I had been nervous about trying a new curly-hair salon after moving to Boston, but I'm so glad I tried Anita Kurl and now it's my new place!! The salon is so cute--it always makes me feel like I'm in the Emerald City. I've had my hair cut by Mikayla twice now and she's done an amazing job. I even decided to try bangs for the first time on my last visit! It can be challenging to get a first appointment, just because I think they fill up fast! I've already referred another curly-haired friend here, so I'd highly recommend checking out Anita Kurl if you want a high-quality curly cut with stylists who are very experienced with cutting curly hair. read more

Its bad enough that this salon did a hideous job on my daughters hair but then Kandyce had the gall to write my daughter and tell her to have her mother call them instead of posting an honest review. They sent this message to her on her birthday and needless to say, being that my daughter did not know I posted the review, she was very upset and as a result of that email from the salon, we did not have our shopping or lunch day. I paid for her hair to be done as a birthday present and could not believe the job they did and their attitude about ruining her hair. My daughter is a sweet, kind and compliant individual who would never say a word about how horrible the dye job was, so I did instead. In the U.S. today you cannot confront or call anyone out about their behavior or bad service without having additional bad behavior piled on top of that. I would not recommend this salon. This message I am currently writing was supposed to be a follow up to the nonsense reply to my origional review, but my first review was replaced by this. I attached a photo as well but that has been removed from this review. I will still try and get that photo posted so you can see what a hack job they did. I scheduled an appointment +3 months in advance of an important event. I got a call less than 2 months before my appointment and told they have to cancel because the stylist I was scheduled with is going on vacation. I asked to be accommodated with another stylist on the same day, even a later time, but they simply said they could only see me 3 days earlier that week. Even with a great styling job, curly hair for event purposes will not look good 3 days later. I was extremely disappointed with the customer service and will not be recommending this salon to any curly-haired folks or returning to them for my needs. Skip Anita Kurl, and find a place that treats you right! I originally posted this on Google, and they replied indicating I had hung up before coming to a remedy. I remained on the call for over 10 minute trying to beg for an appointment slot. They stated they had no other availability that week, which at the time was still 2 months in advance. I even asked if they could maybe contact any client that was most recently scheduled on my original booked date to see if perhaps they could be cancelled instead of me, and then offered the Tuesday appointment instead of me. Explain it as a double booking mistake. The staff refused to try this. They offered to add me to their waitlist. Ultimately I was not helped to an appropriate level. read more

I barely ever leave reviews but after this haircut I unfortunately felt the need to write one. I went in for my typical trim (to make my layers again for a nice shape and maybe a little off the ends if needed for hair health). The stylist and I even had a conversation beforehand of wants and not wants, where I specified these instructions and we both acknowledged that I wanted my hair to be shoulder length at the shortest. However, my hair is now barely chin length, my framing curls (usually cheek to chin length when discussed with the stylist) are by my eyebrows. I don't know if Jorden forgot about the concept of shrinkage but honestly I'm very saddened by my results, and every time I look in the mirror I get sadder. I understand people have bad days and maybe this was just a rare bad haircut for her, but I'm just sad that my years of hard work growing long and healthy curls are gone and it'll take a long time for my hair to grow back to the length I liked it at. Especially since I paid more money for an advanced stylist and ended up with a worse haircut. I will say the service was excellent, everyone took great care of me and were very understanding when I was 15 min late due to traffic. There's nothing the salon can do honestly, since they can't make hair grow back faster, but just writing this review to warn others keep a close eye on the haircut you're getting here so the same thing doesn't happen, even with an advanced stylist. read more

I love Anita Kurl. They do a beautiful job with my hair and it's been a few months since I last went but I've been a client for several years now. It's a very nicely decorated salon with a great vibe. The staff are kind, personable and I love my stylist, Mikayla. I usually go for a super curly cut or to dye my hair and always leave looking more confident than when I came in. I also love that you can buy products that are really for curly hair in the salon. The main 2 bummers which I definitely understand are the prices of the services and the wait for the next appointment. I do think it goes to show that Anita Kurl knows what it's doing because so many clients return and the wait for appointments are because they do a great job. I would 100% return. Parking is street parking (metered) so you have to pay either at the meter or at your phone and be aware of the time on your meter. I went here a few year ago for a regular hair cut and had a good experience. I returned two days ago for a curly cut and took off ~6in of hair. Peabo knew how to cut it for the best shape that flows with my natural curl pattern without trying to justify the process. He and the rest of the staff were friendly and knowledgeable educating me on techniques and products without feeling like they were trying to sell me on a product. AND I bought product. I NEVER buy product unless I find it on sale, but I felt confident in my ability to repeat the steps given how thoroughly/patiently they were with my processing pace. This is my second time visiting Anita Kurl, and honestly I came away disappointed. I think they should take into account the type of curl, porosity and thickness of the hair to wash it as well as for the application of "styling" products. By not getting the right products, my hair dried with less curl than I normally have and that didn't help the cut look good. Waiting six months to go out looking forward to shaving my hair :( The staff is nice, maybe I was just unlucky but I feel sad because I don't like the way I look. read more

Name a better curly salon in Boston....or anywhere for that matter. I'll wait. I have been to Anita Kurl multiple times and have learned a lot from the stylists here about caring for my curls. I am so grateful that this salon exists! A few suggestions: I wish they would do tutorials online or something to bring all that curly hair wisdom to the masses. Another suggestion: please offer more in terms of curly styles (braids, etc.). But I get that they're a curly hair salon exclusively and they're doing very well what they know how to do! Another recommendation is to offer, use, and have their stylists recommend better, cleaner/CGM (Curly Girl Method) products which don't contain silicones, sulfates, etc. Some of the products they use look great when I get my hair done there, but I probably wouldn't want to use them long-term with my curly strands. read more

Where has this place (and the Deva cut) been all my life? It doesn't feel like an overstatement to say that Peabo at Anita Kurl has changed my life. I've had a big mess of curls all my life, and I've always tried to just "deal with" them--straightening, Keratin, frizzy ponytails, etc. I decided to try a salon that specifically focused on curls, and I'll never go anywhere else again. The cut and styling recommendations mean that my morning hair routine takes maybe 2 minutes, and when my hair dries it looks just as good as it did when I left the salon. Peabo took the time to ask me what my existing routine looked like, what my previous cuts had done, and what I hoped to be able to do with the new cut. He was very patient in explaining the Deva method and what he intended to do before we got started. The cut is dry, and then your hair is washed and styled--Peabo also walked me through how to use the products he recommended. I walked out with my natural curls looking their absolute best, and with more confidence than any straight blowout has ever made me feel. Today, I had the cut again and also had Peabo do my first-ever color. Again, he walked me through each step and double-checked that I was okay with the decisions he was making. He was meticulous in ensuring that the results would be both natural and flattering. I loved the results! Had my deva cut with Peabo and I am amazed how curly he got my hair. I had a lot of damage and I knew it had to be drastically cut. The back of my hair is shorter than wat I was expecting but definitely needed this cut to happen sooner or later . Now I'm embracing my curls! Peabo was very informative with how to take care of my curls and I will definitely be back for a trim up when my hair gets longer. I received a decent haircut here. The stylist took her time and explained in great detail what the process of taking care of my curls should look like. I'm taking one star off because my stylist did take off too much hair. I emphasized how much I wanted to keep it long, grow it out, and cut only the bare minimum. I was pretty surprised at how much was cut off. It was mainly around my face framing layers. I had asked for some face framing, which I interpreted as a maybe an inch or two wide of a "chunk" on each side. Instead, the cut was actually quite deep diagonally into my hair, so from the front, it looks like I have a bob, and from the back, i have long hair. From the side, you see it does join up- it's not like I have a mullet- but it is quite an aggressively steep cut away from my face. As a result, my hair lacks a lot of the fullness I had before. Generally, stylists say you can come in to tweak a cut, but I'm not really sure what tweaks can be made about too much volume being cut away, without losing the length in the back. This isn't a reflection of the stylist's technical skill or talent- it is just a comment on communication - I wish she had checked with me on how much was going to be cut away, especially since I expressed being sensitive about the length. I won't be returning to this salon because I won't be living in Boston when I'm due for a next cut, but if I did, and for those who want to come here, I'd suggest asking them to literally show you on your hair where they will cut and how much they will cut off. read more

I honestly can't say anything but great things about my experience here. I have been getting curly cuts for 7+ years and noticed that my current salon just wasn't up to par like it used to be. I drove by this salon for years and finally decided to try it. I could not have been happier. Peabo was AMAZING! I love how customer friendly and technologically forward Anita Kurl is. They list all their services and prices online and it's incredibly easy to schedule online as well. Once there, the salon is clean and beautiful, you're promptly seen, and efficiently cared for. At the check out, you can tap to pay and tip using your card. It is such a painless process and given how rudimentary (yet far more expensive) other places are, it truly stands out. Stylist wise, I've seen several and they're all very nice. They do make sure to ask what you want and are very professional and complimentary throughout. They're pretty mindful of length for the most part and I can see how their cutting process has evolved, now incoportating sectioning the hair which I think helps with length retention. For those with type 4 hair, I will caution they encourage a lot of shrinkage here - fine for looser curlies, but as a fine hair type 4A, I always leave looking like a child with very shrunken curls! So, it's hard for me to really appreciate the end cut and I have to immediately try to stretch or usually just wash again / stretch the next day since the products they use can make dry stretching difficult (since they're actually good at their job of tightly holding curls). But I can tell once I do, that the ends are nicer and detangling so, so much easier. Speaking of products, they primarily use Ouidad and Innersense here. They all feel super nice and at the end, they tell you all the products they used, why, and their process (how much / application technique). So you can replicate the style at home if you choose! read more

I'm a guy and have always kept my hair short. Then, COVID happened and I didn't get a haircut for a year. As my hair grew out, I started to see curls, but I didn't know what to do with them! I tried researching online, but there's a LOT of information and I got overwhelmed as someone new to curls. Then, I found the Anita Kurl Salon! After seeing pictures of her work on Instagram, I booked a Custom Curl Transformation Session with Jennah. When I arrived, Jennah and I had a thorough conversation about my hair. Then, Jennah washed, conditioned, styled, and diffused my curls. Jennah explained EVERYTHING and there was a mirror so I could see what she was doing. The whole time, Jennah was very patient and answered all of my questions. I left with a brand new routine and a follow-up curly cut with Jennah (she booked about a month out). When I returned to the salon, I had what was probably the best haircut experience of my life. I showed Jennah pictures of the style I wanted and she knew just what to do. Jennah cut my hair dry (I got the Rezo cut) and then washed + styled my hair. I had tons of questions and she answered all of them patiently. The best part of the haircut is that she took before and after photos (see attachments)! I left the haircut feeling so confident and grateful for Jennah's help. I cannot recommend AKS enough! This was my second time visiting Anita Kurl and I had high expectations before coming in. My ends were dead and all I wanted was a trim. I emphasized to my stylist, Jorden that I did not want to lose length and that I did not want my layers re-cut. She informed me that she would need to take off additional length to restore the hair health, including on my layers. I left displeased with the appearance of my hair but figured I would trust the process. It has now been 3 months since the cut and my hair does not look good. My layers are not blended, and one side of my hair is significantly longer than the other (not to mention my ends are dead again). I'll attach photos for reference. I have a person I go to in my state (Michigan), it it's been 10 months and I was desperately in need of a cut. I looked on the Deva Curl website and saw that 3 of that area's best Deve Cut stylists were at the same salon. After stalking their Instagram page and the pages of the various stylists, I settled on Diana and was able to get an appointment in 2 days notice. Sweet! My appointment was on a Sunday morning (excellent parking and FREE). I was early so I stopped for a coffee and croissant a block away. When I got to the shop Diana had not arrived, but the receptionists informed me that she called earlier saying she was stuck in traffic. She was about 8 mins late. No biggie. The salon is very clean and plays some pretty good R&B (or maybe it was just that day). They promptly offered me refreshments, there were lots of magazines, and there was a charging station WITH charges already attached (swoon!). Diana asked what my goals were for the cut and we talked for a few minutes. She began to cut and didn't complaining when my hair was a bit tangled (I used a blow dryer to dry my curls that morning). During the wash, she asked about the products I use and shared what she was doing to my hair and putting in my hair. The dryer was my least favorite part (per usual), but it didn't take long. She finished my style my snipping a few stray hairs and adding a finishing spray that smells DIVINE. She was great. I left her a 20% tip. I wish I met her earlier in my time living in Boston. February 19, 2021 is the day Peabo changed my life. My curls were destroyed by a salon I went to as they did some type of process while trying to get me back to blonde that completely killed my curls. I was devastated and thought I had to shave it all off to restart my curly hair process until I came across Peabo. When I walked into his salon for the first time he could see the sadness in my eyes and he could see the damage done to my hair. I remember it as if it was yesterday when he told me "we're gonna get you back". At first I didn't believe him as you can see how damaged my curls were, they weren't even curls anymore, but he told me it would take time. Trust the process as we like to say. After discussing next steps, Peabo couldn't let me walk out his salon with the color I had (I hated the blonde they gave me btw) so he put a toner in my hair so I wouldn't walk out feeling completely sad that day . After that, I kept going back to Peabo every couple of months to touch up on the color and we would keep cutting my hair as it would keep growing out to get rid of all those dead ends/white blonde I had left. Fast forward to today, it has been over a year since I been consistently going to see Peabo and now my curls are floursing like they never were before. Peabo treats your hair as if it was his, he takes care of you, he's honest with you and he'll do whatever he can to get you exactly what you want. I'll never ever ever change Peabo for anyone else because if it wasn't for him my hair wouldn't be looking the way it does now and I know it'll only get better as long as he's my hair stylist. I am a somewhat fussy customer. Ok, very fussy. With curly hair, it's hard to find a place you can go to and always count on a great result. I started with someone in my hometown, and wasn't completely happy though visited them a number of times. More recently I have been going to NYC to the Devachon salons. They are fantastic there. They are the original folks who started the Deva products and techniques. They are the ones that go around and train everyone. Starting last year, I have gone to Anita Kurl. They are every bit as good as Devachon in NYC. My daughter is also quite curly. We used to visit NYC just for a haircut twice a year. We are so glad to find such a quality place. Regarding the specific stylists, I used to go to Taylor before she moved. My daughter went to Trent. Both are just fantastic. Next week I will see Trent for the first time. I have seen the incredible results he has had with others. Last time I was there, he cut the hair of a woman in her mid 20's who hadn't had a cut in a couple of years. She wanted to keep her length and get to to look more styled than the blunt straight bottom cut she had. I was just in awe of what he did. She kept the length, yet she looked totally different. The hair was shaped and moved in a way that made her look so much more polished and mature. My last visit, I got colored and then got a Bayalage treatment. While others liked it, I wasn't a big fan, though it has been growing out nicely. I find that with a great cut you can go much longer between visits. It grows out so nicely. Anyway, you can tell I am a big fan. Not easy to get a review like this from me. Trust me. Again, I would recommend Trent. Pricey and worth it. read more

I came here for my first Deva Cut with Taylor in December. Salon: The salon is very convenient if you plan to drive it take public transit. I came on a Sunday so the parking was free without a time limit. On other days you can pay meter parking. When I first entered I was greeted by the front desk person and checked in. I was offered water which was nice. The salon is very well decorated and clean. My hair: I have 4b texture hair and have never had anyone with a different hair type do my hair. At first I was skeptical with Taylor but knowing she went through extra training through DevaCurl for my hair texture gave me reassurance. Taylor did a wonderful job on my cut and also explaining how to apply the products at home so I can achieve the look on my own. Overall: I was highly impressed and happy with the services I received. This place is fantastic, I was in Boston for the summer and in desperate need for a haircut. I have had Deva cuts before in my hometown (with a certified level 1 specialist) and while I thought my stylist was good (at least better than stylists that work only on straight hair) Diana completely blew me away. My hair is wavy with a few tighter curls here and there, however my lower layers are almost straight. My hair was getting a bit long and unmanageable, I also have lost of volume so no matter how much I tried to get it under control there was some section or the other that was frizzy. My stylist would usually just remove a bit of volume from the top to give it a bit of shape, but due to my bottom layers being straightish I would end up with some weird looking straight sections coming out here and there which I would notice within a few washes after my cut and assumed was inevitable. When I sat down at Diana's chair within a few seconds she mentioned the different hair texture of my lower layers (something I usually have to point out), suggested using some rezo cut techniques to give me better shape and volume and removed A LOT of hair (I wanted to go from mid-back length back to shoulder length). I was a bit nervous when I stood up and saw all that hair gone, but I decided to take a leap of faith. She shampooed, conditioner, styled and then out me on one of these blow drying machines for a while. I really appreciated that she showed me everything she was applying, the quantities as well as why would she recommend it (ouidad weather control for Boston's humidity). I left with some soft well defined waves. I was pretty happy overall but I wanted to wait for a couple months to make sure that that feeling lasted after washing and styling my hair on my own. Boy it did!! After a few hiccups here and there with me trying to figure out the new length, my hair seems to be pretty happy with this change overall, more locks have a tighter curl and even my straightish later has some waves going on down there! I can say that I am in love with this place and is probably one of the things I will miss the most from Boston (I am secretly looking for an excuse to visit Boston again just to come back to this salon!). read more

I wouldn't send my worst enemy to this salon. I saw Bebo (absolutely no idea how to spell his name) last week. He must have been new because he was available at the last minute and he wasn't listed on their website when I made an appointment for the next available stylist. When I sat down in his chair I told him that I wanted a little trim and to keep as much length as possible. I made this VERY clear, at least I thought I did. He then proceeded to tell me that what I wanted was boring, great way to start an appointment by insulting your client, and said he thought I should get BANGS. I had to tell him no at least four times before he finally let it go. He also told me that I "look like I drink" and I should have a "sexy haircut". At this point I should have just gotten up and left the salon, but I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt that he could give me the haircut I asked for. He started cutting the back of my hair and I could tell immediately that he was cutting way too much off. As we was about 2/3 of the way through my head I told him it was way too short and that I had said I wanted just a trim. He proceeded to tell me that I was wrong and it wasn't short; he made me look at all my hair in the floor and tried to tell me that it "wasn't even a lot of hair". I told him that to me, it was a lot of hair and I wasn't happy. At this point he got even more defensive and said that he had "executed exactly what we talked about". He ended up cutting 6" off of my hair that I had spent the last three years growing out and I left with a chunky and lopsided bob/quasi-shag haircut that I was embarrassed to be seen in public with. Aside from the TERRIBLE haircut, he couldn't style my hair within an inch of his life, it was a frizzy disaster when I left the salon after he had supposedly washed and styled it. The only nice thing I can say about this salon is that Kandace was very kind and noticed how unhappy I was and did everything she could to remedy the situation, but Bebo had already destroyed my hair so it was too late. read more

Don't visit this establishment. Read all the negative comments, and how the owner responds, never taking accountability for anything. The client is always wrong. That's not way to run a business. Your 24 hour cancellation policy is not realistic and unfair to the customer. You need to look at your competition and evaluate your policies. If you have long hair, this is not the salon for you. The hair dresser basically told me my "hair is too long" and that I needed to "cut and shape it" and because it was so long, it wouldn't curl. After the so called "Curly Hair Transformation" was completed, my hair looked the same. Months prior, I spoke to someone and told them over the phone that my hair was long and asked what to do, but was told because I was new to the curly hair community, to come in for the transformation service first, which just let my hair feel stiff and stringy. And I KNOW my hair is long, I didn't need an hour long appointment and $50 for someone to tell me that. I would rather they just say "We can't help you." so that none of us had to waste that hour, the effort, or money. Although I was shown good technique and good application, they didn't even bother drying my hair and told me to just let it air dry. Then I was encouraged to book a hair cut appointment even though this last one was a disappointment. I'm sure they might be able to help someone else with short hair, but if you have long hair, don't come here. You need to clarify with them if they can even help you at all because it's very possible that they can't/won't. Along with all that, they... -a week before, changed my appointment to 15 minutes later than scheduled -when I arrived, started my appointment another 15 minutes late -didn't even technically finish because it was getting too late (as in not even drying my hair all the way) -didn't have any change so I gave more than I wanted to -tried to charge me double because they'd recently changed their prices, which hopefully was an honest mistake, but nonetheless not a good look And it ultimately didn't do anything, my hair was the same. If they had just been honest in the beginning and told me my hair was too long to curl before they started the appointment and told me that I NEED a cut first, I would've been dissapointed, but atleast I would have gotten a cut elsewhere before I came in for this service, but too late now. It just feels like I didn't have enough information before coming here, and if I did, it's possible it could've gone better, but I was just really dissapointed. Let me begin this review by saying, I waited impatiently for over a month for this appointment with Kandace. The morning of, I followed all the rules before my first Deva Cut. I arrived on time and waited approximately 30 minutes before getting in the chair. I told Kandace my bare minimum length which was a little past my shoulders - curly haired girls will understand this. At shorter lengths, there is no telling how my curls will behave. Long story short, a 2-hour appointment interwoven with several other of her clients in between, I'm left with hair up past my shoulders and layers to my chin - my curls (eek!). Now let me say for this final dramatic part that I know my hair will grow back...eventually. I called my mom crying immediately after leaving. My hair barely goes back into a ponytail and as a runner this will be a challenge for the next month or so. I will never go back again and advise anyone reading this to look through all the reviews carefully - I wish I had! read more

Still recovering from my last haircut that I received here months ago- extremely choppy, layers look like shelves, half of my hair was longer on one side. Had to get it fixed elsewhere for half the price. Perhaps it's the dry cut but $160 is a lot to pay for subpar haircut. read more

A truly incredible salon if you have curly hair. I've seen Peabo for a few haircuts and I am always so happy with the results. He also taught me how to style my hair to bring out the natural pattern (loose/wavy curls). Coming here is such a fun experience because everyone there is so knowledgable about curly hair, and all the clients end up looking amazing! I used to think my hair was mostly straight and frizzy, but recently I started to work on caring for it correctly. My results improved so much after getting Peabo's guidance (SO much better than the random advice I found on Reddit!). I can't recommend this salon enough. I am obsessed with Kandace! I myself is a hairstylist at another salon in Boston but I like going to see her and feeling like a client! She is so sweet, kind and takes the time to really cut my hair like I want. I leave the salon feeling like a new women every time and I get so many compliments from my clients and friends on how well my curly haircut grows out. I did a considerable amount of research before choosing Anita Kurl. I don't trust people with my hair but I was desperate for a professional cut after 3 years of home trimming here and there. The majority of my hair is 3b. It's extremely thick, has many frizzy pockets and non-frizzy pockets, thicker parts and less thicker parts, looser curls and tighter curls. I had a 615 appointment on a weekday night. I left the salon shortly after 9 PM. My stylist was triple booked - working on my hair and two other clients' hair during that 3-hour time frame. My stylist barely cut my hair before sending me to the sink. Being that I know the Deva method, I should have known that that was a bad sign. The majority of the cut should be done before heading to the sink, while my hair is dry and then small touchups are to be done after getting washed and diffused. My curls looked great after being diffused because of all the product, time spent at the sink and diffuser. The cutting she had done before the sink was literally a blunt cut - no shape at all, so a lot of work was left to be done. However as soon as my stylist started touching my hair to start cutting again (around 8:45pm) it started frizzing like crazy. I questioned what to do. Continue to let her cut it (which would mean leaving with a frizz ball, unable to see the true cut) or let her know that her window of opportunity with my hair had passed and I might as well leave and get home at a reasonable hour? I decided to do the latter, so part of my hair was a frizzy mess and the other half had no shape but at least the curls looked decent. My stylist was apologetic and asked me to call her after I had styled it on my own to let her know what else needed to be done. I wasn't able to get in again until the following week at no charge, thankfully. This time she listened more intently to what I wanted my hair to look like and did more shaping prior to heading to the sink. However even after getting my hair washed and diffused more work still had to be done which was very annoying. The shape was awful (triangular, which is a curlyhaired person's worst nightmare)! He got to the point where I had to tell her exactly where to cut and how much to cut off an order for it to look good. With all these cutting episodes, my hair ended up shorter than I originally hoped. I don't plan to go back. read more
