Why wasn't this place packed? We went in on a Friday evening, and admittedly, we were early (we eat early). We arrived at about 5:45 PM, and left about 7:00 PM, but there were not ever very many tables filled. I had a dish called Greek Shrimp, which was sautéed shrimp with feta, spinach, tomatoes, onion and olives. It was clearly a pan sauce finished to order, and it was served over their home-made linguine. Very tasty, not overwhelmed by the toppings, and the sauce was light and yummy. The pasta was a perfect al dente. The second order at our table was Pasta Piselli, prosciutto and baby peas tossed in an Alfredo cream sauce with home-made shell pasta. Another dish that was clearly a pan sauce made to order. The shells were lightly coated in the Alfredo, and the Alfredo was fresh and very tasty. (So many places smother their pasta in Alfredo that was made earlier.) A pan-finished Alfredo is a completely different and refreshing dish. The final plate at our table was Eggplant Parmigiana. This dish is often a soggy mess, but this plate was also made to order, with lightly breaded eggplant (not oily), topped with mozzarella, mushrooms, and marinara. The marinara had to have been made in-house - It was fresh and tomatoe-y, and made me wish that I'd had pasta marinara, instead of the shrimp. I know I sound like a shill. I hadn't been to Zeppoli's in years. I heard that they recently changed ownership, and that made me think that I should go over there. The fresh pasta alone is worth the trip. Perfectly cooked al dente pasta, served in a variety of fresh made pan sauces. The food and the service were great (the waitress actually predicted what I was going to order, which was kind of cool), and while the ambience is a little dated, I can't get past the food. Every dish at our table was fresh and very tasty, and the prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food. This is the best Italian food in Blacksburg. Why wasn't this place packed? Do I have an ulterior motive? Yes. I want lots of people to go to Zeppoli's so that they stay in business and I can keep going there. read more

I haven't been here in years but my wife and I had a hankering for something different from Sals. Place was quite empty, only 3 other tables occupied. Wine list was small but prices were surprisingly good ... A decent Chianti for under 15 bucks? Sure, hit me. I had the swordfish special, wife had chicken Alfredo. Well, my belief that you can't get good fish in Blacksburg was underlined here, although the accompanying vegetables/sauce was good. Wife's Alfredo was good, but uninspired. Fruit flies were out of control and I fished 4 out of my wife's wine before she started leaving a napkin on top. Decor was tired and dark. Plastic table coverings that belong on a cheap Mexican place. Bread was just OK, but olive oil in dip was oxidized. I know oxidation and I know olive oil. Tasted like a mix with other vegetable oil or a poor quality oil. Service was good. They need to hire a new manager and completely redo this place from top to bottom, decor to menu. read more

I have lived in Blacksburg for a long time and Zeppoli's used to be the place to go when deciding to go out for dinner and sometimes for lunch. We started trying new places and just have not gone back until recently. My husband and I have gone twice in the past two months and had excellent meals both times; it's even better than I remember it. I had a seafood special on Valentine's day and shrimp and cappelini this past weekend and even though I don't usually finish my meal when I eat out, it was so good I cleaned my plate! Okay, so my husband helped with the copious amount of pasta. He had veal both times and especially enjoyed the veal parm. The prices are very reasonable and the service is friendly and helpful; both times the waiter helped us decide on a wine and both times it was perfect. read more

I called for pick-up and asked the person on the phone if they have Chicken Marsala. He told me they did. What he forgot to tell me was that it's served covered in Alfredo sauce. I HATE Alfredo. I undestand that this is the way they serve it but if I'm asking if they have an item shouldn't they have enough common sense to let me know it's not served just marsala stye. read more

The kids had the fettuccine alfredo with chicken. The dish, especially the chicken, had a great flavor to it, and it was enough to feed two kids and an adult. I ordered a prosciutto strawberry flatbread. The flatbread was inedible. Prosciutto is salty, so I expected that, but the pesto was so salty, I couldn't take more than one bite. The flatbread was an awkward chewy texture. I am Italian and I found the dish insulting to my heritage. So, one great dish and one really awful one. read more

One of the best restaurants I have been to since moving to Blacksburg. The staff is amazing, I felt welcomed upon my arrival and the wait time to get my food was not lengthy. I highly recommend this establishment for anyone looking for well priced pasta as well as a friendly environment. read more

The food wasn't bad until my eggplant parm wasn't completely cooked. The service was awful. We were served flat soda and partially uncooked food with no apology or discount to our order. I made a reservation and arrived on time, I was greeted with an 8 minute wait to get a drink while the table next to us was waited on twice by the person that turned out to be our waiter. I payed 17 dollars for undercooked noodles 3 pieces of over cooked veal and a server that decided they cared more about the table next to ours than mine. It gets 2 stars because at least my date enjoyed her ravioli alfredo. read more

Recently just visited from out of town and had one of the best experiences I have ever had. I visited Blacksburg a few years ago and I liked to see what the new management had done to the place. They have created a patio, incorporated the wine room with a more intimate dining room for private parties and they have definitely been doing some new interior decorating. The food is great and well worth the price, I would definitely recommend stopping by when you are in town. read more

I would give the food at this place 5 stars. I love the manicotti and the spinach ravioli, and my husband always gets some kind of veal. While the food is excellent, the service is a little hit or miss. The inside could also use a little updating. It feels like it's stuck in the 1990s with faded green walls and oilcloth tablecloths. read more

Just grabbed brunch here. first, the wine prices were great.... A Nebbiolo for 13.99? Sure! We came because we saw they had new ownership. We had the taste of Italy and the fried mortadella sandwich. They make their own pasta apparently, and you can taste the quality. We are coming to a wine tasting on the 10th , should be fun. Zeppoli's is by far the most consistently high-quality restaurant in Blacksburg. I've been going there at least twice a month for about 15 years. Yes, they can have an off night, but that is rare. The service and the menu regulars and the salads are generally very good, the specials are usually good and sometimes extraordinary (risk has its rewards), and the soups are almost always great. We particularly like the lasagna, scallops formaggio, salmon florentine, greek shrimp, seafood fettuccine, and eggplant parmigiana. The bread, pasta and sausage are all fresh-made at the restaurant, and the sausage is particularly good. Sometimes I just get a large appetizer and a side of sausage. Wine in most restaurants gets marked up at least 2 x retail + $1; Zeppoli's serves wine from their shop at the table for just the retail price + a $2 corking fee. The wine shop alone is worth checking them out- large selection and competitive prices, and the biweekly wine tastings are a hoot. Very informal, but very informative, and lots of food and generally 8+ tastings for a great price. read more

We have ate at Zeppoli's occasionally over the years. I was drawn by the fact that they make their own pasta. But so far that hasn't been a compelling reason for me to return. Years ago I ordered a pasta dish with a butter garlic sauce. I didn't realize then that that meant the pasta would be drowning in a soup of butter/oil. Perhaps I just didn't understand the description. Recently I tried Zeppoli's again with a large group, and the food was amazing (though I got a marinara based dish with perfectly cooked shrimp). The chef stopped by to chat afterwards and he asked about our food. I thought Wow, the restaurant has changed. So tonight my husband and I decided to go to Zeppoli's again. We ordered calamari for an appetizer, I ordered the Greek shrimp pasta meal in garlic butter sauce, and my husband ordered the special of veal oscar. The calamari was overcooked (breading was very dark brown), my large Gulf shrimp were unforgivably overcooked and swam in a bowl of butter/oil, and my husband's veal was heavily breaded and slightly overcooked and dark brown. On top of that our server was not attentive at all (let my water get down to ice cubes twice, rarely checked on us, and had a rather "icy" personality the whole time). We thought she would never come back and take our credit card. I try to give local restaurants several chances before I give a bad review. But I'm sorry, given our recent experience with Zeppoli's we will be choosing Olive Garden or Sal's until things change. I've yet to find a restaurant anywhere whose calamari can beat Olive Garden's! read more
