) Conservative: I don't know the guy personally, but the picture of John Paul II hanging up next to the photo of the Catholic sized family probably indicates an other than "Progressive" world view. It's not mine, but I don't begrudge someone their beliefs, freaky though they might be. Again, if you can't hang, go somewhere else. Shorter lines for Bob are good sez I. The bad 1) Expect lines and a wait if you go at peak hours: The food is good and people order it. Plus, they're doing everything by hand behind the counter, and some people place giant orders. This old-time Deli is a delightful discovery on Solano Avenue, in Albany just over the Berkeley line. It is not loaded with vegetarian specialties, but meat protein abounds, on good breads with tomatoes, lettucs, onions, pickles, and I almost always opt for a slice of cheese to set of the lamb or roast beef. Tinned sardines are handly for mid-day pick-me-ups, and John stocks avocado oil, fine olive oils, pomegranate juice, and all kinds of salami, olives, pasta. Wine afficianados have an interesting assortment to pick through. The espresso coffees are good and strong, and the people inside are welcoming. Ambiance is very nostalgic. Nothing has really changed. Amazing! Their items for purchase (drinks, canned food) are generally Italian and/or European. Not cheap but that's fine. They did not get the 5 stars due to price. My sandwich ($11 + $1 for cheese) was small relative to what I'm used to. I've lived in New Jersey for the past 16 years and have since altered my standards to a much different level. Actually I'd feel more concerned if I shopped at Andronico's. Anyway, mask or no mask, Zarri's is really the only deli in Berkeley that is one of a kind, not a supermarket. Zarri's is an old school deli, primarily take-out, although it does have one small table with two chairs in the front corner of the store and an outside patio in the back. It's a typical old city Italian style deli with sandwiches, some sides, cheeses, wines, etc. Unfortunately, the sandwiches aren't very good, the meat is sparse, the sauerkraut not very good, and I can't recommend this place based upon what we ordered. I will say that the proprietor is very nice, friendly, and hard-working, and I hope this review is taken in a constructive manner. He could do a lot better with what he has. My guy is an Albany native who grew up on Zarri's sandwiches, there are many like him that love the way they make them. We've been here several times and although I like the sandwiches, I really come here to shop. In addition to fresh meat and cheeses, they have pastas, sauces and ingredients that give me ideas for meals to cook at home. They also have frozen pizza dough that is pretty easy to defrost and use. When we do get sandwiches to enjoy on the patio or to go, I always appreciate the different selections of craft beer/drinks, sides and chips. Zarri's is a sentimental favorite for me. This is my go to deli when I want properly sliced deli meats or specialty Italian grocery items. They also make a wide variety of sandwiches. Need neatly sliced prosciutto for a charcuterie plate or a recipe? This is your spot. They slice it thinly and lay it out on parchment paper so you can easily peal off a lovely paper thin slice. Personally, I prefer spicy coppa. They have a large cheese case with many tempting offerings. Some are slicing deli cheeses, but they have lots of good options for a cheese plate. The grocery section includes specialty imported and domestic items like candied chestnuts, fresh frozen ravioli, Italian cookies, and so much more. They even have an interesting wine selection. This is a family business. They have been there for a long time. How long? I don't know, but I've shopped there for over 15 years. Zarri's is a classic place, full of handpicked imported goods from Italy and the Mediterranean. They have the right cheeses, meats, bread and other great gourmet items. I grew up going to this store and Zarri himself knew a lot about good food. Come by and support an institution in Albany. You can get a sandwich, or pick your own meat, cheese, olives and bread and make some for your family. But I CANNOT BELIEVE I went in the other day and the owner was maskless. I asked him about the mask and he grumbled "health reasons" ...there was what appeared to be a 30yr lady and a teen boy both helping with sandwiches- both maskless...I said- and them? and he said yes. During the course of assembling my sandwich all three touched the sandwich! I should not have paid for the sandwich as I was pretty troubled and threw it away when I left. His thoughts on covid and the community he is serving are staggeringly short minded. I will not be going there again. Rather than a community gem, it is a the epitome of the attitudes which have kept this covid in our midst for way too long- kids out of school, other establishments run out of business.
