Really solid food! They don't speak perfect English but the Basil seitan is incredible

Pretty bad food. Was so disappointed as I had just driven six hours and was delighted to find a vegetarian restaurant near my Airbnb room. The avocado salad was just lettuce and a little avocado and no dressing; the vegetable fried rice was mushy and overcooked, probably leftovers; and the summer rolls were the worst I've ever had. Most of my meal went into the trash. On top of that the person taking the order was not a person who should be dealing with the public. Quite brusque and impatient. I had walked over and placed my order in person and was quite taken aback. What a waste of $25. read more

My daughter has gone vegan for the last couple of months. So we tried Zhu and were very happy. We had some steamed vegetables, vegetables spring rolls, sesame peanut cold noodles, saiten lo main and vegetable fried rice. Everything was very good. read more

We were there for the first time recently, enjoyed our meals, and will return. The M6 Seitan Strips with green beans were very good; I took half home and had the leftovers for lunch twice as tasty hot sandwiches in pita with the green beans on the side. My wife had the M11 Tofu Delight; lots of vegetables and firm fried tofu; very good too. We ordered the N13 Veg Fried Rice (we later found that brown rice came with entrees), which was good. We ordered the A12 Curry Samosas for an appetizer; they were relatively thin little triangles unlike any Indian samosas I've ever had; they looked and tasted OK and the wrap was nicely crisp, but the filling was mushy. Our desserts, Brown Rice Pudding and Chocolate Cake were very good. The servers were very nice and efficient, and the food was served within minutes. Our tab was $70 before 20% tip. I recommend Zhu. My reference for comparison is My Thai Vegan Cafe on Beach St. (2nd floor) in Boston (called Buddha's Delight years ago); everything is flavorful, superb and reasonably priced by today's standards (when I've taken my meat-eating friends there they would say that that they couldn't believe the food wasn't vegan) . read more

Hot and sour soup was decent. The soba stir-fry was very poor quality. The noodles were soggy and really everything was soggy, sad and tasteless. I like the idea of a vegetarian / vegan Chinese restaurant, but Zhu sadly underperforms. I've written the place off as a place that I will ignore and not order from again. read more

A friend recently told me there was a vegetarian/vegan Asian place in Arlington and my daughter needs to check it out. It is really hard to know if you are getting a real vegan dish because sometimes the staff will say "yes, we can do that" and then the kitchen does it the regular way (like eggs in the pad thai). It is nice to go somewhere where they really know their stuff. We ordered spring rolls and pan fried dumplings and they were good. Crispy and fresh and full of flavor and the sauces were really tasty and complimented the dishes. We got General Tso's Soy Protein for the main dish. I am a meat eater but the smell blew me a way but in a good way. Smelled just like the chicken version and the flavor was perfect. The veggies were not soggy and their was plenty of sauce to put over our rice and dish. Another awesome thing is that my daughter could get a Thai iced tea and it was very good and you would not know that it was not the real deal. We did a walk in and took out so I can not speak for the service but we did observe while waiting. I don't really see what's so special about this place, honestly. It's a bit pricey but I wouldn't mind if the food was absolutely delicious. However, I can't say I was wowed with Zhu. We ordered the pineapple fried rice and the Singapore rice noodles. Fried rice was better than the noodles but quite salty and the noodles were kinda wet- nothing like a picture that another Yelper posted a few months ago. As for the dishes: The mock meats are delicious, but I love that most dishes are also abundant with fresh, varied, and perfectly cooked vegetables. Great place to eat if you're very particular about eating fresh, plant based, no oil kind of food. We ordered the summer rolls, veg dumplings, bi bim bap rice, and Bangkok fried rice with pineapple. Fried rice was delicious! Summer rolls were fresh and the sauce it came with was great! The sauce that came with the dumplings was good too! The decor is mediocre. Although this place gets kudos for being vegan, it's really just ok & nothing great unfortunately. Maybe I have higher expectations or are expecting things to be done a certain way. There are things that end up to be spicy when it isn't stated on the menu which doesn't make sense. I remember coming before & ordering some bbq seitan dish & that was basically seitan cooked w/ sauce poured over it & wasn't really good. The dish I order is basically all noodles & not enough veggies which was sad. The taste wasn't great either so now I know that this really isn't worth the trip to Arlington. read more

Ok, went back after after a long time after my wife's taken people here for lunch many times. Soy and veg skewers (appetizer) are excellent. Got sauce on the side and it's SO much better, in controlled amounts (like 10% in total) the sauce is good. We also had seitan spare ribs, pretty tasty and fresh green beans well done. I don't get it. I read a ton of great reviews about this place, but it was just meh. Service: The hostess had a "why are you bothering me" type scowl/attitude. Our servers was nice but was being berated by the hostess I think, because she looked like she just listened to a recording of her dog getting run over. Poor girl looked about 3 seconds away from crying the whole time, although she was attentive. Appetizers: Both our appetizers were great, I had the crispy soy nugget, which was amazing, probably one of the best appetizers I have ever had. You get a star for that. Main Dishes: Meh. I had some sort of dish that ended up tasting like poorly made kimchi. It was actually pretty boring. Just not good. At all. My partners dish was equally bland, although they enjoyed it more than I did. I couldn't even bring myself to steal bites of it when she wasn't looking, which is rare. Dessert: Tried rice pudding and I think a cake or something they had special, I can't remember the 2nd dessert exactly. The rice pudding was...bland. Like no taste. The cake was clearly one of those ones you get in the fridge case at a supermarket, only warmed in a microwave. Atmosphere: Noisy millennials shouting at each other. I don't know if everyone between the ages of 20 and 33 has hearing loss from a life of wearing ear-buds or what. But really, there's no need to excitedly shout your boring stories about your boring pointless lives. You're not making up for lack of personality or character by amplifying the volume at which you render your mundane milquetoast recollections of some awful craft-beer you had. Even the older people that were there were shouting constantly. This one lady pulls out her phone, puts it on speaker at full blast and starts having a conversation with what was apparently her partners. I kept whispering "dump her" at an elevated volume to try and plant the seed in the other person's subconscious. After that riff-raff cleared out, it was actually decent inside; tables were cleanish, artwork on the walls was nice, etc. Bathroom: The toilet was leaking all over the place. Which is gross enough on its' own, but here's the issue: Since my last review some time ago I have become incredibly wealthy. You know when people find those half-unfrozen mammoth or mastodon carcasses in the tundra? I pay to have a chunk carved off from whatever mega-fauna is thawing out and ship it to my cobbler. On this particular day I was wearing my mastodon leather shoes. Which were subsequently coated in the spewings of the toilet. I may have to get on my private jet and fly to a desert island you've never even heard of just to get them to dry out. Not good times. Really though, the toilet leaked from the bowl when flushed. Gross gross gross. Overall: It wasn't terrible, but other than that amazing appetizer this was nothing I saw here that even reached the bar of 'average'. Really disappointed in this place. They marked our food delivered and never delivered the food. When we called to see what happened, they tried to tell us our order was cancelled and that we needed to order again. We had never cancelled the order. The woman on the phone said our food was at the restaurant and we needed to order again after already paying. She was overly pushy and very rude. She kept saying the same thing and not listening to us at all. Would not recommend at all. Still very good food with awesome COVID safe protections in place for food pickup [see photo I posted of handmade plywood wall with plexiglass windows that slide up to grab your order, with hand sani close by!). Fast, hearty helpings of vegan food. Partner orders everytime the seitan spareribs which come on blistered green beans and with brown rice and miso soup. I'm not vegetarian or vegan, but I have come here with Vegan friends. I can honestly say that I found the food tasty and flavorful. It's nice that you can take a Vegan friend/loved one here and watch as they take in all of the options they now have to choose from. The egg rolls were very yummy and fresh. I ordered the General Tsao tofu, and honestly, you wouldn't be able to tell it wasn't chicken. The sauce made that dish and I highly recommend it. Last minute dinner decision for me and my boyfriend. We didn't even know it was vegan which was a pleasant surprise and gave me tons of options. The delivery was quick. My boyfriend who eats meat said he didn't miss having meat and it tasted great. We got the sweet and sour soy protein and the orange Seitan, which were both fabulous. Was here with my immediate family for mother's day. I have to say, I'm glad I made a reservation - it became increasingly popular at the evening went on! None of us are vegan, but it is Kosher. I have to say, if i didn't know we were eating vegan, I might not have recognized it 100%. I mean, the food does differ from the taste of meat, obviously, but the flavor was so powerful and delicious I was ok with it! We had the spring rolls, the samosas, BBQ seitan, and Yam fries for apps... orange chicken, general tsao, basil soy protein, BBQ soy protein ribs, etc... all was so delicious and for the low cost... 6$ an app, and 15$ an entree - well worth the price. Will definitely visit again!!! Food was NOT too heavy. Didn't leave feeling bloated and disgusting and I finished my entire plate (large portion). I did leave feeling very full, which I had feeling ... but i did eat my ENTIRE plate. Ha read more

Zhu is probably one of my favorite vegetarian restaurants ever. It has a great selection of food that is normally not vegetarian. It has great food that the kids enjoys and is very healthy. My husband and I used to visit Zhu every few months for over 2 years. However, the last 3 times the service has been awful. Hands down, one of my favorite restaurants in the Boston area now. Their appetizers are fantastic, the entrees are great, their desserts are also tasty and they have a great wine menu. Everything I could ask for in a restaurant AND they deliver! Prices: definitely Boston city prices for dinner, but very much worth it. The quality and the quantity is there and I didn't feel like I wasn't getting my money's worth. My favorites are the following: the summer rolls, the BBQ seitan, the Singapore rice noodles, and the sesame tofu. I also recommend the fried chocolate ice cream and the chocolate cake. read more
