Dr. Goldman was such a sweet person that when she retired, I wondered if I would like the new dentist as much. Well, I just had my cleaning and couldn't be happier! I had a good, thorough cleaning, and then Dr. Malhotra came in to talk about my teeth and asked me if I was interested in fixing some chips in my front teeth with bonding. I had had these chips for decades and didn't like them, but never knew there was any good way to fix them. Ten painless minutes later, my teeth were evenly shaped with no sign of the chips. Dr. Malhotra was extremely careful and shaped them beautifully! I had no idea this was even possible! Beforehand, they ran my insurance and told me the cost and it was surprisingly inexpensive. I honestly don't understand what is going on with these reviews. I scheduled a cleaning and exam, and went in today, and the office looks nothing like the picture that's online. It seems like it was a private practice that was recently bought out by some sort of private equity situation. Dr. Toloue is just about the best dentist you'll ever find. I've had issues with my teeth from adolescence, and have been to at least a dozen other dentists. She gives it to you straight, knows all the angles, lays out your options, and explains the pros and cons of each. She's meticulous, thoughtful, empathetic, driven, and talented. Her technique is better than an oral surgeon's. I've had just about every procedure done with her, and never felt a bit of pain. Definitely can't say that about any of the others. She's also extremely generous with her time and I've noticed that she's routinely working overtime. My issue with Dr. Ruth was an insurance v. private pay matter. The work he did was fine. At the time I found him to be sufficiently well mannered and professional, however, I thought what he pulled was unethical. I was referred to him from another dentist's office because they were overloaded with emergencies. This was many years ago so I will try to recount the story as best as I can. Dr. Ruth had me secure a large payment from a family member, but not the entire amount. I don't recall why, perhaps I did not have a credit card with me. I asked him if he were a Blue Cross provider and I don't remember what he said. I was a young man at the time and the price of the procedure was a lot for me. Nevertheless, with dentistry I have never skimped. In fact, that is the one area of expenditures where I will pay whatever it costs to ensure top quality. Dr. Ruth sent me a bill for the balance of the procedure's total. I checked my Blue Cross plan and as it turned out he was in network and by contract was obliged to accept the insurance amount. I only recall that I put a claim in and it was paid but Dr. Ruth insisted that he wanted the total (being the private pay cost he initially quoted me and billed me for.) I told him he could not do that by law and he wasn't hearing me and indicated that the matter would go into collection. It did. For many years I took a credit hit because I wasn't going to pay him a fee that he was not entitled to and in fact, he should have returned money to me in that even my partial payment was more than the insurance company allowed him to collect. I thought to myself, this man makes a good living and he is highly skilled and has every right to charge what he wishes, however, I was paying a fortune for my insurance and there was a reason why--it was great insurance and covered so many things. If he had been honest with me and said from the start, "I am contracted as Blue Cross provider and want more money, I would have been fine with that. In my view, it was his tough luck that he had a patient who had been referred to him that if he were to see, he was in turn obliged to see at a lower cost. Had he elected not to do the job I would have been fine with it but the entire thing was sleazy. There are two types of doctors and dentists in this world aside from the skill. Those that are mensches and those that are not. Dr. Ruth is not. He warned me that he would go after me with collections, I told him I would never give him more money, and today I am in turn doing the same to him by writing this so it will follow him. That said, the work he did was fine and to many reading this, that is first and foremost what matters--but watch his ethics when it comes to billing. Keep in mind, in those days having doctors and dentists registered with the plan was a big part of why one selected the major medical they did. read more

I would not recommend this dentist. He used incredibly poor judgement on an oral surgery performed on me. He removed an impacted canine and caused so much bone damage/loss that I had to undergo years of surgeries and eventual implants to correct the bad work that he did. It cost me around $60,000 when all was said and done. I did not go back to him and would have sued him if it wasn't so difficult to hold these hacks accountable. There is also a legal statute of limitations that is only a couple of years. After the surgery I went back for a follow up (this was before I knew he had caused so much bone damage). He walked into the room and injected my gums with Novocain and then realized he did not have to, it was only a check up/follow up. Idiot. It would take quite a while to realize how much damage he had actually caused. BE AWARE OF THIS DENTIST. Go anywhere but here. read more

What an amazing dentist, my goodness! I feel so lucky for her brilliance and humanity. I was gutted when I found out my beloved dentist retired but I am in the best, most capable hands now! This dentist is certainly the finest I've ever known (and I loved my retired dentist...although he botched a front tooth composite right before retiring)...Dr. Toloue is a brilliant artist first and foremost. Her attention to detail and utter precision can be felt while she's working in your mouth. I feel like she performs dentistry like Yo-yo Ma plays the cello. I know this is going to make me sound batshit crazy, but I didn't really want her stop working in my mouth, it felt existentially important to witness her mastery. To begin with, Dr Toloue gives weirdly tolerable novocaine shots with utter compassion and kindness, managing expectations regarding duration and degree of the pain, I was in awe... This is a vibrant and good-humored and compassionate and interesting person. She's sprightly but yet serious about her work. Her lovely new office feels like a solarium, it's so bright and welcoming and clean and lovely with her own lovely paintings on the wall. Take note of her new address, 38-06 Greenpoint Ave, Long Island City, NY 11101, as she moved from a space in Sunnyside but Yelp hasn't updated the info yet. Her front desk receptionist/manager is so friendly, smart, diligent, and helpful. Her kindness and professionalism during the first call I placed instilled confidence from the start. The practice follows every safety protocol possible to limit risk of exposure to Covid. They only allow one person in the waiting room at a time and Dr. Toloue wears two masks (a surgical mask and a plastic one). This obviously might change if the rate of Covid infection goes down but I was so grateful (as my friend told me that his dentist is a Covid denier who doesn't wear a mask at all!). The office also runs basically on time, which is unheard of... I swear this Dr. Toloue is the unicorn of dentists. But let's get down to business. A lot of Yelp reviews of dentists seem to focus on the cleanliness of the office or the free toothbrush but you never get a word about the specific work done. Dr. Toloue had to construct composites on my two front teeth, filling a cavity in the one and filling in a chipped area in the other. I have learned you can't just go anywhere when the work is that visible, you must enlist an artist of a dentist... This woman is just the best of the best. I have not great insurance and she accepts it, I would call to see if she accepts your insurance...If you don't have insurance, I would imagine she's fair with her pricing. I asked her what she charges for Invisalign and she certainly charges on the low end of what dentists charge in NYC for the aligners (I won't mention the rate because she was just giving me a ballpark figure). She did not hard-sell invisalign at all (I asked her if she offered it) and she's not a dentist who will lie and say you need all your old fillings out (when I was combing reviews on yelp, I found that a bunch of dentists have done this...and I had a dentist years ago who lied and said I did need all mine out, so just putting it out there and this dentist is as honest as they come). This brilliant artist of a dentist could be raking it in on Park Avenue but she's a humanist with a neighborhood practice in Long Island City (near Sunnyside). My front teeth look and feel to the touch of my tongue better than they have in my entire adult life. She just really balanced everything and made everything look so natural. I feel I can smile again without shame (even though there's nothing in the world to smile about right now, save for this happy dental experience). On March 29 I had a root canal done with Dr. Faitlowicz. I was greeted by her assistant who was professional, friendly and competent. I was a little nervous as I never had this procedure before and I do have some issues, including a sensitive gag reflex. The doctor assured me that I would be fine. I had read that some people experienced a lot of pain during the procedure but was reassured that I should and would not feel any pain. I did not feel any pain during the procedure. I have been in the care of Dr Ruth for many years. He is without a doubt the most caring and talented oral surgeon. One time I cracked an implant screw and he just wouldn't give up trying to unscrew it even though he had a plane to catch! He was successful, saving me from starting the whole implant process over again. This was one of the worst experiences I have had, and I've had numerous dental procedures. First, the consult was pretty much nonexistent. I was told the basics - no food or water after midnight; stop aspirin and Advil; have someone drive you home. I received no additional pre-surgery instructions other than the basic verbal direction given to me by the person answering the phone. When I met him, I noted that his bedside manner was a bit lackluster. In fact, he was a bit short and aloof, which surprised me, given that I heard he was very nice. It didn't matter so much, because I had received excellent reviews about his surgical expertise. Mistake on my part. However, when I asked too many questions or expressed concern about the possibility of pain or a dry socket, he was very dismissive and basically had the attitude of "just hush up and trust me." I was put under general anesthesia; unfortunately, I "roused" during the procedure, slightly. That is pretty much one of my biggest nightmares. I feel that it is his responsibility to keep close watch on my vitals to see if I'm coming out of "twilight time." Moreover, I expressed concern about a dry socket, because as we all know, that is a significant fear and complication with dental surgery. I was told that it just "sometimes happens, but just don't drink out of a straw or smoke." He failed to warn me about all the other issues that can cause a dry socket. The post-op instructions were very general and did not cover all of the contributing factors to dry socket, eg, exercise; don't sleep with your head flat the first night; stay away from warm or chunky liquids; don't make any sudden movements with your head to possibly dislodge the clot, etc. It's all about making sure that you don't dislodge the clot or you are in for one heck of a ride. Yes, I got a dry socket. And I thought I was careful, but there were things that I just didn't know concerning care for the clot. I can tell you that I have never had worst pain in my entire life. And I am tough as an old boot. I called his office, and they were very dismissive, stating that it was "unlikely." They were supposed to call me back the next day, but no one checked on me. After dealing with excruciating pain for the following several days, I consulted with another oral surgeon who confirmed the dry socket and proceeded to put in a clove dressing to help with the pain. Folks, there's nothing you can do once you get the dry socket. You have to wait for it to heal, and I can tell you it was some of the worse pain, evah. High test pain killers do NOTHING! Basically, the experience was disappointing. From the lack of preparation and consultation to the non-follow up and zero aftercare, he is not what I consider to be an exceptional surgeon. Being a good surgeon is more than just having technical skill. I know that dry sockets can happen, and it is unfortunate, but I feel that I was unprepared on how to care for myself after surgery. And, I also don't appreciate smug attitude and doctors who are unwilling to take the time to address all your concerns or questions. There are too many good oral surgeons in New York. I suggest you consult with another before making your selection with Dr. Ruth. read more

Let me qualify this review with the fact that I hate going to the dentist, and I dislike impersonal people, and I have very high expectations of the professionals I use for both dental and Medical services. I also refuse to ever BS a review on Yelp for any reason, so you'll get the full experience. I hope this helps put you at ease when choosing this dental surgeon. Dr. Ruth was a God-send in an emergency that I had with a cracked tooth. I was very scared, and horrified at the yelp reviews of some of the other surgeons, and I'd heard all the horror stories of pain and waiting times, and the unprofessional treatment people had experienced at other offices. The office was clean, and there was a very kind young lady who assisted me with getting set up with paperwork upon showing up.There was a decent assortment of fashion magazines, and some light music playing while I waited. I was taken to the back approximately 15-20 minutes after my appointment which was amazing and very acceptable. The dentist assistant took some X-ray's in the room , and then the dentist came in shortly thereafter . I was quick to explain to him the situation about my tooth, and to ask him his professional opinion about whether an extraction was needed. He was very kind and open to listening to my concerns and addressing them all. I decided to go with the extraction. During the extraction he let me know there'd be pressure, but if I felt pain to let him know. Sure enough, at a certain point in the process, I felt a little pain and jumped, and he gave me a heavenly cocktail which then allowed the rest of the extraction to go without any issue. I'm very thankful for the kindness and professionalism of his staff, and if you happen to read this far, I'm sure you'll be happy you chose this surgeon over many others in the city. Cheers. Worst medical experience I've ever had with my son. My son got four wisdom teeth out and was in excruciating pain a few hours after the surgery. Unfortunately my son has had several extensive surgeries and never have I seen him in so much pain. When I called Dr Ruth about it, he told me level ten pain was normal!!!! As I watched my child in agony asking for relief I called again and my concern was again dismissed. After the third call with absolutely no solution, my son begged me to take him to the emergency room which we did. It was not until he received intravenous pain medication did the pain subside. After that, he remained in pretty bad pain for several days and uncomfortable for close to two weeks. As a parent, I cannot fathom a world in which a doctor could so easily dismiss a patient in agony. What I find most frustrating is that had my son been given preemptive pain meds before his anesthesia wore off, this awful experience could most likely have been avoided. Went in for extraction of wisdom tooth. My dentist didn't have any availibility so referred me here. Office runs on time, doctor is good and quick. My only complaint or rather 1 thing they could improve is counselling pre surgery or addressing concerns. All they do is handover a printed sheet of post surgery care. I saw Dr Ruth for 5 minutes and was pushed to the surgery. he extracted 2 teeth under general anesthesia. i was out in 1 hour- painless but bled a little for next 24 hrs as expected. Today, I am 25% less wise and I now am officially white trash. Yesterday I said goodbye to teeth #'s 31 and 32. Bad teeth affect your transplant status - so, #32 (the wisdom tooth) had to come out ASAP. On a side note - years of kidney disease can take a toll on your calcium levels in your body which in turn can wreak havoc on your teeth. Fingers crossed, 31 &32 are my sacrificial lambs, and the dental issues will stop there. Enough about me - Now on to Dr. Ruth. (he is a man, a very nice man - Gary Ruth, DDS) The practice is busy ( I had a long wait for a 2:30 appointment) But, they took a really cool x-ray of my whole head - really It was awesome, and I wanted a copy - but I am cheap so, I just marveled at the technology. He office staff are hip and professional. (thanks Victor for apologizing for running late) And his hygienists are efficient and sweet. I can't comment on the price - because I won't know until I get my insurance statement. Dr Ruth was totally with it as far as my prep for surgery (Dialysis makes everything more difficult) and he has thoughtful and prepared to help me with my after care. Dr. Gary Ruth is absolutely phenomenal!!!! I had put off getting my wisdom teeth extracted forever because I did not want anyone digging through my gums. However, my mouth decided to ring in 2012 by allowing one of my wisdom teeth to erupt through my gums. It was so incredibly painful and resulted in my gums being inflamed or "angry" as Dr. Ruth put it. This left me with two erupted wisdom teeth with two more still hiding in my gums. I knew I had to get one tooth out, so with a bit of sensibility and bravery, I decided to take the plunge and have them all taken out. My dentist recommended Dr. Gary Ruth to me and said that he is the "best oral surgeon. I trust him with everyone!" Within a few days I was sitting in the waiting room and first had an x-ray taken. Dr. Ruth walked in the office calmly and immediately complimented my teeth and explained what was going on and that he could take one tooth out, or all four. He was so calm, friendly, and funny I didn't feel nervous or skeptical at all. I told him he might as well take all four out. He distracted me with a random conversation and some laughs and put me under general anesthesia. I literally woke up in what felt like a few minutes and felt absolutely no pain. I wasn't sore. Everyone there was so attentive and caring and Dr. Ruth was right, it was "the most pleasant and best experience" I would ever have. I highly recommend him. He really put my fears aside. In fact, he is so superb I felt 90% better by the second day and 100% by the third, I kid you not. When I had a question a month later, in regards to what I was able to eat again, his assistants were incredibly kind and attentive! I'm a chicken shit so naturally I waited until I'm 30 years to finally get my wisdom teeth pulled. And of course, one of them just had to be infected and just had to make my front teeth so crooked that I was forced to finally get it done. I almost want to cry when I have to go into the dentist for a cleaning. My threshold for pain is like zero or negative something. Dr Ruth is almost Superman or Green Lantern. I freaking love this man for making the procedure painless. His staff is fabulous. Upon arriving, I was told my insurance needed a referral and I couldn't do the procedure without one. When I heard this, I was like 'FML, there goes my day' but instead of shooing me away, the staff actually referred me to a dentist in the same building so I was able to come right back within half an hour and get those stubborn teeth out. 5 stars for the staff. Dr Ruth is downright cool. You walk in and he is just beaming with positivity. Immediately you're put at ease. I opted for the "martini in my arm" as Dr Ruth describes it. I literally don't even remember falling asleep. Next thing I know, he's all done. And I'm like, "mama say whhaaaaat?" I thought he was telling me he was done sticking a needle in my arm but the whole thing was finished in the blink of an eye. I'm writing this because I want to add confirmation that Dr. Ruth did an amazing job taking out my wisdom teeth, but I hope readers won't take advantage of him after reading this. Dr. Ruth and I learned that my insurance won't cover the full body anesthesia right before the procedure. He knew I was a student and wasn't able to afford it out of pocket. I told him it was fine, I just have to local anesthesia. Out of concern for the pain I would have, he waived the cost of the full body anesthesia. The wisdom teeth extraction have got to be more pleasant than even getting a filling done. I woke up, felt really sleepy and 2 teeth lighter. Napped again on the reclined dental seat next door to wait out the sleepiness, and was pretty much ready to go after I woke up after the procedure. So here's a testament to a technically skilled surgeon who's generous enough to give someone unable to afford the privilege, a first class procedure. read more

A friend who's a DDS referred me to Dr Ruth and I went to see him - the consult was very chill and he's super nice and personable. Had to have an emergency tooth pulling and no insurance this time. My regular dentist, Dr. Picone (GREAT GUY!!) called Dr. Ruth and I was seen in under an hour. I was put under and have to say it was a lovely experience. Dr. Ruth was as warm and funny as ever and his staff is just great. Post-op I ran into some problems - not sure if it was my reaction to codeine or something I ate, but it was 8 hours of really debilitating symptoms. My husband got so worried he came home early from work and called Dr. Ruth but since it was after office hours we got his answering service. They were so lovely and caring over the phone. When you're frightened or worried that makes a huge difference. This answering service and the young woman my husband spoke to was so personable and concerned and within 15 minutes if not sooner we got a call back from Dr. Ruth. Today I had a minor question and again since it was after hours we got the answering service. Lovely lovely lovely young woman took our question and AGAIN Dr. Ruth called back within 15 if not less minutes. This is old-school, old fashion, GREAT doctoring. My experience with Dr. Ruth was incredibly positive! I came in with a unique scenario, having two large cysts on my upper and lower jaw, and one of my wisdom teeth was pushed into my sinus cavity. While I was initially very anxious about what lie ahead of me, Dr. Ruth was calm, caring, and excellent at explaining clearly what exactly was going on with my teeth, and how he was going to proceed. While the initial biopsy of the cysts was done in his office (a quick procedure, done efficiently), dr Ruth's connection to the Mt Sinai hospital allowed me to have my larger operation there for safety reasons. If you need a root canal, make an appt with Dr. Faitlowicz! Recently my primary dentist told me that I needed to get a root canal... yay.... and she referred me to Dr. Faitlowicz, and let me tell you, I could not have been happier that I had the procedure done with her. If you need a root canal see her. Her staff is very nice, friendly and will answer any questions you may have about the procedure, which help put me at ease, seeing as this was the first time ever having this done. Dr. Faitlowicz is also excellent. She keeps you updated on every part of the procedure, is constantly asking if you feel pain, so that she can numb up the area a bit more so you are comfortable, and takes great care in making sure the job is done right and that the area is properly sealed once done, so there is no chance of infection. One area I was nervous about was the post op pain factor, but I have to say, its not that bad. Like I said she does such a great job during the procedure, that when you are done, you really only need to take some Aleve or extra strength Tylenol. So, in closing, if you need to get a root canal, try to see Dr. Faitlowicz. You'll be glad you did! read more
