Our tour guide, Al, showed us such an amazing experience! He was friendly, patient, funny, knowledgeable of the area, and of course, has tons of stories to share! Super laid back and very professional! Depending on the amount of people you with, the price of canyoneering will decrease. Before you go on the trip, make sure you use the bathroom. The drive up to Lambs Knoll was about 30mins and the hike up was about another 30 mins. Instructions and safety took about 10 mins and next thing you know, you're strapped up and ready to go! With a group of 4, Al made each of us feel comfortable on each course. He didn't rush us off the mountain and even offered to continue on to do more rappelling. If we didn't leave our mom on a souvenir shopping spree for 4 hours, I would've agreed for more! He even made me feel all skinny believing that I can squeeze myself between the slot canyons!! Haha! That was an adventure in and of itself. The Slot Canyons were one of my top 10 things to do while living in Utah and I'm glad I got to see how beautiful it is in person. The scenery was amazing, but unfortunately we didn't get much time to enjoy it. The entire trip seemed rushed and the "Half-Day" event was only about 1 hour and 40 minutes. We only stopped once or twice for a minute or two to actually look around and take in the views. I'm not sure how much training or guidance we were supposed to get, but I'm guessing it was more than we were actually given. read more

My husband and I took a 3 day instructional canyoneering course with Zion Mountain School and we could not be happier with the course and the experience. Our instructor was Jeremy and he was awesome (picture Jack Black, but with lighter hair!). Laid back, funny, yet very knowledgeable and professional with safety on his mind at all times. We chose to go with Zion Mountain School because the price difference for a three day course between them and Zion Adventure Company was significantly different. Not only that but Zion Adventure Company leads trips on specified days with multiple parties together. Zion Mountain School caters to each customer so you can choose your own dates and have a private guide. We also had to change our dates at the last minute and they were very accommodating. I wanted to try canyoneering because it was my 30th birthday and I wanted to celebrate in a way that was exciting and encouraged growth and learning new skills. I am so happy I took this course! The goal of the course is that after the 3 days, you should feel comfortable going on a canyoneering trip on your own (for 3BIII rated canyons). Canyoneering is so much more than I thought it would be. Canyoneering, or technical hiking, is exploring canyons - the guts of the earth. Generally, canyoneering involves rappelling into the canyon and following the flood/water routes - although often there is only a small amount of water. It involves not only repelling but stemming and down climbing. Stemming is when the walls of the canyon are so close together that you can put your feet on one side and kind of sit on the other side while moving along the wall to get to the other end. Usually you are doing this to avoid water below or simply because it's too narrow to actually walk on the ground in the canyon. Down climbing is just that, climbing down from a short height by using some stemming and rock climbing techniques. Canyoneering affords you amazing views you otherwise could not see. It also makes you feel so close to the earth, literally. It's also a great problem solving activity. You have to constantly be aware of your surroundings, figure out your way through a canyon, and decide where to put your anchor so you can safely rappel down a side of a cliff. It is a slow adrenaline rush and you feel so accomplished coming out of a canyon. Jeremy was a big part of our wonderful experience. I cannot say enough good things about the great time we had with him. We went to 3 very different canyons just outside of the park and we learned different techniques as well as being more comfortable with rappelling. By the 3rd day, we were essentially leading our own canyoneering trip with our buddy Jeremy along for the ride. He was a good teacher and was knowledgeable not only about canyoneering but also the surrounding towns and flora and fauna. We highly recommend Zion Mountain School and 2 weeks after our class, we've bought all our own gear and are going back to Zion next week for some more canyoneering. If you're looking for a fantastic outdoor adventure in the Zion area, look no further than Zion Mountaineering School. There are many options in the area and it can be hard to differentiate between them, but believe me, ZMS will give you everything you're looking for and more. We booked about a week in advance and had no issues securing the tour and time slot we were looking for which was wonderful. Our group consisted of 2 couples between the ages of 20 and 30 and besides myself, we have fairly minimal outdoor experience. Our guide, Dion, took such great care of us, taking our mistakes (such as getting a rope stuck at the top of a route) in stride and helping us conquer our fears and feel very safe all the way through. It was truly an experience I will never forget, and any time I'm in the Zion area I'll definitely be returning to ZMS! read more

There was a group of four of us total that signed up for an all-day class on rappelling. The class lasted 8 hours. We were able to complete six repels each. I'm glad that they don't offer a half-day class for beginners. An 8-hour class is needed if you have never done this before. On the last Rappel all of us felt comfortable and confident that we can achieve the next day adventure we had. Our instructors name is Dion. He had plenty of patience and very knowledgeable on what he was doing. We have been coming designs for the last six years in a row. We have all done the all the popular hikes more than once. We have a new passion for canyoneering. Advice, if you have never rappelled before I suggest you take an all-day class and learn how to do it so you will be confident on your own. My niece and I spent a half-day canyoneering with Marc in Water Canyon. We're beginner canyoneers, just knowledgeable enough to be dangerous. Marc took us under his wing and showed us some of the basics, from the use of personal anchor systems to tactics for rope tossing to proper construction of 'biner blocks. We did about eight rappels from the middle route in Water Canyon down to the bottom. By the end of it, I was able to safely set up rappels for the group and lead the way using a friction hitch. Marc is a great teacher and an all-around good guy. I'm really happy we were able to hire his services on short notice, and we'd love to do it again sometime. read more

I love supporting smaller businesses and I'm super glad I came here to rent my gear for the Zion Narrows hike. They staff was informative and didn't try to upsell us or convince us to get more gear. I ended up going with the day package with socks, shoes and hiking stick and it was perfect. Initially I was handed a pretty beat up pair and I asked to exchange it for a less beat up pair and they happily exchanged it for me. I was with somebody who wanted to just rent socks and a hiking stick and the staff didn't try to upsell him at all. We picked up our gear the day before our hike and we ended up spending a full day at the Narrows so the shop was closed by the time we got there to return our gear but they have an after hours policy that was clearly stated on the door. They didn't charge us extra for returning the gear late and everything went super smoothly. I'd definitely recommend this place to anybody looking for Narrows gear! read more

I came here looking for a shower and the cost was outrageous. 5 bucks for 5 minutes? What, am I competing in the Olympic event of speed showering? It's not like I take a long time showering, but putting a time limit on shower is absurd especially when other places in town don't. Holiday weekend we decided to explore Zion National Park, but my husband also though it was good to try something new. We decided to give canyoneering a go. He signed us up for a day trip. Upon arrival we met with our guide Caleb who was a super friendly guy especially at 7am. After I explained to Caleb how frightened I am of heights, he eased my fears and explained what I could expect. During our trip to the canyons, he explained the area, how he got into the business and just shared a lot of different stories. Again, super nice guy who didn't shy away from conversation. I want to adopt him into our family. After hiking and hour or so we reached our first rapel. He took great care to ensure our safety while explaining how to use the equipment. Our first decent was about 40 feet and I was pretty damn nervous. After I reached the bottom I felt confident to tackle whatever else the day had. I may not take this on as a hobby, but my husband and I had one heck of a time we'll never soon forget. She was too busy sweeping the floors instead of coming over to help us and instead just said "whatever you see is all we have". This is where you want to go if you're a real climber that isn't familiar with the area or didn't bring any equipment. Dion took me and my two friends to a fun area with varying grades and types of climbs (slab, chimney, jugs and overhangs) and we had an amazing day. We climbed grades from 5.6 to 5.10 and could've done some sport leading if we were inclined. The area was beautiful and the rock was crazy good. read more

We visited Zion recently and did the full day Canyoneering trip with Al. Everything about the day was perfect! My partner and I have participated in a variety of adventure sports so we pick things up pretty quickly. I was concerned that by only doing the one day trip we wouldn't get the opportunity to challenge ourselves as much as we hoped. I shouldn't have worried as Al tailored the trip to suit our fitness level and gave us the opportunity to do some harder rappels even though this was our first time. I don't have enough great words to say about Al, he was an incredible guide with some fascinating insights on life. I could have listened to his view on the world for days. I felt safe at all times and had a wonderful day. I'll be back to do this again in the future. read more

Our two families (three adults, four girls ages 6 - 9) went out on a half-day canyoneering trip with Caleb and Jan in late November. They were very good with the kids, providing patient and thorough instruction, and very safe guidance for the repelling. The location they chose was perfect - not overly strenuous, but just enough adventure that the kids had memorable experience. Given the time of year, we started at 10am with paperwork (actually electronic forms) and a little bit of orientation at the store. They drove us in their vehicles to the canyon location, which was up Kolob Terrace Road on the western side of Zion Park - about a 30 minute drive. Due to regulations, no one can have paid guided canyoneering into the park, so the actually location was just outside the park. The guides are knowledgeable about the park, geology, and certainly the activities in the park, so even the conversation to/from the canyon was interesting. At the start location, we got our equipment (helmets, harnasses). There was a short 15 minute hike to the start of the short canyon. Then we started with the first repel, which was the longest, of 40 feet, followed by shorter repels of 10-15 feet. There was a couple slightly high drops to climb down (4-5 feet), and a narrow slot to navigate at the end. It was a good intro to canyoneering given the age of the kids. The staff was polite, professional and proactive. We originally selected a date for our trip that came at the tail end of a few days of rain. They recommended in advance that we change the reservation date to have a better experience, and we moved it to the end of our trip, which they accommodated, and definitely made for a less cold and wet experience. We can highly recommend Zion Mountain School for a canyoneering trip with kids. read more

Mike is a well organized, knowledgeable and skillful guide. He provided all the information and instruction necessary for me to feel comfortable in the "vertical world". He really went the extra miles to make sure I was comfortable (great belay locations!) and educated (reviewing technique, "rope tricks", etc.). Took my family of teenage boys on a half day canyoneering course with Ethan as our guide. We had a wonderful time exploring the rocks and slot canyons of Zion. Ethan was a calm and steady teacher as we repelled down 80ft cliffs for the first time. The company is smaller than the other guide outfits and does family only private tours so you are in a more comfortable environment. Tough to put into words how amazing this trip really was. Our group of 7 signed up for a 3 day canyoneering trip and we were all just blown away! In the beginning, we were worried because there wasn't much communication from ZMS and they are a little tough to get a hold of on the phone and via email. So we had no idea really of what to expect. But rest assured, these guys are experts! You are in extremely safe and capable hands. Steffan and Alan were our guides and they have an incredible talent for making the impossible seem so simple and easy! They give you confidence to get thru any obstacle, no matter how crazy it looks! These guys are just fantastic guides is all I can say. If you are looking for an adventure, I highly recommend that you book a trip with these guys; you will not regret it. On a side note, it may seem expensive for "backpacking," but it's so much more than that. After coming back from the trip, I feel like what we paid was a total bargain! read more

Rented our gear for the Narrows. Their package was $43/person which included socks, shoes, wet suit and stick. Staff was super friendly. Minus 1 star because their gear looked beat up and when you take off the suit you smell like damped clothes - you know that smell when you've forgotten the clothes in the washer. The other minus star is because staff had said they would refund me if not 100% satisfied. You see, I wanted dry suits and the shop that I wanted was Zion Adventure Company, but walked in here accidentally - we were already here and the guy said we wouldn't need them (the dry suits). However, my daughter fell in the narrows (she's fine) but she was cold and couldn't go to much more into the narrows after the fall, so she and I turned back and my husband and son went a little further in. I'm thinking if we had gotten the dry suits we could have gone further. So when we got back to the shop I told the guy this hoping he would offer some kind of refund but he didn't. I was too exhausted to pursue it and I hate when places don't honor their word. So my advise, if you're from Southern California where it's always warm and/or have little tolerances for the cold - get the dry suits. I saw other hikers wearing them and their gear looked like it was in way better shape. Their package was $52/person. $9 difference that would had made our experience better. read more

I took three of my kids and a friend out for a day trip with Stephan. We had a blast. He was an excellent guide and was very entertaining as well. As an old guy with a fear of heights, I can tell you that having a guide with a sense of humor made the first rappel a lot more comfortable.
