    Mortadella Sandwich
    Joshua M.

Modest, small operations deli joint. All of the ingredients were fresh and quality. The person who rang me up knew just the right cheese and condiments to go with my mortadella. The bread was all I could ask for: crunchy and toothsome yet light and airy.

2.5 stars Ordered via Doordash. This review is for the Poor Boy Deluxe. Very subpar for an italian sandwich from a sandwich place. You get maybe 1 or 2 slices of each meat listed in the description with 1 slice of swiss cheese and 2 slices of cheddar wedged between two different slices of meat. The sliced "sour" bread tastes closer to buttermilk than sourdough. The overall effect reminds me of a mom's packed sandwich for school with ham and cheese.

I hate to give a local place a subpar review, but if there is any tuna on the sandwich I just got I certainly can't find it. The liverwurst sandwich I got for my mom also made her unhappy. And my friend's poor boy was, indeed, that. We weren't going to go back, but since we got a nice response from the deli, we will give it another try very soon and then update the review. Maybe the person making the sandwiches was having an off day.

Zarri's Deli is a welcoming traditional grocer and eatery. Their sandwiches are delicious and large enough to comprise a mid-day meal. I have ordered several varieties and have not been disappointed. Individual portions of pasta salads are available to augment the sandwiches, as are tinned sardines and oysters. The range of well cooked traditional Italian-style meats is complete, and in concert with pasta, pastries, sauces, and cheeses, can support any Italian meal project. Amazing fruit juices are 'not from concentrate'. The wine selection supports any meat, fish, or fowl, or social fruit-and-cheese get togethers. Outdoor seating accommodates one to 20 or so diners, and I have enjoyed conversations with more than one chance-met Zarri's customer. There is no drip coffee, but capuccino and latte's are available, and one can make do with an Americano. A coffee and a hot piroshki are excellent morning, noon, or afternoon fare. I appreciate the history and continuity of Zarri's, as well as their excellent customer service. They really care about what they sell and serve.

I love Deli's and this one is great. The owner and staff are very friendly. And the sandwiches are large so its a great meal for me. I love the Cuban sandwich and the Italian pastries as well. Their is a nice outdoor patio to sit and visit with friends also. Thankfully the owner is not a stickler about wearing a mask inside the shop, he honors medical exemptions and leaves it as optional, so I can breathe.

This old-time Deli is a delightful discovery on Solano Avenue, in Albany just over the Berkeley line. It is not loaded with vegetarian specialties, but meat protein abounds, on good breads with tomatoes, lettucs, onions, pickles, and I almost always opt for a slice of cheese to set of the lamb or roast beef. Tinned sardines are handly for mid-day pick-me-ups, and John stocks avocado oil, fine olive oils, pomegranate juice, and all kinds of salami, olives, pasta. Wine afficianados have an interesting assortment to pick through. The espresso coffees are good and strong, and the people inside are welcoming. I recommend Zarri's for early-day or lunch time comestibles.

I needed to pay a utility bill. I'd done it once before and the cashier was very helpful. He told me exactly what to do and I paid the bill quickly and with no trouble. I went back today and scanned the QR code at the kiosk as I'd done before, but the only options the app offered were to pick up cash, deposit the money in a wallet, or send to an account. This was different than last time, so I went to the cashier. She had no idea at all how to use the system. I had to be somewhere so I gave up and went back later. When I got there, I again went to the kiosk and looked at the website it gave for help. That didn't show how to pay a pill, so I again scanned the QR code and saw the same options. I called the help number. The woman helped me through the transaction and said I should go to the cashier. I did. Same woman, still with no idea how the payment system worked. She said she'd never had to pay a bill that way, which is beside the point. Cashiers should know how the service they offer works. I asked if I could speak to someone who could help me. She said she'd ask the manager to come. A woman wearing about an inch of makeup, white lipstick, and painted-on hair and eyebrows arrived, glowering and chewing gum like a cow chewing her cud. She wore a badge that said "shift supervisor." She gave no indication of being interested in helping. I explained that I'd paid a bill there before but was having trouble this time. She looked online and found the transaction. I handed her a debit card. She said I could only use cash. I said that I didn't recall using cash the previous time, that I thought I'd sent the cash to the store and then they'd paid the bill. She said I could only use cash. Throughout this, no indication of being willing to help a customer, just disdain and chewing her cud. I said the cashier had said she'd get the manager, and asked if could talk to the manager. She said she'd get her. I waited for five or ten minutes and gave up. I've researched how to make this payment, and it appears I need to bring cash to the store. I don't recall doing that last time, but maybe I did, or maybe the helpful cashier directed me to the ATM there and then helped me with the rest of the transaction. Unfortunately, this place is the only location anywhere near that I can make this transaction, so I'll go back to do that, but then never again.
