    Chicken curry

Asian food, outdoor dining and sunshine. What more could a group of people want? Between us we had veggie dumplings, veggie curry, chicken curry, tuna and salmon sashimi and kimchi fries. The sashimi was fantastic, fresh and juicy. It came with pickled ginger and wasabi (I asked for more because heat please!). The fries covered in a cream cheese sauce and kimchi. It was balanced to a tee, spicy and creamy with a beautiful crunch. The dumplings were the standout dish for me. The flavour of the casing was surprising and was complimented by the filling and the dipping sauce. Service was extremely laid back, you order at the counter, but that didn't take away from the food.

When we read about Zero Fox opening up right next door to our apartment block our lazy-bones were tingling. Japanese inspired sushi and bowls with craft beers served from a beautiful Woolstore shop front less than 5 minutes from our home was almost too good to be true. We made our way over to the new bar-come-eatery on a Friday afternoon just before midday. We were probably a little too keen in hindsight, as they were still setting things up for the day when we arrived. Thankfully they were still able to serve us some drinks and let us peruse the extensive menu as they worked. The space is simple with long timber tables and matching stools spread around the concrete walkway. I've heard they actually made these from scratch, which is an impressive feat. We didn't step into the interior although it looked well fitted out with similar tables and a large projection screen which at the time we were there, was beaming out Ferris Beuller's Day Off. Food is ordered via a hole-in-the-(bricked)-wall which forms part of the interior bar space. Staff are all very happy to help first time diners and have lots of gluten free menu options. After quizzing the staff on my particular food allergy challenges (try ordering something with no avocado and no gluten at any other Japanese place!) I was excited to try the vegetarian curry. Reactions to my food allergies can be a mixed bag for me. Some menus are so straight forward I don't really need to mention anything, other times I have to spend some time working through the options with staff. The way service react to this has a big impact on my experience and I'm pleased to say Zero Fox really took it in their stride. Nobody was angry or put-out and everyone just wanted to help me find something I could (safely) enjoy. It was a great experience. Drinks wise as I was working that day I opted for a Sprite while my lunch dates went with a couple of craft beers. There is a impressive list to work through and a nice amount of variety. Our food arrived quickly and looked sensational! We had kimchi fries and a serve of the chicken katsu, cream cheese & avo sushi alongside my curry. The fries themselves were a generous serving topped with an array of goodies including kimchi of course. Unfortunately these weren't gluten free so I couldn't sample them, and the same went for the sushi. My curry was a huge bowl of piping hot rice, vegetables and a huge field mushroom with a few enoki mushrooms on top. The Japanese curry sauce was on par with normal flavours I would expect and was not too overpowering. The whole dish was absolutely divine and so filling! I definitely did not miss the meat at all. My fellow diners thought their meals were excellent, and the sushi in particular was very good value at just $9.50 for 10 pieces (one of the daily special items). All in all we had a great experience here and will definitely return to explore more of the menu.

We went to Zero Fox last Sunday to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Since we lived several years in Japan we were very much looking forward trying Zero Fox and taste their food. My hubby is a big fan of craft beer, living in Teneriffe we're blessed to have plenty great brews but they still managed to surprise him with one he didn't taste, yet. A very good start! I was happily surprised by their portion size, you defo have enough to eat! We had the kimchi fries, they are extemely additive! The kimchi is sweet and not too sour, the chips were crispy and served with a bit of cottage cheese which defo worked well with the dish. Next we had takoyaki ( octopus balls), it's a Kansai speciality which we adore however it's one dish that can really be so-so when not performed correctly. Zero Fox takoyakis were FANTASTIC!!! I could have munched on the whole plate but had to share them with my beloved... The things you do for love! I know octopus balls sound weird but trust me, they are delish! Dare giving them a go! I also had a bowl of prawn tempura udon. Again, happily surprised by the generosity of the portion! Udon broth is hard to execute, and it's the best udon I had outside Japan. The tempera was tasty & crispy, you have two prawns & two veggies tempura and extra garnish (fried tofu). A very satisfying bowl on a chilly day. My hubby had chicken katsu, it was nice but he wasn't a big fan of the capsicums in it. The katsu sauce though was great! Overall, we paid $61 for two people: 4 big plates, 1 pint & 2 sparkling water. If you go to Zero Fox thinking it's a pub-like place you might find it a bit pricy. The food is defo restaurant quality and the price reflects the care, passion the chef has for the food, as well as portion size. As far as Japanese restaurants go, it's not the most authentic one but they do serve amazing fusion food! And coming from me, it's big, I don't usually love fusion food. We'll be back!! Don't hesitate pay them a visit!

Many of you may remember its previous incarnation of the dodgy Mustang bar, but gone are the sticky floors, childlike clientele and (unfortunately) the pool tables of old. It has been replaced with a relaxed but moody downstairs, industrial lighting teamed with leather couches add to the atmosphere in the dining hall. Here you can get some typical North American pub grub teamed with a lottery of 23 rotating ales on the back wall. I had the pig & fig pizza which was tasty and a decent size, you could as share it... My dining partners had the piggy back ribs & the pulled pork roll which they though the meat was perhaps a little mushy, whilst also still tasty. Downstairs from time to time you'll also have live music on stage as well as access to a shuffle board game plus a giant mammoth to go with its name sake... Once you wander upstairs, that's where the stark contrast happens, it's like a vibrant tropical courtyard garden popping with colour and an airy feel, the lounging areas are great as is the view onto the busy-ness of Anne street. You can also keep yourself occupied whilst drinking up here with bocci on the "lawn" and giant Jenga. All in all, I think it's got a great vibe & I'll be back!

We also tried one of the pizza's as was a bit disappointed as the dough in the centre was raw. Craft beers were delicious but the descriptions did not always match up with what we were tasting. The place was really clean, but the bathrooms need some ventilation. Feel bad for the mammoth in the room, it definitely has seen better days.

I got to Taps at about 7.30 on a Wednesday and it was nice and busy. The bar had a good buzz to it. There were groups of people at most tables. They were drinking, eating chicken wings and playing games. I love a venue that has games available. I don't know why, but it makes me all excited - it's probably the natural winner in me. We added cash to our token, which got us three drinks each. I was super happy because they have Stowford Press which is one of my favourite ciders, and the ability to go and get a drink when I wanted one was awesome. After a couple of pints, we entered into a game of genga, which turned out to be a pretty epic game actually (24 completely levels - I know, amazing). I know it's gimmicky, but I liked pouring my own pints and exploring the different beers available. As it was super reasonably priced, I can see myself heading back and doing a mini tasting. It's a cool concept and I like that if you tried one beer, and didn't like it, you can just move on to the next one.

In my pocket, come on!", well, that's how I feel about Bloodhound. I've been there a few times now, and I am always greeted with smiles and genuine pleasantries from the team. My first time I sat at the bar, worked on my phone and casually chatted to Alice the bartender. I sipped my first sip of the incredible Willie Smiths cider (TAS) and was wowed by their stupidly extensive beer menu. Next time I popped in with my mum and housemate. We grabbed our drinks at sat the window, chatting away and had a grand 'ole time. Mother dearest enjoyed a few glasses of tempranillo and L and I tucked into pints of cider. After watching and hearing the team deal with an incredibly rude and offensive customer, I was really impressed with them. They were calm, honest and didn't let it get to them. My next visit was with a friend of mine. We sat at the bar, enjoyed some very good banter about espresso martini's and sunk some pints. They were doing 25% everything in a bottle, so I jumped on it and tried another Willie Smiths. YUM. I've since been back twice with two different friends and I just love it. They spice their own rum, they do buy one get one free tacos on a Tuesday and they have a whole upstairs that I'm yet to even explore. The crowd are cool, the booze is great but hats off to the team, because they really make this venue!
