In today's day and age we usually have several, depressing options: big box, megastore, super club book emporiums where the atmosphere is glowing with fluorescent bulbs and dim minded staff...or...click, click on the mouse, shipped to my door in a beige box, I hope I like it online book buying experiences. If you ask me none of those options are all that appealing. With that being said there is hope in Rhinebeck, NY and that hope comes in an Oblong form! (Ok I'm not a comedian) Oblong is the answer to the all too often disconnected book store experiences of the present. This store serves as a sanctuary to those longing for the bookstore of the past ambiance. Tall stacks of books on display with index cards handwritten by the staff strategically placed to provide insight. A friendly staff who goes out of their way to assist you and even remembers you; that's how customer service should be! I recently purchased a book and came back two weeks later for a signing. Upon walking up to get in line a member of the staff recognized me and pinpointed that I was there two weeks prior to purchase to book. Talk about small town charm! Speaking of signings, they often host them as well as meet the author events with Q&A. If you need a book, a place to escape or a time machine to those better days gone past just take a trip to Rhinebeck and visit Oblong. You're welcome.

The owner is English and her business is an extension of her lovely personality. I have childhood memories of this place that could have come straight out of a magical fairytale book. There are many categories here; a large history section, gardening, art, film, geography, mythology, crafts, so many categories and subcategories, and because they are curated by someone passionate with books there are no filler books here. The prices are unbelievably reasonable, this is a curated collection by a woman passionate about books, making a living off of it feels secondary here to the passion of finding the books. They have a great variety of books available for sale and they don't seem to mind if you reading one while enjoying your coffee or cold brew. In the back they have a large space with art supplies; just about anything one would need to get started and beyond. My mom purchased a few paint brushes and I purchased a round of beers for our group. Pricing is quite affordable - craft beer was $6.48 each and my mom's Saranac soda was $2.78. The store is immaculately kept and the restroom was clean. We had a great time while visiting the area and would come back again next time we're in town.

It's located on such a charming street, and stepping inside felt like walking into an elevated Barnes & Noble straight out of a Harry Potter movie. There are endless shelves of books across every genre, cozy seating throughout, and the perfect atmosphere to spend hours browsing or reading. The coffee was just as wonderful as the space. I wasn't sure what to order, so the barista recommended a drink and was incredibly accommodating with my many requests. I can't have too much milk or syrup, so I basically gave them a complicated custom order, and they made it exactly to my liking without hesitation. I also ended up buying one of the chocolate bars they had at the counter and turns out it was $20!!!! As a tourist, I had no idea it was a well known local chocolate brand with a factory nearby, so that was a fun surprise. This is the kind of place that makes you want to slow down. I'd love to come back, grab a coffee, spend the entire afternoon reading, and just soak in the comforting smell of books and fresh coffee. Such a cozy, magical spot that's well worth visiting!

One thing to mention is that the café at this B&N serves Starbucks drinks and bites, but it's not an independent, standalone Starbucks spot. I've been coming here for books, yearly wall calendars, writing pads and similar items for since I've been in the Catskills. The service has always been friendly and helpful. While they discontinued the Teacher Rewards membership, there are still other membership perks I can enjoy too. It's a great bookstore with a welcoming atmosphere, well-organized and it's nice having it nearby.
