They should try a little harder to make the place look more welcoming. I did the 50 min head spa and it felt like more brushing of the hair than massaging. Also, she was brushing so much that it started burning my head and didn't even feel good. You're also in one big room full of multiple beds next to each other so there's not any privacy and you can hear everything so it's not very relaxing. My friend, sister, and I booked almost two months ahead of time for this place and we were so excited and ready for our heads to be pampered. The day finally we came and we made the voyage from the east valley. We arrived right on time and the two girls working quickly came out from the back and greeted us. My sister and I had our appts together but my friends was an hour later so she sat and waited at the front. The room where the treatment takes place is pretty big. There is no privacy though so you can see and hear other people if there is any. My treatment started as soon as I laid down. I put the pillow under my knees and used the blanket for some warmth. She started on my facial (add on to any service for an extra cost) and she took her time. I asked for medium pressure and she did just that. The facial took about 20 minutes and my face felt very relaxed during and after and it felt smooth. Next she started on my head. My favorite part was when she brushed out my hair gently and used the scalp massager. It also felt really good when she scrubbed my scalp and used a lot of shampoo. My scalp was loving it! Every product that was used whether it was on my face or head smelled really good and felt good. Time went by quickly and she wrapped up my hair once it was all done. I was then told I could head on over to the bathroom and brush out my hair. My sister and I both finished at the same time so we were both back there and we were also told we could use any of the styling products that they had on the counter. Overall we all enjoyed our service. The girls were friendly and no where did our service feel rushed. We paid almost $100 for the service and it was well worth it. Zen Spa is located in a strip mall on North Avenue in Phoenix. For starters, I would rate my experience a 3.5 out of 5. I was very nervous to try this scalp treatment because of my hair type. When I scheduled my appointment, I asked the staff member if the hair technicians have experience working with textured hair, and they said yes. I made sure to detangle my hair before my appointment to prevent any matting. I also brought my detangling brush and conditioning products just in case something went left. Nathan was extremely receptive to feedback after my treatment. At first, he took a brush to my dry hair/ scalp which is a NO NO with textured hair. I was on the verge of stopping within the first 10 mins of my appointment. Once the massage started, things turned around. Nathan used rosemary oil to stimulate my scalp. He also used a specialized steamer to help enhance my relaxation and purify my scalp. The actual massage itself was very good. Right after my treatment, I advised him to use a spray bottle or add some sort of product to textured hair before combing or brushing. Overall, he did a good job with the massage. My final feedback would be to have some sort of 5 min consultation before the service begins. I thought I was literally going to get massaged on my head neck and upper shoulders the entire time. Nope, brushed my scalp a lot and did some scrape thing on my scalp. Got very little massage. Lots of water in my face. A couple things for improvement: 1. Have a conversation with client on what to expect 2. Give eye covering or washcloth over eyes 3. Blow dry hair at the end complimentary if we choose 4. Better beds and check in with client maybe halfway through the apt I say give it a try. It just wasn't for me and I'm sooooo bummed. read more

Not really sure where to begin. Please read to the end, I think I was recorded without my knowledge/permission and lied to when I asked about it. I went in for an introductory service and was extremely disappointed. For starters, the gua sha was completely skipped. The massage had next to no pressure. The "invigorating" scalp massage was so gentle that when I got up I realized my hair was still full of conditioner. I then had to ask for a brush so I could brush out my own sopping wet hair. The robes are full of other people's hair. All of them. I checked and finally settled on one with only a few strands. Furthermore, the water was oscillating between tepid and lukewarm. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I will say the owner did come by and heard me out. She rewashed my hair, and I can confirm her pressure was consistent with what I was expecting when I booked this service.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They also gave me 50% off, but if it were my business I wouldn't have been comfortable charging a penny for that experience. I almost didn't leave a review, but I think I noticed a recording app open on the owner's phone as I sat down for a blow dry. I asked her about it, and she told me it was the ring app so she could see what was happening in the salon. I also have ring for a business as well, and this screen did not look familiar to me. The screen I saw had a red stop/start button on it. I recognize this is a one party state, whatever, but there's obviously cameras all over the salon so if she really had taken that extra step to record our conversation, I do find that really invasive and unnecessary. And on top of that, I don't think I got the full truth when I asked TWICE about it. I just don't really understand the point of lying. I know what I saw was definitely NOT the ring app. Long story short, just avoid this place. I appreciate the effort the owner made to correct things, but the whole recording thing was super strange and I'm definitely not comfortable going back here. (p.s. the smell of this shampoo is so strong it's giving me a massive headache. I've already tried to wash it out and it still smells. Yesterday, I treated myself to a Zen Ritual for Face & Scalp performed by Brianna. OMG! From the perspective of the service, this was bliss from start to finish. Brianna took me to a new level of relaxation. I have stress-related psoriasis which impacts my scalp, so I was looking for a natural treatment. My scalp is looking great today, much better than when I use the pharmaceutical therapies prescribed by a dermatologist. I was the only client at the time, so I was not impacted by others' treatments. However, if there were others, it would have been distracting. I enjoyed the Tranquil package at my appointment today and it was wonderful. I was so relaxed that I even nodded off a couple of times. You can smell the wonderful aromas the second you open the door and I felt immediately at ease. The treatment room has multiple beds but since you don't have to remove any clothing, I felt very comfortable here. I loved how dark and relaxing it felt with cool, dim lights that could change colors. I was offered a blanket and it was so soft and comfortable. They have a pillow for under your knees, but I could've used a little more cushion in the actual table. By the end of my treatment, my back was a little sore, but I didn't really mind with how amazing everything else was. They started with the facial and then the scalp treatments. Everything felt so nice and smelled so nice that I let myself fully relax. My parents gave me a gift card here for an early Christmas present so I booked on Friday and came today (Sunday)! It was pretty busy, they were definitely booked. There is a room with all the tables and sinks. I do think it would be a bit nicer if they had partitions between so it's not like you can just see all the other clients but that wasn't a big deal at all. I did the 35 minute service and it seemed like the perfect amount of time, I did feel pretty lightheaded towards the very very end. It was super relaxing overall and the staff was nice. The experience was very peaceful. Great head massage too. It smelled really good too, my hair smells great and feels soft. I didn't pay for the blow dry, I just brought a claw clip so I wouldn't get my clothes wet, but they do have a blow dryer so you can dry your own hair. I've had facials and massages before where they talk the whole time and that is something I find a bit annoying so I am glad this was a quiet experience with minimal talking. I think it's definitely worth the price and I am glad that I had the opportunity to go. They have beard treatments so I plan to book for my husband sometime! read more

I wanted to express my disappointment with the service I had today. I booked the 50 min head spa treatment and a facial massage add on. I was expecting the best thing since I saw how amazing it is from TikTok. I feel like I paid $110 for my head to be washed. I was expecting more a massage within the treatment as well as a facial massage and I didn't even get that. I left with a sore neck due to the turn my head for long periods of time and a major headache from my hair getting pulled when she was combing. I just wanted to leave and didn't want to say anything at that moment. I don't feel that it was worth the amount of money I spent and will not being coming back. I had been wanting to try a scalp spa for a while. For some reason I had idealized what the experience would be thinking it would resemble those deep treatments I've seen in some Asian countries, particularly South Korea. The experience was good. I booked about a month in advance because they are very busy and booked out! You can join a waitlist though if you're looking to get in sooner. When I walked in I was so pleasantly surprised to see that Kayla, who had done my blowout a couple times at my blowout place, there to do my service today- I knew I was in good hands! There are 4 stations next to each other and you place your items in a basket (+shoes) and then lay on the table/bed. They have a bolster for your legs and a blanket. Kayla asked about my scalp then grabbed some oil and started. The first 30-ish minutes was a scalp massage, brushing, combing... all so relaxing. Next came the hair steam- I LOVED this. Felt so relaxing- the steam was about 10 minutes and a cover was placed over my eyes. I added on the face massage- I wouldn't do this again because by the time she was doing my face, my back really started to hurt from the table. Last was the hair wash- it was so fun to be under the cool water-rainbow like device. I didn't quite realize this till I got there- you do leave with wet hair but they have a dryer you can borrow or you can add on a blowout. I think my scalp is probably really clean, feels a little itchy. I didn't love the smell of the shampoo/conditioner (nor am I sure what they were). I'd give Kayla 5 stars- she made the experience wonderful! read more

Went today after getting a gift certificate for Christmas. I'd been wanting to try a head spa for a while now and was excited for the experience. That being said, I have nothing to compare it to other than a standard massage that would incorporate a scalp massage...which this most definitely is not. First, it's in a very sketchy area which doesn't immediately bring relaxation when you have to dodge the homeless people in the parking lot and see a strip mall with only temporary signs because of the transient nature of the businesses that reside there. The lobby is barron. Like a desk, two chairs and a small table. No decor to speak of. Not welcoming. Once you are back in the spa area, the beds are only about 4 feet apart from each other so there's no privacy making it difficult to relax when you can hear and see everything going on around you. The spa beds talk too so not only do you have other people in the room, but the beds are saying "spa over" everytime they shut off the water which is weird. But the biggest disappointment is that out of the 50 minutes, I maybe got 10 minutes of actual hands on massage. The rest of it was brushing, so much brushing. Then combing. Then using some other dollar store tools to aimlessly use on my head in no particular pattern until it was time to wash my hair. The water would start out luke warm, go cold, get super hot, then cold again. I couldn't relax because I was either on the verge of being scalded or had the goosebumps from being too cold. She washed my hair similar to how a stylist would...with speed, vigor and scrubbed hard both with her hands then with a brush again. No conditioner was used. The sink draining was the last thing I experienced on the table as she wrapped a towel around my sopping wet hair and handed me a brush to head to the bathroom with to finish whatever styling I could do without a dryer. Wouldn't go back. I could pay my teenage daughter half the amount to do the same treatment at home and be more relaxed. Save your money. read more

I made the drive from the east valley after seeing videos of these types of spas. They were super boked out for a weekend - I think it was about 5 weeks for the first available appointment. It was a lovely treat, I do think there is room for improvement - for me there was some confusion around the staffing so they were a few minutes late taking me back. The waiting area looks like it is under construction still. Once in the back it is basically a dim open room with 4 tables a few feet apart. It was more private than your average waiting area but for a treatment session it was distracting that people were coming and going - there is room to put up some curtains between the beds for some more privacy. I didn't have a lot of expectations for the overall treatment - I did add on the 15 minute scalp treatment along with a 50 minute treatment. The time went pretty quickly. The tables are not the most comfortable. They do give you a small pillow for your knees and a small blanket to cover up with. The tables themselves are made of pleather maybe and the most annoying thing is that my body stuck to it in places just laying there. I took my main t-shirt off and had a tank top on - I was worried about getting wet and she said not to worry but a little water did splash on my shoulders - nothing major but I am glad that I wasn't wearing the shirt I was going out in public in. When I asked about it at the start they did say that that they had something I could put on if I was worried about it. My hair is still very soft after a few days. Do you leave with wet hair? Pretty much but I don't care about that they do have a small common area where you can borrow a dryer and some hair products. Will I be back? Probably, but it is not something I think I need regularly like nails or a massage. Maybe 1-2 times a year would be a good treat. read more

First time I've ever been to a head spa, so I have nothing to compare this service to. Located in a strip mall, the room is shared with like 4 or 5 tables and no curtains or dividers between them. I am very petite, so it would have been nice to have a stool to get up onto the tall table. Throughout my service, I could hear where other people were at with their services and when they were walking through the hall. It 100% detracted from my relaxation the entire time. My table also had no door or curtain at the front, so I had the light from the hallway in my face for an hour. The temperature of the water was warm at times, cold at others. The esthetician (?) offered me a blanket, but the room still felt cold, especially with cool water spray hitting my shoulders. At the start of the service, I was offered my choice of essential oil. The jasmine smelled very perfume-y. My scalp was brushed and scraped, which felt nice. Little tools were used on my face and scalp to massage which also felt nice, but the wire took got caught in my hair three times and yanked. I added a face massage on to my scalp service, which was a mistake. Cold wet lotion was smeared on my face with tools and hands for 15 minutes. I enjoyed the warm towel she used, but would definitely not recommend this add on service. All in all, I am glad I tried this and there were parts I liked, but I would not return or spend this $ again. read more

I have been seeing videos on social media about this Korean technique of pampering the scalp and hair and thought there must be a place offering this in Phoenix. Enter Zen Head Spa. I was so excited to book and luckily, they had a window the following day for me to take advantage of their 35-minute service (they also offer 50 minutes as well as add-on services like facials and scalp treatments which extend the length of your service, and which can also cause you to have to book out further). I figured I would start with a shorter service so I could decide for myself if it was worth the money. Spoiler: IT IS WORTH THE MONEY. I was met by my hostess for my experience and taken into a room with ambient lighting and music. This is perhaps the only opportunity for the business, although it didn't bother me: there are several beds and wash stations in a common space. They are spaced well and since the lights are dim, it's not hard to disconnect. In fact, as soon as my new friend's fingers started working their magic, I was immediately transported. I can't rave enough about how amazing the service was. The combination of light and firm touch was awesome. She massaged, brushed, used what felt like a gua sha, and then used a fine-tooth comb or brush to completely exfoliate my head. I am prone to dry scalp and some dandruff, so I knew it was not only feeling amazing, but also stimulating some healing blood flow to my scalp to help these issues. After lots of relaxing touch and massage, I received the best shampoo and condition of my life. I didn't opt for any add-on services, but they had a room with a hair dryer and a selection of hair products so I could leave somewhat put together. My 35-minute trip to heaven was only $45. I was so pleased, I will definitely opt for the longer service next time and an extra service or two if my pocketbook will allow. Do not sleep on this place! It's amazing. read more
