Located on the south side of the Arno river, Zeb is a great place to grab a hearty lunch before a hike towards Piazzale Michelangelo for a nearly 360 view of Firenze. The chef has an unpretentious take on fine cuisine and a brimming wine selection, making this osteria five-stars worthy. My boyfriend and I both ordered pastas (pesto with sun-dried tomato and white truffle) paired with Merlot. Both dishes were delectably good. Additionally impressive was the fact that even with the recent lackluster harvest of truffles in the region, my plate was still drenched in white truffles. As we looked around, the locals were enjoying vegetable lasagnas. Several Trip Advisor reviews criticize the service, which is far from the truth. Alberto and his mother are sweet as pie. Don't be pushy or close-minded tourists and you'll be treated like royalty. To put my money where my mouth is, we made dinner reservations as we finished our lunch at Zeb's, and will be back a third or fourth time. Pasta was delicious but the chef serving you is arrogant and expect no service here. We had to wait 40 min before he could even look at us to ask if we wanted dessert because 'we are on vacation and he has to work.' What an awful feeling we left with. My husband had the rabbit dish special and it was much too salty but we were scared to tell the server/ chef and my osso bucco was very average. It felt like he was doing us a huge favor just to take our order. Don't go, there is better service and tons of delicious food in Florence. Zeb is a recommended restaurant on the Michelin Guide so I decided to try it out and experience the cooking of a highly respected establishment. The owner/Head chef greeted me and went over the menu. I decided to get the truffle pasta for my first dish. The pasta was fresh, buttery and tasted great with the dark truffle. For the second dish I ordered the eggplant Parmesan. It was fantastic and filled with rustic flavor. The cheesy eggplant and marinara sauce complement each other in providing a light, yet flavorful harmony. The only problem I had with the dish was that it was slightly cold in the center, which took away from the dish as a whole. For dinner I ordered the chocolate mousse cake with pink salt crystals. The mousse was rich and went well with some of the pink salt crystals. However, the salt was a little overpowering and could have been left out of the dish. The service is great and the chef will recommend his favorite dishes to you if needed. The food is great and it is a great culinary experience sitting at a bar, while eating some fine food! read more

I could dine here three times a week and in fact, during our week in Firenze, July 18-24th, we dined here on two occasions. The pear ravioli is out of this world. Speechless. These carefully made meals made us weep they were so incredible. The owner and his mother take meticulous care in creating seasonal, artful dishes bursting with flavor. We ordered the wild boar paparedelle and the spaghetti with truffle. This gets a 6 on my star meter especially because there is no garlic at all in his preparation of majority dishes - even the pesto. Wha what?!??? Pesto without garlic? In heaven. (In case you didn't notice I don't eat garlic due to an extremely severe food intolerance). Owner also bottles his own wine and we I will be back to purchase a bottle. Loved ZEB for lunch, the warm, meticulous service and the meal that brought home style Italian food to an elegant level. This is no typical lunch counter. The first course, the pasta course, is freshly made. The co-owner goes over all the choices with you for every dish in English if needed. The second course was sometimes pre-made that morning, other times coming out hot, sitting behind glass in front of you (see my pics). That meant from the moment we walked in mouths were watering and the difficult decision around what to order started. We ended up having Osso Buco and Meatballs and perfect PIcci Pasta with tasty red sauce with wild boar as well as the Pear ravioli and a glass of wine. Now I wish I had tried the truffle ravioli as we heard it was AMAZING from the guys next to us. You can ask for small side dishes for the second course of veggies, we got the fennel and artichoke. It was a HUGE amount of food and we could not finish all of it ($60 Euro for 2). Other than me thinking there was a bit too much pasta water with the pear ravioli the taste was sweet, light and really different. The meatballs were wonderful, best I had in Florence in fact! If I had to do it over again I would ask which second course dishes I could combine, such as one meatball and a few small pork ribs, a stuffed rabbit slice or stewed beef (Peposo). I know the owner said some dishes you could not split in half, for instance, Osso Bucco. Memorable experience and it will be on my list as a must for my next trip to Florence.Did I mention it is one street across from the Clet museum on Via Dell'Olmo 8r? Great way to have a brief excursion after to get to know about that political street art as well. I recommend sharing dishes so you get to experience many Tuscan flavors in this incredible restaurant in this quaint Florence neighborhood. read more

Where do I start!? Headed to zebs for lunch today after walking around in the forte belvedere area. The restaurant is very chic and the service takes it to the next level. Albert explained all the pasta first courses and second courses. We had the spaghetti with ricotta and sundried tomatoes, and the ravioli with pumpkins. They were outstanding! I was stuffed at the end of the first course, but the rest of the food was laid out buffet style in front of the counter, so we had to try more. Get the meatballs and the peposo (Tuscan beef stew). They were incredible! Don't be in a rush here.. The service flows at its own pace and it adds to the experience. Just enjoy a second glass of wine and more food. Zeb was recommended to us by a tour guide during our stay in Florence. Every bit of our dinner was fantastic. This restaurant is run by a gentleman and his mother. He interacts with the guests while preparing meals and actually brings the menu around to the guests on a blackboard from which he explains each item. I told the owner that their cooking reawakened tastes and memories from my childhood when my Italian grandmothers would prepare Sunday dinners. It was that good. I was surprised to see any disparaging reviews relating to the owner's demeanor. We found him to be an absolute gentleman, truly passionate about what he was creating for us. read more

As somebody who gets great joy out of the process of eating and dining out and being in new places, Zeb was almost a spiritual experience for me. My wife and I just got back from our 3 week European honeymoon. I just had to leave a review for this place. Out of all the countries and cities we visited (6 in total), our favorite meal was at Zeb. We were fortunate enough to get a walk in seat for lunch. We both ordered a pasta dish each for the first course. Of course we had to try the black truffle spaghetti. Came with plenty of truffle (we couldn't even finish it). We also tried the ricotta ravioli with mozzarella and zucchini. Both dishes came out great. You can taste the freshness of the ingredients and the pasta was cooked perfectly. I have to say it was the best pasta we've ever had. We were already full from the first course but decided to try something from the second course since everything was so delicious. We ended up trying the meatballs. They were very soft and flavorable, but slightly on the salty side. Nevertheless, Zeb was the best place we ate at all throughout Europe. I would highly recommend giving this place a try. Also, it is a good idea to take a picture of the menu outside before heading in. Since the menu changes daily, they do not have a "paper" menu for you to look at inside. The chef/waiter will let you know what is available on the daily menu, but it is a lot to take in when someone is trying to tell you 6-8 dishes. read more

After confronting the one server for the whole restaurant after we waited 30 minutes for him to acknowledge us was, "you are on vacation and I am working" we left as soon as possible after that. This was my worst dining experience since I arrived in Italy five days ago. I ate through Venice & Milan and was really excited to eat at my FIRST restaurant in Florence! Zeb took that excitement and turned it into regret. I thought we may not get in because it seems so popular on Yelp so I called to make a reservation the day of and got in on my request of 7:30pm. We were the first to arrive since that's when the restaurant opens, and were greeted (if that's what you wanna call it), by a socially awkward man who was the owner and the waiter. We got our water, wine and bread and placed our 1st course order of white truffle ravioli and the pear ravioli. This is when it started going downhill. The restaurant started to fill up and since it's just the two of them (mother cooks and son is the server), we were completely neglected. Still, I'm okay with that because having been a server for 10+ years before, I understand when someone is slammed with patrons that walk in at the same time. Next, my food was finally coming out to me but wait, it was the wrong dish. She made the truffle spaghetti instead if the ravioli and the son noticed it before it reached the table so he whispered that it was the wrong dish and sends her back into the kitchen. I would've accepted the dish made in error but oh well, let's just wait another 10-15 minutes. When our dish finally made its way out the kitchen for the second time, although it had really good flavor, my ravioli was undercooked. Not al dente, but hard and undercooked. Also, black truffles instead of white. Did they think I was just a dumb American girl who wouldn't notice? The pear ravioli was fine but nothing special. Now, the waiting game of ordering my second course... Because of the style of the seating (we sat across most of the diners), we could see that the four groups that arrived after us got to place their second course order before us. That's frustrating but whatever, we'll wait even though it wasn't our fault they messed up on our dishes. We ordered only one dish this time because my husband wasn't really intrigued with the offerings. I was trying to order that slow cooked beef called Peposo but couldn't remember the name so I ended up ordering the other slow cooked beef on the menu. That turned out to be thinly sliced roast beef (think deli meat thin) with some kind of sauce on it. It was extremely salty so I couldn't eat it. My husband didn't want to waste it so he ate as much as he could but still was unable to finish it. We left without dessert because we couldn't wait to get out of there. With only four nights in Florence before we head to Rome, every meal counts!!! The last dish summarizes how Zeb made me feel... SALTY with REGRET. read more

Best meal we ate our entire trip in Italy. WOW. We came across this place while walking around the neighbourhood. My first course was a pumpkin ravioli. The pasta was handmade, fresh and had the perfect texture. The sauce and the ravioli filling complemented perfectly. This dish was the highlight of the meal. My husband had a parpadelle which was very tasty as well (a little on the salty side). We then had venison, which was melt in your mouth tender. My boyfriend and i Just visited this restaurant based on others' high reviews on zeb. Food 3.5/5 - i don't remember the exact names of the pasta but i had the one with pears and my boyfriend had the one with just truffle oil (last on the menu). we agreed that mine was tasty but his wasn't as satisfying as we preferred something with a bit more sauce. This brings me to the service... Service 3/5 - We ordered the truffle pasta because we didn't even know what exactly we ordered. We didnt want to ask the chef anymore questions because he had an annoyed look the whole time. It was really hard to get him to crack a smile at all. I was nervous when he came by to read us the menu for the second course because i didn't know if i would understand him the first time around. And yes, the chef was in charge of reading the menus, selling his wine and serving the food. This was quite odd to us as we thought the chef would be inside making the food... One of the few times he smiled was when he asked if we liked to try his wine or have dessert. When we politely said no he immediately dropped his smile to looking annoyed again. It was only at the end of the meal when we tipped him he was genuinely happy.. Food would have tasted better if the experience was more positive and customer oriented. read more

The menu changes I think everyday depending on what the market had in store for them.. There's a chalk board for the menu of the day which would give you choices for 1st and 2nd courses. We had the truffle ravioli and some kind of beef stew.. And wanted to share an appetizer but the waiter had his nose too high up in the air probably thinking that we're just like all the other stupid tourists who don't know how to eat "italian" style as we only got 2 mains. I honestly would have left but really around that time, everything was almost already closing so we just had to suck it up to eat. Lol overall, food was great and of course they had a good selection of wine too.. This is one of the best meals my husband and I have had in Europe, and we've been traveling for 3 months, so that says a lot! Everything here must be delicious, but please, please order the ravioli with white truffles and ricotta. If you want one of those meals you'll remember forever, this is it. The spaghetti with black truffles is a close second, but nothing will rock your world like the ravioli. We also shared the peposo, a traditional Tuscan stewed beef served with various vegetables. Also unbelievably delicious. I've had stewed beef and it's never tasted this moist and flavorful. For dessert I had the chocolate pie and thought, well, I can never have chocolate pie anywhere ever again. Nothing could ever come close to the richness and perfectly balanced sweetness of this pie. We both had the sweet white wine which went perfectly with each course. As if the food weren't enough, both mother and son who run this place are charming, friendly, and don't seem to mind running through each item of the menu in English. Although we only order antipasti items, everything we experienced was awesome. The meats and cheeses were perfectly prepared along with the artichokes. The wine was also fantastic.
