Right off the main street in lovely Chestnut Hill is an amazing candy store...Zipf's. If you're driving, slow down, it's easy to miss in the little alcove off the street. It's very reminiscent of an awesome candy store in NYC. Tiny space & 'choc' full of candy from every era & variety. This place is a treat, and not just because it's filled with chocolaty goodness, gummy delights and crunchy creations. Zipf's is located on an alley, off of busy Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill, and is about the size of a walk in closet. It can get pretty packed in there because of the limited space, but don't let it get you down - their handmade candies are worth the wait. I always go for the chocolate covered marshmallows, my oldest digs the milk chocolate caramels and the little one freaks out for the gummy frogs. They also have those classic Willy Wonka style big lollypops - hey, who eats those things anyway (or gumdrops for that matter...)? Service is friendly - note that you have to buy at least 1/4 lb. of the chocolates (too bad, right?) and can't buy them by the piece. I always feel like I'm walking down Diagon Alley when I go to Zipf's. I think it has been there, unchanged, for about 300 years. Hopefully it will remain standing for 300 more (or at least long enough for me to take my future grandkids for a visit). read more

I agree with the reviews of others. Charming LITTLE candy store with many old school favorites and some unusual chocolates that I haven't seen, like dark chocolate covered marzipan. I came in initially for some candied ginger and saw that they also sold dark chocolate covered candied ginger. Oh. My. I didn't know candy could taste like that. In early December I spoke to Paula, the owner of Zipf's Candies. I asked her what she was doing to assist senior shoppers during Covid. Basically, she offered to do anything to accommodate me. Curbside, delivery, open early or stay late--all these were options! So, we arranged for me to solo shop prior to opening the store. This candy store is not large, but is packed and neatly stacked with a lot of choices for your sweet tooth. The candy lady who waited on us and our little granddaughter was also sweet and patient. At Christmas they have those clear colored "toy" lollipops that one doesn't see anymore. 'So delicious and a real treat for Christmas stockings. Those are a Pennsylvania product. Of course they have chocolates, "penny candy," lollipops, roasted nuts, marzipan, various gummies, choc tipped popcorn, cinnamon imperials, Reeds lifesavers, and one of the BEST selections of licorice from various European countries. This is one of those candy stores that every little town use to have. Thankfully, Chestnut Hill still has one. read more

I absolutely LOVE this candy shop. It's one of the cutest, friendliest establishments I've ever had the pleasure of frequenting. Zipf's candies are a must have during the holiday season, especially Christmas and Easter. I can't tell you how many of my friends and co-workers have raved about the chocolates I've bought here. I brought a friend to this store a few weeks ago, she was in need of party favors for a throwback gathering I recommended this establishment as a possibility due to their choice of vintage candies regrettably we were treated very rudely by a young woman who worked there she was not helpful at all and seemed annoyed we were there. This little hidden gem is the best "find" in Chestnut Hill right down from the corner. Ya gotta go down a lil quaint walkway to find this place along with a few other cute stores and a nice sitting area. The store is adorable! The staff is sweet and helpful (especially the young man lol)! There are so many candies to choose from it's too hard NOT to get a ton of stuff. My favorite are the dark chocolate caramels and dark chocolate pretzels for a rich treat. I love the tons of bagged up old school candies are great to fill up my candy jars. The holidays specialties are awesome too! The best and biggest chocolate dipped strawberry I ever had in my life too! Can't wait to see what they get in for Halloween and Thanksgiving. read more

This is a throwback to my childhood. The original Zipf's was located in Reading where I grew up, so I was happy to see this place as I strolled In Chestnut hill awhile ago. The Swedish fish and old school candies are all so reminiscent of my younger carefree days. The ladies that work there are so friendly and very helpful. I even inquired about a candy that's tough to find and the young woman behind the counter said she would be getting it in soon(peachy penguins) :-) One of the cutest little candy spots. I haven't been to the shop, but I received two small boxes of chocolates from this store as a gift. 4 different chocolates in each box -- all very, very good. Best was the pseudo-peppermint patty one; I don't see a lot of other places try to recreate that, so it was a nice surprise.
