My whole life my hair has been frizzy, out of control, and I didn't know why. When I moved to America it calmed down a lot (I used to live in Malaysia where it's hot and humid year round) so I didn't need to do much exploration. I visited Shan Hair for the first time last week and I will definitely be a repeat and long time customer. Kiki is fantastic and was able to find my groove with respect to my curls. She listened to everything I described that I wanted and turned that into the best curly cut I've ever had. I highly recommend her. Had a really bad experience where the front of my hair was uneven and way shorter than meant to be giving me a mullet basically there was so in-between pieces so a failed shaping of my face. I brought up that is was clearly uneven and the staff did not believe me even though it was very clear. The ended up having to cut the other side short to match which lost a lot of growth for me. I have been getting curly haircuts for 27 years. In the past 15 years that I've lived in Boston, I've had a difficult time finding someone that can cut curly hair really well...until now. I had a cut with Kiki, and I told her a few things I was looking for. I had several lengths where the transitions between them were very choppy and noticeable. My previous stylist kept missing this even though I explained that I wanted to address that every time. Kiki did a great job blending the different lengths together and styled my hair perfectly. She's super nice, but (thankfully) not overly chatty while doing her thing. She puts her head down and gets it done! The day I was there, she was juggling me and two other clients (which is not typical, there was a mixup) and I still made it back to my car before my parking meter ran out. I found this place on Google, I was looking for a devacut for a reasonable price and one that didn't have a waiting list! Stumbled on this place and I'm SO glad I did! Other curly hair salons near me are small and either not taking new patients or have really outdated websites that scared me away (I love being able to book online and avoid human interaction;) I booked with Kessandra, I could tell she was new because there were no Yelp reviews with her name in them. She came across pretty cold on the phone (when I called to see if she would cut my daughters hair - which she gave a hard pass) and also to let her know I was running late. When I walked in, she checked me in but continued doing work on the computer. Fine with me, i was late anyway. But I noticed some tension between her and another stylist and then the boss said to get off the computer bc she was already late for the appointment and that was a tense exchange. I thought maybe I made a terrible mistake by taking my chances on the new girl but I'm happy to report it was the best haircut of my curly haired life! Kessandra is trans and she mentioned getting harassed at her last salon. She has a tough exterior, which makes total sense if you have a history of being judged and harassed, but once that icy exterior melted, she was so delightful! Not only funny and warm, but she is an amazing teacher. She explained every step, how she was combatting my frizz issues, what to do at home, how to use the products. I didn't think I could do anything to get rid of frizz, but after she styled my hair it was nothing but beautiful healthy frizz free locks. I've had curly hair since puberty, over 20 years, and have had many different types of curly cuts, including Devacuts, but this was the best. I'm sure the other stylists are as good or better. After months of research, I found Shan Hair. I've been coming here for about 3 years. The salon is really clean and it's a nice atmosphere. Last two times, I've been with Mikayla and have loved my hair cuts. She definitely listens to what you have to say and I appreciate that. I think prices are very affordable as well. Last time I went, I felt like styling my hair was rushed and resulted in a very frizzy hairstyle (this hasn't happen before). The one thing that makes me give 4 stars is the fact that I always feel tension between the staff. Although everyone is doing their own thing, it doesn't feel like they get along well most of the time. Overall, highly recommend this salon and especially Mikayla!! I had been trying to get an appointment since September as I had heard good things. I waited months and months for an appointment. Today I got an email from them that said my appointment had been cancelled. Turns out they had left me phone messages - except I had already told them TWICE I couldn't hear and can't use the phone. Maybe they are good with hair but they are not great with customers or the disabled. Yes, I accidentally missed a 5 min consultation (not a hair appt) as I mixed up the dates... as I already explained. But leaving voice messages for someone who can't hear is absurd AND THEN publicly posting that you "tried to reach me" is not accurate. Clearly showing respect to anyone with a disability is not a priority. The good news is that I at least received a personal response to my review - most of the other responses look like they were just cut and pasted over and over. read more

Mikayla did a fantastic Deva cut on my curly hair the other day! I live in Boston but deeply mistrust salons here. So for the past 10 years I've gone to the Deva Salon when Im in NYC for cuts. But since I had not visited the city in a while, it had been 2 years since I had a cut and I'd been relying on a bun forever. My hair looked like I lived in a cave when I had it out of an elastic, & that's how I arrived at the salon! lol - I needed help & kindness, & i found it here. CUT: Mikayla was wonderful. Not only was she energetic & entertaining to chat with, she was super precise & gave me just as good of a deva cut as I would get in NYC, and for less $$. She managed this even though my hair was 50 different lengths when I came in, due to my two years of "self-managed" hair cutting! My hair now is shaped, healthy, and I'm not hiding it under a bun every day. COLOR: Mikayla also is known for her hair coloring. when I arrived she was finishing a client who had the most natural strawberry curls I'd ever seen. I couldn't believe that she was normally a brunette - they looked gorgeous, and her curls were healthy. I didn't get my color done when I got my cut, but based on what I saw I'd trust her to do that too. GENEROSITY: What blew me away though was that she offered me help understanding how to color my own hair (my hair grows fast & needs color every 2 weeks which I do at home myself as I cannot afford to do in a salon). When I told her about my budget issues she offered to help me. She gave me excellent advice on how to tweak the color formula I was using at home to have better results. I've NEVER had a colorist help me like that! Usually it's all about getting you to pay for more services with them, which is frustrating when you cannot afford to spend $500 on your hair each month! But she was kind & helpful; it really made me trust her & the salon. Also, when I did ask her what a single process cost, I found out that her price is quite reasonable, so if you want color talk to her about what you can do. PRACTICAL STUFF: 1. if you drive here bring quarters for the parking meters. 2. If you get a deva cut, try to get there early, AND be cool with waiting a bit if your stylist has to start late. Deva cuts can take more or less time because curly hair is different on each customer, so DON'T schedule your appointment on a day you are on a strict schedule. Please be understanding if your stylist is late & if you need to plan your day, plan at least TWO HOURS. 3. Important: you need to come in with your hair down & dry so that your stylist can cut CORRECTLY. then you need to be washed & dried under the dryer until you are COMPLETELY dry again so the stylist can re-check the curl pattern & cut, and fix anything uneven. I mention this because I notice some other reviews in which folks were impatient with scheduling issues: a deva cut takes time, and can be a bit unpredictable in terms of how long it takes for each customer. This is why you should schedule your cut with plenty of time in case your appointment is delayed or takes longer than scheduled, & why you should plan on these scheduling issues when you make your appointment! Being patient will only help you in the long run: The more you can be chill about this the better cut you will get because your stylist won't be stressed if you aren't stressed. :) read more

Okay, Thanks to Yelp...I found Shan three years ago during my move to Boston and my long-distance (but forced separation) to my old hairdresser in Pittsburgh. Needless to say, I'm glad I moved! Shan is a wonderful hairdresser and friend to have! Not only is he consistent (I can sit in the chair and he basically knows what I want now) But he is meticulous and an obviously hair wizard/master/perfectionist. He specializes in curly hair but I keep a short/pixie haircut and he is the best at maintaining it and asking me what I want to change. Perks: Consistency! My hair always looks great Uses great products (my roommates always want to buy them bc of how good I smell after) Fun, Friendly, and Professional personality Plays great music during haircut Is up to par on technology/facebook/twitter/foursquare/scavngr deals and can fit you in if he has time (Has stayed late for me) Totally normal, expected, and not over-priced pricing as well. I've heard wonderful things about this place from colleagues, friends and family members, so I immediately booked my very first devacut experience with hairstylist Mikayla. My appointment was scheduled for 3pm (1 hour before they close) and my appointment felt rushed. The actually cut was okay but the styling? my goodness, i left with flat hair. my hair is pretty curly and i left with waves - i was unhappy and confused. My stylist could see how unhappy I was by my facial expressions and said, "you know your hair - i bet when you style it it'll be better" the whole point of this experience was to teach me what i should be doing and what products i should be using. I'm bummed my experience wasn't the best but the reviews on yelp show everyone else had a lovely one. I don't think I'm ever coming back. read more

I cannot recommend Shan hair enough! I have had a lot of struggles with finding someone who can cut curly hair correctly without charging a fortune for it. I had Carrie cut my hair, and she did an amazing job. Her attention to detail is insane -- she spent almost 50 cutting each curl on my head to perfectly fit the image I had in mind. it's clear that she and everyone else at Shan Hair is incredibly skilled with curly hair, unlike a lot of hairstylists. As a fan of the Curly Girl technique, imagine how happy I was to discover that he has pursued extensive training in NYC at Deva Salon. (So much so that he is becoming a trainer himself!) I got my first Deva cut with Antonella about 2 years ago (2017) and it was amazing! My whole life I had been getting my hair cut by someone who treated it like straight hair, and Antonella did an amazing job. Unfortunately, the last 3 hair cuts I have gotten from her have been super disappointing. I have been telling her for 2 years that I want to grow my hair out and she consistently cuts it way too short. Echoing similar recent reviews about her, she seems to just do her own thing and disregards the desire to keep length by cutting the top/back to match the shortest curl. Also, the last few times I've been there she has been super distracted, watching/listening to other people and going to check her schedule on the computer IN THE MIDDLE of my haircut multiple times. I am super bummed to find a different salon, because Shan Hair is super clean and cute, and Shan seems like a professional and friendly business owner. Also they recently got a new girl (Toriah) who styled my hair and I was BLOWN AWAY. Changed my life! I had my first appointment with Kesandra at Shan Hair yesterday and she was amazing. She really listened to what I wanted - I showed her pictures of the cut I wanted and talked about how my hair felt lifeless and flat. She also went above and beyond - I mentioned offhand that I don't like to spend a ton of time doing my hair in the morning, so she used a technique that creates natural volume so I could basically blow dry and go in the morning. She talked me through the steps of what she was doing and why which was awesome. She's so friendly and attentive - I can't recommend her enough!! The salon itself was clean and really cute inside. He's being doing my hair for about three and a half years now, and I'm always so very happy with the results. We've mixed it up a little bit over time, but generally I just give him free reign to do my hair and make it awesome. I went in the new salon last week (was previously the space for Pure Hair Design, before they moved to Harrison Ave.) and it looks fantastic. It's quiet (minus the awesome music selection), well lit, clean, and decorated very well. The floors are nice and new, the wall paper is fun, and I love the chandelier. I walked out with a third highlight color to go brighter blonde for the summer, and way more layers. It looks awesome and I feel ready for summer. It makes me sad to give shan hair 1 star. I want to be happy with my haircut but honestly and truly I am traumatized. After leaving my curls alone since November, then spending 5 days in Florida, I realized I was due for a cleanup. I decided to try Antonio since he is so highly recommended. Antonio was running behind when I arrived and we got started about 30 minutes late. I don't mind that since everyone deserves enough time spent on their tresses. I explained in detail to Antonio exactly what I wanted, and how much length I wanted to retain. The cut took about 10 minutes. Instead of chin-length ringlets in front and a short tapered back, I got a teenage Peter Brady cut. I now have a floppy little bowl cut with the beginnings of half-curls above the tops of my ears. And my wedding is in 4 weeks. I'm considering extensions but I'll probably just get a wig. read more

Although it doesn't change what happened, I feel it only fair to update here since he is trying to rectify the situation. Well, I hate having to do this, but here goes.. while these guys are admittedly hair geniuses, I am moving over to Mop Salon next door because of the "customer service" (read: attitude) I keep getting. I'm done. Short story... I had an appointment scheduled for the morning of what ended up being the rescheduled Patriots' victory parade. Between that and 5 feet of snow in the South End, I did not have the ability to leave work early enough to ensure I could get to the salon and park in time for my appointment. So I did was I thought was the courteous thing and canceled. Anthony replied he'd see me at my appointment as scheduled. I wrote back and insisted on canceling, saying I'd be happy to pay the last-minute cancellation fee. I got back another email saying okay, but HE gets everywhere HE needs to be on time and if I just "leave myself a little extra time, I can make all my appointments". Thank you for the life lesson on how to get places on time. This is exactly why I canceled - because I did not have the ability to be punctual given the circumstances and didn't want to waste your time. This is beside the point. If I'm canceling, decide if you want to charge me and ask when I'd like to reschedule. Please don't lecture me. This was not my first unpleasant experience here, so while I love their cuts, I'm taking my business elsewhere. read more

Because I am seeing him in 3 hours, I've decided is time for my much overdue yelp review of Shan :) What can I say? He is an artist! And such a sweetheart to boot. I regularly get stopped on the street (or in elevators or the waiting room of various doctors' offices, etc.) and asked where I go to get my haircut. At one point, I actually had a running list of all the people I referred to Shan, but after going to him for the last 5 years, I have completely lost track. The best part about his haircuts, is that they grow out so well. I can usually go at least 3-4 months between cuts. Even though he is a curly hair expert, he still knows how to cut and color the hell out of my partially-straight, partially-wavy, cowlick-ed, super-thick head of hair. Which is no small task! Thought I found a good place that was a good value. I went here a month ago and had very good haircut. Fast forward to the next hair cut, they booked me with the wrong stylist and I got a bad haircut with an ice cold shampoo. I really wish they didn't make a mistake with my stylist or that I had walked out the door and rescheduled because the second cut was really poor. I would call Shan "Shan the curly hair magician", because he really is :) The main difference between his "magic" and others' "magic" is that Shan's "magic" stays. He taught me how to style my hair effortlessly, so now I get similar results on a daily basis! For me it was a huge deal breaker (particularly the effort part), because I don't see any value in getting a hair cut if I can't re-style my hair to show it off. And apparently I did show it off: I don't remember getting so many compliments on my hair for so many weeks in a row. Sometimes multiple compliments from the same people. Really nice experience today. I went to get a touchup and to see how they work with curly hair. I was helped by Ms (Angellena?) Delucca. She was very kind, but most of all very skilled in and serious about washing and styling curls making optimal use of the DevaCurl product. The result is impressive! She created very well defined curls with nice soft hair (normally I use way to heavy product to be able to define my curls, but clearly that is not needed). I have had a similar kind of treatment in an other salon and was not really impressed then. Clearly it makes a difference were you get your DevaCurl treatment.
