Let's start with the previous reviews... they are pretty much on point. Graduation week at VA Tech gives these businesses the upper hand. It doesn't matter that customers have made reservations months in advance. It doesn't matter that when the owner calls to confirm your reservations and you request indoor seating. What matters is they want you to eat there despite what you've requested. Our group sat outside on the semi covered outdoor porch. Nearby other customers were VERY unhappy that they had been given outdoor seating despite previous requests to sit indoors. Most of these customers left. We stayed because we wanted a decent meal and we wanted to celebrate. Service was spotty. It took nearly 10 minutes for a server to come outside and offer to take our drink orders or even pour us water. Yes, we were parched while sitting outdoors in 55 degree windy weather. The owner of the restaurant walked past us several times to count the vacant outdoor seats. She never acknowledged us and only looked at us after we called out to her. She was RUDE to say the least. Our server was friendly and apologetic, not sure why he didn't come out to acknowledge our group of 7 diners. The food: yes, other yelpers had concluded that the bread seemed very similar to Mrs. Schubert roll. If you know them you know. The other shocking revelation was when they called to confirm our reservation, they informed us that they were only serving the prix fixed meal of $69. Most of us ordered the "hand cut 8 oz filet", served with over cooked green beans. The salads(most of us got Caesar), was not a hand tossed dressing, not quite sure what the dressing was made of and the cheese seemed like a bagged shredded parm. We were so cold that we ordered our desserts(included) to go. Eating in the warmth of our cozy hotel dining lobby was our goal. The desserts were not anything special. The key lime pie was a disaster(crumbled and squishy), the rest of them not worth noting. Finally worth noting is their "wine", a semi inexpensive bottle of wine was out of stock so instead of coming to let us know, they brought out a cheaper local Virginia wine. Disappointing. The ambience and decor of Summit restaurant was stunning. The crab cakes delicious. The waiter, who was the waiter and the maitre d, and the expediter - did the best he could under the circumstances As he was the only waiter in the restaurant. He was very polite, soft spoken, and professional. It was apparent that they were very understaffed - both kitchen staff and waiting staff. That's a shame - this could be a very good restaurant for our area. 20 minutes after ordering the waiter came out and said, "sorry we do not have the leg of lamb that you ordered" - bad management as they should have informed customers at the time of ordering what they do not have on the menu. Either the chef or management should be responsible for this incompetence- Not the waiters fault. We also had to wait a really long time for our food and refills, as I say, this is a sign of being understaffed. So then i ordered the rib eye. The rib eye was so soaked in marinate that it totally marred the taste. A waste of money and calories. I would suggest asking the customer if they want a steak marinated or not. The plated presentation was impressive though and the pre meal soup was excellent. The pre meal salad was very underwhelming as was the desert. This was the first time we ate at this restaurant and I am afraid it will be our last. read more

The Ceasar, and Italian Angel entrees were divine and was a great presentation. Same for the garden salad and Filet Mignon. The rolls were disappointing though, being straight out of a Sister Schubert's bag. The restored 1800's high end residence is a great setting for special events. However, I do recommend fixing the ceiling in the men's room. Mathew was patient with our family and displayed descent knowledge of the menu. The Summit, a family owned business, has a varied menu with the best appetizers, entrées, salads, and desserts of any restaurant in this area, as well as a good wine selection. Every dish I've had there has been exceptionally delicious with a beautiful presentation. All servers have been trained well and are very nice. We have eaten here many times. Italian Angel is my favorite. The seafood is spectacular with the spicy cream sauce. My mouth waters just thinking about it. Everything is so good. I had great hopes for this restaurant. They were dashed. We arrived thirty minutes after it was supposed to be open. It wasn't. As I stood there, I noticed the faded plastic flowers gracing the front entrance. They might have been lovely several years ago. We knocked on the locked front door several more times, rang the doorbell, hollered again. No luck. Then a woman and a small child ran up on the porch. The woman exclaimed about the door being locked and then she disappeared around the back. A few minutes later lights came on inside and another woman opened the door. We waited while several people set things out, up, and over. The inauspicious beginning should have been a warning. It was, but we didn't heed it. The food was mediocre. Everyone had the same sides: overcooked broccoli, green beans, mashed potatoes. Sort of like the school cafeteria on a good day. I had a vegetarian dinner with mushrooms piled on pasta with (sun-dried?) tomatoes. The polenta that was supposed to be under the pile might have been tasty. No one had dessert. The Victorian house was very nice once upon a time. Now it is seedy and desperately in need of a total makeover. Outdoor lighting was terribly inadequate. Little white lights are for accents, not for serious lighting. The steps to the parking area were dark and crooked through overgrown shrubbery. Not a good combo. The servers were friendly and the children behaved. We will not be back. read more

Delicious, romantic, and overall a stellar experience! We came here at 8:30pm on a Monday and were sat immediately at a lovely outdoor gazebo. We were one of maybe 3 guests total at the restaurant, so it was very private. We ordered the Chicken Arabesque and The Swan with their soup de jour, a delicious savory apple and rutabaga soup. The Chicken was juicy, tender, and a lovely combination of sweet and savory. The duck was cooked to perfection and was also incredibly tender. The mashed potato's were the best of the sides and the rice and the green beans were above average. The ambience was INSANE!! We sat in a gorgeous, twinkle lit gazebo while a storm rolled over the mountains. The lightning lit up the sky, but never dared to give way to rain. The service was impeccable, our server, Matt, treated us like royalty! Matt was very professional and classy and made our experience top tier. Overall, we had one of our favorite meals in Virginia at The Summit Restaurant and can't wait to come back when we're next traveling through! read more

Nice little restaurant based in an old Victorian-style house. It was nice having the fireplaces going when it was so cold out. The interior is definitely Victorian but needs refreshed. The security camera would blend in nicely if the rats nest of cords were not just dangling there. Throughout our dinner, the lights kept flickering and it the weather, while cold, did not warrant them to flicker. The waitress was good. She asked the chef to make an appetizer that we saw on their website, however, that was not on the menu. Apparently, the chef cannot remember his password and the website is outdated. They were out of a few things on the menu but it was okay. Then many I had, however, was dirty. The owner is definitely a penny pincher. We started out with the humus appetizer, the Brie appetizer, and the tuna appetizer (which is the one we requested). The tuna was amazing. The hummus was okay. The Brie was good but I wish it was hotter. We also received some rolls, however, they were lukewarm; Definitely not homemade. My entree came with a salad and I got the maple Dino on mustard dressing. The salad was a nice little portion and the dressing was good. For my entree, I had "The Swan" which is a duck breast cooked to medium rare and served with mashed potatoes and a vegetable which happened to be green beans. The duck was cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes were good. The beans were not fully prepped and still were connected with each other via the vine. When the waitress brought the desert menu, it all looked amazing. However, she said "it would be easier to tell you what we have than don't have". The lack of available options was disheartening and I skipped desert. I had to leave my group early and ended having to get my coat from their coat check by myself. As I was leaving, I noticed a tacky "Help Wanted" sign that you would not expect to see on an establishment that advertises fine dining. Overall, a lackluster experience. My review is the email that I sent to the restaurant the day after Thanksgiving it is listed below. To whom it may concern, I have to start this note with the fact that I have never emailed a restaurant before in my life due to a bad night. Last night me and my wife and my son had reservations for 630 at your restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner because we just moved to the area and we are away from our family This year. Let me start with how we were greeted when we entered your restaurant. The short answer is we weren't. We arrived at 6:25 for 630 reservation and stood there for a half hour before anyone said a word to us or checked in on us. We had five different people come up to the podium, at least five separate times each and not one person said a word until I grabbed somebody. Now I'm going to talk about the service which was the worst I've ever had ever. Once we we seated it it took about 45 minutes for someone to bring us drinks and take our order. Then about another 45 minutes later to an hour we before finally received our food. we saw our waitress once when she took our order and then didn't see her again for almost 2 hours. We had to ask other servers for water for drinks and for anything else I ended up even just having my dinner boxed up because it was already so late. The one thing I do want to thank you for and it was very special to my son is that all he had wanted and one of the reasons we chose your restaurant is because you served duck his duck was delicious and my wife's fillet was very well prepared. Unfortunately, I had the traditional turkey dinner and there was about two or three tiny slices of turkey breast and about 2 pounds of mashed potatoes stuffing and sweet potatoes , I was very disappointed for the price that I paid for that meal. I thought $50 for 2 to 3 ounces of meat was ridiculous. In addition, all of us wanted to have the soup and you ran out before we could even enjoy it. Probably because by the time you were ready to serve us, it had been over an hour and a half. I am very torn whether I actually want to try your restaurant again as we love to dine out and greatly appreciate a well prepared good quality Menu, which I am assuming you have normally. Honestly, my biggest gripe complaint was the lack of service. My wife was upset and crying by the end of the night because she picked your restaurant and the complete lack of social interaction from anyone in your staff, including a young lady in a white blouse that walked by us at least 10 times and never asked us for anything , as we sat there with empty glasses waiting for our meals. I do hope that you provide me a response but based on the lack of customer service I witnessed last evening I am not expecting one. NO RESPONSE AS EXPECTED!!!!!!!! read more

Unfortunately you do not "minus" in star rating! Parking is atrocious. Food was awful.(salmon was bad) veal was fatty and chewy, clam sauce was terrible!) the waitress just shrugged and walked away when told the food was not edible and rarely ever came back to the table. It took 30 minutes to get a beer an hour and 45 minutes to get food. The bread came when the other three people in my party were done eating. manager couldn't have cared less. The only two people that were worthwhile on the wsitStaff were Matthew (the waiter for the table in back of us and the bus boy or waiter in training. I left a cash tip for lousy service and gave the other waiter a cash tip too. When I got the receipt this morning for dinner last night they added on a $22.09 tip. We made a 6:00 PM reservation, which was their opening time. We couldn't find a parking spot for 15 minutes as the lot was full and unlit. I made a reservation as requested and asked for a romantic dinner setting for my wife's birthday. We were seated next to a large table of loud women in a corner. The room was uncomfortably hot. The seats at our table were antique and lacked cushioning, so we sank into them, causing us to sit lower than the normal level for our table. We ordered and were brought drinks, and that was the last pleasant thing that happened. We ordered dinner at about 6:30 PM. We were finally served at about 8:00 PM. I ordered a Ribeye steak dinner. It was served covered with steak sauce as thick as gravy. The waitress said that this is the way it was advertised on the menu. I ordered a $42 Ribeye steak, and I was served something that I could not eat after waiting patiently for over an hour. We sent the meal back and left. I will never go back. read more

First warning: Do not make a reservation here using open table. We came today for lunch (Easter) and they didn't have our reservation. They said there chef has on his phone but forgets to put the reservations on their paper book they actual use for reservations called in. They were extremely rude about us not having a reservation when they admitted it was their fault. The male waister was extremely disrespectful and told us we could come back I. 3 hours. I asked for manager and the hostess said she would get. No one ever came that said they were manager but anothe waitress said she would find us a table and asked them if we could eat outside. And we did. Food was good. 2 of us had crab cakes and they were good and different. Almost a bit of a cornbread taste with a lot of crab meat. I had filet and it would good. Has a unique charred flavor I liked. Not a steakhouse but reasonably good filet. My daughters chicken was very good. Overall I liked the food and chef appears talented. I would just not frequent this restaurant again because of the way we were treated. Not a single person actually said they aplologized for their errors - seemed they felt we were lucky they did anything for us at all. read more

We have been going here for special occasions for 19 years. It used to be fantastic, but it has changed in more recent years and not for the better. Things started going downhill when they began to use the frozen Sister Shubert rolls. Our dinner on Valentine's weekend was bad enough to have us rethink returning in the future. Not only were the rolls Sister Shubert, but the vegetables were so mushy and over cooked they were inedible. The entrees were mediocre. Definitely not the wonderful food that they used to serve years ago. I used to look forward to going here as a special treat, but it is no longer worth the money. read more

Dinner was extremely slow, waitress rarely came by (apparently she was working a large group next door in another room). We saw several diners come and go while we waited for our food. We had a very enjoyable "special occasion " meal at the Summit this week. Our server (Valerie) was very attentive and knowledgeable. I especially appreciated that my tea water was super hot! We started with a Caesar salad which was light and fresh. The cheese was quality. My husband had a shrimp and scallop dish that was excellent. I had the vegetarian pasta. The sauce was a bit rich for my taste but well prepared. We split a delicious and warm flourless chocolate torte for dessert. The decor is on the eclectic and shabby side. My husbands chair was in disrepair and the wallpaper in the bathroom is peeling. The thing I thought most odd though was that the dining rooms are small and it was difficult to have a private conversation with my spouse. Essentially the whole room -4 tables of couples- ended up talking with each other or not taking at all. The patio looks lovely for a summer evening and perhaps a different acoustic. read more

Had a great meal here Saturday evening. It was too cold outside but they have a great patio and porch with gorgeous outdoor seating and pretty lights strung across for ambiance. I would definitely go back in warmer weather to try it out. We dined in the green room which was a cozy room inside the house with a lot of character. We thoroughly enjoyed appetizers, salad, entrees, and a bottle of wine. The icing on the cake was the great service we received. Our server was friendly and attentive and really made the meal one to remember. Not a "Victorian" facility, more like a "bungalow" or boarding house. Wall paper peeling, bad 1980s decor, garbage all over the property, chairs falling apart, etc.. We went here for our anniversary and at first they were playing classic music which was nice than our waiter couldn't speak English very well and he was in a hurry and brought my husbands appetizer out first. He kept pressuring us to order. After ordering the appetizers I ordered stuffed mushrooms with crab meat it was not good tasted fishy instead of clean and fresh the way crab is supposed to taste. The waiter kept forgetting my husband soup and my salad. Over priced on cheap champagne. Than they started playing salsa music it didn't fit with the decor. Everyone in our party enjoyed their particular entree and we enjoyed sitting under the cupola outside as the weather was very pleasant. The waitress was nice as well. However, the issues that we had could be avoided. 1. Don't sit outside. The waitstaff will forget about you. 2. Don't sit outside. The food will arrive cool to cold. 3. Don't sit outside. The time between appetizers, entrees and desserts is enough to put you in a coma. We fortunately had great conversations to keep us awake. 4. Don't sit outside. I agree with everyone on this review. It's two blocks from our house and even though it's pricey, it's one of our favorite places to go. Christiansburg doesn't have many up-scale restaurants, but even if there were- we'd still be regulars at the Summit. The servers are polite (they actually let you eat, but make sure you have what you need) the ambiance is amazing- Victorian setting (and most nights of the week- you can actually get your own room with fireplace- *not on weekends*). The food was excellent. We always get the grilled eggplant appetizer, because we are in love with their in-house vinaigrette that is amazing on the salad as well. The New York strip is GREAT! PLEASE give this place a try. You'll love it. 5 stars for me are few and far between- especially around here. read more

There was trash outside around the patio; then, an employee had fast food bags on the hostess table; just not a good look. The food was pretty good, expensive, but I guess it's what you get for "fine dining" in this area? The restaurant itself is cozy, but does need some updates (it's very dated, and multiple of our tables chairs were basically broken). There is very limited parking. The service was SO slow. We sat at 7 and didn't get our starting salads and bread until 8:30. It was 9:00 when we finally got our entrees. Multiple glasses of wine were forgotten. The waitress would come by other tables and breeze past ours, and we had hoped to order appetizers and more drinks but gave up. I understand there is a shortage of servers in the area, but don't sit a full restaurant if you can not serve all the patrons in a timely manor. Our table also agreed that the green beans that came with the steak were canned beans, way too soft and basically flavorless. A shame since green beans are pretty easy to sautee. For a nearly $40 steak I expect better. Crab cakes were good. I updated my review to one star after seeing photos of the kitchen posted online. Truly disgusting. read more
