    Scallion Pancake
    Jeff K.

One of the best vegan spots in MA and even Thai, can't wait to have again. Had: Scallion pancake (one of my favorites I've had) Malaysian curry stew (very good) Pad-Thai (clean, no sodium overload, big portion) Soy Ice Cream Vanilla (great)

Delicious vegan chinese food! I had the tofu delight and scallion pancakes from here at a catered event. The tofu delight was so good that I was actually worried they used beef broth in the sauce before learning the restaurant was all vegan. Scallion pancakes were wonderfully crispy as well. Highly recommend!

So I stopped in on a Wednesday, about 1:30/2pm or so and the restaurant was empty. (Another party came in a little after I did, but I nearly had the whole restaurant to myself. The weekday lunch special is a pretty decent value for $12, a main, miso soup, a spring roll, and all but the two noodle options also come with brown rice. The Thai Tea was tasty (and I didn't even think I liked Thai Tea much) but a smidge expensive. I will acknowledge that that could be because of the fact that we're still in a plague and the cost of ingredients could have gone up. Maybe that's not the normal, I don't actually know. I eat pretty much everything, so in no way am I a connoisseur of vegan food, but I left the restaurant pleased with my choices and a full belly. What more can you ask for?

The food here is very very good. We ordered a ton of appetizers and entrees and really enjoyed all of it! So nice to have a good variety of vegan options like this.

tl;dr - Five stars on savory stuff alone; minus one on dessert After a full day of travel back home to Greater Boston (Medford, this time around) on no less than two busses, one Lyft, a plane, another bus, the Red Line, and one MORE bus, a delivery involving my favorite things (in general, SAVORY PANCAKE AND DUMPLING THINS OF ANY KIND WHATSOEVER, plus cake) was precisely what I needed when I finally crashed at the Airbnb. I'd have gone my old Meju/Jae's route for a kimchi scallion pancake if they had not closed (nooooooo!), so I looked around for something similar and found Zhu. I must say, what a lovely scallion pancake this was! Quite a crisp-chew combination, and just the right flavor and salt balance. I think I liked Meju's less-stretchy texture a little better, but this one was excellent in its own right. The steamed veggie dumplings were simple, tender, and very good as well. I loved their sweet, bright sauce, though I might add some soy or other umami touch to really make it stand out. Finally, the requirement: some cake! The chocolate cake was....eh, just fine, I suppose. To Zhu's credit, vegan baking is hard, and except for the almost stiff-jelly twinge of texture from whatever the subbed for egg behavior, it was almost there. I think instead of mousse (which was likewise okay but would be AMAZING with more salt and fat) inside and out, they should do a richer frosting for the top! Otherwise, though, I happily ate the whole thing (I was really happy with its generous size, too) and would probably have eaten another if it was in front of me.

    BBQ Seitan and Cold Noodles
    Katie G.

Wanted to try something completely new, so, being a complete omnivore, what better choice than a vegan restaurant. I tried the BBQ seitan (as I'd never tried that meat substitute before) and while the sauce was a bit too sweet for me, the protein itself was pretty good. Definitely couldn't replace beef for me, but I enjoyed it. The highlight for me, though, were the cold noodles. I've had cold noodle dishes before, but none in the way this was prepared. The green tea noodles themselves were beautifully understated, and the sesame and peanut sauce was plain addicting. I also really appreciated the addition of lettuce (on the bottom of the plate) for some needed crunch. It may be one of my favorite noodle dishes right now, and I can't wait to go back to get it again. Additionally, the service was great. This restaurant is also a block away from a stop on the 77 bus, so there's really no excuse not to try this place out if you live in the area, even if you're not vegan.

Their menu is absolutely massive, which is usually a red flag that they make a lot of things to mediocrity instead of focusing on excellent dishes. But if you just want Americanized Asian food and aren't expecting fine dining, then you're in for a treat with the hundred or so options on this extensive menu. We tried some sushi rolls, and then I had a fusion Japanese-Thai dish. The rolls were pretty good, they tasted fresh. And the udon and green curry combo in my dish was fine, I wasn't disappointed. Cocktails were similarly okay, nothing worth writing home about. In terms of atmosphere, the half of the restaurant that has live jazz was very unique. Great performance and the acoustics worked well, it was easy to hear the musicians get after it on the makeshift stage at the very front of the space. The jazz was the main attraction, obviously, so don't come if you're looking for quiet conversation. Service was a bit hit or miss; at first they were slow to bring drinks out but it picked up once they got everyone seated for the 6:30pm jazz. Be warned that you'll be asked to leave around 8:15pm to allow them to seat the 8:30pm performance. All in all, a fun option for basic food and drink with some live entertainment; if you're jonesing for some jazz then I can see you rating this place a little higher.

For drinks, we ordered the spritz from the drink menu and also asked if they could make a lychee martini. We ordered the pork bao buns for the table which usually come in two, but our waitress kindly offered for three bao buns to come out since our group had three people. These bao buns were fantastic and I would definitely recommend, the pork was so tender and flavorful. I ordered the 2011 guchi ramen and unfortunately, I was disappointed. I've had many bowls of ramen in my lifetime and maybe my opinion is based on personal preference, but the ramen was not great. The broth was pretty bland and the pork was mostly fat and the meat itself was quite dry and tough. I'm not sure if this is what they were going for, but I wouldn't recommend the ramen and I wouldn't get it again. However, I wouldn't be opposed to coming back and trying something else as my friends enjoyed their meal!

This is a really nice restaurant area, very spacious and plenty of seating when I came on a weekday evening around 6:30pm with a party of four. I wasn't familiar with their portion sizes but they recommended 3 barbecue meat dishes + 1 additional dish for four people. Given how expensive some of the options are (galbi is around $37!), we opted for two meat options and a soft tofu chigae soup. I appreciated how the staff gave us feedback and recommendations on what to order though! Food: - Galbi: delicious. A smaller portion, definitely not too much meat especially if you have multiple people. I feel like you definitely pay for flavor and quality here instead of quantity but some of the pieces were sinewy and tough. - Spicy bulgogi: my favorite, and a better portion for price. I preferred this to the Galbi! Not too spicy - Soft tofu chigae soup: so spicy but a very cozy feeling. They give you an egg to crack into it. Honestly I liked the flavors so much but this is definitely more of a "treat" of a restaurant since it's hard to do alone (have to order at least two dishes to do the barbecue option) and it's expensive for what it is!

They don't even give left over food to no one. I don't know why owner has to lie to me. These offerings never accepted from side. Buffet foods are not fresh. They started cook earlier in the week and some are just suggy and cold old. Then food sit there all day all evening until 8:30pm and owner once gave me super old cold food instead of trash it. Owner said I could take home. Since I was low on cash and had to eat old fried foods made me sick for a few days. I know I should not get free food to write review here but I think I should have report here. I take this matter very serious and I want you to consider about further actions against this restaurant. Another note from monthly Buffet, 4/18/26 is not happening as they skipped to May. Previous buffet table had crushed peanuts without signed name of what it is. I am afraid of some gets allergic reactions to peanuts without knowing what they eat. And lastly buffet table has no one is serving from restaurant side, when I saw buffet buyers without line digging food, every customer is doing own thing and restaurant doesn't supervise health concerns are very against the law in Massachusetts, probably against all law in this planet. Too bad !!

I found the space itself clean, open, and comfortable, with enough room to settle in properly rather than feeling cramped. There are board games available if you are going with a group and want to make an afternoon of it. The vendor selection is one of the main draws and gives the marketplace its identity. Tasya's Kitchen has quickly become the standout among the current offerings, serving Indonesian food that has drawn in both the local community and people who have been looking for that kind of cuisine in the area for a long time. The dishes I tried were authentic and well seasoned, and for a region where Indonesian food is genuinely hard to find, its presence here alone makes Novo worth visiting. Tabla Cuisine rounded out the savory options well, and the overall spread across vendors covered enough ground that my group, with different preferences, all found something worth ordering. Other vendors such as Mollytea, Fluffy Fluffy, Cotti Coffee, and Zhengxin Chicken Steak all have branches in NYC, opening some of their first locations in the Boston area here, while others like Baby Cafe and Park's Kitchen have moved into the space from their previous locations. Being a newer opening, there are a few things worth keeping in mind. I noticed wait times during busy periods were on the longer side as the kitchen operations find their footing, and pricing runs on the higher end relative to what the food delivers at this stage. These are not uncommon growing pains for a food hall still establishing its rhythm, and both are the kinds of things that tend to smooth out as the vendors settle in. As it stands right now, Novo Marketplace is a promising addition to Boston's food scene and one I will keep on my radar.
